First, this review in no way reflects on our server, Morgan. She handled our group of 10 at a family birthday gathering with pure professionalism. I do not understand the no reservation for over 4 people. We had 10, some of which drove over an hour to attend. To be seated at 2 different tables was ridiculous. 6 at one table and 4 in a booth. It was like we 4 were shunned to the kids table. We missed the interaction with fellow guests and blocked from most of the celebration. On our way towards the exit, one of our party noticed at least one long table full of diners in the main area. They must have been special. Food is good but no where near the hype. The ambiance at J.Alexander's is probably one of its best selling points. Dim, with candles on the tables and walls, gentle music pumping and a rustic yet simple decor. This lace is an excellent date night destination. I've never been disappointed by my meal at J.Alexander's and this visit was no different. Since I'm on keto, my outings were limited to steak, roasted chicken, or salad. I opted for salad with grilled chicken. It was very good, awesome ranch dressing and juicy chicken. So we ordered burgers tonight from J. Alexander's via carry out as a splurge. Four cheeseburgers, medium cook, various toppings with three sets of fries and a baked potato. We arrived at the restaurant at the stated pick up time, and my wife went in and immediately returned with our order, so the food was ready as expected. Unfortunately that was the best part among a litany of issues that weren't discovered until returning home: *All of the burgers were rare. Not even medium rare. Rare. My wife's looked very much like tartare on the inside. *My wife ordered the baked potato as a side. While she received the onions, cheese, and sour cream to dress a baked potato, she received french fries as her side with the burger. *We specifically ordered pickles on my son's burger, and there were none. For the price of the food from this establishment, we expect that these errors don't exist. Next time we will select a different option. read more

Excellent experience overall with delectable food and top-notch service. The only reason I knocked off a star is that the wait times for walk-ins were typically over an hour to hour thirty anytime from 4pm on even on weekdays. HOWEVER, because of the long wait our servers comped an appetizer (got the queso and it was 10/10 and I'm from Texas). While the food here is great the real stars are the servers which will make the experience exceptional. Between our main server, drink server, and food server everyone stopped to engage in conversation and provide useful insight on what to get. When another member of my party noted that her chicken platter was slightly burnt albeit still good, they immediate brought out another, properly cooked meal, free of charge and rapidly. They waited just the right amount of time before checking with you if you're ready to order, we always received drink refills long before we needed a refill. We had a spinach queso, it was good with good flavors. I picked the steak brazzo as the main meal and it was really good. Cooked exactly like I wanted it, the mashed potatoes that came with it was excellent and it wasn't lacking anything. We finished the meal with a carrot cake, that must have been one of the best carrot cakes I've had! Ken and I always say this place has the best of everything, but we also always get the same meal. Spinach queso app. Salad (regular for me + ranch and Caesar for him) with croissant rolls (you need to request these or you won't get them), Next up, steaks (filet for me and strip for him, or sometimes we get crazy and order the prime rib end cut - fab). I substitute whatever potato side I'm supposed to get with their fresh veg (which has been haricot verts a couple times, but truly delish heirloom tomato slices this last time). They have the best dirty martini I have ever had, complete with blue cheese stuffed olives. Did I mention that they serve the drink with a sidecar... of another drink!!! Two martinis!! (so why do I often order two? OK, so Ken drives home after we eat here...). I think it costs around $10... maybe $13. So worth it. Impeccible service. You have a waiter assigned to your table, but the whole staff in that area rotates through your table. Friendly, very knowledgable (big pet peeve of mine when the staff doesn't even eat there! here, the staff has tried all the dishes so they can honestly answer all your questions). They do call ahead seating, which I highly recommend, especially on weekends. You feel super cool breezing through the door and past the teeming masses waiting for a table to the host counter, only to be seated promptly (try not to look back and smile at the masses) or receive a buzzer and get seated 10 minutes later (also try to keep gloat face to a minimum). This is my husband's favorite restaurant. It's expensive (we drop about $120 for the two of us) so we reserve it for special dates. Love it. read more

