We had the best (5 star) experience with Ocean Project Maui! We had been referred to Jen by a friend and boy did it not disappoint. As a family of four with small kiddos (age 7 and 4), we wanted to take the kids out to snorkel but we really wanted to see some sea creatures and we a little nervous about going out on our own with the kids. The fact that we could walk into the bay without going on a boat was huge for all of us, 3 of us get motion sickness! Jen and Dave taught all of us so much about the ocean, Maui, and wildlife which made the snorkeling feel so much more meaningful. Upon walking into the bay, we saw a turtle swim by. HIGHLIGHT OF OUR ENTIRE VACATION! Jen and Dave were so helpful with helping the kiddos enjoy themselves and feel safe in the ocean - which made the experience so much more enjoyable for us as parents. In addition to their expertise teaching us about what we were seeing in the ocean, Jen and Dave also took the most beautiful photographs of everything we saw and us in the ocean. To have these happy memories captured, means everything! Also they provided all the gear (including wetsuits!) which was super helpful to not have to worry about anything but towels, sunscreen, water, and swimsuits! We booked with Maui Ocean Project about a month before our trip to Maui. I emailed the owner, and she responded quickly with several date and time options that fit perfectly into our schedule. She was extremely thorough about safety (huge priority for us. We have two kids, 10 yo and 7 yo) and took detailed measurements to ensure we had the right wetsuits, snorkels, and fins. Our experience was amazing. She educated us about the reef's habitats and the aquatic life we were likely to see. We even got to see an octopus and several sea turtles! We chose Maui Ocean Project based on recommendations of friends of ours and have to say they were right! Our 2 kids, age 6 and 9, had never snorkeled before and we wanted them to have a safe and enjoyable first experience. I'm happy to say Mel and Jen provided just that. Even though it was raining, they thoughtfully had umbrellas to cover us while Jen shared with us about the marine life that we would see in the ocean. They provided us with wetsuits, snorkels and masks and fins and boogie boards to hang onto while snorkeling. The kids were a little nervous about swimming in the ocean, but Jen and Mel were great with them. It was so great to have someone point out exactly what we were seeing. They knew the bay so well they even had names for the turtles we saw! When the kids got cold and tired, Jen thoughtfully took them back to the beach to get dry while Mel stayed out with my husband and I to snorkel some more. And as an added bonus they took photos while we were on shore and snorkeling. We're so excited to see the photos. We're really glad we picked Maui Ocean Project for our snorkeling trip in Maui. I don't even know where to begin, and I don't think there are enough words to describe how amazing our experience was. It was easy to book and communicate with Jen prior to our session. The list of questions in the email makes the process more efficient once you arrive. My husband, our two kids (7 and 4), and I are not deep-water people. My husband honestly can't swim (the wetsuit keeps you buoyant). My husband was nervous for himself but also for our kids just knowing how much time we haven't spent in the ocean before. Upon meeting Jen, Deb, and Mel, none of us had any fears. Everyone felt immediately comfortable with them, they were SO kind to our kids and that's a big thing for us. We got suited up and sat under a tree for a while as Jen taught us about things we were going to see underwater. Once we were ready to go, they had tons of options to make sure our kids felt even more comfortable in the ocean (different boards and goggle options). Our daughter (7) had some anxiety midway through and Jen was incredibly supportive and encouraging - truly an angel. About 60% of the way through, both kids had to go to the bathroom and demanded a place other than the ocean... Jen and Deb took them back to shore, helped them with the bathroom, then played in the water with them while Mel stayed my husband and I so we could see more. We almost forgot we had kids with us because we trusted them so much! Mel taught us both how to dive, was so knowledgeable, and we had an amazing time! We saw loads of different fish, creatures, and even a turtle! Paparazzi Mel was the best photographer and I can't wait to see the pictures we get at the end. After we left, our daughter said she wants to see them again so she can help teach other people about snorkeling. The following day, both kids turned into immediate ocean lovers thanks to these three ladies. I don't know what they did, but they refuse to get out of the ocean now and we LOVE it! I was actually pretty nervous about snorkeling before going out with Jen, but she made it such an amazing experience that I can't wait to go out again! She fitted us with a wet suit, fins and a mask before sitting us down to give us a bit of an overview of the reefs, the wildlife we might see and some of their behaviors. She then took us out into the water where she had a boogie board for us to use to stay floating and she swam along side us guiding us and taking pictures while describing what we were seeing. We saw two turtles and hundreds of fish, it was absolutely amazing!! She made it such a lovely experience, I