I have never been to a bed and breakfast before. I mean I've slept in a bed and eaten breakfast so does that count? (No, Josh, no it doesn't...I answered my own question). But in the actual terms of these kinds of accommodations, The Henry Collins Inn is a truly choice spot and one my girlfriend and I were glad to call home back in July, even if it was for less than 24 hours. Located no more than a 10-20 minute walk away from just about everything in Newport is this quaint, little spot. Honestly, the distance wasn't entirely what had me choosing this place (though it was a portion of the deciding factor). What had me with Henry was the price. While all the other hotels around Newport were asking for hundreds of dollars for one night, The Henry Collins Inn was perfectly reasonable for a Thursday evening in the summer (under $200). When booking, there was only one room available (The Master Bedroom), but this boded quite well for my lady and I as this was a perfect space in size and location. I say location because only the master bedroom has its own entrance/exit giving you the opportunity to be a little antisocial if you'd like (we liked). There are several other rooms that we didn't get to see, including a few upstairs. Beyond the beds, THCI rocks a wonderfully quaint, almost victorian, feel (something you might associate with any b&b, or at least what I think of). When entering from the front door you'll find lots of cute decor and you can also spot the kitchen. Come breakfast time you'll be treated with a wonderful continental spread that shows time and detail in setting up. Plenty of fruit, nuts, grains, cereals, peanut and regular butter, cream cheese, bagels, english muffins, toast, coffee, juice, and (apparently upon request) pie (though we're not big on this sweet so we didn't test it out). You can then take your plate of goodies outside on their tiny patio to really enjoy the morning. Ownership is probably something that should be mentioned because you'll most likely be up close with them at least upon check in and most likely for your morning meal. We only had a few interactions with the mother and daughter of the establishment, but both were very kind. I had actually reached out to Henry Collins ahead of time about the desire to check in early (if possible) and quickly heard back that it would be something they would try to make happen. Though the room wasn't entirely ready when we arrived, the GF and I were still able to get our keys and drop our bags off (really all we wanted to do so we could head out into town). Overall, The Henry Collins Inn is a great place to stay when visiting Newport. The lady and I both agreed that we would definitely stay here again, especially if we can snag the master bedroom (gotta love that own entrance!). When we were ready to depart after our only evening, there was a typewriter near the living room area that guests use as a way to express their feelings about their stay (see the pic for what we quickly wrote). Maybe we'll find something like this in the future because thanks to The Henry Collins Inn, we'll look into more bed & breakfasts for our trips. read more

I'm finally back home and settled. And boy! I've been waiting to write this review. Located near the heart and middle of lovely Newport Rhode Island, The Henry Collins Inn is perfect placed within WALKING DISTANCE OF EVERYTHING. To get to the coastline, bars, food, literally 2-20 minute walk. Alexis, the host, was so generous and kind, and KNOWLEDGEABLE. She provided breakfast that was perfect to get the day started, also provided me with information about how to get around, what places to visit and the historical side of Newport as well! I stayed in the master bedroom and I'd say the price is definitely justified! I stayed solo, and the bed was a queen which could easily fit 2 or more people, with a couch as well for another guest if needed! The A/C worked well in the mid-heat of July Summer. I highly recommend booking here! I will be back here if I am ever to visit Newport Rhode Island again! read more

For my birthday, my husband took me to Newport in early June before the real season began in full force. It is funky and eclectic and they owner and staff are friendly and helpful. I liked the location. It is not in the fanciest neighborhood but walking distance from some great restaurants. The real selling point is that for every breakfast, they make a pie. The time we were there, they had two pies because they did not finish one pie from the morning before - winning in my hubby's book. Ask them about the history of the building, it is worth hearing all about it. Price was also very reasonable for resort area known for overpriced accommodations. read more

Recently my mom and I had a wedding to attend in Newport at Gurneys resort. We decided to stay at the Henry Collins Inn because it was close to everything and we had never stayed at a Bed and Breakfast. The rooms were clean and perfect for what we needed. The bed was so comfortable I didn't want to leave it lmao. The food was fabulous!!! They made us eggs right on the spot with fresh fruit and pie as well as bagels, rolls and coffee. My wife and I stayed here for a night back in November and we loved it. They were in the process of renovating the outside but I've driven by lately and it looks lovely. The Hostess and her daughter were the ones we met and they were so pleasant. If you have never had pie for breakfast, you need to stay here and have that experience. I read that on the website and I was thinking the same thing you are, "pie for breakfast"? It needs to be a part of your life. The room was clean and modern. The jacuzzi was wonderful. Priced very reasonably and is located in a nice spot between Thames Street and Broadway. We walked to the restaurants which are all right there. So many wicked high priced places around, this is warm and inviting and you'll feel like you're at home! read more

