My goodness what a fabulous meal! We shared the deviled eggs to start-so yummy-and two of us had the prime rib while one of us had the jumbo shrimp. That prime rib is probably the best cut of meat I've ever had! And after 10 minutes of having our meal they brought out fresh, warm au jus to replace the au jus that had gotten cold-without being asked! We ended the meal, despite already being full, with their warm, homemade carrot cake. Good lord it was delicious. We will definitely make this our new go-to place to eat in Lexington! read more

If I could rate this establishment less than one star, I would most certainly do so. On the evening of March 18, 2017, myself and 11 of my closest friends arrived 15 minutes early for our 8:45 dinner reservation, to celebrate my birthday. All members of our party were dressed appropriately for the occasion, and was comprised of 2 successful Lexington business owners, a doctor, a nurse, and various other professionals. After admiring the beauty, ambiance, and class of the restaurant, we were sat at a lovely table. Six members of our party ordered a beverage containing alcohol, the rest of the party had various soft drinks. At this time, we placed an order for appetizers for the table. The drinks were brought to the table, shortly followed by the appetizers. Approximately 25 minutes later, another round of drinks were requested, as we ordered our entrees. Our server left the table to place our dinner order. It was then that our table was approached by the manager. He informed us that at his discretion, our table would not be served any further alcohol until after we finished our meal. Considering no one at our table was intoxicated or belligerent, we inquired why he would make such a decision. He rudely stated the issue was not up for debate. As customers prepared to spend a great sum of money for dinner, of course we wished to discuss the issue further. At that time he simply left the table without providing any legitimate rationalization for not serving legal adults with sober drivers more than two drinks at dinner. Within minutes, our server appeared at our table with the check for the appetizers and drinks, and informed us that we would not be served the entrees we ordered, and we should pay for our drinks and appetizers and leave. Never have I been treated so poorly, or humiliated more by someone in the service industry. Lexington is a proud basketball, horse racing, BOURBON town. My dinner guests and I are not college kids. We are not low class trash, which is exactly how we were treated. We are all professional, dignified adults that are baffled by why we were treated so rudely. I would let it go, but after the General Manager told me this morning that "perhaps our restaurant isn't for your type of people" and his restaurant "isn't a bar", I just can't in good conscience see anyone give money to people. read more

I was so happy to find a J. Alexander's in Lexington KY. Went there for lunch today and ordered a long time favorite - Ahi tuna salad. This is the first time I was truly disappointed with a meal at J. Alexander's. The Ahi tuna was advertised as seared - well, seared it was not, not was it rare and it was cold! Guys, how much effort is it to throw the tuna in a pan and sear it? The salad was even worse. The greens were not fresh, and underneath the small mound of stale salad greens was, much to my surprise, a large mound of wonton strips - which were not mentioned anywhere on the menu. Since I was hungry, I ate the cold, medium rare (not rare as listed on the menu) tuna and the stale salad greens. What remained was a plate full of wonton strips. What a disappointment! I also ordered a side of mac and cheese, which was huge for a side and had the strangest flavor ever. It was good, but just odd, and very, very creamy. And, my San Pellegrino arrived without a wedge of lime...so sad! I am truly hesitant to go back. I have always had a great meal at J. Greeting at door was luke warm but server was super (Wendy). Steak was fair, mac cheese was not good ( I order loaded potato), and wife's prime was good. Few mistakes on sides from what we ordered but they brought replacements quickly. Overall I would not return for the steak but maybe will try it again. read more

We liked this place. The food was good, the decor was nice, the service was EXCELLENT. It feels odd only giving it 3 stars. But generally, I give out 4 stars to places I would probably go back to, and 5 stars to places I can't wait to go back to. There wasn't anything specifically wrong with J. Alexander's; it was worth going once, but I don't really need to go back. I ordered one of the artisan pizzas and it was great but the crust was literally paper thin. If that's what you like, then it would have been perfect (but I tend to prefer a little more dough). The roasted chicken with mashed potatoes was good, nothing special. The "best chocolate cake" desert was not the best, but good enough. Again, there was nothing wrong with anything. This is the type of place I would bring clients for a business lunch or dinner. But for date night I'd probably look for something with a more fun or unique atmosphere. I don't have any complaints but we've eaten at a few much better places in Lexington and while it was fine, there just wasn't anything here we'd come back for. read more

