We never had the opportunity to discover whether the food was as good as it appeared on Yelp. Upon entering, we were barely greeted by the hostess. We had three adults and a toddler with us who clearly needed a high chair. There were plenty of empty areas, but the non-communicative hostess seated us between two large groups of people without even asking if we needed a high chair or bringing one for us. So, we had to ask for one and switch tables so as not to disturb and crowd the other large parties. Our toddler was being good, so that should not have been a problem. Then we sat there for quite awhile and no one stopped by for drink orders or anything. They were NOT very busy. When we noticed no one else getting their food, we decided to leave. We were starving, so it was very unfortunate. We were very disappointed!!! If I could give 0 stars, I would. We decided to go out to breakfast this AM and, of course, all the best places were super busy so we settled for Island Cafe. Normally I wouldn't even write anything because it's Island Cafe, but this experience was exceptionally bad. Aside from the food be subpar, the service was unusually horrible. While ordering, we asked for the scary face pancake for my son and asked if they could add chocolate chips to it. The server said sure. When our food came, not only were there no chocolate chips in my sons food, the eggs were also wrong on my bf's plate (he likes the eggs a little runny so he can mix then into his potatoes). My son didn't care too much about the chocolate chips so we didn't mention that, but we did KINDLY ask for the correct style eggs and the server said she would get them out asap (over-easy eggs take like 2 mins). We tried to get our server's attention many times, but it was like she was ignoring us or had forgotten about us. I kid you not.. over 20 freaking minutes later after we were pretty much all done eating and my bf's potatoes were cold, the eggs finally came out. She literally just tossed them on the table and ran away. No apologies, nothing. Since we were pretty much done, we just decided to get the check and leave. Again, it was like pulling teeth to get her to come back to our table to ask for the check. Finally I just had to holler out at her as she was passing by. She said she'd get it. 10 mins later our check comes and is simply tossed on our table in the same fashion as the eggs, and she darted away. I never do this, but a big ZERO was placed on the gratuity line. Avoid Island Cafe like the plague. We will gladly just wait in line for Dad's or Calico next time. When I saw eggs Benedict on the menu, I was excited, but when I tasted it, I almost sent it back. It is so easy to make I'm not sure how it could have turned out the way it did. It was also so noisy I had to yell...that might be hard to resolve. If I eat there again, I'll stick with the minimalist breakfast. read more

Severely underrated for breakfast. While not the fanciest breakfast place in town, its menu options are hearty and usually made well. I've eaten at IC at least 10 times over the last year, and I can only recall one item being "meh". I wish the service was a little faster some trips, and I wish they had more outdoor seating. We originally wanted to try one of the more popular breakfast spots in Anacortes on a Sunday. The wait was so long so took a walk down the street and thankfully found Island Cafe with plenty of open tables. We shared the veggie scramble and short stack pancakes. Way too overpriced for what you're getting. Came here with my family (10+ people) and we pretty much got to try many of the key things on the menu. Overall, many of the things here seemed like there was little to no preparation for it. For example, the carrots that came with the steak dinner were yellow (preservatives, perhaps?). We were kind of puzzled by that, and the color was kind of off-putting. Anyways, avoid the steak meal, because, for lack of better words, the meat pretty much looked and tasted like rubber :/. I had the French dip, and that was alright. The meat was beef jerky dry, but thankfully, there was dip was able to break it down a bit. Everything else was pretty generic. The fish and chips and the breakfast food looked like they were decent. If I were to redo this meal, I'd go for the generic foods (ex. hamburger, fries, etc). I usually take pictures of everything I eat, but this time, I didn't feel inclined to. Kind of regret it now, because the pictures would probably help better illustrate my review. An associate and I found ourselves in downtown Anacortes at the Island Cafe during lunchtime. On the way to our table we deliberately slowed down as we passed the delicious wispy peaks of merangue perched on top of the chocolate and lemon pies displayed in the pie rack. Because of my grandmother I have always appreciated eating pie however rarely order it in restaurants as it never meets my lofty expectations! Removed from delicious temptation and seated in the large newer space facing ESPN on a flat screen TV in the back of the restaurant, a friendly face took our drink orders of fresh brewed ice tea. After giving us the WiFi password, she mentioned the specials posted on the board that I had somehow missed while walking in, (remember, I was distracted by pies) When informed of chicken fried steak as a lunch special, it wasn't even necessary to open the menu! I intended to satisfy the ever present craving for one of the basic food groups, gravy. Service was attentive and the tea glasses were bottomless. Lunch was finally placed in front of us though it didn't really take that long. The CFS was smothered in white gravy along side the scoop of mashed potatoes. The steamed veggie mix tasted as good as they looked with a dab of butter melting and flowing over the beans,and red peppers. 2 slices of garlic toast lined the edge of the plate that was inviting me to dig in with my fork. After a healthy dash of salt and a dose of pepper, the plate became clean rather quickly. The adequate portion of breaded tenderized steak was prepared offsite by SYSCO or possibly another institutional food supplier, not made fresh in house, tasted good enough to eat it all, but not the best I ever had. Appetite was now satisfied and It was time to go back to work. There is no room for pie this visit as that would require time for a nap! Lunch with beverage and tip $30. read more

Last night dying of hunger, my boyfriend and I drove through Anacortes hoping to find somewhere open other than fast food at 9pm after driving all day before checking into our hotel. We walked in to a FULL restaurant at 9:03, and they turned us away saying they were closed for the night. Not even offering us a seat at the bar. Tired and hungry, we walked back to the car. We parked next to the island cafe, and saw the waitresses cleaning up, but noticed they were open for another 57 minutes. Fearful that we would irritate them by coming in so late and having our food spit in, we asked and said we didn't mind leaving if they were closing up for the night. The waitress graciously sat us and made us feel right at home. She even brewed a fresh pot of coffee for us. Not to mention - the food was excellent and fresh....seriously, they might have the best hash browns I've ever had. Anywhere that serves breakfast all day also gets an A+ from me. I've been visiting the Island Cafe on a regular basis, ever since they moved from their previous location. I don't think I've had any meals there other than breakfast, though. Staff are attentive and responsive. My coffee cup is never emptied more than 25% or so before someone is filling it. This place has a bar atmosphere. I tried their chorizo breakfast - scrambled eggs with homemade chorizo and hash browns. The eggs were disappointing but ok. The chorizo wasn't very good. I could eat the eggs but not the hash browns. Hash browns were barely brown. You can tell by the flavor of the hash browns that they fry them using some kind of yucky fake butter. I got the crab egg Benedict and it was fantastic! For only $1 more than their other breakfasts it was very worth it. Creamy (if slightly bland) Hollandaise sauce. Eggs slightly overcooked (not runny at all) the crab was salty but yummy with everything else.
