** I changed my review from two stars to four stars because it really is a fabulous bar with the best food and ambience, it would've been a five star experience had the bartender been attentive to me at all I got a recommendation from a local to come to this place because they had a really great beer selection and cheese curds, both of which I was desperately looking for while in Milwaukee. The bar is very cool, it has a garage door style opening so you can sit inside while still being able to see everything outside. The lighting is awesome, the best thing was they had outlets to plug your phone in at almost every place there was to sit. Awesome, I wish every restaurant did this. Now things kind of take a turn. First, the beer menu did not match the one on line on their website, which, no big deal, but I was looking for specific beer that they didn't have. I made do, no biggie. I then ordered cheese curds and a Smashburger, both of which were phenomenal. The beer was fine, but just OK, I definitely would've preferred the one I had picked out before I got there. Anyway, the big problem was that there was only three people in the bar me and a couple. The bartender hovered around this couple the entire time I was there. I had to ask for a beer, I had asked for my second beer, I had to ask for a Diet Coke, I had to ask for a refill for my Diet Coke. She paid literally no attention to me. It was disconcerting because I'm also paying customer that tips. This girl did not seem to care one bit. She was really bad at noticing I was there at all. Anyway. Izzy Hops is the best place to go for a yummy brunch, especially if you're looking for (kind of) bottomless mimosas. It a great deal, because they just leave the bottle and OJ on the table and you can make the mimosas yourself. The bottles are cheap and perfect for a group to share. Izzy Hops is a really beautiful space, it's hard to imagine it used to be Rascals! It has such a warm, cozy vibe like you're hanging out at home. Or maybe it's just how I want my home to look? We finally tried the food and the bf and I were impressed. The portabella sandwich was tasty and I had enough for lunch the next day. The Philly burger, although messy, was enjoyed thoroughly by my bf. We were a little out of luck the day we went, the first two taps we wanted to try ran out the night before. Their food order didn't come in that week so they were out of slaw and fries. We had the only other option as a side, homemade chips. I normally avoid chips at restaurants but they were actually good! Some were chewy which I liked, but most crispy. They were seasoned with Parmesan and parsley. I'll be back to try their brunch and other menu items. They have happy hour as well with $2 off apps and drink specials. They have several TVs if you want to catch a game. I couldn't decide if 3 stars was just right or too much, honestly. After reading what I wrote, I decided 3 stars is probably appropriate. Once upon a time I said this place couldn't decide what it wants to be: an upscale liquor bar or a college hang out. That identity crisis still exists to some degree, but I'd say the high end liquor bar ultimately won out. Beers range from $6-12 a pint and they do offer a good selection of canned/bottled options, but there's not a $3-5 tallboy on the menu. As always, they have an amazing selection of taps and represent local beers extremely well. They also offer small pours (about 6oz) for discounted prices. A $9 pint equates to a $3 or $4 6oz pour. It's a great way to sample a lot of beers without worrying you're going to fall on your face. The bourbon selection is astounding. The cocktails are always unique and very well done. I really enjoyed the Definitely Okay with More Rose. The interior is really nice. The bar is opulent, the decor is comforting and upscale at the same time. The staff is, as always, wonderful. And yet. . . Oh, what happened Izzy Hops? The menu has never been expansive and certainly was left over from the shared kitchen with Davino's but there were some highlights--the Italian beef and the Cubano come to mind. In our first visit since late 2019, I was disappointed with the menu offerings. 2 burgers, one veggie burger, mac and cheese, a jumbo hotdog, a chicken caprese sandwich, and a chicken and bacon wrap. Pizzas, salads, and the usual array of appetizers rounded out the menu. I was looking for that one stand-out offering and I didn't really see one. The food was okay, not great. The mac and cheese tasted exactly like it came out of a box, which don't get me wrong, I love but to pay $13 for it seemed excessive. The $10 jumbo Chicago dog delivered. The food prices in general seem a bit high. I know they're in line with places like Good City, the currently shuttered Hooligans, and Hacienda Brewing Company, but the food quality currently isn't. We used to come here for brunch because it was a hidden gem in terms of quality and price, but I saw that some items that were regular favorites of ours