I stayed here over the Summer while attending the International Tennis Hall of Fame Tournament & induction. The inn has a perfect location, it was easy to walk to nearby restaurants and also just a short walk to get to the Hall of Fame and other areas downtown. The inn itself is very charming and the room was a great size. The owners are very friendly, kind and accommodating. When our train was due to arrive in later than expected, they happily arranged a late check in for us and also allowed us to keep our bags on site on our last day after we had checked out. The best part of our stay though had to be the lovely home cooked breakfast and PIE! We enjoyed having breakfast with the owners and other guests as well. I did a lot of research before our trip to Newport. I prefer a personal touch, so finding an affordable bed and breakfast was what I was after. Shopping online can be a minefield. Finding this inn was like finding the present you didn't know you needed under the Christmas tree. The Henry Collins inn is a little engine that could. It's affordable, super clean, cozy, the bed is comfortable, the AC and fridge quiet, the owners are very friendly and give you space, the breakfast offerings delicious, and the location amazingly convenient to food and activities. I am already looking into coming back next spring. The Henry Collins Inn is a must stay, because not only will you afford it, but you will enjoy remembering your time away. When we came home, my t-shirt smelled like our room! I highly recommend it, for those who value comfort, cleanliness, privacy, cost, and the intangibles that make a fantastic getaway. read more

We stayed in Room 4 in April, which was nice & quiet since it's not a busy time for tourists. The location is great, within walking distance to the shops & restaurants. There were other reviews about it being in a sketchy part of town, but that is an over exaggeration. The area is fine, rather representative of newport. The hostess is very friendly with pleasant conversations during breakfast. She was knowledgeable about the area. The rooms were tidy & clean as well. Would recommend! read more

This June while vacationing in Newport Rhode Island, I had the opportunity to spend 6 fantastic days at the Henry Collins Inn. The Henry Collins Inn is a 12 minute walk from downtown Newport and a 10 minute walk from the Visitors Center. Parking at the Inn saved the hourly and metered parking available downtown. After two days into my stay I was surprised to learn that the Newport Police Station was located new door because I never heard the sirens or noises you'd expect to hear at a police station. The information did give me greater peace of mind with regards to safety and security. My room was exceptionally clean, immaculate, quiet and had its own room temperature controls. Breakfast during the week included, fresh fruit and fruit salads, English and fresh muffins, coffee, yogurt and cereal; The weekend menu included eggs to order and bacon. Service from the staff was exemplary; they immediately responded and met all my special request. read more

This place is close by to a lot of stuff- so if you want to check out Newport on foot, I highly recommend this place. I stayed in the 'Beach room' and it was nice and cosy (there were complimentary water bottles provided in the room- something I find even bigger hotels tend to overlook). This is the only reasonably priced place to stay we found in Newport over the July 4 weekend, I can't imagine a hotel providing a better experience. We felt welcome as soon as arrived, the room/suite was perfect and breakfast was delicious. It's a small old building that blends right into the neighborhood, we felt like we were staying in the real town and not the manicured surroundings of the hotels. We had no issue with noise from the street or hearing guests in other rooms, which I was concerned with going into the trip. It is definitely not one of the upscale parts of town, but the neighborhood had a great vibe and there were countless shops, bars, and restaurants within a 10 minute walk, and the waterfront area within about a 20 minute walk. This is where we stayed during our trip to Newport. The location was perfect for us because our friends live a block and a half away. It is right next to the police department which we didn't even really notice. The best part is that it is walking distance to so many restaurants, bars, parks, and shopping. We stayed over the 4th of July and ended up walking to a gorgeous pier to watch the fireworks on the 5th. The price for the weekend was at least half of what everywhere else was charging in the area. We stayed in Henry's Suite and the room was great. The bed could have been a little less firm but we are not complaining. The bathroom even has a jetted tub! It would have been easy to sleep one more person on the little twin futon that was in the entrance of the room. We had breakfast in the mornings that consisted of eggs made to order, bacon, fruit, bagels, and of course the pie! The mother/daughter team that runs the place are both very friendly and helpful. We hope to return to Newport someday and will defiantly stay at the Henry Collins again. read more

My husband and I stayed at the inn Memorial Day weekend. The owner and her daughter are very nice and welcoming. The room was very clean, the bed comfortable and the food delicious. Location of the inn is perfect and we were able to leave our car in the parking lot and walk to the downtown area attractions and restaurants. We would definitely stay there again. read more

We had a great stay at the inn when staying in Newport for a friends wedding. The staff is very accommodating, even staying later for us to check in after the wedding. My boyfriend also forgot contact solution and the owner went back to her own house to get some for him. We would definitely stay here again. I live a few towns over and this is where I send my friends when they are visiting Newport! Located in the up and coming section of Newport, it is only a 2 minute walk to some of the trendiest and most popular restaurants in town, including Mission Burger, Empire Tea, Scratch Kitchen, Salvation Cafe and many others. Shopping, Newport Harbor, Museums, and Newport events are but a short walk away. The mother/daughter owners run the inn, giving it a real, hometown feeling from locals that truly know the area and is reasonably priced as well. Built in 1900 and renovated in 2012, the inn has an unique and charming architectural feel. The Inn has its own parking (valuable in Newport) and the rooms are comfortable, roomy, and air conditioned. Breakfast is offered with actual fresh fruit, yogurt, bread and cereal; and an expanded menu and homemade pie (by the owner!!) is offered on the weekend. Good conversation with international travelers can be had over breakfast or just enjoy quiet mornings if you wish. read more