The only reason they get a 4 star and not a 5 star are those little things that make a restaurant incredible vs great. We started with a bottle of wine at the bar while we waited on our table. The bartenders were on point. When we moved to our table, the service was great! Kelly was outstanding. The Caesar salad, typical, nothing spectacular. The prime rib and mashed potatoes, outstanding! The carrot cake is huge and oh so tasty. So the little things - the hostess expected me to cart my bottle of wine to the dining room. Ummm, no. The bar tender was gently trying to help her understand but she didn't understand. The Caesar salad was overdressed and was Kraft style parmesan cheese. When we entered the hostess stand had 3 people behind it, there was a stroller and two adults in front of the stand. None of the hosts recognized people entered behind the stroller and company. Just those little things... love the ambience, the food, the servers and bartenders. It is great! read more

I have a swallowing disorder and get choked so I have to drink warm bottle water and hot tea in order to not get choked while eating so I took a bottle of water in and I was told I could not bring it in even when I told the sever I had a medical issue so the food manger came to our table and said I couldn't bring it in I would contaimate ! Ask how and then she said it was the Health Dept regulation which I knew wasn't true since I eat at other restaurants and not a word about bringing in my water and I called the Health Dept and was told they did not have such regulation !! The food manager had a attitude problem !! I am a senior 71 years old so maybe she doesn't like old people with eating disorders! I complained to the home office in Nashville and no one ever got back with an apology so I won't be going back and I've let all my senior friends know how I was treated. read more

This used to be one of our favorite places to eat...until tonight. We arrived for dinner and had our 8lb service dog with us. We travel a lot and have never had a problem taking her to any restaurant anywhere across the US. We were recently at Jeff Ruby's in Cincinnati which is a MUCH nicer restaurant and were treated with the utmost respect. Tonight we were seated at a booth in the bar where we have never sat before. There was a wait for another table which was fine. We were greeted by a manager named Dan. He informed us that if our dog was a service dog, she needed to be on the floor and we could not hold her. She is an emotional support dog who is also a rescue. She is in the national registry for service dogs. She has been trained and never makes a peep. She is a chihuahua with short hair. She sits in my lap or beside me in the booth. Tonight we were told she could not do that. Dan said we had to put her in the floor. Unfortunately that was not acceptable to us so we left. Maybe Kentucky will catch up with the rest of the world in 20 years or so. Until then, we will be eating elsewhere. Heading to Malone's now. The food is better and the management is much nicer and accommodating. read more

We have given the new J. Alexander's two tries so far--one dinner and one lunch. I would rate it average, a good restaurant, good not great. The food, service and drinks are all satisfactory to good. But, it is over-priced, IMO. I did not know it was a chain, but now that I know that, it makes sense to me. Some chains have the "wow" factor when they open, and then become disappointing (Bone Fish, case in point). I have to say, for the price, I probably would not return. We had wonderful service, and we appreciated that. It certainly does not have much of a unique factor. read more

