Traveling through the area, I stopped because of the good reviews and photos from previous customers. Easy to view menu online, friendly attentive staff, and pretty clean restaurant. I ordered the Bao buns and a tonkotsu ramen to go. Portions were generous. The pork belly on the bao buns and ramen is thin sliced probably for ease of cooking; however it causes the pork to be easily overcooked and lacking that depth of flavor. The ramen broth does have good depth of flavor, but is far from my favorite ramens. The soft boiled egg was overcooked and did not have good flavor. The broth and meat did not reheat well, and even the noodles though I added them cold to hot broth to keep them from overcooking. A+ for the staff, but sadly the food falls flat. Been waiting a bit to try this place and despite the lackluster reviews I've seen, I decided to finally stop by. I can definitely see why there was a mixed bag of reviews. They're definitely very hit or miss and inconsistencies seem prevalent here in terms of the food quality. I didn't have the highest expectations, which should have made it easier to improve my outlook, but unfortunately it wasn't the case. I looked at a few other tables and the food looked decent. Service was spotty as we didn't really see our server stop by for the rest of the meal outside of the order and delivery of drinks/food. Had to flag down a different server for straws, which weren't initially provided after drinks were dropped off. I noticed several members of the staff sitting around at various locations in the restaurant eating a late lunch. It's nice that the restaurant provides meals for their employees, but it's probably a good recommendation that staff be provided a designated area in the back of the house for breaks/meals because when patrons dine in and see 3-4 staff members sitting around instead of delivering help to customers, it can come off as bad service. As for the food, it was a bit lackluster. Their were definitely some highlights, but a lot more misses. Saikou Ramen: Ordered the flagship ramen with mild spice at level 1(Based on namesake) and it was a bit underwhelming. I found the broth well flavored and seasoned, so I was definitely very happy about that. Most of the toppings were pretty good minus the ones that should really standout. The Chashu pork tasted like it was prepared well in advance or just not fresh. The usual soft boiled egg was definitely overcooked. The ramen noodles were very very al dente. It had way more chew than what it should've had in my experience. The description stated that there was supposed to be tobiko fish balls in the dish, but none were in sight. I really wanted to like this place. It's in a good location and looks like a great casual restaurant. Staff was very friendly. Saikou is set up to be more classy and modern with its contemporary decor. While the decor and the theme is nice, there is lot takes away from it. The service: nearly nonexistent. The waiter I had came to get me water and that was it. He spent his time by the kitchen or walking around doing nothing. The manager (I presume) came around and took my order and later got me food. I had to ask another waitress for utensils after I got my food. The restaurant was not clean. A busser came and took plates away from tables, but left the residual food on the table. The food: Overpriced. Some of the sushi rolls run almost $20- there are places in DFW with quality sushi that doesn't even run that expensive. I ended up ordering a bento box with teriyaki chicken. The chicken was super salty, and doused in teriyaki sauce. The salad hardly had any dressing- after asking for some, I never received it. The sushi and gyoza were ok. I always loved going here until the other day. Came in with my fiancé, we enjoyed ourselves and such and had a lovely time. But later on that night, I got sick. Then my fiancé got sick the next day. I'm still recovering as I'm writing this and the raw sushi roll that I got (rainbow roll) had tasted a bit different. The fish was somewhat lukewarm and we had came in around 8-9. Just be aware that the sushi isn't as fresh around this time and now I'm paying the price for trying to finish the food as I hate wasting food. We started with garlic edamame and it wasn't over powering garlic but had a good flavor. The garlic was minced and looked to be roasted. I would order this again. I had the Taro Tonkotsu Ramen. It came with 3 pieces of chashu and 2 eggs which most ramen places you get 2 pieces of meat and 1 egg. It was a pleasant surprise. It also came with bean sprouts, shiitake mushroom (which didn't see any), green onions, roasted onions and I opted to take out woodear and seaweed. The broth was light and I add spicy on the side so I could get the right amount of heat for my liking. My fiancé got the curry ramen. The curry broth already has a kick without adding any spicy to it. It was also a little thick and traditional curry flavor. It had 2 eggs, avocado and originally came with carrot and peas but he opted to take that out and he got chicken. You could get shrimp with this dish. To drink we shared Thai tea. Saikou sushi & RAMEN. This review is exclusively for the ramen experience. Food: Saikou tonkotsu ramen: I highly recommend this. The pork-based broth was creamy and rich. Chashu pork was soft & tender, not in the least chewy. Egg wasn't runny, but still tasty. If you love garlic, adding that extra dollar for garlic 3 ways will strengthen that garlicky flavor. There were 3 levels of spiciness. My boyfriend loves eating spicy food, and level 3 was not that spicy to him. I had level 2, which was relatively mild for me. I would daresay it's safe to try level 3 without a painful delight if you're into spiciness. Saikou curry ramen: A bit of a disappointment compared to the saikou tonkotsu. The bowl reminded me of a curry dish rather than the marriage of curry and ramen. They were out of the bone-in-crispy Cornish hen, so I was agreeable to substituting shrimp instead. My ramen felt like an experimentation given the untraditional ingredients of edamame beans and carrots. The feels of ramen was lacking, especially since chashu pork or soft egg were not included. Moreover, adding in the avocado did not have me slurping my meal away. Saikoudelic fries: This appetizer was similar to tok fries from shinjku station. Fries were perfectly cut into thick strips and well seasoned with salt. Dipping sauce was mixed with katsuo fumi - just mediocre. Décor: There was a sushi bar at the front of the restaurant. You have the option to sit at the bar, booth, or regular tables. I was digging the holiday theme decorations at this time of year. Interior was clean. Service: Excellent service. The servers are very efficient. They did not lag in any aspect from getting us our drinks to delivering the bill. Our dirty plates were also consistently cleared throughout the meal. read more
