Fun spot we tried as our last stop on a mini pedestrian brew tour of DTLB. Music was a little elevator for us, but something to chat about. Ample dog-friendly, covered outdoor seating. Great spot to stop on a walk. Large selection that includes brews and some wines. We did a flight ranging across pilsners, sours and dark draughts. All were enjoyable. No "Service" charges, thank you! There are multiple vegetarian options; we both went for the Fungus Amongus, Jerk cremini mushrooms on a fresh french roll. We were expecting a veggie pattie, what we received was exactly what the menu said we would...roasted jerk mushroom caps. And we were both happy with the taste which had a definite bite, very flavorful. Would definitely order again. The fries were pale and flaccid, not the crisp and firm product which marks a well cooked fry. It is a brewery, serving both their own craft beers and a mix of wines, craft beers, and ciders from their 'friends'. I have definitely shifted from the hoppy IPA's to a maltier taste; their red was perfect. Partner had a blond ale, also perfect. You order both beverage and food from the bar counter, beers are provided immediately. Collect your napkins, utensils, and water and enjoy your beer on the heated/covered patio or inside. On the patio you are likely to be entertained by numerous dogs, both walking by or sitting with their companions. Would return happily. read more

The brews were decent but nothing I would return for. The food was good. The atmosphere is what you would probably expect of a brewery with food. Everything is counter service, so the wait can get quite long when there are a lot of people waiting and trying to make decisions. I recommend paying as you go so you don't risk having to wait a half an hour close your tab if the line is long. read more

I've been waiting for something to take over Beachwood that wasn't Beachwood, so ISM was quite exciting to see open up. My SO and I walked over on a random Monday and were happy to hear trivia being held. For those interested, it is the same night as the Dubliner, but it seems less busy for now. The drink menu through the QR code doesn't explain what the beers are completely, so you may be taking a shot in the dark. You may need to go inside or go to their website (hopefully they fix this over time I know they're new). Beer wise, they have a vast selection. They overcharge for glasses: A "taster" aka what you ask to try at a bar to get a feel for a beer before committing is $4. A "full pour" aka a pint is $9. Just go to the website, read the notes of a beer, and get a pint at that rate. Ps, oz are NOT noted on any menus. Food wise, they're all over the place. They pack a punch flavor wise, and almost hold up to their neighbor the ordinarie. They definitely know how to season, but things can really be confusing. How so? The craft not kraft tri tip mac and cheese that has a BBQ sauce has an odd kerosene ish acrid flavor to it that I cannot put my finger on. Is it spoiled? The manager working when asked what the ingredient was just commented it was peppers. I cook, that's not peppers. The salad I had that had blackened shrimp on it clashed, and the dressing would do better with something else. Service wise, Grant was awesome. He was incredibly attentive knew his beers, and was personable. I plan on returning at some point to try something else. read more

