So there are a lot of things I really like about this restaurant. Amazing food - I had the curry cod, and it was full of flavor and amazing. One of my friends found the espresso martini life changing. The service was kind, caring, and attentive. The ambience was a bit weird because it felt a bit like a hotel restaurant and a bit like make-shift garden, but it was clean, modern, and well lit. However, it somehow had the A/C blowing hard, like near 65 degrees. The only other thing that was a bit strange was that their key dish was Kangaroo meat... and they were out. I would love to go back again to try it... but running out of your top dish was a bit unexpected. read more

My friend and I got brunch at Isla & Co, an Australian restaurant tucked away on the first floor of a hotel. They also have other locations across NYC. The mushroom toast was pretty solid with well-seasoned mushrooms, microgreens, and a poached egg. I really enjoyed their multi-grain toast because it was fluffy yet slightly toasted and crunchy. Best part was that it wasn't too hard to cut through like some of the other mushroom toasts at other brunch places. The kimchi toast was just alright. The egg was fluffy but the kimchi was too moist which made the bread soggy. Also felt like the kimchi was on the tart side (compared to older kimchi that is more savory/salty). The nutella latte was pretty well mixed but it felt more like milo x coffee (which I enjoyed) and less so hazelnut-specific nuttiness. The macchiato was pretty standard. It was busy weekend so it was pretty packed. Our food took a *long* time to come, to the point we did ask for it a couple times and maybe other tables who ordered after us got their food first. The table next to us who roughly came at the same time also had to wait for their food. I liked the tropical decor and nice/polite staff. Came here for Sunday brunch with a 1 PM resso for four people. It's located inside the lobby of a hotel. It's an Australian brunch spot, so some of the menu items have an Aussie twist to it, but you still also have some of your regular brunch items. I wanted to try the kangaroo skewers but I knew I was alone in this, so I ended up getting the Sausage Rolls (thai spiced pork mince, puff pastry, sweet chili sauce) and a side of Chicken Salt Fries. The sausage rolls were good but I guess they're on the "for the table" section for a reason. After a few, it gets to be a bit much. I was deciding between the sausage rolls and the Crispy Chicken Sando. After trying a bite of my friend's chicken sando, I immediately regretted not getting it. The fries were good - they're battered fries, which I love. I saw a few tables that had an espresso martini flight, which looked cool. I thought the food was delicious. I was very pleasantly surprised by how thoughtful and tasty the Isla's Power Bowl was. A true vegetarian meal, it didn't make me jealous at all about the carnivorous foods by table mates had. The sticky date pudding was also a must try and great for sharing. Not everyone enjoyed it but I thought it was deliciously sweet. A great restaurant for not that expensive a price in Manhattan. I've been here three times -- twice for dinner and once for breakfast -- and every visit has been super delicious. For dinner, we ordered the pasta and the chicken Parmesan, and both were flavorful, well-prepared, and very satisfying. Nice food, great service! This restaurant came up in the list of must try brunches in Midtown. This was walking distance to our hotel. We were so impressed by the entry and the restaurant ambience. It's a small place but very cute. We got the kimchi sambal Scramble and breakfast roll. The scramble had generous kimchi but no sambal. I would have liked if there was sambal as it would have cranked up the flavors a notch. I got hash browns too and they were small but very tasty nevertheless. I had this place bookmarked because I had to check it out. I've never really had Australian before so had to try it out and it's not too far from where I work so went for lunch with my colleagues. The space is nicely decorated, but if you come during prime lunch time it is best to make reservations. After looking over the menu it all seemed like American food. The only thing that caught my eye were the Kangaroo skewers. I expected it to be gamey, but glad it wasn't. It tasted like well done beef. I also had spicy prawns or shrimp with vodka rigatoni. We stopped by Isla & Co. in Midtown and loved everything we ordered! We got the espresso martini flight, the breakfast burrito (upgraded to truffle fries for only $1 more), and the Isla cheeseburger with a side salad. Everything was amazing. The espresso martini flight was definitely strong! I shared it with my mom and couldn't have finished it on my own. Our favorite flavor was the Coco Devine. We wanted to try the strawberry cheesecake waffles too, but we were so stuffed from all the food that we just couldn't fit another bite. There's only one restroom in the main dining area (unisex), and there was usually a short wait, but you can ask the hostess for a card to access the lower-level restrooms, which were very clean and much less crowded. I don't know if I'll be back on my next NYC trip just because there are so many amazing spots I still want to try, but I'd absolutely recommend Isla & Co. to anyone looking for great food, drinks, and a cozy Midtown vibe. read more

