I was a little nervous since it was my first time but they made me feel comfortable and provided the right words of encouragement when I needed it. We did the early morning ride which was perfect, the trail has areas of shade and the valley provides views of the other islands. I would recommend this trial to everyone. What stood out to Mr. Man and I was how the staff really care about the horses and they enjoy what they do. The guides all have a passion and love the horses. Will definitely be back the next time we visit the island. Besides, I got to ride Bruno Mars while I was in Maui. That wouldn't be possible anywhere else! :) read more

So a couple hours ago this "special event location" cancelled my ride. Said not enough people signed up. Oh, to make me feel better they offered their sunset ride as an alternative...except they wanted me to pay the additional cost!!! Won't say bait and switch but??? Over the last few years they have cancelled rides on me for various reasons. All to their benefit. They all were cancelled within a couple hours of the ride, changing my valuable Hawaii vacation time. IF I had cancelled in that time they keep my money. Now they did refund, but what gives them the right in less than 24 hours...I should have been given the up-rated trip at the same price... Very poorly run business. There are other ride sites. We booked a morning horseback ride for myself and my 9 year old son. We are both novices and found this experience to be wonderful! I loved that they name the horses after famous people (I got to ride David Beckham haha!) and the horses are super mellow. I loved our guide Gina's narrative that she shared not only about the horses but about the trail we rode through. The history and how the landscape has changed was fascinating. I am not a rider. Had only been on a horse once before. Went with my three kids, ages 9-10-12. The ride was fun until my horse had a little tiff with the guide's horse and ended up on the edge of small cliff overlooking green shrubs making it's depth unclear and formidable. Scared the heck out me and my kids. I had to ease the horse back on the trail. I would definitely not put my kids on a horse again. I agree with the other reviewers about the ladies running the ranch. They're all very nice. The guide, Alexis, was very nice and knowledgeable. The scenery was great. Our ride was suppose to be 90 minutes, but it was more like 60, which was fine with me. After my little mishap, I couldn't get off that horse fast enough. read more

In an attempt to convince my boyfriend that parasailing would be the most attractive activity option, I suggested horse back riding, thinking that he would rather be 1200 feet in the air at the end of a cable attached to a boat rather than on the back of a large animal. I was wrong. So much for reverse psychology. Not knowing the area, I trusted the concierge desk at my resort to make the arrangements for this outing and we headed to Ironwood Ranch. The setting is really beautiful and serene...almost like something out of the beginning of a horror movie. We arrived on time (allow about 45 minutes before your ride to allow for paper work and instructions) and followed the signs to the office. There we were greeted by the boss lady (not sure of her name) and she was super friendly and professional. She answered all of our questions and thensome! We signed all appropriate paper work, read an instruction manual, were given helmets (they were optional, and dorky, I know, but better safe than sorry).and taken to our horses. [At Ironwood, they will match you with a horse that matches your abilities, so be honest about your horse experience.] After we mounted our horses, we met our guide (Angel) and away we went! Angel was also very knowledgeable not only about horses, but also about the local landscape, the plants, trees and the history of the area we were riding in. Our ride took us through a little valley, up and down hills, past pineapple fields, and gave us some really breathtaking views. It was very relaxing!! This was a great experience, I would recommend Ironwood Ranch to anyone on Maui who is looking for somewhere to ride horses. A couple of tips: Bring a jacket, as it gets cold. And wear insect repellent, lest you get eaten alive by the skeeters like we did. read more

We took our 7- and 9-year-olds here for the West Maui ride. The trail ride was wonderful and everyone had a great time (the 7-year-old said "I loved it!". The horses were gentle and well-behaved, the guides were helpful, and everything was well organized. The kids also enjoyed the chickens, cats, and the orchard (where we were able to collect two pomelos). The location was beautiful and a short drive from Kaanapali. Highly recommend the sunset tour. It's about two hours, led by the most knowledgeable and friendly guide through the jungle, pineapple farm, rolling hills, and a former Hawaiian village. The guide knows every plant on the way, talks about Hawaiian traditions, and gives some great tips about using plants to heal sunburn. And the views from the hills are to remember, especially when the sun is setting! The 16 horses on the farm are so beautiful and are so very well cared for. The saddles are so comfortable that after an almost 2 hour ride, I got off the horse as if from an armchair. My horse JC was superb at taking directions. Would go again in a heartbeat! read more

Decided to try horseback riding for my first time while on Maui. Never ridden a horse before. When we arrived, the ranch is up a dirt road. Very easy to find. Signs show direction to go. Parking is easy. Dirt parking lot. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Emma was especially great. Very helpful and easy to talk to. Emma showed us around and explained how to ride. As we got going, she gave us a tour and kept looking back to make sure we were ok while riding. As a first time rider, I felt uneasy but she kept helping me understand the function of everything. My husband and I went on the West Maui Journey with Gina as our guide. We were set up with two beautiful and very well trained horses, "Jean Claude Van Damme" and "Will Smith". 'Will' was so well trained that I barely needed to steer him. We are both beginners so it was important to us to have well trained horses! We loved that all the horses were named after celebrities. We were also excited to learn that actual celebrities (like Leonardo DiCaprio and Garth Brooks!) have also taken the tour at Ironwood. The ride was nice and smooth and the views were gorgeous! We went through wild pineapple fields, went past coffee plants, and saw a sweeping view of west Maui and the neighboring islands in the distance. So! Good! This was a really great experience. It was my first time riding a horse, but the staff walked me through everything. My wife and I took an early-morning ride - if not for one other customer, it would've been a private ride. It's a bit tricky to find this place. You turn onto an unmarked road off Highway 30 in Napili, then follow a dirt road past a private school for about two miles up the side of the mountain. The ranch is pretty far up the mountain, so once you're out on the trail, you get beautiful vistas of the channel and Lanai. We had two tour guides on our trip, who pointed out interesting things along the way, including a tiny pineapple growing by itself in the forest, what was supposed to be a storage cave used by ancient Hawaiians (I was a bit skeptical but I guess it could be true) and several sugar cane patches. As we rode through the sugar patches, my horse would take enormous bites of sugar cane plant. We were supposed to pull on the reins to prevent the horses from doing this, but, alas, the horses were unable to resist the lure of pure sugar. I had a good time chatting with one of the tour guides, who said he can trace his family back through 16 generations on the island. On top of all that, it's right near Kaanapali and Napili, so it's a super-short drive if you're staying in either of those resorts. I think it was about $90 for a one-hour ride, which isn't too bad. read more

