Extraordinary work from a top notch crew!! This was my 3rd time using this personable and hardworking group. This time is was for fire abatement. With the massive rains we had this year, brush and tree's grew exponentially resulting in a possible fire danger. Wanting to protect my home as much as possible, I called Rene, this time as brush clearance. A gentleman named Rene came out evaluated our home gave a verbal quote and said he would follow up with a email proposal as well as providing proof of insurance etc. We never heard from him. my husband wrote to him twice via email. no response. We've used this company a few times and the first couple of visits went well. This past visit, however, one of the workers laid down a hot chainsaw right on top of our brand new lawn turf, completely melting it. When I confronted the supervisor Rene about it, he denied responsibility, saying it was already there (it wasn't), but that he would send some guys to come and fix it. Several days passed and not one word from him or the company at all. I followed up via phone twice, but never received a call back. Had such a great experience with J&J Tree Service today! I contacted them and Rene called me back to inquire what I needed. We have a large Aleppo Pine Tree with a beautiful curved trunk that needed some weight taken out of it, trimmed, and re-shaped. Rene remembered that he and his crew had trimmed the tree as well as some others years ago... I checked my records and he was correct. They provided a very fair price and the crew, in particular the foreman, was pleasant, courteous, knowledgeable and professional. I have used this company before without problems. However, the last time we engaged them in early February, the crew did not complete the trimming job for which I have paid in full. Rene of J&J acknowledged that the job was incomplete on February 6 and promised to send someone out to finish the job by mid February. In the over 50 days since my February 6 conversation with Rene, all of my subsequent calls/messages (3 total) and emails (5 total) seeking an update have gone unanswered, and the job remains incomplete. Horrible communication and unscrupulous business practices by this company. I intend to engage another company to finish the job and back charge J&J for the costs. Given my last experience, I can't recommend that anyone use this company. read more

I called for an estimate and they sent someone out the next week. That's where the good service ended. The estimator was not thorough, not helpful, and never sent me an estimate. I called back to the office five more times to try to get the estimate, but I never heard back from them. They are definitely not worth the hassle. And in the meantime they trimmed one of my trees that overhangs a neighbor's yard and dropped debris that damaged my new outdoor dining set. Irresponsible and disrespectful. Our HOA board has used the same tree trimming service for years, but decided to get a few more bids for our annual service this year. I had seen a couple of great reviews for J & J on the Next Door app, so we got a bid from them. Their price was the lowest of the 3 bids we got, but we decided to give them a shot. I was worried that they would come in and completely hack the trees since their price was so reasonable. I was so wrong! They trimmed our trees aggressively without hacking them. They actually shaped the trees instead of leaving raw, chopped off branches. It looks so nice! read more

The workers are currently working on our street. My car has been parked on the street for the last 2 days. They were piling up branches about 3 feet behind my car with the exception of one long piece that was only a few inches. I asked them to move it so I can back up and get out of the spot. The man proceeded to stand to direct me. Let me make it clear I am perfectly capable of parking my large suv and do not need assistance. I stopped him and said I don't need you to direct me, I asked you to please move those longer branches so I don't hit them. Another man, assuming he was the supervisor came over and very aggressively shouted "why would you park there when you can see we are working here?" I turned and immediately told him that I had been parked there for two days and hadn't moved and I didn't appreciate his attitude or tone. He started again and I stopped him and asked if he was the owner. He stumbled for a minute before I asked again. He finally said yes but I'm going to make a guess he may have been lying based on his hesitance. This street currently has a terrible lack of parking due to construction in the area. Even if my car hadn't been parked there when they arrived to work, he had absolutely no business commenting on my using street parking. He had no customer service skills and this is how he treats neighbors while representing this company. Trust me, when I need a tree service I won't be calling this company based solely on this interaction. read more

Once again, Rene came and gave me a great price to cut 11 trees down to the ground (medium ficus bordering my neighbors cement wall). they removed all the debris and old leaves, they also cleared out a mess alongside my house of various shrubs. I was referred to this company from Ram Construction. Rene came out 2/16. It is now 3/8. I have yet to receive an estimate, let alone a phone call or email response. I'm not sure how long it usually takes to get an estimate, but 3 weeks seems a little ridiculous. Although there was a little bit of phone tag going on in the beginning, everything turned out perfectly!! Rene was very prompt for the initial Saturday appointment and gave us a fair estimate. We had our service done that Monday! Rene's team was there at exactly at your start time. They knocked on the door, they introduce themselves and went over the job that they will be doing. They explain to me that any plants underneath the tree might have some damage due to the nature of their work which is completely understandable and I was 100% okay with that (also Rene spoke to us about that). The end result was fantastic with zero damage to any of the plants under the tree. They cleaned up fantastic and you wouldn't even know any kind of work was done that day! First let me be clear that I did not use J&J tree service. They worked on a projected across the street from my home. Did not seem that they follow any of Cal Osha safety and environmental guide lines. I was very surprised at that, safety should be number one priority of the worker. After chipping the tree in the giant tree chipper they did not clean the mess of all the saw dust in the neighboring yards and driveways. Both my cars were covered with sawdust and has oil, since it was an Eucalyptus tree. 2 car washes on each car to get them clean. But what was more disturbing was the attitude of the workers. When I approached them with my complaint no one spoke English (what a surprise). I don't blame the workers because I feel that it's the responsibility of the supervisor and the owner of the company to manage the quality of the workmanship and service. If a company has no regard for the neighbors of thier customers why should anyone use them. read more