had jumped $5 in price. I get it. . .pandemic and supply chains and all that. A $5 price jump on what was an $8 offering seems excessive. read more

I stopped in a couple of weeks ago on a Friday night. The place was quiet when I arrived but the energy picked up within about 20 minutes of my arrival. Several groups of friends entered, set up camp at a table, and continued their fun night. This place seems to have become a popular neighborhood gathering place, which is cool. The crowd was mostly 20 somethings. I sat at the bar and ordered the Cajun Shrimp Wontons app, Italian Beef sandwich, and their J. Henry Maple Old Fashioned. I enjoyed the variety of upbeat, yet softly played music in that background which encouraged conversation. The Shrimp Wontons were delicious. I didn't taste the Cajun spices on the shrimp and the wonton wrap could have been a little crispier, but they were very good, simply filled with shrimp and cream cheese. I would order them again. The Italian Beef sandwich exceeded my expectations. The beef was tender and very well-seasoned. Giardiniera was served on the side, so you can control how spicy you want it, and a bold, flavorful jus was served on the side, so you can dip your sandwich if you want and not have a drippy, sloppy mess or not dip at all and enjoy the sandwich as is. I would definitely order this again and highly recommend it! The sandwich comes with house made potato chips that are dusted with parmesan. I liked them for the most part. I especially appreciated that they weren't cooked in dirty oil, so they didn't have the dark brown, burnt, bitter flavor to them. Most chips were crispy, while some had a stale texture. The J. Henry Maple Old Fashioned was great! If you prefer a slightly sweeter old fashioned, this one does the job. In the category of bars that serve food, I give Izzy Hops and Nosh 5 stars. Shoutout to Nadia!!!!! She was the best bartender and had amazing recommendations! We're from Texas so we didn't know too many spots. We drove past this bar as everything else was super packed from shamrock shuffle. It looked kind of empty so we were hesitant. I'm so glad we decided to stop here. We got here around 11pm and kitchen closed at 10pm so we were not able to try the food. We are not IPA people, but the kombucha blueberry basil was super good! Shout out again to Nadia for giving us a sample! The service was amazing. After an hour or two everyone was gone and it was only us 2 and Nadias mom and friend. They were so cool and friendly! I was looking for a spot near North Avenue that served brunch and when I did the search, it came up as a result. Yet, no pictures of brunch and a menu to come? We decided to go anyways and the board on the sidewalk said $15 bottomless mimosas (Sundays). Sold! HOW IS THIS PLACE NOT MORE POPULAR FOR BRUNCH?!?! First off, they basically have bottomless mimosas. 3 bottles of champagne with OJ carafe for $23?!?! The mimosa jam is such a fun thing in Chicago, why has it not arrived in Milwaukee?!?! They have a great brunch menu also. And the service is so friendly! ALSO it must be mentioned! Nice spot for a beer and a bite on the east side. In summer, Izzy Hops has outdoor seating and a garage door that opens to the sidewalk. The interior has exposed Cream City brick. The beer selection is great, and Izzy Hops offers a selection of sizes from a $1 taste to growlers, which ranges in price from $12 for Miller Lite (a growler of Lite? Really?) to $30 or more for more expensive or rarer brews. The appetizers were okay. The pretzel was enormous but lacked the sale you might expect, and the cheese sauce was a little disappointing. The eggplant fries were good. Some of the burgers and sandwiches we saw delivered to other tables looked great, so I think I'll skip the snacks and go straight to entrees next time. When asking for ID's, mine was returned cracked and nearly broken into two pieces. When confronting the staff regarding this issue they claimed they were given the ID to them cracked, broken and nearly in two pieces. How is an ID to be considered valid if the customer is turning in a nearly broken ID? Either the staff is lying and damaged the ID or they are accepting ID's in nearly two pieces. Rational doesnt make any sense. Extremely rude staff. They need to learn how to check an ID without snapping the ID in half and causing the customer with a large issue to deal with. I now have a cost to order a new one and cannot use my broken ID that was returned to me. Will never return or recommend. read more