We are big fans of J. Alexander's. We go there because we can always expect excellent food and great service. However, this past weekend we went and the food was very mediocre. Service was great as usual but they never asked how our food was. I ordered a new item on the menu, fish tacos, and they had no flavor. My husband had a burger that was over cooked and lacked flavor as well. I have heard the same from friends as well. I hope this was a one time thing. Amazing! Cocktails were delicious and worth the money because they are good size and very strong! I had one of the specials, filet medallions in a Madeira sauce, and loved it. The Alex is what my mom loved and I stopped by to pick one up for her for dinner from the bartender and have a glass of wine while I waited when I was promptly told by the bartender (in all seriousness) that they do not do to-go orders when they're busy. LMAO! I don't expect to be lectured by wait staff. I won't return. Lex has WAAAAY too many options for food. Came for Mother's Day. Had a 4 pm reservation, waited for about 10 minutes to be seated for some odd reason. We were the only 2 people in the entry area. LOTS of well dressed workers at the door and restaurant not full (off hour for dinner, I get it). The Food: Had the smaller cut Prime rib. LMAO! Laughing at all the people raving about their Prime rib. It was just so-so. It was cooked perfectly and the au jus in the little dinner-style coffee cup was yummy and made for a cute presentation on an otherwise bland looking plate. Beef itself was under seasoned and was definitely NOT Prime beef. More like Choice. I guess most people nowadays don't know the difference. Prime rib you can cut with just a fork. THIS is not it. The mashed potatoes were tasty BUT were very, VERY heavy...dense...gluey and that worsened at the plate sat in front of me. Mashed potatoes should be fluffier. These had a noticeable "sheen" to them after they cooled at the table. Maybe they're loaded with a ton of butter. IDK. Like I said, they tasted good, but were soooo heavy and after they got that "sheen" to them looked...just odd. The Alex said was a standard salad but very big portion. The vegetables had a nice chop so that there was a good balance of flavor between them and the lettuce. I didn't taste blue cheese in the blue cheese dressing. It was used sparingly, which I loved. I hate a salad swimming in dressing (Red Lobster....I'm talking to you). Now to the dessert. I'm never a sweets person but the server charmed me into trying the carrot cake. Boy, am I glad she did! It was the superstar of the meal! It was square and warm...and moist...no...almost "wet", but not soggy. A thick pour of warmed cream cheese frosting was atop. I'm not normally a cream cheese frosting person because it's too heavy, but this had a nice light consistency. I'm going to dream about that dessert tonight, no doubt! Service: Mostly excellent. Our server was a very friendly lady who made sure we were always taken care of. For the love of all that's holy I will NEVER understand the SECOND you sit down someone asking what you'd like to drink AND if you want an appetizer. ????? I just sat down! Get me my wine/cocktail...I won't pick up the menu until I have had that. I get it places like Olive Garden or Red Lobster where they're there to quickly turn-over tables, but I expect a wee bit more from a higher-end chain. They also have A LOT of food runners and there is a failure in training their staff because every time my mom and I were brought something, our drink, our salad, our entree and finally our dessert it was placed in front of the wrong person. This is just a critique, I don't mean to make it a complaint, but there must be a better way to communicate to the runners what goes where...and we were only 2 people. Decor: Not my thing. Oh it's nice. All dark woods and black leather. I didn't realize that 'look" was still in. Heavyhanded is the word I would use to describe it. People are going on and on about how expensive it is/looks don't know much about decorating. It's not high end, beautiful wood paneling you'd find in a 100 year old mansion and all of the accent pieces are (and look) inexpensive. I personally find that kind of decor very impersonal and cold...uninspired...sort of office-like. By contrast the day before I had lunch for the first time at Honeywood by Ouita Michael. It was VERY nice. Very light and airy and inviting. Someone looks like they actually took time in making decisions on how it should look and feel. Menu: It's a meat heavy restaurant with an uninspired menu...steak, fried chicken, ribs. Limited in their fish selections and no pasta if there's a vegetarian in your group. I get it...they refer to themselves as a "steak house". Whatever. If you want a real quality steak house go to Tony's...or Malone's...or even Merrick Inn (who STILL has THE BEST Prime Rib in Lexington bar none!). It was ok. I can't say it was worth $100 for 2 people considering the quality of food. I think I went in expecting more Capital Grille type high-end chain and instead it's really more Outback...but without the 80's vibe. They bill themselves as a classic-style steak house...no. If you want that you have better options (for a little more money) in Lexington (see above in my review). If you want an "ok" steak for a better price and don't care about sleek decor that attracts posers who don't know what really know what good food is just go to Outback or Texas Roadhouse (their Prime Rib is every bit as good for $16 bucks). read more