would highly recommend everyone go out with her! Just book it! You won't regret the decision. We booked this experience because we were traveling with my 3 kids (13,11,8) and I was worried I wouldn't enjoy my experience with a more traditional snorkel tour because I'd be worried about staying with the kids in a group and my daughter wasn't a fan the last time we took her out. I liked the idea of someone teaching the kids about the ocean, what they would see and how to properly snorkel with the hopes that my youngest would learn to love it. I also loved the idea of a small group so it would be easier to keep together. When we got to the island Jen was great in communication about what to expect and where to meet. She had everything we needed to be successful and Mel was there to support taking pictures the whole time and looking out for creatures in the ocean. The kids loved the lesson and gained a lot of knowledge and then we got in the water. They both were great about staying together, pointing out what they saw and answering question we all had about what we saw. To the point that when we went on our own, and when we went to the ocean center the kids were able to name many types of fish because of Jen and Mel instead of just saying "we saw that, I wonder what it is called?" They went out of their way to try to ensure we had a safe, fun experience. We can't wait to see all the pictures they took (which will be a million times better than any I could have taken with my point and shoot underwater camera!) I will recommend them to anyone I meet who is coming to the island. My wife and I are repeat customers with The Ocean Project Maui. This is the third time we've taken one or both of our children (3 and 5) on one of their outings and we can't say enough good things about the work this team is doing. We'll keep going back as long as we come to Maui. We haven't found a way to beat the value -- they deliver a top-shelf, professional experience at a fraction of the cost others charge for less personal outings. PROS: As parents, all I truly care about for my kids is that they're: (1) safe, and (2) having fun. Nothing else matters much. Last week during our beach outing with CT & Mel, I was sitting in a beach chair watching them in the water teaching our kids about the ocean, and it dawned on me that I could completely relax because they were keeping our kids safe and giving them the time of their lives. I don't remember the last time I've been in the presence of my kids when their nagging virtually disappeared for several hours straight. Anyway, these folks offer an experience that's refreshingly down to earth, personalized to whatever age levels and needs you have, and focused on connecting with the water. CONS: Hmmm. I'd say that, if you're looking for an outing with a lot of fanfare, this one might not be for you. We are a family of three, one of us is super comfortable in the water and I am semi comfy but not a good swimmer. We have snorkeled about ten times. We also have a cautious and strong willed 3 year old (I know this sounds redundant). She doesn't adapt easily to new things. But we wanted to give the ocean a try. Mel and Jen were the best. Mel is super duper communicative and asks lots of good questions beforehand. Upon arrival they have a nice big mat set out and they were ready for the toddler. There were fish matching games and build your own reef games and other hands on activities. They're engaging and not bossy and the watch for kid cues well. They spent lots of time getting kiddo comfy on land with equipment as well as with us doing the same. Once in the water Mel took charge of kiddo and other instructor was with us. They had her up on a boogie board with an awesome ocean viewer. They brought her a sea urchin to check out. And she saw a turtle. And their main goal was for her to be comfy. They were very willing to go further with her if she showed signs but she wasn't there yet... And we as a family were prepared for that and just fine. She lasted for awhile and then hunger took over which led to a melt down out in the ocean. Mel and Jen were super patient and started steering her towards shore but also distracting her with more fish. Mel and Jen clearly know the ocean. We spotted a turtle hiding and they said we'd come back in a specific amount of time when the turtle would come up for air. Sure enough, we circled back around a bit later and got to watch the turtle come out of its hiding place and surface.  On the way back to the condo, kiddo unprompted asked if we could go out with Mel and Jen again. And she brought them up again the next day. Anyone with a toddler knows this is pretty much the highest praise a toddler gives.  Mel also randomly called a couple days later to see if we wanted to meet at baby beach to help kiddo get even more comfy. We were unfortunately on a snorkel boat so didn't get the message in time. Super nice.  Speaking of which on the molokini snorkel tour while kiddo didn't snorkel, she was ready to jump into the ocean no problem (life vest and under close supervision) and hopped in to the viewing raft they have for Littles. No fear at all. I'd be surprised if her time with Mel and Jen didn't make this possible. For families with young children I'd strongly strongly recommend this experience particularly if you have kids who haven't been out on the ocean much. This so pricy but it is well well worth the money. We were lucky and had some supportive grandparents that helped make this within our reach. read more

