After eating at the Troy location we were severely disappointed by this location. The service is HORRIBLE!!! The hostess was rude. "How many? Stand around the corner to be seated." That is not a great first impression and we should have known to leave then. Our waitress was equally awful. No introduced, no silverware, had to get out of my seat and request drink refills and ask where my leftovers were after 10 minutes of waiting for a box. Do yourself a favor and drive to Troy to get the service you would anticipate for a $70 lunch. read more

I was going to dinner with some friends at a different restaurant or so we thought,we arrived to that other restaurant only t find it closed for business. We quickly chose J Alexander's as our venue. What a terrific place! I arrived before my friends so I waited in the bar and started with a dirty martini. It was ok for the 12.50 price tag, a tad bit salty for my taste and the olives had nothing in them...kind of a let down. Once my friends arrived we were seated shortly and our waitress was a very bubbly young lady who knew the menu. She recommended the salmon appetizer which was outstanding! For dinner she suggested the salmon or the "steak Maui". I chose the steak because in my world beef is what's for dinner, my friends both had the salmon. We all sampled from each others plates and all dishes lived up to the hype. We all chose to have dessert they had 3 offerings so we all ordered something different so we could sample and these desserts did not disappoint! All three were simply delicious! Aside from the lackluster martini,this was a great evening out! It's nice too that there are other locations so you don't have to go to Farmington to check it out! I normally only visit this particular location maybe once or twice a year on special occasions with my family since it's a little pricey; however for the money, the quality of food and overall service is usually top notch. That was not the case with my visit tonight- ordered a steak, Mac n Cheese, and smashed potatoes. I will admit the steak was cooked pretty well but appeared to have been microwaved before it came out; the Mac n cheese was good but the potatoes were cold. Took us far too long to flag down our server so we had to find someone else's to inform them about the potatoes. Rarely saw our server all night, had to utilize other servers multiple times; Granted, it wasn't a slow night there but certainly by no means a line out the door; I did see 5-6 "hostesses" gathered at the front station not appearing to be very during the hour we were there. Great service and food - hosted a birthday celebration on 4th of July dinner for 24 people. Staff and bartender were fantastic. Everyone received their food hot and at the same time. We eat here a lot and never have much of an issue, and the kids love the French dip. They love it so much that they wanted to pick them up on the way home from baseball (little league), so I called to order, only to be informed: 'I'm sorry, but we don't take carry out orders over the phone. You have to come in and order at the bar.". Great, so now I have to take crabby, cold and hungry ten year olds to stand around a bar at 10pm, but whatever, they want the dumb sandwiches and they just won. We order and wait. I get the bill, complete with the run down for 'appropriate' tip amounts. Really? I should tip 15, 18, or 20% on take out? Take out I've been waiting twenty minutes for? The take out that we waited even longer for because it was wrong the first time? Also, I ordered the veggie burger and have enjoyed once before, but this time-disgusting. I wish I could remember the name of the waitress, she was fantastic!!! We had a party of three and we stayed for 3hours. The waitress was super friendly and very attentive. We had the spinach queso, amazing! My friends had the chicken salad and I had the pecan fish. Absolutely delicious and huge portions!! The chocolate cake and cocktails were terrific, definitely strong cocktails so you got your money's worth and then some. Had a great time, great food. Definitely will be back! read more

If you want a hearty meal, order the prime rib sandwich and real mashed potatoes - incredible! Always great service and atmosphere - food is consistently good. The service was great, as usual; but the chicken tacos were abnormally spicy today. Even a colleague who ordered the same thing, commented likewise. I really got sick to my stomach later in the day as a result. I called the manager to note my dissatisfaction with the tacos, and he spent 3 minutes telling me about what he will tell the chef tomorrow, but nothing as to "Can I get you a free xx when you come to visit us next time?" I've been craving J's for a few weeks and I finally indulged there tonight. As usual it was amazing! Started out right with some hot sourdough bread and butter and followed with a juicy, perfectly cooked Salmon. It was served with their awesome orzo and a superb fish sauce on the side. The Orchard Lake Rd location does NOT take reservations. The Yelp site says yes it does. I just called with a party of 7, which, even for a no reservation policy is a polite and smart thing to do. I was talked to like I didnt know which location I was talking about but told there was no reason to call since she was sure we could be handled but would face a wait. Anyway, Yelp should amend its info and dont bother calling this place. read more

