My family and I dined Saturday evening for my dad's 60th birthday. I chose to eat here because the atmosphere was nice for a special occasion but also because of the variety of the menu. Our food was very good. Among the four of us we chose; ribs, seafood pasta and the Maui Ribeye. Everyone enjoyed their meal selection. I had the ribeye and loved it. It was like the drippings of a Christmas ham except on a good cut of beef. I would come back for that by itself. My only regret was not getting a salad to accompany my meal, but next time I will. If I had one minor complaint, it would be the service. Our waiter was not very inviting. He took our order but he wasn't very personable. I'm afraid that like Emeril they need to kick it up a notch! I ordered the soup with chicken and penne pasta as an appetizer. It had a nice thickness to it and creamy bur it was a potato-based soup. The menu didn't really make that clear. It had peapods in it and it was a nice flavor but I wouldn't call it super high-end. The same could be said of my entrée. I ordered the bayou pasta with crab shrimp and scallops. I got bass scallops. I was able to identify a few shrimp. The crab disappeared into the sauce maybe or was never put in the sauce? I did asked him to do it without bell peppers because I hate bell peppers and they did an added Mushrooms as per my request. The real superstar of the evening was the Keylime pie with graham cracker crust. If that's all I had I would've given this place five stars! It was fabulous. It was way overpriced as were the entrées. I'm not sure this is a great dining a value and I think they're going to have to kick it up a notch in terms of food quality if they're going to demand those kinds of prices. It's been a couple of years, I think, since I lunched here, so decided to drop by for a working lunch. The first thing that hits you about J Alexander - even just walking in from the parking lot - is the look and "feel" of the place. Love the architecture - clean, simple lines, warm earth tones - you step inside and you've got a view into a working kitchen, sharply dressed friendly, attentive wait staff (Taylor was our server - Great Job!) - all in black so there is this kind of upscale, casual feel about the place that manages to accommodate jeans on one end of the scale and designer suits in the other. The layout is non-traditional - bar tucked away to the left - still visible - but offering some privacy if you want it. As I said, the working kitchen is straight ahead and the dining areas spread out to your right, with options for open area tables as well as more intimate booths which - I can tell you from previous visits - are well designed. Unlike booths in other places where I've been - the ones here make you feel like you've got the place to your self - comfortable, great lighting, great acoustics so conversation just WORKS. In short, this is, in my view, one of the best "date" night spots in BR with great atmosphere. On to the food - my friend had the Rattlesnake Tagliatelle which he said was delicious and very filling - so much so that he took some home. I ordered the Thai Kai Salad - which was lighter and yet still pretty filling. Great mix of fresh greens and shredded, perfectly cooked chicken and a peanut/satay dressing with Thai seasoning that sets it apart. $4 IPAs on offer wth the lunch made it pretty hard to pass up. This place was a little disappointing I was hoping to find a nice steak joint. We wanted to go somewhere different than Longhorns and since we were in the area we thought we would try something else different but this place is too all over the place as far as food goes I would not have things like pub food here. I cannot complain about the staff though they were following protocols and were very very friendly. We had a few drinks and moved on. Went there for diner yesterday right after the movie with my two kids. I was surprised the restaurant wasn't " kids friendly " nothing special written on the menu for them and no drawings/crayons for them. But they did have specials meals for them. The food was perfectly delicious. I had the strip and NY Mac and cheese and my husband the baby back ribs. I couldn't finish mine because it was huge but we still wanted to try the desert. So Js is def one of my favs in Baton Rouge. Of course I got the cypress salad and my friend got the chicken and smashed potatoes. I can't speak much on there dish other that the presentation was beautiful. My cypress salad is amazing it hits all taste on the palate. From crunchy to salt to sweet to subtle! This place is solid! Nice place to bring a date after shopping at the Mall of Louisiana. A little dark and trendy interior sets the mood. I haven't been here in awhile since I've moved from Baton Rouge, but this place still has a place in my heart. From what I remember the Steak Maui (Hawaiian rib-eye) and Tequila Lime chicken was delicious. They also have great house and Caesar salads that comes with a delicious and sweet croissant. It's nothing special, pretty consistent with my experience at other locations. This one has a small, but decent bourbon selection. For a small city like Baton Rouge this is the pay day, dress to impress first date, prom restaurant. But it's your typical chain upscale casual establishment. If you been to Houston's or a Carraba's or Papadeaux you've been here. I went take out on this visit. Took home a very average Caesar salad and some so so fried gulf shrimp. We ate hear on a road trip passing through BR. There aren't a ton of great options within a mile or two of this place. We tried a chain seafood restaurant on our first pass through and were very disappointed. J. Alexander's was a welcome change. Their french dip sandwich is one of the best I've ever had, and they serve it with skinny fries. I love skinny fries! Service was spot-on too. Pretty sure this place is an offshoot of Houston's. The SERVICE WAS HORRIBLE! The food was delicious but the Server & Management staff were the worst. We kept having to remind the Server of things over and over, then I asked her privately if there was some sort of birthday dessert we could purchase as we were there celebrating a birthday. She told me that they would bring a piece of carrot cake to the table with a candle for the birthday person at no charge. I was delighted. We continued to eat our food and ordered several rounds of drinks, paid the $350.00 Bill & she still never brought the cake with candle. I then reminded her, of the birthday cake, of which she says "Oh Yea" and runs off only to come back with a piece of cake in a to-go box that she slung on the table at another guest and then scurried away from the table. I was so embarrassed & outraged at her behavior. I then spoke to a manager that told me he'd speak with her and document the situation, but never apologized to the birthday girl, offered to fix it or anything. He just shrugged his shoulders as if to say "Oh Well"! I'd never experienced "so called" higher-end restaurant manager being so nonchalant at how the patrons of the restaurant were treated. He didn't seem to care that we had experience such lack of proper service in his restaurant. We started with the grilled artichoke appetizer which is too good to believe, then I had a filet mignon salad b/c I told the waiter that's what I was in the mood for. It isn't on the menu, but the waiter said they're happy to make it if someone asks for it. It's delicious and I hope they put it on the regular menu! To be fair: my dine-in experiences have always been very good. This place is simply not equipped for curbside orders. I took away one star because there is no dedicated pickup parking. After a year of a pandemic any restaurant run by someone with brains knows there needs to be pickup spots near the door for fast delivery to waiting vehicles. I took away a second star because I arrived at the time I was told the order would be ready but it was not delivered to my vehicle until nearly 15 minutes after arrival. At no point was I contacted to be told the order would be late. I took away a third star because after having to call into the restaurant to notify them I was there, I got shunted around repeatedly and asked the same questions by each new person I spoke with. Again - clear evidence that this place does not take curbside orders seriously. I took away a fourth star because even when it was delivered to my vehicle the entree was not even warm; and if I'd been able to take away a fifth star, I would have, because my family-sized "three pound" order of prime rib actually weighed, when I checked at home, only 2 lbs 10 oz. WITH the container. Unfortunately, apparently 1 star is the lowest allowable rating so this place is getting a higher ranking than I believe they deserve. And since the food wasn't even warm when I got it, needless to say it was even worse when I got it home. Again, I've had great experiences dining in. This place should abandon take-out entirely until it hires people who understand how to do it properly. read more

