Repair quality is hit or miss. I've had good and bad outcomes of repairs performed by J B Auto Repair. In the past, they've repaired the suspension and brakes and/or done routine maintenance on two of our vehicles and other than perpetuating certain myths common to mechanics (like "Change the oil every 3,000 miles" versus manufacturer's recommendation and my favorite: "Only use Chevron gas because it's better"), they have been reliable and their prices have been reasonable. That was not the case when I brought my Ford Ranger in for oil leak(s). Initially, they were going to change the oil pan gasket (a common failure on Ford Duratec engines due to the design of the pan). Ford's dumb design requires at least lifting the engine and in some cases, removing it entirely. After they removed the pan, they called to tell me that the rear main seal was also leaking and replacing it added $200 to the original $400 repair. I picked up the truck and drove it home and oil was still dripping off the engine and onto the catalytic converter causing a fire danger. I brought the Ranger back and told them it was still leaking oil. I also questioned Jim on whether he had applied RTV sealer to the corners, as recommended by many mechanics, including the Ford dealer. Jim told me they didn't because it wasn't necessary. Later on, he called back saying the oil pan was warped and needed to be replaced. I questioned this because in my opinion, at that point JB was "shotgunning" the repair (replacing part after part to find out which one was the culprit) but told him to go ahead. Jim called back a few hours later and said he thought they may have fixed the problem by re-tightening the bolts for the pan and had cancelled the order of an oil pan. I again picked up the truck and drove home to find oil was still dripping on my driveway and the catalytic converter was still smoking. At that point, I decided I'd had enough and took my Ranger to El Cajon Ford. They diagnosed the problem by cleaning the engine and adding a dye to the oil (which I doubt J B did since when I looked under the truck after both service attempts, the entire underside of the engine and much of the transmission was caked with oil and dirt). El Cajon Ford replaced the rear crankshaft main seal and the oil pan gasket (using RTV at the corners as required), and the transmission input shaft seal. After driving the truck a couple of days, there is no evidence of any remaining oil leaks. I'm happy with the final result but disappointed that I paid JB $600+ with nothing to show for it except a receipt from El Cajon Ford for more than twice that amount. read more

I was referred to Jim by a very good family friend that said Jim would take good care of us, and does great work. He replace my engine in my Jeep Liberty and though we had some hiccups throughout the process, Jim was very caring about the whole situation. It was not only stressful not having a car, but financially stressful as well because not only did we pay engine cost, but we also had rental cost. It was just a big financial setback during the holidays. I want to write this well deserved review for JB Auto Repair because Jim took very good care of us. He made sure we were happy and he even offered to lend my family a car so we wouldn't have to rent a a car... THATS A GREAT MAN! When I first started going to Jim's auto repair over 15 years ago he was an honest, reasonable and fair business man and mechanic. But recently I had some major repairs done to my vehicle at JB auto repair. I know he has a whole different mechanic other than himself doing the mechanic work on people's vehicles. Jim told me that he was going to do a thorough labor job on my vehicles' parts by sending them to a machine shop to get totally inspected and repaired as needed. I was at his shop when he told me this and that same day he had just removed the parts to send them off to the machine shop. He also told me that it was going to take several days for the machine shop to inspect and repair the parts. So I took his word for it. It just happens that the next day I was in the area of his auto shop and I just decided to stop by to see if he had already sent the parts to the machine shop and to my surprise I saw that he had the parts reinstalled back in my vehicle obviously without ever sending them to the machine shop like he promised me that he was going to do. So I confronted him about the situation and asked him why is it that he didn't send the parts to the machine shop like he promised me he was going to do. He turned around and told me that he had personally inspected the parts himself with some so called inspection tool that he has at his shop. After he did his own inspection he told me that he knew for a fact that my parts where still and good condition and there was no need to send them to the machine shop. Prior to him giving me the round around about my parts and him doing what he did to them he told me that he needed some money from me so he could send the parts to the machine shop and do what he promised me he was going to do. So again I whole heartily took his word for it and gave him the money. But it turns out that after he repaired my vehicle he told me that I shouldn't have any problems with the particular repairs that he did to my vehicle. Eventually some time went by after I paid him and took my vehicle out of his shop. I was operating my vehicle in a normal manner when long behold I started having problems with what he supposedly fixed. So after all my loyalty and trust worthiness in him I decided to go to a other mechanic because he told that my vehicle was to old and he was in no way, shape or form willing to work on it even though he promised me a one year warranty on my parts and labor that his mechanic performed on my vehicle. So with all this being said and most of all that he is not the honest and trustworthy business man and mechanic that he used to be there is no way I could ever recommend anybody to consider him to do any kind of auto repairs on anybody's vehicle. read more

Jim is honest and reasonably priced. He went out of his way to help me with some pre-sale inspections of some vehicles when I was looking to purchase a used van. I ended up with a very nice vehicle, without him I KNOW I would have a bought a lemon!! He also fixed my truck for much less than other shops would have done the work. To begin I have known Jim for 10+ years. I first found his business on the Better Business Bureau yellow pages book (Begin with Trust). I whole heartily trusted and believed in him as a business man and a very knowledgeable mechanic but recently I went to him to get my vehicle repaired and like always he did repair it and gave me a warranty for it. But also just recently my vehicle started acting up on the same exact thing that he supposedly fixed so I made sure to bring it up to his attention because my vehicle was still under his labor warranty but to my surprise he proceeded to inform me that he was not willing to work on my vehicle anymore because he swore up and down that he didn't know what was wrong with it when he knew for a fact that it was still under warranty and he knew exactly what was wrong with it. So since I was so distraught about what he had informed me about I proceeded to visit the Better Business Bureau's website to see if he was still a BBB accredited business and according to the BBB his business is no longer accredited with them. So with that being said I am not a bit surprised to find that out. So in all honesty I don't recommended anybody to conduct any kind of business with him. So I believe I have found my to go to shop for auto repair from here on out!! I had been having issues with my drivers side door handle and that door getting a secure closing. I called several places to get a rough idea how much this fix could run me since I could not even find the sure problem to do the sure fix. JB was the cheapest quote per hour firstly and so I headed over. They fixed my problen in less than 15 minutes!! And then when I asked how much I owed for the service provided I was told norhing at all!! The gentleman that shared his skill with me, also allowed me to share how I prayed on the way over so that God's light would shine through me and for this not to be a huge expense. The owner if this shop has been in business for many many years and its also family run!! A fellow Christian did see God's light shining through me and since we shared God's word for a few moments, it was again sufficient enough for a huge blessing by not being charged for any service, and being safe once again.......thank you much to all involved. read more
