I Overrated It Last Time" I have to admit that the Mac & Cheese, and the French fries are very good. The service was mediocre. The kitchen may not have a clue... Three of us ordered the "Steak Burger"... one medium rare and the other two medium. Delivered was, one medium and two well done. Any short order cook should be able to cook a burger as ordered.. If it were baseball, their average would be pretty good at .333... but they get a failing grade from me. read more

Actually was a pretty regular customer here. My husband and I would have dinner here often. We love the food and loved the service until tonight. Two weeks ago, I made reservations for my husband, my two sons and me for my husband's birthday dinner. It turned out my sister and niece decided to come to town to celebrate my husband's birthday, so I called the restaurant last week to let them know we needed to add two more people to the reservation. I was told that they don't take reservations for more than four people, but that we should go ahead and keep the reservation, come in a little early, then just let the hostess know we had six instead of four and they'd "take care of us". So that's what we did. The place was packed, I will admit that, but we were definitely not "taken care of". We were told it would be anywhere from a 35 - 45 minute wait, maybe more. The manager on staff was kind and polite, but basically, he said there was nothing he could do. We weren't offered drinks or a place to sit in the bar. They knew it was my husband's birthday. Let me start off by saying that I've never liked J Alexander's to begin with. I feel like they are trying way too hard to come across like a fine dining establishment but they fail miserably with the quality of the food and the service. My last visit was no exception. My sister in law loves it here for some reason completely beyond my understanding, so again I was suckered in to meeting here for lunch with her. We walk in and the hostess seats us at a filthy table. There was crumbs and water rings still on the table from the previous patrons. We had them wipe it down. Upon seating I realized that there was cob webs decorating the corner above our heads which I thought was a nice classy touch. I already know I don't care for the food here so I decided to just order the orzo side. It's the least of the evil on that god awful menu. let me take a moment to describe something that I found to rather odd. Our waitress, every time she walked away from our table, would walk as through she was walking towards a boxing ring preparing for the big fight. She was "singing" rap music and throwing punches as though she was battling some imaginary opponent. It was just, off putting to say the least. Our food comes out and one person in our party ordered the baked chicken, only to find it pink in the middle towards the thigh. Obviously undercooked. My orzo tasted like someone spilled a bottle of balsamic on it. It actually took my breath away when I took my first bite. Some of my group were pleased with their food. My sister in law loved her salad, obviously, and my brother in law liked their mac-n-cheese. Way to be J Alexander's, people liked your salad and macaroni and cheese. This review is more about the service rather than the food. The food this evening was , as it usually is,good. One of our party ordered the Alex Salad as an entree. Another of our party ordered Steak and a side salad. Both salads came and the side salad and the dinner salad were the same size, yet the side salad was $5 and the dinner salad was $11. When we ask to speak to the manager, this kid comes over who has been a manager all of two months. He proceeds to explain to us the economics of the restaurant business! Even when told he was losing a customer forever, he continued to drone on about how the restaurant business has changed. Who gives a rat's ass, just correct the problem. I'm sorry to say this place has really gone downhill the last few years. I ordered the roast beef French dip sandwich. At $20, it was way overpriced. The sandwich consisted of a thick French roll, much more bread than meat, and an insane amount of mashed potatoes - enough for a family of four. The beef was cooked rare, to the point of being nearly raw. The au jus looked and tasted like Swanson's beef broth. There were no sides included except for the potatoes, which are cheap to serve. It just seemed like $20 was too much to pay for basically a French roll, canned broth, not much meat and a mountain of mashed potatoes. The atmosphere is still nice, but I won't be coming back here any time soon. I could get the same meal at the cafeteria-style House of Beefcarver for half the price. read more

If you don't like seafood DO NOT get the chicken tenders because they use the same oil to fry the chicken in as they do their fish. We had the pleasure of dining at J. Alexander's in Raleigh last night and had a superb evening. Although we have eaten there previously, last night was special. Our daughter and son-in-law joined us and although no one at the restaurant knew, we were celebrating his recent news that he is now Cancer Free. I could not have asked for a better night. The hostess and wait staff did an awesome job in a friendly and efficient way. Our dinners were great, as usual, but I must say that my Prime Rib meal was exquisite!! I usually don't get dessert but last night my daughter and I had their Carrot Cake. I LOVE Carrot Cake and have eaten it at many restaurants BUT, this is the best I have ever had!! We will be going back again for dinner or celebrations and I highly recommend it. read more