I went to Baton Rouge for the weekend and decided to try this place out and I was pretty impressed. The decor was very sleek with dark wood and low lights; very cozy feeling. The staff is very friendly and the service was relatively fast. I ordered the Rotisserie Chicken that came with "smashed" potatoes which is just mashed potatoes with the skin included. The chicken was very moist with a nice crunchy skin that was well seasoned. If I had saved enough room for desert I definitely would've tried one of their cakes since those also get good reviews; maybe next time. All in all a great dinner with plenty left over. read more

The hostess, and subsequently the manager refused to seat us without a mask. We'd been standing at the host stand for at least 5 minutes without a mask, 3 members of our party were able to walk over to the bar and order a drink without a mask, patrons were leaving the dining room after their meal maskless (without being forced to mask up to leave), 3 of the men working in the kitchen were wearing their masks on their chin (visible to the entire restaurant). Several other employees, including the manager had his mask under his nose. However, our party "needed" to wear a mask to walk the few feet over to our table in order to be seated. I don't understand how the mask rule only applies in certain instances. We refused to play this silly game. It was simply a power trip. These rules are absurd and protected no one while losing 5 paying customers. We left and went to another restaurant with no mask issues and had a lovely dinner where we spent a great deal of money and tipped our server well. No other restaurant in Baton Rouge is trying to force this nonsense at the risk of losing good, well paying customers. read more

I love this place. I've eaten here over 20 times this 2020. I actually looked that up in my banking app to confirm. I love the NY strip steak and the Mac and cheese it's amazing. The Orso Wild rice is my favorite. Appetizers I love are the deviled eggs. For dessert I'd recommend the carrot cake and the key lime pie. Both are to die for and made in house. We ate here for over 10 years, the food is still good. However over the past 10 years food quality has went down and prices have went up, like most chain restaurants. Fries didn't seem very fresh this round. Had Hyde park chicken sandwich (I Believe its the name) chicken sandwich was delicious. Waiter was friendly on top of drinks for most part. We dropped $70 here & left 20% tip, I have no shame in taking home my leftovers that I've paid for, I'd rather eat them again than have them end up in trash & in a landfill.
