I found this place a couple of years ago when in town for a religious convention. Fish and Chicken was fried to perfection and so delicious I ate most of it in the car, before heading home. Fast forward a year later same thing fried to perfection still delicious. Prices have increased as with everything but overall a good deal. I really wanted some wings tonight and I found a location in the burbs! Definitely had to try it out. I tried to call to order ahead of time but no one has answered, but online it stated that they were open, so I proceeded to head to the restaurant. I got there and they weren't too busy, I ordered by food & waited about 15-20 for it (which I wished I could have called in my order instead). Hailing from the South, we have missed our catfish and hushpuppies. So we found ourselves ordering the catfish fillet dinners with coleslaw and fries. We also got an order of hushpuppies. The good: The hushpuppies were decent. The fries were unseasoned and plain, nothing remarkable but thankfully edible. The bad: Literally everything else. --First, the catfish was not deboned. We can live with this, but it would've been nice to see it mentioned on the menu. Then we wouldn't have had to order this for our kids, and painstakingly pick through pieces of fish finding little (and bigger) bones while they're whining they're hungry. I legit thought this was going to be a quick "order food and eat" process. But no. Maybe there is deboned catfish... I don't know. Maybe we ordered the deboned catfish and somehow got the bone-in fish.... I don't know (but it definitely looked like catfish steaks). All I know, is this was a pain in the butt while I was getting hangry along with the kids because I had to deal with this on a day that we just didn't have the energy for. First world problems? Sure. But you know... we live in one. So there's that. --Second, there were pieces of catfish that was not cooked through. No offense, but I don't like "jellied" fish that I can squish see through. Then I'd get sushi. But I didn't... I got fried catfish. My husband refused to eat the rest of his fish. So it went in the trash. Lovely. --Third, the coleslaw. It comes in one of those 1 or 2oz containers. Why we paid for it, I don't know. It's literally 1-2 bites and gone. And it tasted... wrong? It had a weird flavor and no one wanted to finish it, even though there wasn't much of it. It had... I don't even know how to explain it... an off flavor. This was not an experience I want to repeat. It doesn't help that my husband got there on time and still had to wait extra time for the pickup order. Just... nope. Not on my recommendation list. read more

I ordered fish and fries. They messed up the whole order special instructions. I asked for lemon pepper and my order. The fries were limp and greasy no lemon pepper on the fish. I also ordered two pieces of caramel cake. They gave me German chocolate cake. Told me to bring back the unopened cake the next day. After much convincing . They refuse to correct my fish order. Also, the one piece of cake was disgusting. It is not the same cake as Fuck you get in the city at J&J's. It has the texture of a sponge. This place is a real hit or miss. I decided to give this joint a try and I had an ok experience. My friend and I both ordered fish and did not enjoy the meal. It was extremely greasy. I enjoyed my recent visit to JJ Fish of Bolingbrook on Route 53. I did not like the other location on Boughton Rd next to Tailgaters, although they are not the same owners. This location in next to Walmart just north of I-55 on Route 53. The Catfish Nuggets are huge and the portions for a small $5.99 order is super generous. The cashier is always smiling and friendly. This J & J on Bolingbrook Drive should be avoided. I ordered the cat fish tails which should be moist, meaty, and delicious. It was absolutely HORRIBLE! The fish size was very tiny and fried so hard that it was not edible. The 3 small pieces were like 3 fried crackers. The fish had cuts in them I guess to make cooking faster but it just dried the fish completely out. When I picked up the bag it was so light weight I thought it was empty. To add insult to injury they didn't put the hot sauce in it that I asked for. I drove straight to McDonalds for a sandwich because that $13 meal wasn't fit to eat and even if it was it would not be enough to feed anyone. Since the fish was so bad I'm sure the chicken would be fried to death and super small pieces which J & J restaurants do these days. Go somewhere else if you want decent food. They should be ashamed of what they do. So not happy this July 16, 2023. read more

I was a big fan of JJ fish when I lived in Chicago and loved their fried catfish. When I found out they opened their first store on Boughton Rd, I immediately drove on over for some catfishy goodness. The first couple of visits were good and my catfish was just like the ones I had from the city, but the quality went down hill after that and I never came back.... When I saw that they open a second store, I decided to give suburban JJ Fish another try. So far, my orders were on on par to what I had in Chicago which makes me happy as I don't have to go to the city anymore for my fried catfish fix. The owners are quite friendly, as well. I suggest that you order ahead because it takes some time for them to fry up your order. If you don't call, expect to wait 25 - 40 minutes to get your order. They do have other things on the menu like fried chicken, fried mushrooms, and fried...just about anything. Not really healthy food, but if you are in the mood for fried stuff, you can find it here. I've had the fried mushrooms and they were pretty good, but I usually stick to the catfish steaks. I knew what it was before I placed my order. I knew it was a giant freezer full of chicken, fish, vegetables(s) and a giant deep fat fryer. I knew that. I knew the whole setup was devoid of nutrition and flavor. I was fully prepared for a giant grease bomb no matter what I ordered. Sometimes that's okay. What I didn't know was how gross and low quality ALL the food was going to be. Chicken that was surely prepared and frozen in the last century, sad shrimp that was more breading than shrimp, super old fries and okra and EVERYTHING was incinerated in grease that needed to be changed yesterday. The worst. We went here before with the previous owners and the food tasted fresh. They now charge you for mild sauce without telling you. And on top of that they added two sauces per large dinner and charged for a bowl of sauce for the 20 piece without telling us. We were charged an additional $3 in sauce. Wow this place has gone down. I used to frequent this location beginning in '06 up until I moved to another town in '09. It used to be very good, I guess they have some new owners now because I went today and it was a totally different experience. First of all, all the prices on the menu board were removed and blank, so I had no idea what anything cost. I found a raggedy paper menu I used to order. I will admit the people were very nice though. I ordered 6 wings and fries for $5.99. While waiting I noticed there were flies everywhere, boxes all over the counter and a wal-mart shopping cart in the hallway leading to the restroom. Just atrocious! After about 15 minutes I got my food and left. My wings were dry and over cooked and the fries had no taste. Not going back I'll just go to the one on Boughton. read more