55 minutes. We were told 55 minutes. Then everyone else in the 60 minutes we waited that didn't have a reservation was told 55 minutes. Every. One. Coincidence? After 40 minutes a young lady that worked at the front came and asked our name again. But nothing happened. We then noticed that two other "55 minute" couples that came in after us were seated before us. In the restaurant defence, they were dressed better than us. At an hour I went up to the front desk to ask them nicely how we can get that privilege. I honestly was trying to find out. We were on a scouting mission to find a place to have my wife's mother birthday dinner. The front people seemed confused and then i just said they were taking too long to seat us and we had to leave if we couldn't be seated now. They never tried to stop us. Just blank stares. I'm not mad, just disappointed that we can't trust them on making a big decision like a 75th birthday party of 12 or so. World of Beer came to our hunger rescue tonight. Be better and less obvious. My food (french dip) was only luke-warm, but otherwise delicious---and I was too hungry to ask for it to be re-heated. I met a friend for a late lunch. It was about 3:30 on a Wednesday. I asked for a soda water. The bartender handed my friend a bottle of some fancy carbonated water. I said that I'll just take mine from the soda gun. She said they didn't have that. Then she said they did but she wasn't allowed to serve it. Hmmm. What a total joke. I told her to give me a minute and I'd think about what i wanted. She opened a bottle and set it down with a glass in front of me. I didn't refuse it. I ordered a salad. It was extremely underwhelming. I was extremely disappointed in every aspect of the entire visit. The bartender had no other patrons at her bar except for one guy drinking a bottle of beer. When it was time to pay, my friend and i paid separately. She told us when she took the cards that she'd probably get them mixed up because they looked alike. She did. Of course. I have no idea how this incompetent person was hired as a bartender. This was my third visit to J Alexander's and I've tried very hard to like it. I just cannot. I wouldn't go back if it were free. I even saved some guys life on my first trip. He was choking on a piece of steak. Not a single member of the staff ever even stopped what they were doing to help. I am a frequent customer of J Alexander's at The Summit. My visit tonight was the worst experience I have ever had in an upscale restaurant. 2 women with a small dog in a stroller were allowed to eat in the restaurant. I am not a dog hater, I have a dog, however, I would NEVER bring my dog in a restaurant and allow it to stay there while I dined. This is not a restaurant that is lacking in high prices or fine dining. This is a restaurant that one goes to for a nice meal, great service, and the expectation that there are NOT animals sitting within any distance of where I am expecting a nice dinner. I do not know if this was a "Service" animal however, I don't normally see "Service" animals in strollers being pushed by elderly women. I find this reprehensible and absolutely disgusting when it comes to a public restaurant such as J. Alexanders. We do not know if the animal has fleas or ticks or anything that would jump, fly, land, in my food or anyone else. The thought that they fed the dog from plates later served to other patrons is beyond my ability feel safe to ever dine there again. We asked for the manager, he was unapologetic and offer no apology for this incredible indiscretion. He did offer to train the hostesses better on determining if the customers were bringing in dogs or babies. Horrible experience, will not return. read more

Pleasantly surprised by the diversity of the menu and the atmosphere. Even though the house was packed, we could converse comfortably among our party. The service was courteous and prompt. Thought I would stop in one night and try the Cesar salad. I opted for a booth in the pub which is really nice and was greeted by my waitress Bre. She took my order and that was pretty much the last time I saw her, because she was busy on her phone in front of the register. The waitress (Brannen) that brought me my food and actually asked if I would like some bread with it, I didn't even realize that was an option, she talked to me and explained more about their menu made me feel like she was glad I was there. Now mind you this was early on a Thursday night and the pub area was not busy. At the end Bre didn't even bring my check and as I was leaving I noticed that someone else ended up picking it up for her and handing it to her. Gorgeous atmosphere really good food. They Angus steak burger was fabulous. The warm pimento cheese is so good. Service is super attentive almost to the point of being too attentive. They do seem a little too anxious to bring you a fresh drink before you actually finish the one you're drinking, and a little too anxious to clear the dishes from the table before you're actually done eating. Can't say either of those things are a bad thing and I would rather have that than the alternative. The rainbow trout is really good. Keylime pie while not great, is very tasty and refreshing. Plus, another nice feature of this restaurant is during happy hour throughout the week they serve complimentary pimento cheese with chips. Prices seem to be pretty fair or at least comparable to other restaurants of this caliber read more

Eh....it was ok. Despite having a reservation, that I booked a week in advance, we still had to wait 20 minutes for a table. We got the deviled eggs as an appetizer and they were very good. The service was ok. We saw 3 different waitresses and we felt very rushed. People were constantly coming and taking things from our table which was annoying. My crab cakes were good. However my fiancé's steak was cold and not cooked how he asked it. Also the menu said it came with mashed potatoes and they brought a baked potato. I wasn't too impressed and I wouldn't recommend it. I would rather go to Tony's and pay more money for a good meal and a good steak. read more