Too loud, too expensive and wait staff was NOT very attentive and it was not busy. I had to lean over the table to hear my other guests as the noise level was too much. No vegetables with the meal and not even offered ala carte, coffee was never refilled . I have had much better food, in a much better atmosphere at a far better price. I've been to J's many times and have to say they have maintained their wonderful customer service. The servers are always on top and helpful and the food wait isn't too bad. However, I have to say the quality of the food has gone down. It's not like before. The portions are great but the lack of quality of the food needs to be improved. Tonight was bar none the worst experience at a J Alexanders. The bar staff was aloof, slow and extremely careless. I was asked by Kim, the bartender to slide down an notch in the bar , while in them middle of eating my meal. I politely responded to her that I would do so, after I finished my meal. Meanwhile, one patron, who was not eating slid down closer to us to accommodate seating for the couple. It was a highly embarrassing experience as it turned out I knew the couple. Unfortunately I have to warn customers away from this establishment. I was at the west Bloomfield location this even with clients. Our food was very good however half way through the meal a waitress spilled some sort of sauce which covered my shirt with a mixture of tomato sauce and oil. When the manager was called, he refused to stand behind the service of his staff. My shirt is ruined due to their carelessness. They would do nothing to compensate for their error. Needless to say, I will not visit an establishment that does not do right by the customer. read more

J Alexander's has both good and not so good features. It's really big so getting seated is usually not a problem. Service is fast and friendly. The menu is a little limited. The meals are decent. Most of what I've ordered, I've liked, but not all. I really like the rotisserie chicken, but the chicken tacos seem to be made with "yesterday's chicken" if you know what I mean. The desserts are fabulous! The chocolate cake and the carrot cake are amazing and huge! They're very good about letting you substitute different sides with your meals. Don't order your meal until you're done with your appetizer, because it comes out really fast. We like to pace it out a little slower. read more

This was my first experience at this restaurant, and it will absolutely be my last! I couldn't have been more disappointed! We had so many different servers it was pitiful. Our first server, Drew, said he would be taking care of us for the evening. I would love to know his definition of "taking care of us".......since in my opinion, and also those who were with me, he did "nothing" to take care of us. He spoke to us for about a minute after we were seated saying he would be taking care of us this evening. He then took our order, and that was about it. Two other servers brought our food to us. A few times he walked by our table, and we had to stop him and ask for more coffee, pop, and ketchup. He politely said he would bring them to us. After waiting for quite some time and never getting what we had asked for, we got the attention of other servers who got us what we needed. I had ordered a turkey burger with no cheese or sauce on it. That was all. When it arrived, it had an order of mac and cheese sitting on the plate, along with a turkey burger loaded with cheese. I took my fork and tasted a very small piece of the bottom of the burger with no cheese on it, and it was very good. However, paying $15.00 for a turkey burger, (which is way over priced) I figured I wanted it made the way I requested it. We got the attention of a server (not Drew, as he was not interested in knowing how our food was and never came by our table) and told her I had ordered no cheese on it and I would like one made without the cheese. They said they were sorry and would take care of the situation. About two minutes later, a different server comes back with my turkey burger, and it was the same burger I had sent back! All they did was scrape the cheese off of the original burger and give it back to me! I could tell immediately, because it was missing the small amount of meat that I had tasted, in the exact same spot. This time we flagged down Drew and told him what had happened. Since he didn't really seem phased by what had occurred, we asked to speak to a manager.....Erin....and she said she was sorry and would get me a new burger right away. By the time I finally got my food, the rest of my party was finished with theirs, so there I sat eating by myself. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone! I am appalled they opted to scrape off the cheese from a burger, rather than make a new one. This speaks volumes about not caring one bit about customer satisfaction! Also, the non-caring attitude from the staff and manager was shocking! The biggest disappointment of all, they charged me for my meal!
