This is definitely THE place to try udon in Houston. It's a reasonable price and the portion is very filling. This place is better for smaller groups (4-6 people max) because all of the seating are booths. There is plenty of seating though. Service is also great. For appetizers, I've tried the takoyaki and fried calamari. Both really great options. Their shrimp tempura is really good too. My favorite go-to udon bowl is the sukiyaki one. I keep wanting to try other ones when I come here, but I just end up getting the sukiyaki one lol. If you like a small hint of sweetness with savory, this is a great one to try. I love love love the onsen egg that comes with it and there is a generous amount of beef that comes with it too! I like how it doesn't feel as heavy as ramen, but you're still pretty full afterwards. Talk about a hidden gem! The place is so small that you could easily pass it up, but don't make that mistake! I came here for lunch around 11:15am on a Friday, the place was full by 11:40am. I finally got to try Ishin Udon for dinner this past Saturday. I've had this place on my mind for the longest time but never made it out. It was my only meal for the day and I was starving after partying all night. We started with an order of Takoyaki and chicken Karrage which were both solid. You get really juicy tender chicken thigh pieces with a light crunchy coating and really good spicy mayo. The takoyaki had a good amount of octopus in there as well. I ordered the special of the day which was the Niki Niki Udon. It looked really comforting and hearty in the photo and I felt that's what I needed. I got plenty of miso braised brisket pieces in my bowl along with green onion and chopped ginger. The soup could cure anything you're feeling or going through. My friend got the mentaiko cream udon which was creamy, rich, and savory. It was a good balance with the pieces of cucumber, shredded seaweed, and masago in there. And yes, their noodles taste exactly like the frozen shirakiku udon noodles I buy from the Asian market. I got the ginger pork udon and enjoyed both the broth and the noodles. Not a fan of the pork at all as it was super thinly sliced with lots of fat mixed in. Very unappetizing. Ended up throwing most of it away. My friends got the carbonara udon, sukiyaki udon, and beef brisket curry rice and I got to sample theirs. The carbonara was extremely creamy and I enjoyed my sample although I think by the end of our meal my friend was getting tired of how heavy it was. Sukiyaki udon was decent too, although the broth was on the sweet side. My favorite was probably the brisket curry rice as it was essentially beef stew in curry form, yum! The curry was rich and thick and the rice cooked a bit drier than regular rice (which is how curry rice should be cooked). Also enjoyed my side of tsukemono (pickled vegetables) consisting of Napa cabbage and daikon. Overall 4 stars for the food. The reason this place gets 5 stars is because service here was exceptional to say the least. First, seeing that my hands were full, they helped me sit my baby in the high chair. Then they let me refrigerate the cake I brought for my friends birthday and provided the lighter, knife and plates....and helped us light the candles! Ishin is yet another great addition to Bellaire because there aren't that many restaurants serving quality Japanese udon. We had the beef nikka udon and the carbonara udon. Both were very good. The beef niku udon was flavorful with tender thin slices of beef. The carbonara was an interesting fusion of Japanese and Italian. It was creamy and light in the beginning, but I know that I wouldn't be able to finish a whole order all on my own so I'm glad we shared. For sides we had fried shumai and pumpkin tempura. The shumai was average but I loved the crispy batter of the tempura. I like how you have the option to add small and inexpensive sides for $1-2 for those who just want a bit of variety. We dined here last night with a group of three. We joined the waiting list at 9:15 PM with 14 small groups ahead of ours. We were seated at 9:48 PM so I didn't consider it a long wait. We ordered hot tea but got two cups of hot water instead. I had to chase down the waiter to get hot teas. We ordered: * Tan Tan Udon - best udon bowl of the group, very flavorful and noodles were cooked perfectly. * Mentaiko Cream Udon - I loved the flavor but didn't like how lukewarm it was served. * Bolognese Udon - this was more like a pasta dish, not bad but I probably wouldn't order this again as it's not my type of udon dish. * Agedashi Tofu - typical, nice portion for $4.50 * Takoyaki - this was served too soft, wished it had a slightly crispier texture. * Chicken Karage - this was not crispy as expected, soft batter. I definitely do not think their fryer is hot enough. Service was good but the dining experience a little rushed as waiters immediately approach your table on last bite to clear bowls/plates. Overall it was a great dining experience. There aren't many Houston restaurants that specialize in udon so I'm happy to find this one! A huge plus in my book. (5/5): SUKIYAKI UDON: This one had a clear sweet broth. The thinly sliced beef was delicious! I would want this with all the udons they have. There was a good topping to noodle ratio. I would definitely get this one again. (4/5): TAN TAN UDON: Creamy tangy broth. It had a kick of heat but not too spicy. I added some of the TOGARASHI (Japanese chili powder) into my soup. The noodles had a nice chew. The PICKLED MUSTARD GREEN was interesting. I recommend getting the KAKIAGE. It mixed veggies strips that are tempura fried. Honestly, a majority of it was ONIONS but I liked it. It added a needed texture and sweetness to the udon. Random but their HOT GREEN TEA is potent. I had a cup at dinner around 7:30 and was not able to fall asleep until pass 2 am. It had a concentrated flavor and FREE REFILLS. I like that they leave a water pitcher on the table for you. This place is a bit hidden in the plaza. The entrance is across from Ohn Korean Eatery. Both doors have the same wooden designs so it might look confusing. Walking in, the place was much smaller than I expected. The booth can sit comfortably up to four people and the rest of the tables are for two people only. Not ideal for groups. The menu is categorized into different types of udon. Traditional, Italian udon, or curry udon. We ordered the green tea as suggested by the waitress which ended being a not so good idea. We ordered the fried calamari and agedasi tofu to start off. For