Whenever I am in the mood for a salad and hot croissants I head over to J. Alexander's. I usually go by myself. I like the the dimly lite dining area. It makes me feel at home. On my last visit I saw former Piston Vinnie Johnson. Back to the restaurant. I had an early lunch so it wasn't crowded. My waitress was super nice and efficient. The parking lot wasn't crowded, my food arrived quickly and like usual, it was great! I avoid this restaurant on Saturday nights. I was going to dinner with some friends at a different restaurant or so we thought,we arrived to that other restaurant only t find it closed for business. We quickly chose J Alexander's as our venue. What a terrific place! I arrived before my friends so I waited in the bar and started with a dirty martini. It was ok for the 12.50 price tag, a tad bit salty for my taste and the olives had nothing in them...kind of a let down. Once my friends arrived we were seated shortly and our waitress was a very bubbly young lady who knew the menu. She recommended the salmon appetizer which was outstanding! For dinner she suggested the salmon or the "steak Maui". I chose the steak because in my world beef is what's for dinner, my friends both had the salmon. We all sampled from each others plates and all dishes lived up to the hype. We all chose to have dessert they had 3 offerings so we all ordered something different so we could sample and these desserts did not disappoint! All three were simply delicious! Aside from the lackluster martini,this was a great evening out! It's nice too that there are other locations so you don't have to go to Farmington to check it out! Food is decent but TERRIBLE service! Hostess Deanna was EXTREMELY rude to members of our party. My husband and I came a little late to meet up with our family with our two very young kids and she would not let us sit with our party. She stated that because they had people on the waiting list we had to wait...to be seated at another table. I could understand this if we required an extra table but we just wanted to meet up with our party and my mother and father saved us seats at their booth. Does this make sense?!? After eating at the Troy location we were severely disappointed by this location. The service is HORRIBLE!!! The hostess was rude. "How many? Stand around the corner to be seated." That is not a great first impression and we should have known to leave then. Our waitress was equally awful. No introduced, no silverware, had to get out of my seat and request drink refills and ask where my leftovers were after 10 minutes of waiting for a box. We eat here a lot and never have much of an issue, and the kids love the French dip. They love it so much that they wanted to pick them up on the way home from baseball (little league), so I called to order, only to be informed: 'I'm sorry, but we don't take carry out orders over the phone. You have to come in and order at the bar.". Great, so now I have to take crabby, cold and hungry ten year olds to stand around a bar at 10pm, but whatever, they want the dumb sandwiches and they just won. We order and wait. I get the bill, complete with the run down for 'appropriate' tip amounts. Really? I should tip 15, 18, or 20% on take out? Take out I've been waiting twenty minutes for? The take out that we waited even longer for because it was wrong the first time? Also, I ordered the veggie burger and have enjoyed once before, but this time-disgusting. Great service and food - hosted a birthday celebration on 4th of July dinner for 24 people. Staff and bartender were fantastic. Everyone received their food hot and at the same time. I normally only visit this particular location maybe once or twice a year on special occasions with my family since it's a little pricey; however for the money, the quality of food and overall service is usually top notch. That was not the case with my visit tonight- ordered a steak, Mac n Cheese, and smashed potatoes. I will admit the steak was cooked pretty well but appeared to have been microwaved before it came out; the Mac n cheese was good but the potatoes were cold. Took us far too long to flag down our server so we had to find someone else's to inform them about the potatoes. Rarely saw our server all night, had to utilize other servers multiple times; Granted, it wasn't a slow night there but certainly by no means a line out the door; I did see 5-6 "hostesses" gathered at the front station not appearing to be very during the hour we were there. Started out right with some hot sourdough bread and butter and followed with a juicy, perfectly cooked Salmon. It was served with their awesome orzo and a superb fish sauce on the side. I wish I could remember the name of the waitress, she was fantastic!!! We had a party of three and we stayed for 3hours. The waitress was super friendly and very attentive. We had the spinach queso, amazing! My friends had the chicken salad and I had the pecan fish. Absolutely delicious and huge portions!! The Orchard Lake Rd location does NOT take reservations. The Yelp site says yes it does. I just called with a party of 7, which, even for a no reservation policy is a polite and smart thing to do. I was talked to like I didnt know which location I was talking about but told there was no reason to call since she was sure we could be handled but would face a wait. I've been to J's many times and have to say they have maintained their wonderful customer service. The servers are always on top and helpful and the food wait isn't too bad. However, I have to say the quality of the food has gone down. It's not like before. The portions are great but the lack of quality of the food needs to be improved. Tonight was bar none the worst experience at a J Alexanders. The bar staff was aloof, slow and extremely careless. I was asked by Kim, the bartender to slide down an notch in the bar , while in them middle of eating my meal. I politely responded to her that I would do so, after I finished my meal. Meanwhile, one patron, who was not eating slid down closer to us to accommodate seating for the couple. It was a highly embarrassing experience as it turned out I knew the couple.