My friends and I wanted to come try out a new place to eat for lunch. ISM was one of the hot and new place recommendations to try. ISM has a great location where they can validate your parking, and there is so much room to come with a group where you can eat indoors or outdoors. There was one server who was working at the time, and he answered all of our questions and recommended some options on the menu. You should definitely come during lunch because their lunch specials includes a drink or a beer from the what's your ISM menu. My friends and I shared the nachos, pro tip #1 sandwich, and romaine calm salad. The dressing was so good, and it had a little kick at the end. My favorite was the sandwich! Located in downtown Long Beach on the Promenade, ISM Brewing continues the great tradition of serving locally brewed beer in a great setting, taking advantage of the year round good weather. It is located where the Beachwood flagship brewpub location used to be, opening in 2023. It is owned by one of the original brewers at the downtown Beachwood location, and is a separate entity. We had a chance to stop by for lunch on a Thursday afternoon, and the food was a lot better than I expected. ISM seems to specialize (and win awards) for their hoppy beers, but lately the Mrs and I have been just trying beers that are easy to drink, especially with food. So we were happy to see that ISM had a couple of house beers that fit the bill: a wheat beer and a belgian style session. Once you enter, you are directed by signage to seat yourself and order from the bartender. There are laminated menus, so we spent a little time perusing them. During weekday lunchtime, ISM offers a 'Local Lunch' taking some of their more popular plates and pairing it with any house beer for $15 - $20. So we went with that, and paid for it after ordering. The bartender poured us the drafts immediately. Found some seating outside, and the food got delivered to our table about 15 minutes later. It ended up being a good deal and worth the wait. Chicken Wangz & Hand Cut fries ($20) - chose the ISM Material Witness (Witbier) which was good, very easy to drink. It came with 7 Giant wings (flats and drums), and had been expertly spun to coat every nook/cranny. It had been marinated, and then spun with buffalo sauce (they call it Tantaka which I've not heard before...sounds like they use Tantaka brand hot sauce?). Very good...very filling. Reading the menu, these wings are $1 for Wing it Wednesday (probably the best deal in town for wings). It comes with hand cut fries...reminds me of kennebec fries. Very generous with them, and just perfect for potato lovers. Crustacean Rhapsody & Handcut Fries ($20) - chose their Plough & Harrow (Saison), which I enjoyed...crisp and crushable. The sandwich was their version of a shrimp po'boy, I wasn't expecting much...just some deep fried shrimp (even popcorn size) with a lot of mayo on a bun. Should have read the description a lot more closely...this was a great sandwich. It used jumbo sized shrimp, battered and fried and tossed in hot sauce...for a minute I thought I was looking at chicken nuggets, but that thought went away after the first bite. The ciabatta bread was excellent, crunch, crispy and provided needed heft to the sandwich...makes me wonder why I don't order sandwiches on ciabatta more often. And the dressing complemented the sandwich really well. It was so good that I saved half of it to eat later, once I reached that level of fullness where I wouldn't enjoy it as much as I did the first bite. The fries went great with this sandwich. Definitely a place to take out of towners who want to try elevated bar food and great local beer. read more

Great experience checking out ISM Brewing! I always appreciate good service, and all the staff members were really friendly and helpful. I love that you can get beer, wine, and food here. They have their own brews and guest brews. It seems like their cider is super popular; it was sold out during my visit, but countless people came by asking for it. I'd love to try it next time! They have different size options for pours, including Taster size so you can try different beers to find your favorite. You can even put together a flight of four. For food, I tried the pot roast sandwich, which was delicious! The food here is pretty good and holds up if you take it to go. Service is always super friendly and helpful with their suggestions of what they think you'll enjoy from their large selection of beer. The place itself is very cool, has a relaxed energy. Hope this stays in DTLB forever. read more

This is a review of their beers and taproom. We did not get a chance to try their food because we got there right after their kitchen closed :( This is the old Beachwood Brewing tap room space. Still feels very much like Beachwood, except with different beers. Same layout! Plus some weird and amusing pinatas hanging above the bar. You order at the bar and then find a seat. We came here on a Friday night and they had a live old school DJ. He was... fine... and loud. I'm glad that he was wrapping up his set just as we arrived because I don't think I would have been able to handle listening to him, we could hear him even on the patio. We had a bit of trouble getting the bartenders attention, but it turned out to be a good thing because we started chatting with someone else who worked there (maybe the brewmaster? judging from his knowledge of the beers there). He made some great recommendations. I think that they really specialize in IPAs, as there are quite a few IPAs available. And their IPAs are DELICIOUS! Their double hazy is one of my favorites. Very drinkable, the right amount of haze without being milky. Western Standard Time is also a very drinkable Westcoast IPA! Low-key spot for some beers, but I only wish that their kitchen opened a bit later (and they didn't have the old school DJ). read more

