Came in here pretty late with some coworkers after working all day and wanting a late night bite to eat. I was craving sushi so we found this spot that was open late! There was a tonnnn of construction out front so it took us a bit to find parking, but we persevered for the sush! And I'm glad we did. We were probably one of like two maybe three groups of people in the restaurant so it was rather slow, but again, very late on a weeknight so I wasn't super surpised. We ordered a bunch of different rolls and I'm assuming because we were pretty much the only ones there, they decided to serve it to us on the sushi boat! FIVE STARS FOR A SUSHI BOAT MOMENT! I went crazy. Absolutely loved it!!! What a fun way to serve our sushi. The sushi we ate was super delicious and fresh and I really enjoyed it. I came for dinner with some coworkers after a very long day of travel and working. We were pretty hungry and ordered a variety of different rolls and such. We came just a bit before they're closing on the later side and we're some of the only customers there. I honestly can't remember what rolls we specifically ordered, but there was one that had a really good garlic sauce that I thoroughly enjoyed. Overall, they had a good selection. They did bring out our rolls on a boat, which was extra special. I sadly did not take any pictures but lots of props to them for that. I do feel really bad for them because the construction out front made parking really annoying. Hopefully that will be concluded soon. The Doordash person stole my 60 dollar delivery order. I had to go over in person to get it. 20 more dollars and a huge inconvenience. In both cases, they should have comped my order, or offered future comps. They are not reasonable when you explain it to them. And they are unserious. They barely understand you. My husband and I were on a date night while my parents were in town and decided to check out another restaurant nearby. Sadly they were booked up for a while and we didn't have the time to wait it out. We decided to check out my bookmarks and found Izu Sushi. It was completely empty which was a bit concerning but we came in anyway. A few people came in after us but they were definitely busy with takeout. We tried to use the check in discount on here but they no longer offer it. They were having some good "deals" on sushi so we decided to go with those and then order a specialty roll and some cream cheese wontons. The wontons were the star of the show, perfectly crisp and not lacking on filling like so many others. Sushi was all decent, seemed fresh, but nothing really stood out. Ordered delivery last night - first time eating their food - timely delivery and the 10-12 rolls / nigiri we'd ordered were all placed on a single large round platter. The presentation was easily the best take out / delivery presentation I've seen other than a spot in Oahu, HI. Soy sauce and wasabi plentiful, everything was perfect - and the taste was terrific as well - nigiri fresh, rolls as advertised, just satisfying for all of us! Humbly sitting on Colfax near Voodoo Doughnut, I've driven by so many times and to be honest, it's easy to miss. My friends wanted sushi on a brutally cold day. We came in with fairly low expectations and walked out content, warm and STUFFED. I feel like in every food review I write I mention how starving I was. Well, our visit to Izu was no exception. To be honest, quantity was trumping quality. To our delight, quality is taken seriously here, too. Crab Rangoons are exquisitely presented on a star and moon-shaped plate. Some of the best 'goons I've had in awhile. Let's be honest, a bad rangoon is still good, right? These were crunchy and the filling was creamy. We got a second order for the table! The Spicy Crunch Roll combo is a hungry appetite's fantasy. Spicy crunch tuna, yellowtail and salmon for $20. TWENTY DOLLARS for 24 pieces of sushi. Talk about balling on a budget. In this economy, who's turning down a deal? With my friends low sodium soy sauce and wasabi by my side, I went from cold and hungry to warm and one hell of a gut busting food coma. So we are not experts in sushi, we assumed everything was wrapped in seaweed and rice. I got the cucumber roll which was just that, and i got avocado sushi, which was avocado with rice in the middle. The portions were extremely small. It was delicious though. My pictures show my and my boyfriends dish, so my order was at the bottom right corner. We were going to go do a lot of walking so u didn't want a heavy meal. I would say, make sure you know what you are getting before ordering. I ordered the Izu Sushi version of my go-to rolls, spicy tuna crunch and tempura sweet potato maki and, with a bogo deal, I got a second spicy tuna crunch as a hand roll. The spicy tuna was not too mayonnaise-y, had a mild garlicky flavor that amped up the umami factor, and the "crunch", which turned out to be panko breadcrumbs, was a tasty textural addition that I am very here for. The hand roll version was shaped very neatly with the ingredients tucked tidily together in a flatter shape that reminded me of conical musubi. There was plenty of tuna all the way down to the very tip making it feel quite substantial. The sweet potato roll was the simple carb-on-carb-on-carb standard I know and love featuring a light crispy tempura batter that pairs perfectly with a bit of eel sauce. I picked up a to-go order and the place was completely empty at 7pm on a Saturday night, so I suspect that most of their business is takeout. The lack of in-person patrons and a rather strong fishy smell inside the restaurant had me a little concerned about my choices, but don't let the lack of