some reason, we were brought the takoyaki instead. Honestly I didn't mind but that was not what we ordered. Agedasi tofu was alright, a bit flat. Takoyaki was crunchy on the outside and came out still hot. I enjoyed it much more than the agedasi tofu. We ordered the sukiyaki udon off the traditional selection and the crab meat truffle cream udon off the Italian style selection. The crab meat truffle udon did not live up to its name. I could taste the truffle but the overall taste didn't interest me. On the other hand, the traditional udon was much better. The sukiyaki had a sweet taste to it and it was a simple udon bowl with thin slices of beef and veggies. All of which blended well together with the sweetness of the broth. I thought the pickled radish complemented the dish well. The pork katsu was a bit dry, but when you immerse it in the curry sauce, it works out. I thought the curry was alright. He gave great recommendations, and I ordered the sukiyaki udon, the tan tan, and the shrimp pasta. The sukiyaki comes with an egg and has a sweet broth. My friends and I were lucky enough to be the third party in line at 1:05pm because after we put our names down the line grew exponentially! I am a native Houstonian born and raised so this review reflects the udon I had in Houston that were mostly store bought. Udon: 4 stars I loved the selection of udon. Even though this restaurant focuses on udon I was surprised by all the unique options so it was hard to pick one because I wanted to try everything! I ended up having the waiter pick between the three udon I was torn between and he selected the Ginger Pork Udon. The broth was lighter than I expected. It comes with mayonnaise which I believe is Japanese mayonnaise but it added a richness to the broth without making it overly salty. About 1/4 of my bowl was covered in the ginger pork which was on the sweet side and had the texture of the brisket you'd find in pho. I enjoyed the texture of the udon but I am not an expert. The udon ranged in price from $6.50 to $16 so it was pretty reasonable. My friend was impressed by how much Katsu came with her curry udon so we all felt like it was a good bang for the buck. Takoyaki: 4 It tasted like a takoyaki you'd find at any restaurant. It was perfectly cooked and crispy but it won't wow you. The curry rice here is delicious, probably my favorite in Houston. It has a lot of flavor and great thickness. I got mine with a katsu pork and it was crispy. Sitting right next to sister restaurants Ohn Korean Eatery and Mein, Ishin Udon is opening its doors to udon and noodle fiends alike! I haven't given a 5-star rating in a while, but I think Ishin Udon deserves a little extra boost for being the first little udon shop solely dedicated to the thick, chewy, wavy noodle and for having options that I have only seen before in NYC! Fantastically priced, a good variety on the menu, casual and fun atmosphere with good food-- what's not to love? They just opened 2 weeks ago, so they may still be working out some stuff... regardless, their current stuff is delicious :D My sister and I dropped in for a quick lunch after the Yelp Sweat 1000 workout event, and this place didn't disappoint! The menu is full of pictures (eyes eat first!) and is pretty extensive. From more traditional noodle soups to "Italian" style (think bolognese and carbonara), the menu also boasts curry rice, an assortment of appetizers, and randomly, Texas Toast. Just because. Carbs on carbs on carbs. I was super excited when I saw the menu, because carbonara, mentaiko, uni cream udon are things I usually only see in NYC. We ordered the carbonara udon, Tan Tan udon soup, and agedashi tofu. The server double checked to see if we liked spicy, because he said the tan tan udon was very spicy to begin with, so we started with the mild version. Did Ishin live up to its name of udon expert? For us, the little restaurant totally did! The carbonara udon was super dreamy-creamy, flavored by bits of bacon, a bit of pepper, and topped with an egg that screamed it wanted to star in some seductive adult films. Nom. Pretty. Darn. Rich. The tan tan udon? One sip of the soup, and whooo-whee-- super rich and spicy! But pleasantly spicy and nothing that you have to down cups of water for. Thumbs up to that one as well. For both dishes, the udon noodles were springy and QQ (chewy), yasss. The agedashi tofu came as 4 large piping hot pillows of tofu deliciousness, topped with the usual bonito flakes and situated in a pool of sauce. The tofu was yummy, maybe not the best I've ever had, but it sure hit the spot and was great for sharing. The servers were all super nice and checked on us often, and our food came out relatively quickly (less than 10 minutes). Lots of tables for two and tables for four as well. Overall, I will have to say I think most people will not be wow-ed by most of the traditional udon soups unless they are hard-core udon experts. Traditional udon soups are, in my humble opinion, super light/slightly bland to begin with (Sorry, Japan!), so I bet more people will be happier with the more "crazy" or creative udon dishes! This place has pretty flavorful udon. We usually get the sukiyaki and the niku, and they have never disappointed. The chicken karage is also pretty good as well. The one issue I have is the last time I went somebody added an extra $10 to the total after I already signed the receipt and tipped. I noticed because my friend and I split the bill in half based on the amount we should have been charged and then when my charge actually posted, it was $10 higher. Kinda sketch so make sure you guys check your receipts to make sure your total is the actual amount that gets posted. I've never ran into this issue at any other restaurant and it may just be an honest mistake, but I would still be weary of the practice. This was a very good udon place. We ordered the Tan Tan udon, Niku udon, Niku Tama udon, Sukiyaki udon, Kakuni udon, and curry beef udon. Everything was delicious! The serving size was appropriate. Solid udon, great chew on the noodles. Ordered the niku niku, brisket was good but definitely heavier than sliced beef. I would want to try the sukiyaki next time. Added the onsen tamago and yolk was perfectly runny. read more

The garlic pork udon was quite tasty. I was actually kind of surprised given that I got it dropped off by a friend. They put the liquid in a separate container from the noodles and meat so that you can combine them once you got home. For $8 it's a pretty hearty meal, with great flavor.
