Really, really solid Jamaican food served mainly to-go and quick service over the counter. Yes there are a few tables to sit at, but it's very much a family-run restaurant focused on food, not ambiance. So let's talk about the food. First, the meat patties are as good as I've had anywhere. Beef, spicy beef, veggie, curry chicken, they've got a selection and they are all bangers. The crust on these is just perfect, light and fluffy. Good luck to anyone trying to make a better meat pie than this place. The larger dishes are all very good. They are absolute experts with cabbage. And they serve breakfast, like real Jamaican breakfast. For example, the saltfish and ackee breakfast is a real experience that comes from the heart, and it's delicious. Also, be sure to ask for a few drops of the homemade Scotch bonnet hot sauce they keep at the counter. A must. In closing, Island Classic is close to my business in Longwood, and I go all the time. Walked in as a FIRST TIME customer asking for a plate of oxtails and curry goat. The cashier proceeded to just inform the lady in the back that was preparing the plates of what our meat selection was, but didn't ask us about anything else about what we wanted on our plates and gave us a total. I was very disappointed to see that they just assumed that I wanted red beans and rice. When I saw my plate I asked if they have white rice as an option. They asked me why I didn't ask for white rice but failing to acknowledge the fact that I have never eaten here before and why are you assuming every customer wants red beans and rice? That's unacceptable. The plate with the curry goat had cabbage on it when they don't eat that. Most restaurants ask me and I figure that they ask to prevent this very issue. For example: Cashier: " With the Oxtails, would you like white rice or red beans and rice? Would you like cabbage and plantains as well? " Oxtails and curry goat tasted good though!! Found this little gem when on hunt for something quick while on lunch break. The restaurant is located in a little plaza. They having seating inside available. I was greeted as soon as I walked in. Hole in the wall place that I pass every day to and from work and never noticed it yesterday. The staff is super warm and friendly, the prices are great, and the food is okay. I got the curry chicken lunch special, which comes with rice and your choice of a side. That is a dumpling (boiled or fried), plantains, or cabbage salad. The chicken was cooked perfectly. Fall off the bone tender. Sadly, though, I got a lot of bones vs. meat, and the curry flavor wasn't very present. The rice was super bland, no flavor at all. The boiled dumpling was hard and just plain pooled dough. There wasn't anything in it, which was disappointing, but perhaps I just like my Asian dumplings filled with stuff too much and hope/expect all dumplings to have a middle. I'll go back and try other dishes since it's close to my office and inexpensive, but today's meal was a little underwhelming. read more

It was my first time trying this place, and I must say it did not really impress me. While the flavor in the jerk chicken was good, it felt dry. NOTE: More of a 3.5 star. Due to the high rating of this place, I was super excited to possible have my first go-to Jamaican food spot. Unfortunately, my visit didn't seem to deserve that honor. Not saying it was bad, but it wasn't great either. THE PRO'S: It's hole in the wall status, the smells, the obviously Jamaican staff, the steamed cabbage. THE CON'S: Looking at me crazy for wanting extra jerk sauce on my chicken and ox-tail gravy on my rice, not having pineapple soda, and the chicken seeming not to be cooked along with the jerk. It might seem like I'm being picky and hard @ss... because I AM! When it comes to my favorite foods I don't play games. Those seemingly 'minor' things didn't make me feel happy. Again, I didn't dislike the place of the food but if you are going to be highly rated then be totally awesome. The cabbage was really good, rice was ok, and the chicken was tender and had flavor but didn't have that jerk kick and as I mentioned before it seemed to not be slow-cooked WITH the jerk spices. There IS a difference y'all. I could be wrong about this but I've had tons of this in my life and this wasn't IT. First time we picked up to go and brought the food down the street to eat at Hourglass Brewery. 2nd visit picked up a curry goat and ox tail combo (for a few dollars more) and brought it home to eat. The combo was more than enough food for the two of us. There are a handful of tables in the restaurant (each time we were in the majority of orders were take out) and next vislt we will dine in and try the whole fried snapper. Mom and pop Caribbean place in Longwood that brings a nice variety to the area. When you walk in it is pretty basic, some booths and tables, nothing fancy. I come here for the oxtail. There aren't many places around me to find oxtail, or maybe they are just all hiding from me. I get the small oxtail which comes with rice and peas, cabbage and a dumpling. Great flavor, and portion size. Meat is soft and falls off the bone. Only con for me is i always end up with a lot of smaller oxtails I love having a couple large meaty ones you can suck on. Home style Jamaican and it's damn good. This little "dive" consists of a few tables, a wall of spices and sauces, and the kitchen window where you place your order. They also have Jamaican patties in a hot display, and some baked dessert (not sure). I would recommend the jerk seasoning (JCS Boston Jerk seasoning) if you want to do your own jerk chicken/wings/pork/fish. Most people take their food to go. I had the jerk pork (Tuesday special) and split the meat with some curry goat because I've never had it. The pork was awesome, tender, and well seasoned - a fair amount of fat, but also plenty of meat. The goat was good too - the fat around the bone melts in your mouth (a fattier meat). The jerk had just enough kick and if you want more the hot sauce on the table will