The food was good and and very warm. It was still extremely warm when I finished my order! Catfish fillet, wings and I ordered 1 shrimp because I just wanted to get the full experience of what they had available, they actually cooked an extra shrimp . The food was extremely hot and stayed that way. The fries were good, not as good as Miky D's. I did like the taste of the food. Value was good to fair. 1 fillet of Catfish 2 wings and 1 shrimp and fries was about 7.5 $ . After saying that, the place is filthy!!! Get your order to go otherwise the longer you stay the more you will be disgusted of how dirty the place is and needs a bottle of bleach poured everywhere!! The good news is the food is deep fried and killed any possible germs! I must say probably the hottest food I've ordered in a while! Get your food to go and do not stay inside any longer than you have to . Food quality is slightly better than Long John's. And please don't expect these employees to love their job! I grew very fond of J&J fish in the city, and was happy to find one out here in suburbia. The selection here was just as good as any in the city, their menu including buffalo wings, fried chicken wings, fried perch, fried salmon, and a few different sides (basically the normal stuff you find at places where everything is cooked in the deep-fryer.) Special combos were available for all items. They also had some red potato salad that was really good. The hot sauce they give you on the side is plenty hot, even though the barbecue sauce is rather generic. The only complaint I had about this location was the time it took to complete the order. I guess they had a lot of phoned in orders while we were waiting for ours, and they forgot to start our order. It took almost twenty minutes to get our food. But the gizzards were definitely worth the wait! read more

I have been coming here for quite awhile now- to clarify this is the JJ fish south of Boughton road on 53 basically next to the Wal Mart. There is another JJ fish East on Boughton which is totally inferior- not even close. The fish and wings here are great- some of my favorite fried fish out there although to be honest fried fish never really seems to vary much. The owners are very friendly and maintain that upbeat friendliness even in the midst of crazy lunch rushes. Definitely order ahead if you are going to show up between 11 am and about 1 pm as the lunch rush can lead to long wait times. I have never waited 40 minutes but at times the wait could be 20 if it is super busy. Added another star-this place is consistently very good-very fresh food and now they seem to be remodeling too. OK I admit that I went here and hit up a (beef) burger. I know it's not their area of expertise, but I'm a sucker for burgers. J&J were recently advertising (halal) burgers, so I had to execute as it's a local, convenient option. The burger is more so Indian/Pakistani (IndoPak) with a "masala" (spices) touch to it. I don't mind a masala burger, but if I wanted one, I'd get some at home. They should make a regular, traditional burger instead. If you're not ethnic to IndoPak, it might be an interesting, flavorful burger for you. But next time, I'll stick to the name of J&J Fish and Chicken and focus on the fish instead. Beware! Stay away! Absolutely horrible!! I bought 50 wings from them a year ago, and they were fine. However, I went there yesterday (12/07/2014)and got the catfish nugget and shrimp combo. It was awful. The nuggets were encased in grease! With every nugget, every bite, the grease would squirt out like water in your mouth and hands. Do not go here at all. Something is lacking. The chicken is just not good! I don't know what it's missing but it's probably my least favorite JJ's. Wow, just terrible. I can't believe this place is still open. I went there with some coworkers for lunch, and we literally almost left the moment we walked in the door. The insane collection of dust on the screen door and grease dripping from the sprinkler heads should have been enough to get us to rethink our lunch decision. Full disclosure here, I actually didn't order anything, since they didn't have a Buffalo Chicken Sandwich on the menu, but my coworkers fought off gut instinct and placed there orders. (I'm now thankful they didn't have what I wanted!) I kid you not, most of the food was thrown away back at the office and these people made corn dogs and frozen White Castle cheeseburgers for lunch. The food from this JJ Fish was that horrible. One person described his fried chicken as tasting of soggy sawdust. Anyone who had fish mentioned it tasted old, and fishy. Many had bones or scales under the batter. Seriously, avoid this place. Go during lunch and see how few people go in, that should be enough to deter you from eating here. read more

My hubby introduced me to J&J years ago... the 1st spot was the one on Boughton, which was terrible! After that we've always gone to this location by Walmart and we have never had a bad experience ever not even with the old management! Just had 2 large chicken tender meals on Sunday and as always cover Everything with extra hot sauce and it was delish!!! Maybe next time I'll try the chicken burger... but definitely addicted to the tenders! On a side note.. we just moved back from Florida and we hit this up straight away! The food here is wonderful. Came here for the first time and ordered 2 Large Catfish fillets along with the a Zabiha Halal Chicken Burger. Both were amazingly delicious, The Catfish fillet was fried just perfectly with the perfect amount of lemon pepper. The Zabiha Halal Chicken burger (YESS ZABIHA HALAL) was probably one of the most tastiest and juiciest burgers I've had in the Chicagoland Area. Customer service was friendly as well. Unfortunately, this was not a good take-out experience for me. I ordered two catfish dinners (all steaks). My fish was tough and it tasted like the oil it was cooked in was old.