It came to our attention that amongst the cluster of pretty good places along this stretch of the Northville/Livonia border that there's still a couple places we hadn't been. This time we set our sights on J. Alexander's. I set a reservation for 5:00 and arrived to be seated immediately. It's dark in here, with a rustic feel and an intimate atmosphere even though it's very open and it's a pretty big place. A bit noisy but tolerable. Our server appeared within a minute of being seated. She took drink orders and even waited while we chose an appetizer. We went for the Mexican Spinach Con Queso. She came back a minute late with water and another minute later with our drinks. We were ready to order when she brought drinks so she took our order and she was off. She ordered the Filet Mignon, and for me the New York Strip, we were feeling carnivorous tonight. Our appetizer was very good, and plenty of it. Her Filet came with a baked potato loaded with goodies, and she said it was very good! While my New York Strip came with what they call NYO Mac and Cheese. The NYO is Not Your Ordinary. . .very good as well, whatever that baked crust was on top was something you could have all on it's own! If I didn't know any better, I would say that they had cameras monitoring the table and knew when to bring our entree's because they didn't come too soon and we didn't have to wait, someone took our empty appetizer dishes and a few moments later our entree's were there, I say it was perfect timing. Our server checked on us in just the right increments of time, not too often and she never disappeared. I do have to say that I believe there are waitress schools that differ in technique, I think there is at least one that has a program that teaches how to make sure that one must stalk the table and show up right when someone takes a bite and ask how everything is. Our steaks were both cooked perfect and I can't say anything negative about J. Alexander's. I would definitely recommend it, though it was a bit pricey, however, every bit of our visit was very high quality! I visited J. Alexander's recently with a friend for my birthday, and we had a lovely experience. When I first walked in, I was quite struck with the beauty of the restaurant. The gorgeous brick walls and wood ceiling, the high ceilings, and the huge interior really show that they will spare no expense on details and customer experience. I was also impressed with the menu - lots of delicious looking options and many budget friendly choices as well as the higher priced steaks and dinners they're known for. I got a steak burger with fries, my friend ordered the ahi tuna burger, and we both ordered key lime pie for dessert. We were both very pleased with our meals. My burger was perfectly balanced with meat, bread, toppings, and the quality of beef was top notch. And I will dream of that key lime pie as long as I live. Our service was exceptional as well. My friend and I were there quite a while just talking and catching up, and we never felt rushed or left alone. Our water glasses were always full, and when we finally ordered, our meals came out incredibly fast. All in all, it was a perfect lunch with great food, perfect service, and a gorgeous setting. We arrived about 5ish to be seated Booth-Side within minutes of arriving; with smiles! In a nicely -- not so dim area!....Win-win! For the dinning visual. I tried to take a risk with the menu and wanting something different...But why do that?! For starters I ordered JAlex's Famous and Indulging "Key-Lime Pie" to be savored on 'Phurst' -- and my cannot get enough of Broccoli sauteed in their awesome garlic-butter sauce [highly recommend] with Salmon and a loaded potatoe! Also ordered , 2-Steak and Fries; prepared Medium! If you are paying attention I did reference the 2 of us....where was he going to put it?....it was a sight..ha! Even had it with Rounds-of-Coke to rinse it down. -- Dessert; almost an empty plate [that is all]! ; } Wait did I forget sumthing!¿! Dinner was prepared perfect; especially, the Salmon! This is the first place where I've eaten and their Caesar salad is bomb! They even have house made croutons that go with the salad! I ordered the Steak Brazzo cooked until medium well with a side of mashed potatoes! My uncle ordered their Prime Rib. I usually order this entree when I do visit this restaurant, but wanted to try something different. He also had a wide of mashed potatoes. The service was fast and prompt. Our waiter was great! It was crowded and the bar is first come first serve. There were guests that happened to be black formed a line to wait for the bar. As we were getting to walk to the bar, a white couple flew in by everyone and took our seat as we were heading to the bar. We were waiting for bar seats for 20 minutes. The white patrons were rude and obnoxious when we told them we were all waiting. They started cursing at us and the manager did absolutely nothing. Great place for a work lunch. This location has great staff and they are very friendly. Food is very consistent. I got the chicken tenders and fries because honestly they are always great. went to J. Alexanders in Livonia with my wife and mother. we ordered a steak burger well-done, some