My friend and I shared: - kimchi scramble: I wish it came with a little more kimchi. It was a pretty big portion though. Essentially it was a large portion of scrambled egg on multigrain toast with some kimchi on top. - breakfast burrito: I'm not normally a burrito person, but the pictures looked good so I was influenced to order it. This is truly a 3.5 review. I'm just not sure the final price was worth the food and if I'd choose to return. The atmosphere and service hit all the marks. The food was okay for me. Our group tried the kangaroo appetizer. While I was hesitant to eat Roo, I want to be adventurous and try new things, too! So while in an Australian themed restaurant.... The dish was good. Kangaroo did not taste like chicken ;-) The meat was chewy, more like a medium well steak. I'm not a big red meat person, so take my review with that lens. My husband and I shared two meals - the fish and chips and the vodka rigatoni (minus the chilis as my husband has lower spice tolerance and our server warned us it can run spicy). Both were good, just not to die for. There was just one larger piece of fish in the fish and chips. It wasn't greasy (yay) but wasn't the best fish & chips we've had. The espresso martinis were a highlight. Four different signature options. The OG was my fave with delicious espresso forward flavor. The one with banana liquor is worth a try. Their happy hour menu is 3-6pm including weekends and pretty good discounts. We got the Kung pao cauliflower (too saucy and not crispy, wouldn't get again) and the Margot Robbie which is my favorite new cocktail in a while (milky and refreshing, without the cloying flavor of most milky drinks) for $10 each. I finally got around to checking out Isla and Co at their 38th Street location just west of Fifth Avenue. Given it is at the base of a hotel, you walk in and turn left to see a bar and then left you see the front desk of the restaurant. Otherwise, the space is similar to other restaurants in this Midtown area. Inside, the tables are not too crammed together, but your conversation will only be private to the extent the ambient noise covers your conversation. I had no reservation and was seated immediately with a smile in a good location by the welcoming hostess. My server Jay was very enthusiastic. Though he made one error with the check, he was apologetic and explained what he was doing to correct the issue. He was a good example of service with a smile. I ordered the Coopers Pale Ale first and quickly followed with the Kangaroo Tucker, eventually ordering their Aussie version of Chicken Parm. The Cooper Pale Ale has a considerable amount of yeast or wheat in it, giving it a cloudy dark amber appearance. It's very good and puts the oil can to shame. The Kangaroo Tucker on a bed of tahini with small cucumber chunks is quite good. Kangaroo has a slight gameyness to it, but no more than goat or lamb and tastes similar to lamb. Do not get your expectations up for these skewers, thinking along the lines of metal skewers for kebabs. They are actually two, four inch long toothpicks with small chunks of marinated kangaroo, which are seasoned well to match the herbs and chili crunch in the tahini. The sesame seed oil ground down for the tahini adds a layer of unctuous quality and richness, with the fresh cucumber cutting across for juxtaposition, but the pickled onions were not evident to my palate. This is an appetizer whose description as skewers at $19 should not mislead one to think this could ever be a main plate or worth sharing for the whole table as labeled on the menu. It's tasty, but misleading in portion size. I ordered another Coopers at a reasonable rate of $9 and the Aussie version of Chicken Parma with the upcharge for the prosciutto. It's one flattened chicken breast with Parmesan and Pomodoro sauce. This is supposed to be the best selling meal at Aussie pubs and it is good. However, expectations shotbe managed if one has had Chicken Parm at any number of great Italian restaurants. Here, the chicken cutlet was good, but not as crispy as desired. The cheese was good, but not like the sharp Parmesan you would otherwise expect. The sauce was actually surprisingly good, but the $6 upcharge for the prosciutto did not hit with the impact desired. The Fri that come with the dish were actually quite good, as was the very small herb salad. Isla and Company is a good restaurant, but the Australian fingerprint is not as distinct as one might expect. The food is good with nothing objectionable, but you should come her with managed expectations. Servit is good and the floor manager came by to double check that all was in order and had been ordered. Management wants to move the tables along and ensure the orders are flowing in with no untoward delay. Jay was handling his business properly. In this time of inflation, this was not a $75 plus tip value experience. Isla and Co cannot be held responsible for this, but this is surely a challenge for restaurants to meet and overcome in these times. When a customer evaluates whether to go out or stay home, a $90 tab with tip for one person for this fare will cause one to consider staying home or consider other dining options. 3.2 stars read more

