We have been here a number of times and have never been disappointed. It is located across the parking lot from the Container Store and Borders Books(not sure if that store is still open). Went here for a friend's B-day last night. Food was decent, but service was on point!!! Our server was on top of all the normal sh*t like water refills and pouring the wine, but even little things like, when my friend went to the bathroom, she took his old napkin and replace it with a new one. When he used his knife to scoop up the salad we were splitting, there was a new knife before the entrees arrived... little things that nobody (except me) would ever notice until the moment you realize you need a knife and you cant find your server, which I seriously doubt has ever happened here. I hope management appreciates their incredible service staff... Food was pretty good, but not outstanding. My friend had the scallops that come with this amazing couscous (the big pearl ones, not the little sand ones), and I had the pecan crusted trout off the special menu. It was a little overcooked and didn't really flake off the skin, but the flavors were good, it had some yummy dijon sauce. We got a small caesar and alex salad to start, they were freaking HUGE. And really good, lettuce was cut the right size and the salads were neither over- nor under-dressed. For salads, 2 entrees, and bottle of wine, the bill was a little over $100 before tip. Very good veggie burger! A lot of flavor and a big portion.. So come hungry. Fries that come with it are delicate and delicious as well.. Only downside is that they don't have too many vegetarian options as a meal.. This place is solid. Service is extremely attentive. The refills just keep coming. Food is consistently good. Their cheeseburger is outstanding, better than at some of the now trendy burger bars opening everywhere. Fries are thin, matchstick almost. We eat here frequently. If the ahi tuna burger is on the specials of the day, try it, its outstanding. Other favs, chips and salsa, fish sandwich, prime rib french dip. Wine list is decent. Some of the best food yet worst service I've ever had. I tried the prime rib; although it came out more rare than I asked for and had to be sent back to be finished, it was also some of the most tasteful beef I have ever tasted. Unfortunately, the service is unimaginably bad. For one thing, you have to ask for bread. This place was just okay! It was my 34th birthday and I was getting treated to dinner but I didnt want to break nobody pockets either. So, I asked a friend and she said it was nice so I deceided on it. The decor is nice and sexy kinda but it is very dark and romantic sort of a date night restaurant. Thats cool and all but I had my kid there as well and she dont like the dark , let alone while eating ! Man,can I see what I am eating please!!! So anyway we got the prime rib which was tasteless and a mound of potatoes which needed some butter ,sour cream salt , pepper something! My kid was complain about her fries being the "shoestring" kind she like fries and she don't play! Then to top it all off my friend raved about some kind of sweet crossiants they bring to the table. guess what, we didnt get any and I waited to see if she would bring them but we were done with the apperitzers and still nada! so. I am reading the negative reviews of J's and not understanding. This place is as solid as its gigantic brick building. I frequently hosted business lunches here in the past. Everything is always good, always. They never have an off day. I am impressed with them every time I go. The burgers are deicious and my button busting favorite is the Rattlesnake pasta. The quality & taste is comparable to Lowry's in CA, but at a fraction of the price. Had some left-overs for the next day, which tasted just as good microwaved - amazing! The steak gets a 4.0 of 5.0. This place has been around forever and still manages to remain relevant in the Oakbrook area. Went for a casual lunch. They've got a great selection of burgers. Cyrus was our server. He did a good job overall, however, we did make the mistake of not checking our bill hard enough and he managed to charge us for a $7 beer that was not ordered. -:(. Prime rib is out of this world! One of my local fave restaurants... been coming here for years. The prime rib is a must. Love the warm honey glazed croissants! The prime rib sandwich is totally worth it... 8-9 ounces of prime rib goodness sandwiched in between two buttered and toasted halves of sub bread and a cup of au jus for dipping and a side of your choice... the parmesan mac and cheese is delish though heavy. $17 and still had leftovers! J Alexander's is easy to forget about- it's located by the Borders store. But when you remember it, you gotta go! The mashed potatoes are a plate full with some skins and garlic goodness. Stopped in for lunch today and had a wonderful experience. Ordered salad in order to save room for their highly rated desserts and I am very happy with my decision to do that! The salad was great with their champaign vinagarette dressing. But the best part of the whole restaurant was their carrot cake! Served warm and was so good. I just had lunch here yesterday. I know that the staff has been trained to be attentive, but sometimes the attentiveness turns into harassment. If people are having a business meeting, give them a little space to talk. The main reason for coming to the restaurant is business, the second reason is lunch. Please remember that. I ordered a rotisserie chicken salad with dressing on the side. The dressing was all over the salad when it came to the table. It is very disappointing when your guest is served hot food and she feels as though she has to wait and let her food get cold while an order is remade. I ordered the Cowboy Ribeye and side of Beets. Here is the Cons. The Steak was so chewy and tough I could not eat it. My hubby even took a bite to confirm. Was a very bad steak for $38.00. The food here is outstanding. My family has been going here for a while, as kids we used to pick this place for our birthday dinners when our dad said "pick any place you want!" I was there yesterday with some business associates, and here is why they get five stars: At first, the silverware was wrapped in white cloth napkins. Our hostess saw that all 4 of us were wearing dark pants, and brought us all black napkins. If you've ever worn dark pants, and put a white cloth