Our waiter, his name was Will, he has the kindest heart and was very humble. He deserves a raise and a fist bump. Food options here are always good. I'll always remember my first experience at their Chattanooga location from 14 years ago. It's a good restaurant with really good food. Service Is hit or miss and the inside still gives a higher end vibe but this Nashville location could benefit from an interior update of some sort. read more

J's is heavy in my rotation for good drinks and solid food. We dined in and our service was friendly and quick. The vibes are always right so if you want bar seating with people to chat with it's the perfect spot or seated dining to enjoy a more intimate experience again it's the perfect spot. My chicken was meal was filling and the potatoes were sooo delicious! I had more than enough to take home. We also had the queso and it was the perfect start. The cocktails are always delicious and have the right amount of kick. I would avoid the fruit tea but everything else is chefs kiss and the same with each visit. read more

Great spot to grab a bite! J Alexander's is one of my favorite spots. Love this location on West End. The service is always friendly from the time you enter the door until you leave. They have a great menu with many tasty options from salads, sandwiches, steaks, etc. My favorite is the spinach con queso appetizer. Also, you can't go wrong with any salad. All the food is beautifully plated to add to the appeal of the meal. The inside hasn't changed much. They have a great fully stocked bar/bar area, great wine list and space if you dine alone or in a group. The dining room has ample booths and tables. The inside is a little dark and cozy. They have great seats by the window to get sunlight. The menu options are moderately priced. If you have a sweet tooth, I recommend the carrot cake. Definitely worth a visit. read more

I'm really sad that this is a chain, as I tend to stay away from those. We were staying near Vanderbilt and walked over for drinks and dinner. First, understand that their cocktails are automatically a double. I really enjoyed my Makers Mark and Diet Coke, which even had a dried orange slice. It was perfect. I opted for their Thai salmon special for dinner, but subbed broccoli for the pilaf. The salmon portion was generous and perfectly cooked - I would totally get this again and again! My friend ordered the crab cakes and this was my only sadness: the crab cakes were AMAZING and contained very little filler... I really wished I had ordered them also. The service was friendly and pretty quick for a Saturday evening and the noise level was not too loud to carry on conversations, even in the bar. We returned to one of our favorite places and find that the service continues to deteriorate. We waited 10 mins for greeting, another several for water (which was never refilled) My ahi tuna salad was fine but has less greens and a mountain of the crunchy things. I had to pile them on the side of the plate. Also they serve it with more dressing now so beware. Everyone's food was OK. When our waitress finally returned to prebus and ask about dessert, I wasn't even able to order my coffee or customary chocolate martini before she was gone again. All of our drinks were dry at this point but never refilled. We had even put them all near the edge of the table. So the glasses got taken away. We took it as a sign to go so we did just that. Here on business and got the grilled chicken sandwich. I am very particular about my chicken being on the grill and not the flat top and even explained that to Sidney. She was absolutely amazing I might add. When she asked how it was....It was rubbery. The broccoli was amazing and I told her that; she actually brought me more. This is used to be a great place. Now, I'd give it a 3 TOPS , at the bar. I practically had to beg for service with 3 bartenders discussing the schedule. I ask for water with my glass of wine, which I did not get. They asked if I wanted dinner and I said yes, and they gave me the one napkin, but no silverware. When I finally got to order, I had already finished a glass of wine, and the guy next to me was served drinks, popcorn, and his salad. They knew him. We've been to J. Alexander's before, but this was our first time at the Downtown spot. The place looked great--clean, comfortable, and we were greeted with a smile and seated right away. We were celebrating my wife's birthday, which I mentioned in our Resy reservation and brought up with our server a couple of times. So it was a little disappointing that it wasn't acknowledged at all. On the bright side, the food was fantastic. Our server had great suggestions, and everything we tried was delicious. We all got appetizers and shared the entrée salad--it was huge! Most of us ordered the New York Strip with mac & cheese, and it was spot-on. One person had the burger and really enjoyed it. One thing that surprised us: there was an armed guard at the front door. Not sure what that was about--it didn't affect our meal, but it did feel a little out of place. Overall, we had a great time. Then someone arrived to take our drink order, I ordered a Remy Sidecar with a sugar rim. Drink came with no sugar. STRIKE TWO. I kept the drink without the sugar rim. Drink was good. Then ordered a Prime rib medium rare (MY FAVORITE!!) NO potatoes SUB broccoli. And a house side salad with dressing ON THE SIDE. Salad came with dressing on it and no side of dressing, Salad was decent. Then Prime rib came out. Cooked to medium rare PINK PERFECTION WITH potatoes and NO broccoli. Sadly sent it back they returned it with no potatoes sub broccoli. Perfect! Still hungry and ready for some Prime Rib.....Cut the left side into about 3 pieces, dipped into the au ju took the first bite and it was SOOOOOOO SALTY! STRIKE THREE. Wasn't sure if it was the cut of meat or the au ju that was salty.....IT WAS BOTH. Unfortunately, I could NOT consume such a salty dish for medical reasons..... had to send it back. Now I'm sad. Food was good but they also won't seat you until your party is mostly there even though the table is open. There is no where to wait so you just block the door. After 25 years of loyal dining at J. Alexander's/Redlands Grill, I left more disappointed than I ever imagined possible. The food was still great, but the service was shockingly poor and left me feeling ignored from start to finish. I have been dining at J. Alexander's/Redlands Grill for over 25 years and this was the worst service I have ever experienced. From the moment we were seated, we were ignored. Our server, Sheldon, took far too long to greet us, never offered water, and when I asked for it, it never came. After we ordered drinks and an appetizer, he disappeared. There were no refills and no quality checks. I even had to flag down another server to pour water into my empty fruit tea glass after choking on a tortilla chip. Still, no refills were offered. It felt like Sheldon was purposely avoiding us the entire night. We had to flag down other servers at least six times just to get basic needs met. Food runners stood at the table without placing dishes correctly or clearing space. Twice, salad dressing was placed next to me when one clearly belonged to my sister. When I asked for the General Manager, I was told they were on an "extended lavish vacation," which was unprofessional and unnecessary. A manager came over, but instead of addressing the service issues, she offered to remake our food, which I never complained about, and send us home with dessert. This felt like a quick band-aid to get us out the door, not a solution. We were promised two slices of key lime pie, one slice of chocolate cake, and a deconstructed banana cream pie, but only one key lime pie was brought. The food here is always consistent, but the service on this visit was unacceptable. Being ignored, handed hot plates, and made to feel like an inconvenience is not the J. Alexander's/Redlands Grill I have loved for decades. I truly hope management takes this seriously because this experience was deeply disappointing. read more