And why put a water bottle to refill your water if every server stops by to top off the 1/4 inches you just drank? Hoping that a less than stellar review will be more informative than all the five star reviews given. The Summit is overrated in general but this restaurant has a very nice patio, cool inside and great attentive service. The food is pretty good, but I was surprised at how unhealthy most of our dishes were. I chose the trout on special over a steak because I thought trout sounded healthier and more refreshing on a warm summer day. Should have gotten the steak - I'm sure the calories in this dish exceeded any calories from a steak and far less healthy ones at that. Could hardly find the trout under all that breading. The trout once the breading was pushed away was good fish, but not what I was thinking of when I think of trout. The breading must have been drenched in butter to hold the amount on the fish together. The bed of rice that came with the trout ditto seemed to be drenched in butter. Yes, tasty, but left me feeling vaguely sick from all the butter. My son ordered ribs and got mashed potatoes rather than fries. About a half a stick of butter was melted on top of the potatoes. Ribs had little meat on them, not what I would have expected from baby back ribs. I do like this place and if I was back at the Summit, would go again, but warning people to ask the server more details about the dishes before ordering (unless you think eating tons of butter with all your food is an A+ experience). Stopped in after seeing them here on Yelp. Don't listen to reviewers who say you need to dress up. The staff was extremely nice, and attentive to us, and they didn't make us feel like we should have been in our Sunday best for a Monday late lunch. Although, the restaurant is very nice, and if it was dinner time, I could see how some might feel uncomfortable. All that being said- don't let your clothes keep you from enjoying their amazing food! The calamari is some of the best I've ever had, and their wood fired pizzas are so delicious. The portions are huge, and when I ordered a soup as a starter I thought it would be a small cup, but it was a big bowl! The appetizer of calamari was enough for an entire table. When we were walking in an older gentleman suggested that we try the carrot cake, as it was the best he had ever had. Despite being so full, we ordered the recommended carrot cake to share. It was served warm, and was the softest cake I've ever had! Still ended up taking over half of it to go. We had never eaten here, and never would have known it was a chain based on their excellent quality. read more

Came to this restaurant with family and had a great time! We started with the deviled eggs which were amazing, and I grew up having tried what I thought was every variation. These had just enough kick to be different. Atmosphere was upscale but not stuffy. Wait staff worked like a well oiled machine. I had prime rib and it was cooked to perfection. Side salad comes with this and I could have made a meal of it alone, lots of carrots and toppings, not just lettuce on a plate. I had the Kiawah dressing which is a variation of thousand island. Very nice as I like a heavier dressing. My father in law had the salmon and came with an orzo side that was enough for two people to share. He said it was delicious and I could see it was very flaky and well cooked. Hubby had ribeye and he ate every bite, and the baked potato as a side was huge as well. I regret we did not have room for dessert but there is always next time. This is a pricier restaurant but I left feeling like we had been treated well, had good food and an overall great experience. Definite birthday or special occasion restaurant. Gentleman sitting next to us was celebrating a birthday and there was cake and singing, which I thought was a nice touch. One last thing, we didn't have drinks but there was a nice selection of cocktails that I am sure would have been top notch. read more

