I grabbed one of their burgers and also tried the bolio hot dog sandwich -- both were next level.

I placed an online order through their website, and it quoted about a 25-minute prep time with a ready window around 2:56 -3:06 PM. I planned accordingly and even arrived earlier so I could pick it up fresh and avoid waiting. However, just five minutes after placing the order, I received a text saying it was already ready. That immediately raised a red flag, because if you're paying $13+ for a double burger, you expect it to be made closer to your arrival time, not immediately. When I arrived, the burger was already cold. When I brought this up, the employee I spoke with repeatedly said "it's not my fault" and pointed to someone else, instead of taking any ownership or even acknowledging the issue. It was a really poor way to handle a simple customer concern. Eventually, after some back and forth, the burger was remade, but I had to wait another 10-15 minutes. And ironically, it took longer to make it this time than it did after I placed the online order. But then now I wa stuck waiting defeating the whole purpose of ordering ahead. A manager eventually came over and was polite, but by that point the experience had already been frustrating. They also threw away the original burger instead of offering to let me keep it, which felt wasteful. On top of that, when I asked for a couple cups of water for my daughter, I was told I'd need to purchase a bottle, which felt pretty tone-deaf given the situation and didn't even think to offer me any anything for the misunderstanding and having to wait extra time now... The bigger issue here is the lack of coordination and communication. If you're going to quote customers a pickup time, especially for hot food, the order should be made accordingly--not immediately after it's placed. Otherwise, you're guaranteeing that the food won't be fresh when the customer arrives. Between the timing issue, the lack of ownership from staff, and the overall handling of the situation, this was a disappointing experience. I usually like the food, but the service and process today really need improvement.

The Last Bastion of No-Nonsense Grit: Bill's Burgers isn't here to hold your hand. It's a visceral, smoke-scented institution serving pure sensory overload on a paper plate, parked on a sun-baked stretch of Van Nuys asphalt. It was Lord Anthony Bourdains favorite place. he just never said it was because he didnt want hipsters to flood it so whenever he was asked to do a segment of his favorite burger place he said fine and did In and Out. The first time you stand outside this shack, your coddled, over-sanitized sensibilities might panic. It looks stripped-down, raw, and unbothered by modern trends. Good. We've been conditioned by corporate fast-food labs to accept heavily preserved, unseasoned mediocrity. If your digestive tract objects after eating here, it's not an ailment--it's a physical exorcism. The Code of the Counter: The legendary Bill may have moved on to the great flat-top in the sky, but his uncompromising, badass legacy lives on through Doug and Hiroko. When we got there, there were only a few tables with guests in the whole restaurant, likely because we got there at 8pm and they close at 9pm. But we stood at the front for a few minutes before anyone greeted us, and when we finally were "greeted", a man just came up to us and looked at us with confusion and didn't say anything, just raised his eyebrows. I said, "Hi! We have 5 adults. May we sit outside please?" He said sure and guided us outside to our table with not much said. We waited quite a while before a server came over to us, and it ended up being the same guy that brought us to the table originally. He came over to us and said, "Drinks?" It was sort of awkward how unwelcome we felt. That was pretty much our entire experience with the server: very slow service, and very few words. Once we put our food order in, we grabbed the Uno deck at a neighboring table to play until the food came out. That was actually really fun! But we waited for the food for so long - playing multiple games of Uno with 5 people and still not having our food. It was painful - especially since it seemed there was not much going on around us. Our hope was the food would be a saving grace here to our first time experience at this restaurant, but unfortunately it was not. My father-in-law liked his salmon dish, and my husband said the steak melt was decent, rating it at a 6.5-7/10. My mother-in-law said she liked her French dip, but barely touched it. My sister-in-law's short ribs had way too much sauce on it and too much salt, so she could not finish hers either because of that. My truffle burger was overwhelmed by blue cheese to the point where you could not taste anything else, so I also could not finish mine because of that. In the end, we all spoke about it and the highlight for our family was that they had Uno available for tables to play. But unfortunately we all agreed we would never be back.

There's music that's lively without being overbearing, and the staff is uniformly friendly. But... You have to order at the bar and, though they have runners to bring your food, you do have to hunt them down for anything after the delivery (extra ketchup, etc). While this isn't my favorite system at my age, to be fair, whatever the owners are saving on staff is reflected in the prices, which are absolutely below most places in the area for food that is good-quality and drinks that are generously poured. So yes, my wife's Espresso Martini was served in a deep-bellied Belgium beer glass, and my whiskey neat was a hefty pour. Yay!! For food, I ordered the Smash Burger, which is served with melted American, grilled onions and the house version of Russian dressing (as well as pickles, which I deleted). The burgers had a nice, smashed crust while remaining juicy, the cheese was properly melted, and the grilled onions had a terrific caramelized sweetness, while the house sauce was very well-balanced: ketchupy and creamy without being too mayonnaise-heavy. A very good smasher. My wife ordered the Big Texan Burger because she wanted cheddar and frizzled onions and BBQ sauce, though she deleted the bacon and pork belly that are normally included. This, too, was a very good burger: cooked to a proper and pleasing medium-rare and well-seasoned, with a good, fresh flavor to the beef. The onion rings were less successful, which are of the beer batter type, but seemed to be a commercial, frozen product. The coating was browned but not crisp, and the flavor was relatively nondescript. We didn't really eat them, and wouldn't order them again. And so, to me, The Tipsy Cow is a bit of a mixed bag: reasonably priced decent food and reasonably priced, generously-poured drinks -- but in a mostly self-serve environment that incrementally loses its appeal in relation to your age and your dining circumstances. Certainly worth a try, but you've gotta be in the right mood.

So far I've had the patty melt, the avocado cheeseburger, and the double bacon cheeseburger, and every single one has hit. First off, the bacon deserves its own mention. Whatever bacon they're using is clearly top-tier quality. Thick, flavorful, cooked right, and definitely not an afterthought. No flimsy strips or skimping here. The burgers are big. Like, legitimately big. These aren't sad, flattened patties. They're hearty, filling, and actually justify the price. They also don't hold back on the cheese, which I appreciate. Everything tastes fresh, well-balanced, and made with care. What really surprised me, especially with inflation being what it is right now, is the value. Their combos are around $16-$17, and for that you get a large burger, a solid portion of fries, and a drink. And it's a fountain drink, not a can, which matters. You're not leaving hungry, and you don't feel like you overpaid. The fries are good, the specials are very reasonable for the quality, and they also have other drink options if you're not in the mood for soda. The vibe is another big plus. You can sit inside or outside, the atmosphere is relaxed, and the people working there are genuinely nice. It really feels like a family-owned spot where customer service still matters. You're treated like a person, not just an order number. For anyone in the neighborhood looking for a good burger, good people, and a comfortable place to sit down and eat, this place is absolutely worth checking out. Oh, and yes, they do have restrooms, which always matters more than people admit. Overall, this is one of those places that gets the fundamentals right: quality food, fair pricing, and good service. I'll definitely keep coming back.