The food is very good with a lot of attention paid to every detail. I ordered a delivery of Fish & Chips, a Green Caesar Salad and the Aussie Chicken Parmesan. The Fish & Chips consisted of two pieces of cod, lightly breaded with fresh mint leaves, some pickled red onions, fresh dill, house made tartar sauce and crispy fries...excellent. The Aussie Chicken Parmesan was pan fried with tasty tomato sauce and nice mozzarella cheese...delicious. The Green Caesar Salad was also terrific with fresh greens, house made croutons and two small containers of house made dressing. (The extra dressing was appreciated!) Delivery was quick. We did not make a reservation but were able to put yourself on the waiting list so that is what we did. When we checked in, we still had to wait about 15 mins so in total the time detailed during the wait was accurate. An Aussie brunch place in midtown on the first floor of the Hendricks Hotel. I still haven't figured out what Aussie food is, though it seems similar to New American, which incorporates a varying degree of international influences to mix up traditional European/American dishes. Overall would recommend though certain dishes were better than others. I gathered with several friends for brunch a couple weekends ago, within 5 minutes of our reservation at 1:30pm, we were seated. It's a little hard to tell how large the restaurant is from outside, it seats about 50-60 people in a railroad layout meaning narrower from the front and deeper. There are a few smaller tables outdoor under the overhang, which opens directly to a bar along the left wall. Walking back into the restaurant a handful of tables along the walkway opening to a section with several larger tables in the back. Food--we ordered: - Kungpao Fried Cauliflower $15: crispy sweet spicy battered cauliflower, chili, cilantro, fried shallots, chimichurri. This was ok, kinda a misnomer since it wasn't truly "kungpao" flavor, more like sweet and sour. Need to eat this right away or will get soggy, the chimichurri sauce felt extraneous bc the cauliflower was already very saucy and salty. - Smashed Avocado Toast (vg, gfo) $16: multigrain toast, smashed avocado, marinated feta, pickled onion, heirloom tomatoes, salsa verde, toasted seeds. A solid avocado toast, pretty to look at, a good balance of texture and flavor. - Pulled Pork Hash (gfo) $22: multigrain toast, sautéed potato hash, pulled pork, poached eggs, hollandaise, fried parsley, chili threads. This was really delicious! The pulled pork had a lovely smoky, sweet bbq flavor, the egg was cooked perfectly runny on the inside. Would recommend! - Lemon Broccolini Orecchiette (vg) $18: lemon pesto, capers, garlic crumb, fried parsley. Very tasty though on the rich side. If you're looking for a creamy pasta get this. - Fried Fish Sando (gfo) $22: toasted brioche bun, battered atlantic cod, tartar sauce, gem lettuce, pickles, french fries. The portion of fish on this sandwich was very generous, and the fish was fresh. The bread was good, the pickles were definitely needed as the tartar sauce was on the blander side, wish there were more crunchy pickles minced into this. The fries were decent, slight crispy. This was my dish and unfortunately there was an execution issue because oil was constantly dripping out of the fish as I was eating it. Getting approx 3 tablespoons of oil in a puddle on my plate was pretty off-putting. - Aussie Iced Coffee $8: this was a like an iced coffee with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. A decadent and tasty treat. The staff was cordial and on point for the most part, we had to flag down our server for the check though whenever we needed something (water, napkins, an extra plate), they brought it right away. Was in the area and decided on a whim to come here for a casual dinner with my friend! We were able to be seated immediately without a reservation on a weekend evening (though we came on the earlier side). Loved how cute and extensive the menu was with all their little nods to Austrialian classics! I was initially eyeing the burger but my server (who was very welcoming and knowledgeable about cross contamination risks after I shared my gluten allergy) advised me that the fries might not be safe for me. I ended up getting the power bowl and even without adding any additional protein it was super filling! I lived how fluffy they were able to cook the quinoa base, all the other ingredients tasted really fresh and flavorful - I especially loved the sweet potatoes! The sauce that it comes with definitely has a kick, would recommend mixing it in very well if you have a low spice tolerance like me lol.