I came here on a Saturday evening. The place is a "seat yourself and order at the register" kind of place. They had indoor and outdoor seating with some fire pit style tables, but they didn't seem to be lit. They were out of tri-tip which sucked because I really wanted to try the tri-tip Mac and cheese. We ended up ordering nachos which were descent but nothing special. They use refried black beans, which I don't necessary like . We ordered their Juicy Lucy Burger which looked so good in picture and they forgot to put CHEESE which is the main ingredient besides the meat. I didn't realize it until a couple of bites in. I was really disappointed because I was honestly starving when I showed up. The worst part is that the damn burger is $20. $20 for a cheeseburger with no cheese. Been here a few times now and I really enjoy the atmosphere. You can choose to sit inside or outside. They have am abundant selection of beers, a lot of ipas which I'm a fan of. I came in during an event that was going on. Yes I understand there's lots of people, but there were four bartenders at the bar. When I sat down. After opening the menu, knowing what I wanted, putting in the menu down, I got no attention from any of the bartenders. One gentleman did ask what I wanted finally and I asked for the stout. He said they were sold out and I asked what the next best thing was. He pointed to one item and I said I would like to try that and then he walked away. He came back several minutes later and asked what I wanted and I said I told you earlier that I would like to try this one. He rolled his eyes at me and shook his head and he said he was extremely busy and I get it. It's an event, but there were four bartenders and nobody ordering at the bar. They had some tv's playing the baseball game as well as music playing. There's parking across the street in the building which is free for the first two hours. They have a carnage of beers from seltzer to stouts. Beer was delicious. The shrimp taco had three shrimps and could have used some mango sauce or pico de gallo for a better taste. The cochinito taco would be better with double tortilla since the sauce makes it soggy and it falls apart. They weren't spicy at all so a hot sauce option would be great. They are pretty big and cost about 7 bucks each. Bull total for two drinks and two tacos with tip was about 35 bucks. They have bar seating and outdoor seating. I've waited a while to review this place to see how they settled in. There have already been ups and downs with the food and beer. But, the beer is rotated with good frequency and they always have a couple delicious brews. The food menu has been changing a lot. But, the wing Wednesday is awesome! $1 wings and they are very big and meaty. I ordered 15 last time for my wife and I and we could barely finish them. What a bargain. Good ambience with the patio, or sit at the bar and catch a game on the tv's. Stopped by on St. Paddy's Day with friends after coming from a pub because we wanted to keep the celebration going. I love coffee beer, so naturally, I went for the "Calf Fiend" on nitro, a Brown Ale with Peruvian coffee beans at 5.7 ABV. This ale on nitro had a nice body with creamy texture, and the infused coffee provided a nice harmonious finish. It also had almost line a hazelnut and vanilla smell, but you can still taste the hops. I didn't get to explore anything else, but the place looks just as great as it did when Beachwood occupied the space. And, the servers were all enthusiastic about taking your order and talking about their menu. read more

I've been to this location twice and each time I've loved my beer. The location is good. Street parking is not bad, and they validate for the lot across the street. The taproom has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. They have a good selection of beer. Flights are a little more expensive than I would like. So I get the half pints. The beer is really good, I've gotten their brown ale and the other two beers I had were collabs with two different Colorado breweries. Both of those collabs were beer types that I don't usually go for but both were superb. This place just flat out knows how to make good beer. This afternoon I stopped by ISM Brewing to grab a few loose cans. Since there were no visible prices anywhere, I picked out 3 variant IPA cans and brought them to the counter. The music was blasting so I couldn't even hear what the cashier told me, but I paid and left. Here's the kick in the teeth: those 3 loose cans ended up costing me $10 more than a 4-pack of the exact same beer. They're basically charging in-house pour prices for to-go cans except without giving you the bar service that would justify it. That is beyond unreasonable and feels like a straight-up rip-off. For what I paid here, I could have easily picked up a mixed pack at Beachwood or Long Beach Beer Lab for way less and with way better transparency. This kind of shady pricing makes it clear they don't value their customers. Never again. read more

