Decided to stop by Ishikawa Sushi and Grill in Saginaw for lunch. It is a tiny strip mall spot, but it has a cozy, welcoming vibe inside. ​Ordered the spider roll, spicy tuna roll, salmon roll, salmon skin roll, and tuna nigiri. Everything was really good. I was especially happy with the salmon skin roll because they actually included a generous amount of salmon skin, which a lot of places skimp on. ​Service was a little hit or miss. I had to ask for help once I sat down, and the younger staff seemed a bit indifferent. However, the gentleman behind the sushi bar (who I believe is the owner) was super nice and helpful, so I am not going to hold the minor service delay against them. ​Solid food quality and reasonable prices for a local spot. Long rant Got seated right away but took almost 15 min just to get waters. In that 15 min time frame, 3 tables got up and walked out without service. They were definitely short staffed & I'm not blaming the 2 waitresses at all. We ordered right when the waters came - 2 Kirin lights, a lg hot sake, 1 appetizer (edamame), a side of white rice, the hibachi steak with veggies and FRIED rice and 3 rolls. We were asked several times if we needed anything else; when it had been at least 15 - 20 min since we ordered and no food had come. Not even the edamame. We had to remind the waitress that we ordered multiple items, multiple times. When the food finally started coming out to us it was cold, had basically no flavor and the sushi rolls were poorly rolled and falling apart as soon as we tried to pick one up. We went for a late lunch and had a great meal. Glad this opened up in the neighborhood where we are overrun with chicken tender places and fast food. Everything we had was freshly prepared and tasted great. Nothing "spectacular" but standard Japanese cuisine. Wish they had a kids menu and descriptions for the rolls. I had really high hopes. I think we had some hits and misses. We started off our meal with vegetable tempura and tempura squid legs. I LOVE squid and I was actually excited to see that it was on the menu . I rather enjoyed the vegetable tempura and the squid well I wish for two things. I wish it had been a little bit warmer and I wish I had known that it was to have the sauce put directly on top of the fried food. Had I been aware it had sauce on it I would have asked for it on the side. Most squid I have been served tempura style comes from other a dipping sauce like a tentsuyu. This had some type of sweet some what bbq reminiscent sauce on top of it. I was not a fan of the sauce. The squid I definitely will give another shot without the sauce and hopefully it will be hot. I decided to have the hibachi beef fried rice. Unfortunately, I regretted my decision. It seemed it was more like a teriyaki sauce than anything at all on my hibachi. The oil wasn't much going on with my meal. It was fried rice with egg and onions and meat. I will not order that again. That particular dish was bland to me. My husband ordered a green dragon roll, which actually was pretty good. Maybe next time I will order some thing that is a little bit more to my liking. But for what we paid, I expected more. We've been waiting for a great place like this, and we have it now. We were greeted so warmly upon our arrival by kind, welcoming staff. The service was incredible. The food, DELICIOUS. I got the teriyaki chicken with miso soup and fried rice. Everything was perfectly seasoned. My husband got the katsu chicken and I tried it. It was also great. The sushi is some of the best around. And the prices are incredible! We've been back 4 times and it is now our go to Asian restaurant. Me and my Two kids (12 & 14) and it costs me $44. Decided to try the newest sushi place in our area. All I can say is WOW! The ambiance is nice and restaurant is newly renovated from the previous business that was in the building. It's clean and inviting! I ordered on their site for a to go order to have sushi at home. The process to order online was easy and they had my order being made when I got to the restaurant as I was only 5 minutes away. I was quickly greeted and asked to take a seat while I waited for my order. The roll and appetizer I ordered was prepared well and really enjoyed my meal! When my order was ready the waitress was so nice and sparked conversation with my 4 year old while I signed my check for my order. She was so sweet to my daughter and even gave her hug. After reading the reviews and walking into an empty restaurant we were a little nervous but the owner was super sweet and the food was good! Had the shaggy dog roll which was awesome and the chicken fried rice was also yummy. My daughter and I shared and got plenty to eat! The Japanese curry here is very good. Please be aware this is different from Southeast Asian curries (or Indian/Nepalese curries for that matter.) The flavor is more mellow and the sauce is thicker, closer to a gravy. Plenty of chicken and the veggies tasted fresh as well. I was less impressed by the sushi. We came in intending to place a to-go order, but unfortunately did not end up eating here. When we first walked in, it was unclear where to go or who to speak with, as there was no host present. We sat at the bar to order. I have celiac disease and asked whether any items could be made gluten-free. The staff did not seem to understand the question, which made me uncomfortable proceeding with the order. I chose a rainbow roll, but before it was prepared, the situation changed. Two male employees began arguing loudly behind the bar. One appeared to be in charge and told the other to leave. This happened directly in front of customers and created a very uncomfortable and unprofessional environment. The employee who was asked to leave later returned and slammed an order pad on the counter. At that point, we canceled our order and left. Service was 10/10. Everyone was super nice and welcoming. However, I was really hoping the food would be up to par with the excellent service. I ordered the teriyaki bento box ($14.95), fish taco ($7 for 2) squid salad ($4.95), and the scallop volcano roll ($18.95). You have to eat the fish taco when it's freshly made or the shell will get soggy. The fish was tender. The green sauce that comes on the taco reminds me of a cilantro avocado salsa verde. Completely threw me off. I think it would be better with spicy mayo or something different and maybe some cabbage or lettuce for extra crunch. The bento box came with 4 pieces of California roll, small portion of chicken teriyaki (no flavor just sweet) side of rice, 1 shrimp tempura, 4-5 pieces of tempura vegetables (my favorite) side of miso soup (bland) and it was suppose to come with a side salad that I didn't get. Squid salad tasted like every sushi place (don't think it's made fresh-store bought). The volcano scallop roll was the most disappointing. On the menu it was suppose to be $16.95 but I was charged $18.95. They did give a very good amount of scallops, but it was cold. There was barely any creamy sauce on the roll, and it seemed watered down. since this is a soft opening there's definitely room for improvement. Chef Roger has done an incredible job with the place. His roles and sashimi were better than some of the higher end places we've been too. His hospitality was exceptional. Made my wife and 10 month old feel at home. Not a lot of places do that, especially with a little one like that. The place was very nice and felt cozy. Even after we left Chef Roger noticed we forgot our babies bottle and came running out to hand it back to us. Definitely going back.