Yummy food. Good ambiance, though it was quite dark. I got the surf and turf sushi roll. Although on the menu it just says "filet mignon, crab, cream cheese, and avocado." I was surprised when my order came out with masago on the top. I don't like masago so I had to pick off every piece until I eventually grew tired and just started taking off the entire piece of filet mignon that the masago was resting on. The one consistent is front of house service is always good, I haven't had any issues with the wait staff, management is always around and visible. I will say the thing I would like to see improvement on is attention to detail. My food ticket was loss and I had to bring it to my servers attention that it hadn't came out yet. The two water glasses had lipstick marks on one and lip smudging on the other. The last two times I've been here the kitchen has left me disappointed. Nice look but way too rowdy. We walked in at 6:15 PM on a Thursday. Wanted to sit at the bar but it was really crowded and loud, so we asked for a table. They gave us a booth next to the bar. The rowdiness was hard to believe: if I were the manager, I would have nicely asked these people to tone it down or leave. It wasn't just loud, it was physical. There were two guys wrestling between our table and the bar. We were finally visited by a waiter who didn't seem to care if we were there or not; waited ten minutes for drinks and/or menus to arrive, couldn't hear each other talk, and we just got up and left. I've never done that before, but J. Alexander didn't earn my business. If they want rowdy, noisy people, they can keep them. read more