For once, I can give a 5-star to an outdoor, touristy activity; and not just because I'm an urban yuppie who doesn't see the rural, farm life but when you're wishing that this ride doesn't end, then that's when you know you're having a good time. From the get go, tour guide Angel made this easy; even provided some reading materials on how to control the horse. Funny how they name the horses after actors ie. Janet Jackson, Will Smith...mine was Slash, who is a bit rougher and high energy, constant pulling to tell him to slow down lol. Patient, walking tempo pace. riding a lot easier than thought, especially the downhill. The views from the central, inner part of Maui: unbelievable and breath taking. For just $85, minus 10% off, this is a steal. Well over an hour. It's true, you've got to wear long pants, as some paths were pretty tight, and lots of trees, branches, etc. everywhere. In hindsight, even a long-sleeve would've been better, give less skin to those bugs. Pop/water provided. Just make sure you use the washroom before making the 5 min drive up the hill, unless those portables suit you ;) read more

Had the wonderful experience of riding at Ironwood this past week. Went with a girlfriend who is an experienced rider and we had an amazing time! The property is stunning, the horses are breath taking, and the people are wonderful. The main ranch staffer was super friendly and even cracked jokes about the horses names. You could tell she wanted to put everyone at ease. She in addition to working the ranch, runs the Hawaiian island pit bull rescue. She has over 100 pit bulls at her home. Talk about being the modern day St. Francis of Assisi for pit bulls! Anyhow I got David Beckham and loved him instantly! He was so stunning and gentle. Our fabulous guide Angel, instructed me to keep my reins low because that's how he liked it. I followed and we got along famously! He did like to stop and nibble as we walked. Wasn't a strenuous ride, just a lot of up and down trail. Don't forget the bug spray!! Mosquitoes deep into the forest. The views were stunning and I really enjoyed learning about the plants and history from Angel. You can really feel her connection to the horses in the way she talks to each of them. Shania was getting antsy with the helicopter flying above, but Angel's soothing voice calmed her down. Great scenery and even got to pick some fresh fruit once we got back! read more

We payed for the 1.5 HR ride which ended up being closer to 1 HR. I was happy we even got to ride though. My wife and I had a great time. We did the 90 minute morning ride. The staff were friendly and got us through the paperwork and the "need to knows". Dani, our guide, was great. She gave out information about the island I was not aware of, had never heard on any other island tours we'd been on (this was our 4th trip to Maui). She was great at giving instruction along the way when it was needed and was in control of the situation the whole time. As a first time rider, it was very comforting. This will be a for sure stop each future trip to the island. It is close enough to the main road that you can do the morning ride, then make your way to the beach and relax. A beautiful ranch settled in the middle of valleys, pineapple plantations and ancient Hawaiian villages. It seems that the whole ranch is run by ladies, which is friggin awesome! All the ladies were really nice and only eased our anxiety about the huge 1,200 pound things we were sitting under. My mom, sister and I decided to sign up for the sunset horseback riding tour. The ride in total was two hours. The horses are laid back, just like the crew. The view of the sunset was simply breath taking. I would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in a nice laid back activity that's comfortable sitting on a horse for more than an hour and a half. read more

We had such a beautiful ride on well-loved, big horses. The trail was easy, calm and mostly cane grass and thick forest that occasionally opened up to views of neighboring islands. We were notified that our ride would be cut short due to slippery terrain however we were given a fair partial refund without even asking. The staff was lovely. I've ridden at three ranches in Maui. This early am ride was the shadiest and best beginner trail ride. As an experience trail rider on the mainland, I would recommend this ranch to a family based on my family's experience. Dani & Emma are awesome- so helpful & personable, horses are incredible- so much personality (you can tell these horses are loved and cared for, not taken advantage of or abused at all!), the trail ride itself was beautiful. My husband and I loved our horseback riding tour! Dani and Tara were wonderful. Dani taught us about the foliage as we were riding through the beautiful Maui hills. We caught some great views of the ocean along the way. Tara let us feed and pet the horses in the stable at the end. The horses were gorgeous and loving. Totally Awesome!!!! My husband & I went for a 90 min ride the other day. Angel was our guide & she was Fabulous. The "surfer girl" from Santa Cruz checked us in, and she was very friendly & helpful; as well as all the staff that we talked with. We were set to arrive at 10:30 and ride at 11:30 upon arriving at 10:33 we weren't greeted and we were rushed to do paperwork. We had a new rider and practically no direction was given to her until the guides had to help correct her throughout. The 2 guides riding mark wahlberg and Robert downey were prefect, informative, fun, and welcoming so that's the only reason I'm giving 3 stars. Gina however, yes I asked for her name specifically to write this. For a fun amazing experience she sure did have a negative and unwelcoming attitude. Had this not been the main adventure of my birthday trip that I was looking forward to I would have left on principle of her attitude. Guides thank you so so much.
