It's "Chili in Hawaii" today is saying the least! While we are experiencing horrible weather in Hawaii, we are so fortunate to have "Chili in Hawaii". If you've been following my yelp you will know I have been having a chili craving in this colder Hawaii weather. Not just any Chili. A good ole Southwestern chili. Up pops CIH in Yelp! I've seen them at product shows and popups for years but never had the chance to taste... until now. Called the number listed on Yelp. Found out besides doing popups, they also do mobile orders... focusing on a different part of the island on different days. Wednesday was town day; yayy! Rounded up an order for a few fun friends and ordered, in one pound containers: Butter Chicken, Chickpea and potato curry, Lamb curry, Chicken curry, Enchilada casserole, and (of course), Beef chili! Friends so thoroughly happy with their order! So far I have enjoyed the butter chicken and, of course the chili. Hahah. Looking forward to the chickpea curry this rainy day. Would I order it again ? Butter chicken with every order..! Love also that their chili tastes less salty than major competitor, allowing the tastes of the spices to resonate better. Plan to go through their menu... a few selections each time. This place ( Located in Ohana Hale hang a right as you come in) is pretty cool with its Niche marketing of different hot sauces and hot pepper merchandise. They also now have hot foods such as nachos ..tostadas...smothered burritos...chili dogs...portugese bean soup ..tacos .homemade chilis..etc....all priced mostly from $6 to $10 and they even have vegan options as well. (pic) I seen they had nachos..(it was ok) .I love nachos so had tunnel vision before I seen their other menu options other wise I would have tried their smothered burrito... Anyways the Lady and guy running it seemed pretty cool. If you are looking for homemade mexican type fare this place is worth a visit. read more

Despite being in the center of the pacific, my exposure to pacific islander food is pitifully low, and I don't think I ate at a single pacific island restaurant during AAPI heritage month (is Yelp the place for representation politics discourse?). I've passed by this hot sauce place a few times in Ohana Hale Marketplace. Half of the storefront is an assortment of hot sauces, and the other half is a takeout place. They have a pretty diverse array of dishes, including stews, chili, enchiladas, and nachos, but I saw that Fijian curry was on the menu too. Today there was beef and lamb. I've heard a little bit about the Indians who immigrated to places like Fiji, South Africa, and Mauritius during the 19th century, a history with many parallels to asian communities in Hawaii. In Fiji, there was a lot of mixture with the local fijians and, from what I've been told, Fiji, like Hawaii, has a very mixed local culture. I got the smaller size of the Fijian goat curry which was ready in a matter of minutes. It tasted very fresh, with a bit of a gamey taste from the lamb which balanced well with the slight spice. The goat was soft, like what you would find in a Japanese beef curry, and the taste reminded me a bit of the thinner Japanese beef curries my Grandma makes. The onion and cucumber on the top were nice touches that I might start doing when I have curry at home. I found myself wanting more spice when I was eating the curry, maybe the rice ratio was off or it's a way to coax you to buy hot sauce. Either way, tasty and i'm glad I got a taste of Fijian cuisine. read more

#13 review for 2019. Flavor: The homemade chili with chips tasting was the perfect thing to try their many hot sauces on. Ambiance: There were cute chili shaped lights that were strung in the booth and walls decorated with street signs like "severe addition ahead", "flammable", "fire hazard", and "chili at work" that added a sense of humor to the decor. Value: As it was a free Y event, I can't provide an opinion on the value of the tasting. The chili rice/nacho is $6. So sad that Ohana Hale Marketplace is closing! This gem of a shop not only sells spicy goods galore, but also takeout food. I usually stop by for pepper jelly but left with a few other goodies since the Marketplace is closing. Tried the butter chicken and utilized the combo deal to pick up a kiawe smoke and a reaper hot sauce. Every interaction with the owner and her family has been pleasant which makes me a happy repeat customer. Looking forward to follow this business on social media to see what they do next. read more

Hmmmmm cute tiny venue. Ohana marketplace on ward! Interesting storefront. Tons of little items and hot sauces! Menu with Indian and Mexican food. I was getting confused what to order! They recommended the butter chicken. I've been on a Indian food thing... so I relented easily! Asked if I wanted cilantro and a cucumber condiment. I definitely recommend. I got a mini, came with rice, chicken and topping. Honestly reminded me of the lightest yellow curry chicken I've ever had. Barely spiced. I liked the cucumber though because the bites of it gave a light citrus clean taste to the curry. Personally I needed more heat. But it was good and the service was great. For a place with chili in the title, they failed. I loved all their vegan options, so I asked for a vegan bowl. The guy asked if I wanted it spicy and I said yes and he kind of wanted me it would be hot. He also asked if I wanted cheese which I found odd. When I took my first bite I was so disappointed that not only was it not spicy, it had like no flavor at all. I went back to get hot sauce and after putting it on the food, it basically still just tasted like nothing with hot sauce. read more

Just wow, you can literally find just about anything here. I'm from an area of the US known for its unique Chili (New Mexico) and it's cuisine. Do they have it? I've been here a few times and now decided to do a review. Whenever I crave a bit of Mexican taco or burrito, I'd stop by and was never disappointed. Always very tasty and very affordable, and owner, Bev is warm and charming. Besides food, she was other Mexian packaged seasonings and interesting items items for sale. I once bought a cute dangling red chilipepper earrings, and get complimented whenever I wear them, Glad to see she has continued staying in business during both shut-downs during the pandemic and so glad to help in my small way to keep her going. read more