chicken tenders and some fish, with a spinach dip appetizer. My mother ordered some orange juice and my wife wanted a sprite in a to-go cup. The spinach dip was watery and was more like soup than dip. my burger was closer to burnt than well-done, and was much smaller than I expected for what I was paying (the sandwich was almost all bread). and the chicken tenders were bland. the service was even worse. The waitress did not have any silverware or napkins available for us and we had to ask her to get them for us, and she seemed to be either in a rush, and/or had a problem with serving us when we asked her for them. If it was the restaurant's policy to not have flatware and napkins available, we did not know, and no other restaurant we had ever eaten at had such a policy. the waitress forgot my mother's orange juice, and when asked, gave her grapefruit juice instead. and she also brought my wife's drink in a glass and had to be reminded that she wanted a take-home cup. It seemed like we were being rushed, despite arriving at 8:00 and the kitchen closing at 9:00 with plenty of other guests dining without being hurried. This was our first time eating at this restaurant, and we did not get a good first impression. We won't be back. read more

I have been to this J. Alexander's location at least 20 times and I have both good and bad things to say about it. I'll begin with the bad. Last night, a group of nine of us went to J's and there were several mishaps that blew our mind: First, one of the gals in our party ordered a Ciroc on the rocks. She finished it. Then, she ordered another. The waitress responded, "We don't have Ciroc. We only have Grey Goose." Strange, because the first time she ordered a Ciroc on the rocks, she got it. Never before had she been notified that J's didn't carry Ciroc. And she had ordered Ciroc on the rocks at J's many times before without any notice that they would sub Goose for it. Maybe this isn't a big deal, but you'd think the waitress would disclose the fact during placement of the first order, not the second. Secondly, another one of the gals in our party ordered a gin and tonic. The gin and tonic came through, but there wasn't a lime on the rim; she had to make a special request for it. Third, there were three duos in our group that ordered carrot cake. Two of the pieces came warm, one of them arrived room temperature. To me, this is a BIG DEAL. VERY, VERY BIG DEAL. Fourth, the cypress salad was not great. Wilted and brown lettuce. Wouldn't pay $15 for it. Perhaps my fifth and final complaint is not J's fault, but mine, since it involved a downgrade by choice. For my first drink, I ordered the Doppelgänger, a refreshing and flavorful cocktail with Angel's Envy, Disaronno, Luxardo cherry, and ginger beer. No complaint on the cocktail. After finishing my $12 cocktail, I downgraded to a Jack and coke. When I received the tab, I learned that a Jack and coke is more expensive than a specialty cocktail. Fancy that. For the price you pay at J's, I would expect better service and better prices on basic mixed drinks. All that said, J. Alexander's entrees are some of the best you can get. ALEX'S SALAD: While I do believe this salad is overpriced, it is a hearty salad topped with shredded cheddar and bacon, if you like it. STEAKS: A medium or medium-rare filet mignon will melt in your mouth. Their bearnaise sauce that comes with it adds a smooth compliment. Their New York Strip and the Tuscan are other great options. Whatever you do, do not use the term 'well' when they ask you how you want it cooked. Get it bloody. HYDE PARK: A simple chicken sandwich. Can't go wrong with it. FRIES: Shoestring fries are always a helpful side. DESSERTS: If you have a sweet tooth, you MUST save space for carrot cake. The cake is delectable and the cream cheese icing is sweet, rich, and heavy. Come in with a thick wallet, especially if you are looking to have a steak, seafood, or drinks. It is possible to eat here on a budget if you stick with sides and soups and you resist the temptation to order one of their cocktails. Overall, overpriced, and for a place that typically provides good service, it has taken a turn for the worst. read more

The wait time for this location is crazy on a Saturday night. We waited over an hour for 2 people. The wait is worth it because the food is delicious. Service is always excellent as well. This is one of my "go to" places. I LOVE their prime rib and usually up the size to 16oz (so I have a little lunch for the next day). Nobody serves prime rib on a regular basis anymore. When a restaurant runs it as a special / it's usually not that good. J Alex knows how to slow cook it to perfection! Met my friends here today for lunch and had the haddock with mango papaya chutney (on special) - which was great. We started with the grilled artichoke appetizer - easy to share and delicious - and a Caesar salad (which they split for us). But today the highlight was the service .., Big shout out to Kade!! The hostess gave us free appetizers and apologized for the wait, which I didn't think was necessary but I did appreciate the gesture.