You get what you pay for. Save your money. This rust bucket was in disrepair; the sound system sucked. If you were not in the front of the boat, you could not here them. Minimal amenities. You cannot guarantee the weather or the whales, but that does not excuse poor service. Take Trilogy instead. read more

Such an awesome tour. We went to Aloha Mixed Plate for a late breakfast and were planning in going to Safeway but continued our walk onto Boss Frog's. They sell 2 tickets for $29 for the whale watching tour. Ends up being just under $33 with taxes... For 2 adults! So worth the nominal fee. Aboard the vessel Mail Tai's and ecofriendly IPA's van be purchased for less than in a typical city bar. Friendly, knowledgeable staff guide you through the adventure. Today was particularly amazing. Our group encountered dozens of whales at the end of the season. Very rare. Just lucky, I suppose. At any rate, tip the staff well at the end of your tour and bring your sunscreen. The ship was nice the crew was pleasant but just know don't bring anything of value on their tours. While in the water our property was stolen we questioned those around us and the crew. Even though we had a good idea who did it they offered to check bags at the harbor but never did. We should have called the police before docking. Try another ship and warn your friends. read more

This company has real marine biologists who will teach you and your family about the ocean, and then take you on an unforgetable snorkeling trip. Our 2 families, with young children ages between 5 and 8, had a wonderful time with Mel and CT. They were very patient with our kids who were apprehensive about snorkeling in the ocean, and as a result of their patience and encouraging, the children actually went snorkeling for the 1st time in the ocean! We saw so many beautiful sights under the water. Before going into the water, we were educated on the types of fishes and as we could identify them. My son actually said he wants to become a marine biologists like Mel and CT!! If there's one thing to do on Maui, this would be it. We would definitely do it again when we return to Maui. read more

This is by far truly the best money spent on maui. From the moment I called and spoke to CT and Mel it was a perfect match for us. They are kind and wonderful and knowlegable. I have 4 year old twins that love to swim (but are still only 4). I wanted to snorkel but knew that my twins were not ready and I would be a nervous wreck watching them and not enjoying myself. I stumbled upon the Ocean Project and decided to take the leap. We started the morning on the beach with an education piece with all of the hands on tools they had which kept the kids and us interested. Based on my sons fearfulness they decided to move locations to accommodate him. Really? Pack up ALL of this stuff and move locations because you want to ensure my son has a fantastic time too? I couldn't have been more thrilled. When we got to our next spot, time to suit up. Both were so patient and kind with us. After about an hour I felt comfortable enough to venture into deep waters with Mel and my husband while leaving the twins in the very capable hands of CT. (That is huge for me....I don't trust anyone with my kids...). Mel took us to the best spots and educated us on everything we saw. When we came back to shore for a break....my kids were snorkeling. Yes, snorkeling and loving every minute. They even brought their own underwater camera and had taken a ton of photos of us and sent them to us FREE! We never felt rushed, we felt we learned a ton, and best of all had a blast. You know those people you meet and just feel so comfortable with? Like family friends? This is Mel and CT. The only downside was that I did not know you can get sea sick from snorkeling. And seasick I got. As I was heaving up my stomach contents on the beach, CT was rushing to get me fresh water to pour on me and conditioner to put in my hair ( weird I know, but helped so much). We loved it so much we wanted to book another excursion with them before we left but didn't have time. I will definitely be booking another next time we are in maui. First off, we had age ranges from 3-69 in our group. Mel and Haley took us out this morning and if I could give them 10 stars, I would. Since we arrived in Kaanapali, Mel kept in contact, letting us know which day was going to be best and where we were going to meet, so we had the best conditions possible. The greeted us with smiles and were VERY prepared for our group. There were 6 of us and Mel knew all of our names and who had concerns (my mom has never been snorkeling and my 3 year old thinks he is an Olympic Swimmer). Mel and Haley took care of all of us, paying special attention to my 3 year old and my mom. Before we even got in the water, they showed us what fish we were going to see and what was going to happen when we got in the water. Once in the water, we saw a TON of fish and quite a few sea turtles. The experience was amazing. Mel is a passionate professional who is an EXPERT when it comes to water safety. We all felt comfortable the entire time we were in the ocean. It was great just having our family on this adventure. We didn't have to share Mel and Haley with anyone else and they were able to answer all our questions. They are well worth the $$$. We will be back!!!!! read more