Eight (8) senior women went for dinner here tonight (10/4/17) and had a marvelous time, mostly because we had the most incredibly good server named Shelby who was restaurant and bar knowledgeable and made amazing recommendations about the food and drink available and what was excellent about each dish. She also was spot on about the different wines and we all ordered differently. The food was superb (fillet, beef kebab,salmon, pork loin, crispy chicken) six of us had different choices; the desserts were awesome, especially the carrot cake and key lime pie. Shelby handled the billing, which got complicated, without a problem and we all left feeling we had found a new best restaurant--which is really an accolade in the Lexington area. We hope to go back soon and will look for a night when Shelby is working. Thanks, gal. P.S. Here's hoping that J. Don't go if you have any food allergies whatsoever. They will do nothing to accommodate you. Having celiac disease, I know how big a pain the whole gluten thing is--trust me, I know--I've lived with it for 15 years. I set expectations low and try to be prepared. Surely a higher end steakhouse can accommodate. So we called ahead and they assured us they had many, many options on their menu. When browsing the menu, there were a few options I was pretty sure could be easily prepared gluten free. Then the manager came over. She flatly stated that "nothing" was gluten free. No recommendations, nothing. But when we would ask about things that appeared obviously gluten free, she would state that they couldn't verify where the ingredients were housed when in a warehouse before they reached the restaurant and thus they were probably contaminated. Okay? They kept saying over and over that they take allergies very seriously and thus nothing was gluten free. Well when taking allergies seriously solely means accepting no responsibility for anything you serve and recommending against everything on your entire menu, you're doing a disservice to your customers. I've never been to a place that was so stubbornly unhelpful. And look--if you don't have options, just say so when we call ahead to find out. I don't go to Pizza Hut expecting to be able to eat anything there. But it's pretty embarrassing to try to treat your family to a nice meal out, only to have to pay for drinks and leave for another restaurant. We definitely won't be back. That being said, our server was very sweet and apologetic, and the atmosphere was nice. read more

We visited last night with a group of friends. The service was just not great. We started at the bar, which was not very busy, only 8 people sitting at the bar included us. There were 5 wait staff behind the bar, It took forever to get their attention that I would like to order a glass of wine. They were all standing around talking to each other and not paying attention to the customers. Once the rest of our party arrived we sat at the table. In the beginning the waitress was fine, not overly happy but fine. She took our orders and after a little bit the salads came out. I had asked for my dressing on the side but it arrived on the salad. It wasn't a big deal I ate it anyways and did not say anything, but worth noting as it added to my poor experience. The food was brought out and my husband's plate was missing. He had received his salad but there was no entrée. The waitress came over after a few minutes and said Oh it will be right out. So I delayed eating my dinner to eat with him, then after several more minutes no dinner, and no wait staff to tell us what was going on, Our waitress did not return to check on us or even to see if we needed anything else and if everyone else food was ok. My Friend next to me ask three times for more water. After 10 mins of still no food the Manager Dan came out, he came off very arrogant. He was like there was a miss communication and the food will be right out. So after another 15 min the food arrived and deliver by Dan, he just sit the food down and was like here you go. No apologizes just here you go and we will comp the food. Dan then left the table. My husband cut into his steak and it was very rare he wanted Medium so after all of that wait the steak was not even cooked right. We then had to wait more time to flag down someone to come to take the steak back to the kitchen. Dan sent out desserts and comp my husbands meal but it was the way he presented himself that was just unappealing. I am super disappointed in our experience and my food was just ok, my mashed potatoes were cold when they were served to me. Not sure we will be returning. And a word of advise be humble when you make a mistake. Everyone makes mistakes and there obviously was a big problem last night. Gluten-free or allergy issues, BEWARE! Wish I could have given Zero Stars. In the 9 years I have had celiac, I have NEVER gone to a similar quality restaurant and not been able to eat a thing off the menu. I was pleased that our server and the manager were brutally honest about the potential for contamination issues in everything on the menu, but amazed that I was told I shouldn't even order a salad at their restaurant because of the potential for gluten. This restaurant was a big disappointment. I appreciate the freshness of their cooking on-sight, but their kitchen should be organized in a way where people with celiac or other allergies should be reasonably assured about the preparation and care of their meal. Note that the salad area is next to the pizza station, so flour is flying around and they felt uncomfortable preparing anything for me to eat. I had a liquid-dinner while my family dined. We were told by a young blonde hostess on 04/16/17 that it would be a 20-25 minute wait. After an hour, we went up to inquire about where we were in the seating process as we had hypoglycemic children. This same young blonde told us that there were a few tables for 5 that had already paid, but they wouldn't get up and leave. I proceeded to go to the section she had identified on the seating chart, and only saw customers that were just being served their food or had just been seated. Another man came up and inquired about his seating, and this young blonde told him it had only been 10 minutes since he asked for a seat. This guy was like, no way it has only been 10 minutes!. I saw several vacant booths open and no one was taking the initiative to get those seats filled nor did the young blonde allow us to take one of the booths. I believe they need to have a more seasoned experienced hostess working up front. She obviously did not know how to run things. After over an hour, we had to just leave and go to a restaurant that is managed better! read more