Love J Alexander's but this and Whitebridge are my two least favorite locations. The last time I was at this location, a man had a seizure and the staff was clueless and froze. The Whitebridge location hosts were so rude we walked out. We have always had a great experience at the Cool Springs location. The food and cocktails are delicious. The ribs, steaks, crab cakes, and cypress salad are some of our favorites. Best carrot cake ever, and I don't even like carrot cake! The service at the CS location is consistently superior. Y'all...we actually go to this location several times a year for work meetings because the food is good, they have a private parking lot, and take reservations. So that should tell you something. The hostess/reservation desk is always kind. However today, I can honestly say I had the BEST service for our lunch meeting with Cam. He went above and beyond the call of duty. We had a lunch meeting with a gentleman from Africa who was not fluent in English. Plus we added two more chairs to our booth which usually only hold six people. Not only did Cam make the table comfortable our party of seven, he took the time to listen to our African guest, serve/be attentive to a VERY full table, and anticipate our needs before we even knew what they were. But when we and a BUNCH of other families arrived, the restaurant just had a regular menu - nothing special - and heavier lunch/ dinner offerings. It has probably been 10 years since I was at a J. Alexander's. Last night's extremely middling and flawed experience will ensure it's another decade before I bother to give them my money again (assuming they even survive that long at this point). Let's get the redeeming things out of the way: the drinks were pretty bulky in size, which helps justify the pricing in most nicer bars like this purports to be. We had a sushi roll, which was also pretty tasty. (We're a couple consisting of a very experienced service industry person and a career marketer, so we do try to be objective, but...) When we first arrived at about 9:30pm, we were told they would be cleaning up the bar in front of two available seats, so we hovered a moment to let them. The initial attempt was lame, and I joked about how it looked like a toddler had sat there before us and I'll let them make another pass at a better wipe-down. Once it was clean, we crammed ourselves into the very tight space provided by their obvious corporate greed level of excessive seating for the amount of available room. We were eventually greeted (not quick enough for a bar packed with 4 bartenders and a standard level of busy on a Friday evening). No water was set down in that greeting - which is just a basic move to leave out. We ordered, and it was mostly ok - except for having our drinks reversed, which turned out to be a sign of things to come. We noticed we were not getting much check-in attention, and the bartenders all seemed much more distracted by doing all their side work, washing glasses, etc... Our bartender never asked for another sale with additional drinks, never asked about dessert (which I was waiting to get a chance to order), etc. Just very aloof. I had to flag her down for a water somewhere along the way. It was just after 10pm, and SUDDENLY, a ton of bright lights came on over the bar like an operating room. No fade in, nothing gradual, just BAM! bright-ass light. Someone mentioned it was closing time, and I asked... and it turns out they close at 10pm. On a Friday night. IN NASHVILLE. I expressed how surprising that was and how we had no idea that was even possible in 2023 in one of America's top destination cities. So much for dessert, then... We never heard any of the massive population of bartenders make a "last call" either. No ask for more food selling, no "hey the kitchen is closing," nothing. Just all of a sudden, bright GTFO lighting at about 10:26pm. Those hours are clearly set by corporate greed. There is no shortage of workers, obviously. This seems like a choice made by people that just don't want to pay the utility bills than to have hours that are more becoming of a world-class city. When we left Nashville almost 3 years ago, we ended up surprised at some of the short hours in Grand Rapids, MI, but understood we came from a bigger, hip place. But to come back and visit and find these pathetic suburban hours at a location in Midtown is really silly. I've attached a photo, as well, of the horrid state of the floor around the bar area. The whole thing looked like a kid's party had just happened. For all the obsession over cleaning and dinking around while not checking on customers, this crew sure didn't care to tidy anything outside the bar. One more thing: I noticed the crowd was heavily skewed toward non-white folks, which I thought was super cool, given that this was one of the whitest places in town all through my youth and earlier adulthood. But given their scandal in 2019, I am wondering if some of these dismissive attitudes toward hospitality and these short hours might be informed by some kind of racial bias in business/management decisions. Anyway. Tipped about $2 due to the salvageable positive of the sushi and drinks, but I'm not sure the crew there deserves any tip at all based on how vastly under-par this was. read more

I hadn't been to a J. Alexander's for over 10 years but our group chose to come here because of location, parking, and ability to make reservations. Food was good, drinks were good, and we thought service was good until our bank notified us that two hours after we left, several fraudulent charges were attempted on the card we used there. Because we hadn't otherwise used it in a while, we knew someone there must have skimmed or taken a picture of it for their own purposes. We called to make JA aware of what had happened and were transferred to a manager who picked up and immediately hung up. Subsequent calls were ignored. We then called the corporate office in Texas who said they'd look into it. I hold out no hope that any action will be taken but because our bank is so great and proactive, we were protected. A quick search tells me the same thing has happened at other JA locations too, so maybe looking into it isn't a strong enough of a response? tl;dr version: food good, fraud bad. The service was good and prompt, the food was cooked to perfection the way we ordered it. The avocado bomb I highly recommend it was delicious. Was a regular customer since 2016. Food still good but today service absolutely terrible. I sat at the bar for many years through Covid they had competent servers who stayed there until this year. I was there a few weeks ago there was still one or 2 familiar faces. Today a whole new crew. Had to ask to order food came had to ask for utensils.wasnt given daily specials. It wasn't crowded. Interesting thing 2 days ago I sat next to someone at Bricktops down the street we both agreed food better at J Alexander's west end but service makes it now almost untenable. Not crowded when we walked in but no plates had been picked up from previous customers and bar not wiped down. A health issue. Please do better. Long term customer. Please bring back the quiche and maybe old staff. Not sure why they made changes but if something was working don't change it, terrible service, Sad to see this happen I'll stick with Bricktops on west end until I hear better reviews on service. read more
