I came to Ironside specifically for the fish and chips, which is still advertised online but is no longer on the menu. I was also surprised to learn that the restaurant is under new management and with a new cook that doesn't "believe in frying fish" per the waiter. Finding the restaurant was another challenge. The facility is now named something else in large lettering, while "Ironside" is only displayed in very small writing on the side of the building, making it surprisingly difficult to locate. The wait to be seated was also frustrating. I was told it would be around 30-45 minutes, but the actual wait was considerably longer. The front desk staff was not very attentive. When I received a call that my table was finally ready, I went to the front desk, but the staff member continued working on her iPad without acknowledging me. She eventually walked to the back and continued watching me from afar without assisting me. Multiple other people came to the front desk and didn't bat an eye.. After all that frustration, I ended up having to flag down a waiter for help. Started off with water which tasted so disgusting. It was not regular water nor sparkling. Not sure what was brought out, but I've never tasted water like that in my life. After replacing the water, it tasted normal. We ordered the clam chowder and lobster roll. Both were good, but neither was particularly memorable. I've had better lobster rolls, and Cousins Maine Lobster is significantly better in my opinion. Overall, for a restaurant that presents itself as an upscale, busy dining destination, I expected more. By the time we were finally seated, I was so tired from the long wait and frustrating experience that I had lost much of my appetite. What an amazing gem! We got off the plane and tried to make it to another spot for lunch but the wait was over an hour. In our search for an alternative nearby, we happened upon Ironside which was opening in just another 10 minutes and let me tell you, it was worth the wait. The atmosphere is amazing, we loved the decor, and we were lucky to show up early because the entire restaurant filled up within the hour. We started with a dozen of the raw oysters, they were fresh, juicy, and incredibly flavorful. We especially loved the minionette sauce and the included horseradish. Next up was the bread, the butter it comes with is salted and tastes amazing paired up with the exquisitely light and fluffy bread. By this time, our drinks came up and the Mai Tai was the winner of the day. The aperol spritz and Ghostwriter were also good, but the Mai Tai was possibly the best that I've ever had. Next up, we had the Oysters Rockefeller, which had a combination of two varieties, one with caramelized onions and the other with a crispy chili drizzle. Both were delicious, but I preferred the creamy freshness of the raw oysters. Then the main characters showed up, the lobster rolls, clam chowder, and the amazing local catch of sea bass. The winner for this round was the 'brought in that morning' sea bass, but the lobster rolls took a very close second place. Everything was cooked to perfection and incredibly flavorful. The lobster rolls were a little unorthodox, being more of a lobster open face sandwich, but everything was so good, we are looking forward to coming back again. If you're in the area and are a fan of excellent sea food, Ironside deserves to have a place near the top of your short list. The service was great, the atmosphere is worthy of sharing on social media, and the food approaches that of Michelin recognized establishments. The clam chowder came out first and it was delicious, hot and had plenty of clams and the cheddar biscuit was yummy too. The oysters were pink moon and sweet petites and the sweet petites weren't sweet but the pink moons were yummy. The octopus was okay but I also am not a big octopus person. I really liked enjoyed the lobster roll with the malt fries. Plenty of lobster and so yummy on the butter bread. The peach and burrata salad was also so yummy, refreshing and balanced. I've grown to learn that pretty much anything put on by consortium holdings is going to be absolutely stunning inside, and this spot did not disappoint. Loved the nautical decor and fun menu. I have a $150 credit on one of my cards, and Ironside in San Diego's Little Italy is on the list. I'm very glad we had dinner here. We started w/ the octopus and bread. The octopus was tender, and the chorizo base was super flavorful. The chorizo went very well with the bread. Secondarily, the caviar and fries arrived. The caviar went well with the kouign amman that was dense. I have only had caviar w/ blini, so the kouign amman was a nice change of pace. Thirdly, the fries were plentiful and GBD. Unfortunately, her sea bass (not pictured), took a long time to arrive. Our waiter kept us apprised of the delay, but the kitchen did a poor job of spacing the dishes. The sea bass should have arrived with the caviar, bc the caviar doesn't need cooking. Nonetheless, the sea bass was overcooked. She would not order it again. To end the meal, the soft serve ice cream was light and simple. It was a nice way to end a salty & savory meal. Alex was an excellent waiter. He was very attentive, knowledgable about the menu, and a nice guy. The restaurant advises clients there is a 4% charge for the staff. I gave Alex 20% on top of the 4% bc he was so good. Regarding the ambiance, its open air and lively. There are tables outside on sidewalk to absorb all the energy India St in Little Italy has to offer. This place is hopping! Service was friendly and pretty fast for how busy they were (on a Monday night)! Came with a group of 7 and only waited a few minutes for a table. We got lucky because a big booth was finishing up when I put my name down for the waitlist. We had the seafood tower (biggest) to share. I got the slab louie. Others got the clam chowder, lobster roll, oyster mushrooms. The oysters were SO good here. Can't go wrong with whichever kind you get. One I had was really fatty but salty and good. Unfortunately I don't remember which one it was. Next time I'll have to pay more attention. Also from the seafood tower, the shrimp was good, the lobster was a nice amount to share. My favorite other than the oysters was the sea bass dip thing. The ceviche was fine, nothing too special. The smoked fish dip was my least favorite because it just reminded me of tuna salad but fancy. I didn't try the tuna crudo because there were only 3 pieces so I let my friends eat it. The slab louie was good. The crab was fresh and the dressing was good. I liked that it had avocado and asparagus in it too. The mushrooms were good. I didn't try the clam chowder. I had a bite of the lobster from the lobster roll and MAN. It was SO rich and buttery and the bread looked perfectly toasty and buttery. The lobster roll was $38 (I think) but it was not a tiny lobster roll like I'm used to seeing in SF. It was a good size with a lot of lobster. Definitely worth the price here. I will say that it had so much butter, I probably would only be able to eat half. If you come here with only one other person, I'd recommend getting some oysters, maybe another appetizer, and split the lobster roll. The decor inside is so cool. I didn't want to do it. I told myself to get the salad with a fresh fish filet like I had (strongly) done in the past. But the guests I invited to lunch asked me "what was good?" After explaining how butter poached lobster rolls are far superior to the cape cod style mayo version, and how the house baked brioche bun is better than any lobster roll bun I had ever had and the hand cut fries with aioli are addictive - I caved and ordered one. Heard about this place for so long and finally got to try it when I went as part of a bachelorette. The space is actually pretty large inside. We got seated right around our reservation time. For food we got the "bigger" platter which comes with a bunch of seafood (oysters, shrimp, chopped tuna, rockfish ceviche, smoked swordfish dip and crudo) and accompaniments including dips, crackers, etc. Also ordered the charred octopus, fried rice and fries. All the seafood tasted really fresh and the platter was a great variety to try a bunch of things. My favorite was the the ceviche and the swordfish dip. Nothing was overly salty either. Fried rice tasted really decadent but it was yummy. Fries were thinner cut and crispy. The only slight letdown was the octopus. Kind of chewy and a small size for the price. The portion size and quality also do not suffice the price, I would not order again. -Hiramasa collar $19, the grilled yellowtail collar was juicy, tender and flavorful. It tasted smokey and bright(with squeeze of lemon), each bite was addicting. -Lobster roll $38, the bread was insanely buttery in the best way and they did not skimp on the lobster filling at all. Loved the hint of vinegar coming through the fries, crispy, no notes. I would recommend this dish the most. Ambiance 5/5 -Lively mixed dining and bar environment, medium level of music, interior design is tastefully done like most other consortium holdings restaurants. Our server was attentive, friendly, and happy to answer all of our questions, which made the experience even better. My only complaints were that the music was a bit too loud and the lighting was very dim. We ended up asking if the music could be turned down because it was difficult to have a conversation, and the low lighting made it a little hard to read the menu. One of the coolest places to grab some seafood, Ironside goes all out on the nautical theme with their interior and design. The New England Clam Chowder was creamy and the perfect start to the meal. The biscuit was good too, however it would have been better had it been served hot. The oysters rockefeller were also creamy, savory, and very tasty. It's a little weird how they serve it on a tray built for 6 but they only give 4. The Smoked Cod Toast I'd have to say was the most disappointing dish of the meal. It's basically an eggs benedict with fish on top. However I didn't get any smoky/fish taste and so the hollaindaise sauce overpowered the whole dish. The Rockfish Ceviche was very fresh and light. It goes very well with the basic saltine crackers. But the best dish of the night was definitely the Charred Octopus. So much flavor from the sauce and the olive tapenade, this is a must get. Ironside continues to be a family favorite of ours - it offers a very cool, trendy deep sea aesthetic with a friendly and welcoming staff from the hostess stand, bartenders, and waiters. We tend to be quite regular here - whenever we find ourselves downtown or in the Little Italy area. We often take the trolley, but every so often we'll drive. Be prepared for this area to be busy, so parking can be tricky to find unless you opt for paid parking nearby. Each time, we're seated without a reservation (and sometimes as a family of 4) and it's been fun to bounce around their dining rooms as each spot has its own experience. This time, we snagged their bench seats right at the front. It's an open air concept, which I love, because I can enjoy the ambiance of the restaurant, yet outside a bit. My husband and I enjoy their menu and appreciate how it changes up regularly. Every visit necessitates oysters on the half shell, a ceviche, and a shared main. Great place for my Birthday Dinner! Our group of 5 had reservations to celebrate my 30th birthday. I had been looking for a resturant that looked like it offered good quality sea food and had a nice night out vibe. The new remodel of this place gave us just that and the food was amazing! We ordered a little bit of everything. Oysters, octopus, mussels, tuna toast & drinks. Wow, the flavors that made up each dish really made us want to keep eating and sharing everything. My favorite items were the octopus and mussels. The octupus was tender and not chewy ! And the mussles came in a chunky sauce that was amazing. One piece of bread was not enough to really enjoy the plate. The drinks were good and complimented our food well. My menu was also personalized and they gave our table a personalized dessert in celebration of my birthday. We enjoyed our experience so much. The only thing that made this review a 4 star was the service. It was a very busy evening and we would loose our waitress for long periods. With that being said. When she would return, she was always very polite and attentive to anything we needed. read more

We've been to Ironside Fish and Oyster before and service is always great. Food choices change sometime, always for the better. This time we arrived late to the HH with Oysters for $1 each and they were delicious, also the steamed shrimp had a nice flavor and so easy to peel. Well, I highly recommend Ironside for anytime but do make a reservation best with Open Table or Yelp. Weekends are through to get a table, book 2-3 weeks early. read more

If you're in Little Italy in San Diego and are not looking for something Italian but rather some delicious seafood, then Ironside is the place! Especially during their $1.00 oyster special price times. It was a bit busy but what restaurant with $1.00 priced oysters won't be? Their oysters are well worth the wait and the clam chowder fries are a must. So is the Tiny Tini at only $8.00 during happy hour. You'd think the word tiny in the name would mean just a sample size but it was generous tiny and well made. Sidewalk seating was very comfortable in the near perfect San Diego weather in late June and despite the wait for our order it was lovely being outdoors enjoying the people watching. The restrooms are a bit too dark for my liking, but they were clean and well stocked. read more