I made a special trip out to the Swap Meet to find It's Chili in Hawaii. The spot locations indicated here on yelp were dead on and took me to the correct tent. There were perhaps 10-12 different hot sauces to choose from, and he did indicate that different sauces are rotated in with future shipments, so check back another time and you hopefully have some new choices. Price wise, it is ok... Buy a few bottles and get a little bit off, but you will definitely get better deals online- bottles that sell for $20 here are ~7-9 online. Buying from Its Chili in Hawaii has a few perks for the extra $ though, you can sample the different sauces before choosing your purchase(s), and the man is knowledgeable to entertain your hot sauce questions. All in all, I would go back to see what new sauces arrive, sample and pick up a bottle or two again. I picked up two bottles today for $35, which seemed OK for the 'i want it now' mentality with the above mentioned perks, but to the haggler/deal maker, considering what you can get them for online you could probably wiggle some discount... Why hasn't anyone written a review for this place? This place is awesome! On Saturdays they have fresh tortillas they sell and often tasty home cooked samples. I think it's family owned and they are always super friendly. I love cooking so this is where I get authentic frozen green chilies (mild to hot) for cooking breakfast burritos, quesadillas etc... They also sell hot sauces and a variety of frozen tamales. Extra star for ample parking. read more

FINALLY! I've been in Hawaii almost a year, and miss my hot sauce. Just stumbled upon Chili In Hawaii's booth at the Aloha Stadium swap meet. Festivals on the mainland have lots of great hot sauces to sample, but these guys are the real deal here in Hawaii. Met both of the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Chili, and they are both super nice and knowledgeable about their sauces and peppers. Very nice selection with some common ones (Daves Insanity) as well as some that they make with their own labels. They have a deal going, 3 bottles for $20, so I picked up 3. Some Jerk Sauce, a 'Guava Lava' and a Habanero Garlic. All excellent and 2 of the 3 made by their company. Nice thick chunky sauces, not thin and vinegary like the stuff you get in the grocery stores. If you're a hot sauce guy or gal, these guys are your Hawaii hook-up. The real deal. Although I haven't tried the prepared foods (yet) I keep coming back for the pepper jelly. It's the best I've had and the price is very reasonable. I just saw a similar but not as good product at the swap meet but it cost more than twice as much. So as long as they keep making it my friends and I will keep buying it. But I can't wait to try the Chile rellenos when they come in. I just heard about them today. read more

THIS IS FREAKING HOT SAUCE HEAVEN! omg thanks yelpers for yelping this place because I love all things hot and spicy and this place as as a lot of sauces to choose from. The workers here are really cool and very helpful in letting me sample some of their hottest sauces and boy did it pack a punch. The prices are decent, ranging from $5-$20 a bottle but the more expensive ones are the best, I got to try one of the hottest sauce that was made with the hottest indian peppers and boy was it good but at $18 a bottle i'll pass although i really wanted it. I could never find the perfect hot sauce but after wandering around for a bit at the Ohana Hale marketplace at Ward just to kill time before my car appointment, I think I may have found it here. On our way out, walking past this little shop the words "ghostpepper" caught the corner of my eye. I immediately stopped and reversed into the shop to check out their stuff. I was pretty stoked with their selection of pepper sauces. Over the last week, I bought new bottles of tobasco and cholula sauces just cause I was out (yup this girl needs heat in all my food). I asked the shop owner about the ghost pepper sauce and she let me know that the scorpion pepper was hotter on the scoville. My husband told her about my experience eating a scorpion pepper straight off the plant so I tried a sampling of the scorpion sauce...it was GOOD. Unfortunately, I didnt end up buying it because of the sauces I already had at home. I did leave however with some XXX hot gummy chiles (for my love of gummy candy and heat of course which I inhaled walking out of the market...loved it) and GHOST NUTS (although I didnt try it yet, I love the hilarious label). I'll be eating them ghost nuts later and I'll be back when I'm done with the many hot sauces I have at home. 5-stars for great service experience. read more

I'm missing home. My aina. I love all things spicy. From raw peppers to complex sauces and everything in between. Hence, It's Chili In Hawaii. I first met owner Gary Toyama back in 1996. I believe the store was barely a year old when I first bought "hot sauce" from him. It was an event. Wall to wall sauces, custom dressings and sauces in the fridge, tasting anything and everything your tastebuds would allow. ... and everything was blessed with chili... A "chili pepper mecca". I next saw Gary Toyama again around '97 sometime. All I know is I stopped in happy and eager to buy sauce.... Mr. Toyama was lamenting his business partner and friend Ken Martinez's untimely death. With tears in his eyes and a quiet voice he told me of how it was their dream to open this store, and how he didn't know if he could keep it open on his own. I don't remember much, but I remember telling him that if it was what he really wanted to do, he should try and keep it around, if anything for the honor of his friend. I'm not saying I had anything to do with Mr Toyama keeping this store open. I'm not sure if he even remembers this day around a decade ago. All I know is this store is a spicy food lovers paradise. She also has a unique selection of sauces, mixes and other spicy things to liven up your cooking.