This is kind of my new spot for the North Avenue area. It's not divey but it's not pretentious either. I'm mostly a beer drinker so I appreciate the 30 taps. For awhile they had Toppling Goliath Pseudo Sue which is popular among the craft-beer crowd and for good reason. They get some other interesting ones too. But the bartenders also know how to make cocktails, rest assured. The food is also good. So far I've only had the chicken Parmesan sandwich which was solid. They have house-made chips. I think the menu has changed since they opened, but the other patrons I've seen have seemed to enjoy their food. I should go for brunch sometime just because it seems like there might be a slightly rowdy brunch crowd. Y'all like to drink, in other words. Not judging, it's probably fun. It's mostly a younger crowd, on par for North Ave. I keep mentioning that probably because I'll be spotted as an imposter soon (j/k) but I haven't seen a lot of idiot college-student behavior. Maybe some "drunk girls hanging out in the bathroom" stuff but nothing over the top. Stopped by on a Sunday around 4pm and we had our choice of tables! The strong point of Izzy is the interior. Industrial but polished, nice lighting, and clean. Our server was pleasant but service was average. We ordered 2 apps and got a stack of plates to use. All of the plates had crumbs on them and one had a butter smear. I was surprised by this and asked for all new ones. Cheese curds and shrimp wontons were good but the wonton was heavy on the cream cheese and light on the shrimp. I did enjoy the hoisin sauce dip! Other items ordered around the table were jalapeño popper burger, Italian beef sandwich, smokehouse burger and bacon and egg cheeseburger. My jalapeño burger's meat was juicy but there needed to be more mayo or something creamier to cut the heat. The standout was the Italian beef! Tender meat and the bread was hearty yet soft. Shortcomings were the coleslaw and house chips. Both had little flavor! The slaw needed more salt and although the chips are dusted with cheese it tasted like crunchy cardboard. This place has great potential so I hope that future plates are cleaned and sides are salted! read more

I went to Izzy Hops for Happy Hour on a Saturday. It's a smaller, cozy bar that caters to sports and has a wide variety of local/different beer. The beer list offered a variety of options including some sours, reds, and porters. I started off with a pumpkin beer, then went to a flight to test out more options. All of my choices (two porters, a fruity, and a 12.5% ABV) were delicious! While I was there, a football game was on that garnered lots of attention. There was music playing in the background at first which was nice to listen to and kept the volume at a reasonable level, but then someone requested the audio from the game and it become difficult to hear the people at my table. Obviously not a huge issue, since this bar caters to sports, but still less intriguing if you're not interested in the game that's on. Didn't try any of the food, but what I saw looked incredible! A fun place to eat and socialize! They have a lot of different weekly specials, like $9 pizzas on Monday, Tuesday Triva, and Thursday Karaoke (and that's only the ones I remember). Most days they have the front wall open, and you can sit outside. Super easy to order food to your table when you go up to the bar. The staff are nice, and their food is good. The food is definitely not your traditional American style, so not everything may be your style. Personally, I didn't like the fried chicken. But many things are great imo! I recommend the meatball sub. Super nice. I also had their Italian sub on another visit. For their appetizers, the curds are ok, absolutely love the ranch with them though. And the pretzel is great. The Indeed Key Lime Sour was phenomenal. This place had some great reviews so came to check it out on a weeknight with my son. If I were comparing it to other, what I'd call "bar food" places, I may have given it 4 stars, because it was decent. But given our burger and deli tour backgrounds, I got the bacon and egg burger and my son the Italian beef so this comparison is to the best in town and in fell a bit short. The ratios on this burger were great (bun, meat, cheese etc) and it hit the spot in terms of satisfying my hunger, but the egg was over cooked with no yolk running through it (the best part of an egg on a burger), the bacon was also overdone, near burnt. The bun was great, toasted and the right size for the burger. And again, for a "bar food" burger not bad but compared to the best egg burgers in town (Stack'd Hangover burger or Jake's Burger's Brunch burger), it wasn't even close. My son got the Italian beef and at first bite it was very good but as he ate it, the saltiness of the jus and sandwich caught up with him. I tried some and the jus was super salty and the bread also tasted as if it were a garlic salted cheese bread, which sounds great, but was a little too much garlic salt. We also got the cheese curds as an appetizer, they were good. But when we ordered the food, the waiter asked if we wanted fries or chips, assuming it was included we both got fries, but were charged $2 ea for fries, which were limp and soggy. The burger was $11 and with the fries at $2, an overpriced meal. But if you're already here and hanging with friends, watching a game and want some decent bar food, it'll do the trick. read more