do the trick. Just a bit of the hot sauce had me blowing my nose - that's how you know it's good. I had a change to try the large Jerk Chicken plate (about 10 bucks) it came with amazing rice, slaw, and a few small rolls. Wow all I can say is I have never had better chicken anywhere. Once in Jamaica I paid a cab driver to take me to all the best places for jerk chicken on the island, I commissioned him for the day and we had some amazing food and saw party of the island that few other tourists see.... that was good, this place is better! I must give an honest opinion here, it was ok. I was starving and wanted soothing hearty to hit my stomach. The people were nice, and apparently I had missed the lunch crowd. I ordered the oxtails, rice and peas, and vegetables. I guess, I've gotten used to a certain type of flavor and this one was just a little bit different. It wasn't bad, it was just a little different. The best way for me to explain it is there's Papa Johns Pizza vs. Pizza Hut. Both are good, just different sauce... 50 lashes with a wet noodle... I forgot to check in while I was here today!!! After stopping by the little "Farmer's Market" up the street, we decided to see what was close by for lunch spots. Island Sizzle was right around the corner and they were already bookmarked so off we went. When we arrived, I snapped off a picture of the front. You walk in and you find yourself in a no frills mom and pop spot. The first thing I noticed was the wonderful smell of island cooking. My wife ordered the lunch size Jerk Chicken with Plantains as her side. I ordered a small size Curry Goat with Oxtail and it comes with Cabbage, Rice, Plantain and Dumpling. Red Stripe for my wife and Ginger Beer for me. I saw the patties and also ordered a Hot Beef Patty. Hot Beef Patty - 4 - Could have had a bit more Scotch Bonnet in it but the flavor was good and the crust was exceptional. Jerk Chicken - 5 - Great flavor and and still juicy. Curry Goat - 4 - Tender and a good curry flavor. I prefer a bit more scotch bonnet but then most people would complain it is too hot if they are not used to Caribbean cooking. Oxtail - 4 - Great flavor and were very tender BUT I prefer the larger pieces of Oxtail over the smaller ones when I have Oxtail. Rice n Beans - 4 - Nicely cooked but could have used a wee bit more thyme in my opinion. Cabbage - 5 - Good flavor and not mushy. Plantain - 5 - Caramelized to perfection. Dumpling - 5 - Tastes just like my Son-in-law's mother's dumpling. Service - 5 - I am used to waking for a LONG time in MOST Jamaican restaurants but this place is on the ball. The owner's son was all by himself and had our order ready in under 5 minutes. Atmosphere - 3 - The place was a wee bit bare but to be fair, MOST people get Jamaican food to go. That seems to be common in MOST Jamaican spots so I would not expect a fancy dining area anyway. That would be out of character. Overall I would have to say that this was the closest to what I get when I am visiting my son-in-law's family in South Florida with a bit less kick. I love Jamaican food and as soon as I found them I dropped by for lunch. Now I have my office colleagues joining me because they have found it to be the best home cooked island food around. Their prices are really reasonable for the amount of food you get. I usually order the medium Jerk chicken and it comes with cabbage, rice and peas, sweet bread and a plantain for around 7 bucks. The jerk spice has lots of kick and the chicken just falls off the bone. They also have a wonderful bottled scotch bonnet sauce when you want to add a slight flame to the dish! For $10 we had a pretty big serving. It came with rice and peas, cabbage, ripe plantain, and a fried dumpling. We also shared a spicy Jamaican beef patty, which was AMAZING. The crust is nice and flaky while the filling is a little creamy, flavorful, and a little spicy. For those who aren't fond of spicy (like me--I don't really like spicy), the spicy Jamaican patty isn't overwhelmingly spicy. I encourage you to give it a try!!! I came here again last week and tried the oxtail with gravy, rice and peas, cabbage ripe plantain, and a fried dumpling. MMMMM. Oxtail stew is pretty much one of my favorite Caribbean dishes and I have to say, the sweet lady who cooks in the back knows what she is doing! It's not overly sweet or rich like it is at Golden Krust. There's a tiny bit of sweetness but it's just the right amount. Oh and the meat is so tender and fatty! A small store in a nice area and I was greeted by friendly faces as I walked in. The kids ordered a spicy chicken and beef pattie and I've never seen them eat something so quickly, I ordered the large jerk chicken meal and it was absolutely beautiful. Both came with rice and beans, cooked cabbage, a dumpling (kind of a donut meets biscuit meets hush puppy) and a fried plantain--each component was enjoyable and complemented the chicken well. I can't say that I've had much "island" food, so I can't speak to the authenticity--but eating here made me want to try more. On a whim I stopped in here while having some drinks across the street at the Hourglass Brewery. This is small but clean family owned business. I ordered the vegetarian platter. It came with rice and beans, a cabbage dish, a collard greens type dish, a sweet roll, and a plantain. Everything tasted very good. It had just enough spice that it wasn't overpowering or spicy, but it wasn't bland either. The prices are also very good. I had a meal that could of easily fed 2. It was about $7.00. I first had food from here from a going a away party my boss threw for me. The food was delicious. Since then I go here for my fix of Jamaican food. However like typical Jamaican restaurants, food availability depends on the time of day. They close earlier than most places. The oxtail and jerk chicken platters are delicious. The pork and goat left me with a lot to be desired (IMO). The beef patties are good but the cocoa bread is not house made (that's one thing I miss about NY Jamaican restaurants).