napkin on your lap, you'll be covered in the tiniest pieces of white lint that are impossible to brush off. So we were in there tonight. The service was okay... kinda spotty at times... The food was fine but they need to learn how to season products. I ordered the Filet and normally with a steak you'll throw a little salt and pepper on it and then throw it on the grill. But there was none of that... it was just beef. And with the broccoli... they said that it was with olive oil and garlic... which is fine ( I love it that way when tossed with a little pasta)... but the broccoli was under~steamed and overly oily and seemed to have raw garlic on it... blech! I sent it back because it was just horrible... they sent out a new "plain" broccoli and it was still way under~steamed. My husband's ribs were great.... but they could work on the coleslaw... not enough acid. The Key Lime Pie was great.... and so were our beverages. I've been here two or three times, but until my last visit, it was just for a drink at the bar. Service has always been exceptional, but I am not sure if that's normal or not, since the friend I go with is a regular and knows the staff quite well, but I choose to think they treat everyone that well! On this visit we had a late lunch in the middle of the week. We were seated right away and our waitress (Jen) was at the table for drink orders immediately. She was really sweet and service was quick. We both ordered salads and our food came super fast. The Redwood Salad (Rotisserie chicken, pecans, avocado, tomatoes, bacon, cheese, croutons and ranch dressing) was delicious! I saw a few tiny bits of pecan, but it was honestly not noticeable in the flavor. My preference would be to either leave them out completely, or add pecan halves, so you can actually taste them. The croutons were surprising -- they were not crunchy like I am used to on restaurant salads. They were like little cubes of cornbread that had been fried to a golden brown. Biting into them, they had a lovely flavor with a hint of spice maybe?? I am not exactly sure what they are, but they were delicious! This salad is definitely something I would order again. The lunch portion was big (for me) so I brought half of it home and finished it for dinner. I have no complaints about this place and I'm sure I will be back if I am in the area again! read more

I love this place, because they offer gourmet fresh food at a very moderate price. I saw in another review that someone thought this place was "chainy." I disagree. The three locations in Illinois are all pretty different from another, and the food is really natural- not like you would expect from a chain. The drinks are a bit expensive, but they are really good! Worth the money. The special martini's come with a shooter. The bloody mary's are just alright, but very few places make them to my grossly high standards. The servers are aways awesome. I just dont like it that everyone greets you and says goodbye. I dont need a random server to sat goodbye, maybe just my server and the host. There's always like 8 different people that say good bye. I can't remember ever having a bad meal at J Alexander's. I've eaten at several of their locations in a few different states; their customer service and attentiveness to their guests is outstanding. The food is great too! I love their salads, they have a great cobb salad with their rotisserie chicken and even their house (Alex) salad is yummy. Chicken fingers aren't just for kids 10 and under here. They have the best honey mustard for dipping. If you like burgers, friends that have tried them here never had anything bad to say. As far as appetizers go, the spinach con queso is delish as well as their guacamole. They have a great wine list and their martini's will pack a punch. This Oak Brook location is a little tricky. Weekend nights are usually packed but lunches don't seem to be impossible to get in and out quickly (though I mainly sit in the bar at lunch). I would say that the classy, lodgey-esque decor and the intimate lighting was the best part of J Alexander's. Our server was really nice but she was a little over the top and did not have a good sense of when and when not to come and interrupt our deep conversations. The food was pretty good, nothing extraordinary but not bad. I was a tad disappointed in the mac and cheese, but I also just had high expectations, which I usually do when a " fine dining" restaurant carries it on their menu. The reason I gave this place 3 stars was because, first, the menu is way overpriced. Second, we heard our server offer a free dessert to the table directly next to us because it was their first time there, and hey, guess what! It was my first time there and she did not offer us a free dessert. We actually paid for our dessert, thank you very much. I mean, it's not that big of a deal but at least be a little more hush hush about giving away kinda expensive desserts when the tables nearby can hear everything you are saying - not cool chick, not cool. There was nothing particularly wrong with my experience, but nothing that would differentiate J.Alexander's from any of the better restaurants in the area. Both times we've had to wait a while for our table, which is fine- so make sure you make reservations if it's a weekend. The atmosphere is pretty dark in there, especially in the dining area- big bar and comfortable booths in the bar area. Their menu is just so/so .. Nothing really stood out to me, and what I did order wasn't that impressive either. It's been a while, but from what I can remember - I've had the mac n' cheese, lemon chicken, pasta, and the artichoke appetizer (which is extremely under par- there was hardly any 'meat' on the artichoke, and it's served with a cold, creamy dipping sauce. ..) I wouldn't fight it if I was invited back, but I certainly wouldn't recommend J Alexanders in the future. read more

The past Saturday me and my lady visited this location. The location she likes is now closed (north side). We both had the 12 oz prime rib. It was great. Very well seasoned. The service was good. And the key lime pie was bangin! The sides were ok. The mashed potatoes were dry and flavorless. We shared a side of Mac and cheese was not the same as the north side location. We both had one fork full and left the rest. It tasted more sweet, than savory. Not good for Mac and cheese. The tab was $130 with drinks, appetizer, dinner and dessert.