My last review of 2023 will be given to this awesome new Downtown Long Beach Brewery and what a great way to end another year of yelping. So glad Ism (pronounced Is-sem not I.S.M) is now a part of the Long Beach food/drink scene. Located where Beachwood once stood, I am already a fan boy after just one visit. I stopped by yesterday but already had a large meal, so I just had a couple beers. I went with the Peaches for Days and Kiwi Fingers. Both were good but definitely a bigger fan of the latter. The former didn't taste anything like peach but I finished it, so I liked it enough. The food other patrons looked amazing so I decided I was going to go back when I was hungry... and that's exactly what I did.... The following today. So I returned today and ordered the Braised Beef Dip... so good! Meat was tender and melts in your mouth. I also tasted the Salmon Melt, I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. My bf described the pairing as a take on salmon croquet, something similar he would regularly eat while living in the south. The fries served with both were some of the best fries I've ever had. We ordered a flight of beers. In order of favorite to least favorite, I went with Valve Float, Interloper, Kiwi Fingers, and Beat the Cycle. Food and beer were so good! Service here is great. You can either order at the bar or scan a QR code from your table. The owner's family was there today and they were awesome and welcoming. Chatted with them for a long while. The patio is dog friendly and a super chill vibe. Inside is decorated super well and has one of the coolest neon signs I've ever seen. Amazingly, I'm actually writing one review in a relatively timely fashion! I was actually at their initial soft open, but I didn't want to write a review about something that was still in initial soft-open - at that time, they only had a few beers, after all. They are clearly still growing that list, but it's already a lot bigger and more varied in style. More importantly, though, I can say: if you happen to have any weekday afternoons off from work, they just unveiled a weekday lunch special, that is an extremely good deal - roughly speaking, buy an entree, get a free pint (weekdays during lunch). So for that reason alone, this is likely to be a mainstay in my Friday lunch rotation. Vibe-wise, nothing much has changed from when Beachwood was here - other than, sadly, the removal of all the pinball machines. They still have a bunch of tables both inside and outside, and they still have the great, long bar area I've enjoyed sitting at for years. Beer-wise, at least for right now, the list is much smaller than Beachwood's was, but obviously, they did just open recently. They do offer taster-sized glasses of everything, priced individually (I hate when breweries don't let you do that!), so I was able to try everything I wanted to. I won't comment on all the individual beer, as I'm not sure how much or how quickly they're planning on rotating them, but they are making consistently good beer right out of the gate (other than I personally thought their first stout was way too bitter, and the "peach" blonde, while decent, didn't taste much like peaches - absolutely a *huge* fan of their new coffee brown ale, though). I do also like that they have a rotating guest cider, too - and that you can get tasters of the guest offerings, including the cider (I've been to breweries that don't have taster prices for their guest offerings, which is also rather silly.) As far as food - at the soft open, I tried their "brisket mac & cheese", which I would *not* really recommend. It looks really pretty, and its listed status as an "appetizer" is highly misleading (it's only an entree in that it doesn't come with a side - but it doesn't need one. It's quite large.) Not very flavorful, though, with a cheese sauce that didn't taste particularly cheesy, and, at least assuming the meat is still the same as at the soft open, brisket that felt like it came from a package. It wasn't bad - I'd eat it if someone handed it to me, but I wouldn't order it again. At least assuming they haven't already since the soft open - the brisket mac could use a bit of work (meatier, less chewy brisket, and ideally, some real cheese.) I figured I needed to give them another chance, though, so I was back for the new lunch special last Friday, tried the salmon sandwich, which I *solidly* recommend. It's basically a patty melt but with chunk salmon instead of a burger. Quite tasty, quite *filling*, super cheesy and salmon-y, and comes with just *perfect* fries (as far as basic unadulterated fries, I think the fries here might be my current favorite in the city.) They also have a really quality house-made hot sauce (on request) that went perfectly with both the sandwich and the fries. So I would say, the beer and, at least *that* sandwich, are totally worth their price - and a steal during lunch on weekdays. Happy the number of new breweries in Long Beach keeps going p, and I look forward to seeing what they'll do with the space in the future! Welcome to the neighborhood! read more

I have so much fun at Isom! We went there on a Monday night for trivia and we had a blast! I got there around 6 PM and there were plenty of tables inside and outside, but it definitely quickly filled up once trivia started. Place is super cute with a fun vibe. It was a little hard to find. I didn't realize it was down the alleyway on the promenade. My directions took me to the hotdog place on the street. I had to walk around the corner to find it but it's not super hidden. There is also an easy parking lot right across the street and I only paid eight dollars for three hours which was great. I love that they have nonalcoholic options. I had the beer and it tasted so good!! The bartender was super attentive and I never had to wait long to get a drink. The bathrooms were super clean as well as the rest of the place. Next time I'd like to sit outside and try their food.! Definitely a fun place for a Monday night trivia. read more

A small group of us coworkers have eaten lunch here twice. We ordered the Flew the Coop, Pro Tip #1, Swimming Upstream. We all were very happy, the flavors were amazing. Can't forget lunch beers ;) a great collection of IPAs that you can't go wrong with! Two of us had come in to grab a sandwich on a Tuesday, we needed catering for a work lunch and last minute asked if it's something they can do... they happily and quickly assisted us with our needs to feed 16+ people the following day.