ambiance scare you off from the food. Sushi is very dependent on both the quality of the fish and the expertise of the chef. It is surprising to many people that landlocked Denver has extremely high-quality seafood. You see, there's this thing called airplanes that evens the playing field with coastal locations. Denver has some of the top seafood wholesalers in the country with contacts all over the world plus an airport with many international connections. Super fresh fish flies in every morning. So, despite Denver's location, restaurants have no problem obtaining top quality product. That leaves the chef as the main variable to finding good sushi in Denver. I've been going to Izu since they opened eight years ago. They are just a few blocks from my home. The quality has always been up and down--mostly good, sometimes fair, and, occasionally, not so great. My latest visit was a revelation. I brought a friend who is very, very picky and has extensive experience with ultra high-end sushi. We both agreed that this was one of the best sushi dinners we had ever experienced. Every item was super fresh, flawlessly prepared, and presented with elegance and visual flair. We polished off every speck, down to the last grain of rice and fish roe. We're still talking about the experience several days later. We started with the Hakutsuru Junmai Dai Ginjo. This was a truly excellent sake. Very subtle, but extremely flavorful. The waiter then surprised us with an amuse bouche. This was a beautifully presented large plate with some coils of tuna in a vinaigrette-style sauce, accompanied by a shrimp, an edible flower, and some shaved bits of various vegetables. A great start to the meal. A gorgeous platter then arrived with our Hawaii Dragon roll, Toro, White Tuna, Mackerel, and Uni, accompanied by various sauces. The Eel arrived a few minutes later, in a large spoon-shaped dish. Again, everything was beautiful to look at and tasted even better. I'd like to see the head chef's resume. Was an awkward dining experience. I dined in on a Friday around 4:30 PM thinking they had a happy hour, but it looks as if that has since been removed (really was my fault for not investigating further). Currentlt, they have a lunch special of "20% off" from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM. When I arrived, the server checked in on us every other minute and was pretty aggressive in suggesting sodas and appetizers, none of which we wanted. This made for a rather awkward dining experience, as we (party of 2) were the only customers in the restaurant at the time. That said, I think their food is actually pretty decent. I enjoyed their unagi and spicy scallop rolls a lot. Their specialty rolls, however, are just okay - not incredible, not awful. (Though the Crazy Tuna Roll was simultaneously strangely bland and very peppery). The sushi rice was just okay - somewhat dry on a couple of the pieces. The ginger given to us seemed old (dry and with some gray discoloration). Overall, I think ordering to-go would be the best move if you were to choose this restaurant to dine from. I'm not convinced that I'd return here given so many other sushi options in the area for the same price point. Izu does have other items on the menu that are NOT sushi, but the other hot food items still doesn't make this restaurant stand out. read more

This is my go to neighborhood sushi spot. Now I must point out that I only eat cooked sushi or shellfish sushi - so I'm not out here getting fresh tuna or salmon BUT, the flavors and combinations are spot on. My go to is the shaggy dog roll which is always excellent. It contains a pretty good amount of buttery crab and the sauce really makes it. I was coming to this place often last year just to pick up my order but this year I noticed how cute it really is inside. Eating here yesterday was one of the sketchiest experiences of my life. I do not understand why this place has 4 stars. When we walked in, there was a very strong foul odor coming from the water feature. It smelled like they have never cleaned the water! The temperature in the restaurant was also very warm, like the AC was broken, and it was hot outside! We should've walked out then. We thought maybe this was a diamond in the rough because the reviews were good, so we decided to stick it out. Ordered the "goons" mentioned in previous yelp reviews, and there was almost no crab in them, all cream cheese! The rolls were ok, the service was good, seeing as we were one of two tables in the whole restaurant. But halfway through eating, a unhoused person who had been lingering outside the entrance walked in. He had to be chased out of the restaurant! Two stars because the food was delicious and the value for what we ordered was excellent. That being said it needs to be noted the service was horrible. We walked in and were seated immediately. The only other customers in the business were a family of 4. We waited for over 25 minutes before we had anyone come to our table. We watched 3 employees wrap utensils in napkins the entire time. I made eye contact with one employee who said they would be right over but they continued talking and wrapping. Our order was finally taken and it did not take long to receive the food. Was feeling pretty basic and got a california roll, vegetable tempura and miso soup. The vegetable tempera was breaded a little bit heavily deposing on your preference but it was super crispy and delicious especially for takeout. The sushi was perfect and the miso soup hit the spot. I was passing by and decided to enter to dine in. I read many good Yelp reviews and decided to give it a try. The place is clean and neat. The