This is an iconic bar in Williamsburg, simply because it's outlasted so many other places & is one of the oldest in the 'hood. I like it because it's close to my apartment and it's got a friendly, neighborhood feel & the drinks are cheap. My friends like it because it screens lots of soccer matches. Smokers like it because the patio is inviting year round - there are benches and a lovely fire out there. Drinkers like it because there is a wide selection of beers on draft. Avoid the mulled wine, it's a bit bitter. Otherwise, a lovely bar full of friendly people - warm and inviting in the winter, airy and pleasant in the summer - what's not to love? read more

But sometimes you're playing chess with a real douchebag that you and your friends each thinks is a friend of someone else. So none of you talk shit to him but later realize no one knew or liked him. I must say, when I visited Iona, I didn't even notice the fact that it is an Irish bar, so reading the other reviews was certainly a surprise. But what I did notice was the fun atmosphere at Iona. While the inside part of the bar is a bit small, the garden/patio in back is enormous, and seems to be filled with great people! There is plenty of seating, and is very conducive to big groups. And even if I wasn't with a group of friends, I would more than happy to go here an people watch. Also, the ping pong table really makes this place. I'll take ping pong over darts or pool, any day. All in all, this is a really fun bar, with reasonably priced drinks and a great atmosphere. Definitely check it out. read more

There are a few places in my Sunday Funday rotation in Willamsburg. The beer list is complete and has something for everyone and their bloody mary's are quite nice. The backyard has plenty of great seating options and different levels. Awesome neighborhood bar, but alot of what makes it is the backyard. Every time I go I feel like I'm at a friend's place (a friend who invites random acquaintances). Generally speaking, the clientele is friendly and a welcome change from many NYC bars where god forbid you strike up a conversation with someone outside your crew. I've had hour long conversations with total strangers here, getting very drunk at the same time. The table tennis is a great touch, although the table can get tough to get. During colder weather, the place gets cramped but I love the window nooks. Sports on the projector is a nice plus too! read more

my friend had a birthday get together there last month and while the atmosphere was good as far as bars go, it wasn't great for a packed house on a wednesday night. the long, fairly narrow layout for the place makes it difficult trying to navigate through. the seating area in the back is cramped right next to the bathrooms-which sucks!-and 1 of the 3 tables wasn't allowed to be used because of the dj area. i am however looking to go back in the warmer weather because of the large outdoor area out back...that's the selling point for me when it comes to drinking spots in brooklyn! read more

What a surprise. This hole-in-the-wall-esque place was the perfect spot to stop into for a drink and some conversation. The first impression is deceiving. You walk into a tight, very European feeling space and ordered up from the delicious array of beers on tap. Soon we found out about their twice the size of the inside backyard/biergarten and proceeded out back for conversation, drinking and fresh air. Okay, it was really about the space and lack of people out back on a chilly winter evening, but truly a lovely place to wile away an hour. Impressive selection of beers and whiskey. Love the ambiance, we sat at an old sewing machine converted to a table. Cool background beats -- mostly 80s stuff and the Beatles. Towards the later end of the night a DJ showed up and told me about Pet Shop Boy's new album Elysium. Music was not obnoxiously loud and not super crowded, so you can actually have a civilized conversation.