I had a very challenging, overgrown Juniper tree that had not been attended to in years. Jose and his team cut the tree back, shaped it, and cleaned out years of fallen needles that had accumulated under the tree. It was a challenging job, and these guys really knew what they were doing! Received a flyer in the mail from J & J so I called for a quote to do some major overhaul of our entire yard. I called three times and there was no answer or answering machine. I went on their website and filled out the online quote request. I called again two days later and did reach an answering service. I have still not received a call back or email. Don't waste your time. A couple of weeks ago, Rene came very promptly to give me an estimate to remove some dead redwood trees from my yard. He seemed very knowledgeable, and said he would get back to me with an estimate. A couple of days later, when I had not received the estimate, I sent him and email. No reply. The next day, I called and the office said they would give him a message. No reply. So I called again, and guess what? No reply. And only because I'm a glutton for punishment, I actually called a third time and explained that I had already called twice and sent an email...and could Rene please get back to me with an estimate or declining the work. No reply. So don't bother unless you want to have your time wasted by a company that doesn't want the work. read more

We just moved in to a new house and needed a few dead trees removed from the property. The team from J & J showed up right on time and did an excellent job. We had a narrow driveway and there was no place to park their large truck and wood chipper so they brought a van and made three trips hauling away the tree parts. They also had to go through extra steps just to get the stump removal machine up a hill. They tarped the neighbor's fence so the debris would not get in their yard. When the job was done they cleaned up perfectly. These guys are really hard workers and perfectionists. I will for sure be using them again and would highly recommend them. read more

All true- I had my gardener, who also does tree trimming and removal,give me what he said was a great price of $1500 for 3 large pines. I will say that I had a certain reluctance to hire J&J based on the very mixed Yelp reviews. We have a 70+ foot tall pine tree in the front yard of our new home that has clearly never been professionally trimmed in it's life. With some of the recent rainstorms and wind, we had considered taking it down altogether, but hadn't made up our minds yet. Then another storm hit and a large branch broke and was dangling from the mid-section of the tree. The time had come. We called 3 tree companies to get quotes - both for trimming and lacing the tree, and a separate quote for complete removal. The first quote for trimming came in at $1900; the second for $1850; and finally Rene's for $550. I was completely shocked. I checked their license with the CA state board and saw that it was legit and current. I checked yelp and saw the mixed reviews, but the price differential was too much to ignore and we called to book them. Rene called back just a few hours later and scheduled the job for the next day. A 3 man crew showed up and trimmed and laced our tree for FIVE HOURS! They were extremely kind and courteous. I moved our car to the street so they had enough room on the driveway, and their lead guy even knocked on the door to let me know that it was getting close to street-sweeping time and I should move the car. My toddler son was also at home at the time and they swept a path in the driveway so we could wheel the stroller out to go to the park. We were so incredibly pleased with our experience. I checked multiple times to ensure they would accept credit cards, since they appeared to be an issue some Yelpers had. I was assured they did. Then when I went to pay, they asked me to write down my credit card info on a piece of paper and they would process it. That made me very uncomfortable, but the experience had been positive so far, so I did, and then closely monitored my credit card activity. I had no issues. We were so grateful for the detailed, prompt, and professional job they did that I tipped them $100. Considering they must've taken at least 1,500 lbs of weight off our tree, it was a screaming deal even at that price. read more

I called J&J tree service for advice about a huge Pepper tree in my backyard that was dropping lots of debris and leaves constantly. First of all they have a live person answering the phone which is so rare these days. The receptionist told me someone would contact me soon. I got a call back in less than 2 hours and Rene was able to come right over. He looked at the tree and we discussed options and he gave me prices. I decided to have the tree removed. Rene didn't pressure me, he said to just call him back with my decision. He gave me his business card with his cell number on it. I called him the next day and he scheduled a crew the following morning at 9 am. The crew arrived before 9, and immediately got to work. I had to leave to go to work myself. I paid them with a check(which was very reasonable) and when I got home from work the job was complete and the yard was all cleaned up with no sign of branches or leaves or anything. Very professional job, on time and good price. What more would you want. If I ever have a tree issue again I will definitely call these guys. They are great. You get what you pay for. and they were the cheapest bid. four projects. three were fine. one looks pretty bad with a five inch branch chopped four feet from the trunk. both the crew foreman and rene shrugged and said 'it'll grow back'. clean up fair. The crew foreman the first day kept telling me he was going to cut one tree 'under the wires' -- he apparantly meant under the electric wires and around the phone wires, but couldn't make that clear... and when Rene came to translate, he left the job so it became a two day job. My driveway was hosed down in the middle of a drought. The second crew foreman confirmed he had done so, until i mentioned the drought, then his english failed him and he said they were watering the flowers and shrugged. You get what you pay for, and they will waste water during a drought emergency. read more