atmosphere is calm and boring. Music should be a bit more upbeat to set a happy mood for everyone, especially the staff. They seemed too tired. I ordered some tempura vegetables, a mango and avocado salad and some sushi rolls. I expected them to show up in that order. It did t happened. The salad was boring, lettuce, some shredded carrots, sliced avocado and mango and topped with black sesame seeds. However, the salad desperately needed a sauce or dressing to bin the other ingredients. The lettuce still had water, so it wasn't properly drained it out. So there you have it, just three elements and no flavor. And in the middle of the salad was the core of the lettuce, bitter, big, and of course inedible. That's the reason for losing one star. The sushi rolls were good. One thing in particular is that the rice is just a thin layer, compared to other places where is so thick that you get full quickly for the big amount of rice. Good si she of the tools, properly cut and uniform, but also good flavor. The vegetables tempura were good too. Just an observation: try to diversify the vegetables, my plate had big slices of sweet potatoes mostly. Still the flavors and sauce were on point. So no harm there. In overall, there is a good value for the money and I was happy. I'm hoping to update the review next time and I hope they have adjusted that salad so they can recuperate the lost ground. We were craving Asian food and discovered Izu had high ratings on Yelp. I have no idea how it was so highly rated as it must of gone down hill recently. We walked in and most of the tables were unoccupied at 730 on a Friday night. Our waitress brought us waters and then disappeared. We sat there for a good 15 minutes before she came back and took our order. When ordering, we asked about a dish and she told us not to get it because it wasn't any good. What server tells a customer that a meal they have isn't good?? After moving the menu on our table we quickly recognized our table was dirty and hadn't been wiped off. The waitress was nowhere in sight so we sat here for a good 15 minutes just to get our salads. By then we decided we would just let it go because it was apparent the service was lacking. The entree came out a short time later. The vegetables for the chicken teriyaki were cold and had obviously been undercooked and sitting out for a while before we were brought our food. I ate the chicken on the plate and that was it after having tried a piece of each of the vegetables. I will say that the California roll was good, but the rest of my meal was terrible. We waited a good 20 minutes after eating for the bill. I was even more horrified after seeing their current health score rating before starting this review. This is such an underrated spot. There's not a ton of sushi in Capitol Hill, and this is truly a gem. The sushi bar is stunning and the whole place is clean and chic. The service can be great some days and not-so great others, but I've come here upwards of 10 times and the food is great and honestly so cheap for what you get. Ok so this place is hit or miss it's not that high end by any means but middle of the road but I went recently and dined in (I usually go on weeknights which does have a good sushi/sashimi deal). However even then I did get some cold(all most frozen salmon sashimi) and that was not good. Sushi should never be cold like that. But I looked past it due to the deal. But now I'm a little less down with this place. And unless you are going to get something very specific to the type of fish it feels like a better deal to do to pokebowl. Let's start off this review by saying Denver is a Sh*t hole. We needed to stay over one night to catch an early AM flight home and we never really felt safe. On this Wednesday eve, when we got back down to Denver we did a yelp search and decided on Izu Sushi on Colfax Ave because I guess we are gluttons for punishment. Needless to say the area is absolutely sketchy and riddled with homeless, drug addicts and criminals (do not stop at the 7-Eleven on Colfax before Izu. We saw a guy pull down his ski mask as soon as we pulled in and we left immediately). We probably would have spent more time hitting 1Up and Voodoo Donuts if we didn't feel like we had to risk our lives to hang out in the area. The restaurant was empty at 6:30pm and stayed empty the entire time we were there. It's a nice interior with a lot of seating. Spacious and comfy. Im guessing/hoping the place gets packed on the weekends. While we were the only people there, they do a very brisk take away business. They are hammering out Uber eats and DoorDash orders the entire time so that gave me a little hope regarding the turnover and freshness. We ordered green salads, crab Rangoon and edamame to start. They all came out quick and were delicious. For dinner we ordered a bunch of sushi, sashimi and rolls which also came out pretty fast. Everything was delicious, fresh, and tasty. The fish was buttery. The Salmon Skin roll was comprised mainly of salmon skin and some vegetables. The rice was spot on. Izu Sushi can easily put itself up against any coastal sushi place and stand on its own. We didn't have any alcoholic beverages (they have a full bar and sake menu) so the bill was around $150 for a ton of food. No one left hungry. Very good value for the quality of food. The only reason this place isn't 5 stars is because of the communal ordering sheet (dry erase) and the eventual communal serving of the food. I'm not a fan of mixing 5 people's orders onto one boat. I like my order on my plates in front of me, but that's me. Also, not everything is on the whiteboard so you have to write them in somewhere.
