We had a family outing to Izzy's. Their pickles are so good and it's a cute spot to get some tasty sandwiches and potato pancakes. We were a group of five and the staff were so nice throughout the visit. My grandparents split a meal and they served their half sandwiches and half potato pancake on separate plates for them. My mom ordered the beast Reuben and it was HUGE! There was a lot of meat and having it between two potato pancakes was lavish. It was also served with an additional potato pancake. She only finished half of it. I had the Goetta Reuben, I was trying to get two Cincinnati classics at a time. I realized I prefer my Goetta extra crispy, so even though it was tasty I would get a regular Reuben next time. Stopped in at this local deli for a good corned beef sandwich and it didn't disappoint. Don't have a lot of delis in my part of the country so it's a treat when I can find a place that serves deli sandwiches. I got the soup and sandwich combo. The beef barley soup was delicious, hearty, meaty and flavorful, a soup very few places serve anymore. The corned beef sandwich was served on a light rye bread. A good sandwich but a long cry from a New York corned beef sandwich. The corned beef was shaved instead of sliced. So while it appeared to be a thick serving of corned beef it wasn't. Still it was flavorful and I enjoyed it. The surprise was the potato pancake. This was your grandmother's pancake, not the hash brown type pancake most restaurants serve as a potato pancake. It was the star of the meal. Service was good and friendly, the restaurant was clean and a typical fast food environment. Apparently this is a local chain having grown from its original store at the turn of the century. There were three of us for the visit, two ordered the soup and half sandwich and the third ordered a whole sandwich without soup. We each had a fountain soda. I won a gift certificate to Izzy's, so we headed here for an easy Friday night dinner - this was the closest location to our house. I went with the Veggie Reuben half-sandwich, which is definitely heavy on the sauerkraut. My husband had an Egg Salad half-sandwich, which was fine. The best part of the mail was the hearty Potato Pancakes that came with our sandwiches. The complimentary bowl of pickles we received before our meal was also a nice selling point. I love Izzy's and have been in this location many times. It is a small place, but I have always had good service, seems the waitresses have been there a long time. They honor the Buckeye card everyday. I love the Izzy burger, meat loaf sandwich and have had the Ruben also. Jewish friends told me for years that they hated Izzy's and I didn't understand why until I went to a few authentic delicatessens in other cities like New York. The difference is the quality of the ingredients--particularly the rye bread, corned beef (or pastrami, depending on your preference), and broth in the chicken-based soups. Izzy's just isn't in the same league. Rascals in Blue Ash is the closest I know to real thing, and the quality there has been a little inconsistent over the year as chefs have come and gone. The only thing that I still prefer at Izzy's are the potato pancakes. True Jewish latkes are thinner, crisper, and probably infinitely better for you, but Izzy's has forever ruined me for ones that aren't the size of catcher's mitts. read more

My personal experience has always been good, I have been to this location more than a dozen times over the last 5 or 6 years. It's nothing spectacular to me but it does have decent German potato pancakes and I love the pickles they put on the tables. The service has always been acceptable. My bill was 8.79, I was charged 87.99 on my card and the manager didn't even apologize. And I got my usual thing which is only 7.99, or supposed to be. I never thought I'd ever see the day when I visited an Izzy's restaurant at noon...12:00, and the restaurant be almost completely empty ? 3 tables, two people at each table ! Then I was in line, 1 person in front of me that already put is " go order in " and I think I found out why ? A waitress came running over, passed me up, and went straight to I guess a " regular " and ask his order. He gave it to her, then she walked back past me again, and starting filling up catsup bottles. The lady I assume was the Mgr. saw what happened and she took my order. Well, the gentleman that pushed in front of me got his order, left, so that left just me. I ordered a Reuben with an extra potato cake. Well guess what ? Their was only 1 potato cake left, it seems the gentleman that went in front of me got the last 1 ? Sooo, I waited, tick tock, waited, tick tock, waited, tick tock ! Now, since I had to park 4 blocks away, the fear of my meter running out in downtown Cinc. and them giving me a ticket, or worse towing my car, was getting the best of me ! But, I waited, tick tock, waited, tick tock. The young girl fixing the sandwiches, BY HERSELF with no help, said " Sir, I am waiting on your xtra cake ! I nodded my head and ...waited, tick tock, waited tick tock. Now, this very sharp mgr. noticed I had WAITED an unusually long time, so decided she was going to " get on the ball and find out why I was still their " ! She " got off the phone " and went into the kitchen and guess what ? She came out with a rack full of potato cakes that had been sitting their for oh, 15 minutes maybe ? Now I'm thinking since the cook put my 1st cake in the box 20 minutes ago, she would surely give me two fresh potato cakes right ? I mean since they took xtra time fixing them and I'm sure they were good and hot right ? So, with no energy left in me and the fear of a ticket I didn't think doing the Mgr's job and explaining WHY I would have gotten two fresh cakes I just left ! I got to my car which I had put $1.00 in the meter and recd. 27 minutes of time, guess what was on my windshield ? Cincinnati is full of so many wonderfully cultures, I love it! It gives me the opportunity to try so many delectable dishes and see so many hot a$$ people. I think I saw an Asian/Venezuelan mixed girl today that was just ridiculous! Anyway, Izzy's. Never cared to try a Reuben before because frankly, corned beef and sauerkraut aren't exactly my go to ingredients for a sandwich. At least that was before I sunk my teeth into that hot, delicious masterpiece. I want to note that I cannot speak on service because I was a walk in order, however everybody was genuinely cordial. I can smell b.s. a mile away so you're good on that. Only thing I can say about bad service is that if you are in a place and you sense that the service staff, not just in restaurants but anywhere, doesn't seem particular happy to assist you. There is a slight chance that you are being an a$$ to the person trying to assist you. Keep that in mind. Anyway, Izzy's makes a damn good sandwich. I got the regular Reuben how it comes. Izzy knows more about Reuben's than me so I just let them make it how it was intended and it was delicious. An extra added bonus was the latke, or potato pancake or whatever.
