You get what you pay for! There's no hiding this place is pricey, but what I will say is that the food lives up to that price. The steaks, sides, desserts and drinks are all great. Which I have found not to be the case at some other high dollar steak joints. We came here for a work dinner and got the 3 course dinner with the larger steak option. First course was a lovely salad and bread appetizer. Not much to say except, I mean it was good. It's is sour dough bread, crunchy outside, fluffy inside (and in my case a bit messy) with a side of butter. Then a Caesar salad with fresh cheese and croutons. Tasty way to start a meal. Main course time. The steak was cooked to perfection and cut like butta. The scalloped potatoes were recommended by the waiter, and let me tell you. Worth the burns to my mouth. That's a warning that they come out piping hot and covered in cheese. I'm drooling thinking about it. We also had the asparagus, cus after the meat, potatoes, and cheese you have to have some greens. Even the asparagus was cooked and seasoned perfectly! Our courses ended with our choice of dessert. I got the coconut cake, my coworker got the cheesecake. We ended up taking our desserts for later since we were already stuffed. The next day we argued on who had the better dessert. While this may not be a place I personally could enjoy on my own dollar often, I do recommend it highly for special occasion and work dinners on that company dollar. MAYTAG POTATO CHIPS hand-cut potato chips, maytag blue cheese sauce. A large serving of yummy thin crisp chips with generous amounts of blue cheese sous. It is yummy & addictive! I have been going to this steakhouse for the past 5 years. They are extremely accommodating with a large party and the service is always excellent every time I come here. There is parking out front and valet parking available as well. The ambiance is very classy and it is definitely a popular spot for date nights. At my last visit, I ordered the filet combo. You get to choose between 2 sizes of steak, a seafood (crab cake, scallops, shrimp), and 2 sides. I ordered the 4 oz filet with scallops with the lobster mac and cheese and poblano au gratin potatoes. It is a generous portion of food and I had enough for leftovers the next day. The filet was tender and juicy and the scallops were soft and aromatic. The lobster mac and cheese is a $4 upcharge, but so worth it considering that there are big chunks of lobster added to the dish. The poblano au gratin potatoes was just mediocre; there was a charred layer of cheese on top which I did not care for. Had reservation at 7:30pm I waited with my family until 9:30 and we decided to leave. Why make reservations and have to wait 2hrs to be seated. As I was waiting customers who got there after us got seated, ate, then left!!! Multiple customers with reservations were waiting. One other customer left before us because he was done waiting. First time here and last, didn't even make it to a table. So unprofessional they kept telling me 5-10mins. Such a horrible experience, especially on my dads birthday!!! Came here with my husband a few weeks ago after a day of fasting. We had a great experience (apparently much better than a lot of people!)! We both went for the prixe-fixed menu. Salad: I ordered the Wedge Salad which was so delicious -- the bacon was prominent and the dressing was just the right amount. I only wish that the lettuce hadn't been a wedge and had already been cut up, but not a deal breaker. My husband went with the Maryland Crab Bisque which was great as well -- it was particularly delicious when dipping the bread in the bisque. Entree: I got the 4 oz Filet with the Bourbon Maple Shrimp and I replaced the Mashed Potatoes with Lobster Mac & Cheese (upcharge). I was a bit disappointed in the quality of the Filet but other than that I was pretty happy with everything. The Mac and Cheese was a little cold which was also disappointing. My husband got the exact same thing but he got Scallops instead of Shrimp. We were both very impressed with the Scallops as we know how many professional chefs struggle with that. This review is just for the bar area experience, not the full dining area and menu experience. We had a happy hour here after work. The bar area is really small and cramped. There's not much seating. There's a long table that runs a good portion of the length of the area that people can stand at. A few tiny tables. And then two of the corners have two small round booths that are attached by a long booth in the middle. We found it really tough to fit everyone into the area comfortably once they all arrived, especially given how crowded it got otherwise. Maybe a good place for a mid-day meeting or something, but not sure it's suitably large enough for happy hour. The prices aren't too bad. The appetizer food was just so-so. They could use some more variety in the availabilities. The best thing I had was a pretzel-encrusted onion ring. The service is speedy and friendly. They know what they're doing, and it's nice that you get a server even in the bar area. The place isn't very Yelp-friendly though, even though it offers a free appetizer with checkin. My boss was picking up the tab, so I thought I'd help him out by using my checkin free appetizer on one of the plates on the bill. When I showed my phone to the server (Jane? An older lady.), she made a stink about it and how I should've told her sooner and went on and on sort of rudely. Like, OK, first of all, you put no such instructions anywhere, secondly, why offer Yelp specials if you're then going to bitch about it? The atmosphere and settings are really nice, like they're trying to imitate Wildfire (but not quite as classy or nearly as good as Wildfire). Not a bad place. However, there was nothing special about it. I got the blue cheese chips that came with the yelp check in, but they were not that good. The chips were drenched in blue cheese. I'm not a big fan of this cheese, but I still gave it a try because they were free. I ended up picking around the cheese and eating the parts without the cheese. Even if I get them for free next time, I probably will not be getting them. They had a lot of salads to start with. The salads are basic and there is nothing special about them. They even have home made dessert for you to pick from. I got the chocolate mousse with raspberry ice cream. I traded the raspberry ice cream with vanilla. The dessert was pretty good, but again was not that special. Just a typical chocolate cake with mousse in it. Many times I get medium well or well done at other restaurants but they always seem to get it right. The steak was seasoned well & the ancho butter is to die for. I've ordered this dish before and they have yet to disappoint me. I love their sweet potato fries! They're crispy, but not oily.. And extremely addicting. Wagya Beef Burger: My co-worker ordered it medium, and this too was cooked perfectly. The shallot jam, mayo, watercress and cheese all went so well together. They offered a very nice Valentine's Day dinner, we very much enjoyed it. Yes, the place is very nice in presentation and how the walls were red covered bricks. Very cool feel. Our waiter, wish I could remember his name (I was too excited about the menu) but he was very kind and funny. He let us know the menu, and let us know that unfortunately they were of certain sides, as well as the 6oz fillet that came with the entree. Although he was very kind to substitute it for an 8oz and didn't up the price of the dish, we only paid the original price. Came in for lunch. Food and drinks came quick. Everything was good. Bar service was extremely attentive, actually had two individuals that kept checking up on us. Lunch special is quite a value. The salmon was well done, portion was much smaller than you'd expect for a normal size at restaurant. Mashed potatoes was buttery hence delicious. Lol, don't pick it if you're looking to be heathy. We were about to take advantage of the complimentary valet, when a happy hour patron came out and opened up a parking spot. The restaurant is pretty cozy feeling. I thought the grapefruit juice in my vodka/grapefruit might have been spoiled, but the boy took a taste and assured me they had just been really generous with the vodka. Yes, quite generous. I had the wedge salad, he had the carpaccio. We were both happy. I ordered the filet and crabcake combo with broccolini and lobster mac-n-cheese (small upcharge). The boy had some huge steak with smashed yukons and spinach. Both of us really enjoyed our meals. Everything was cooked perfectly. The bread was warm and crusty on the outside, soft inside. The boy had carrot cake (very good) and I had the brown velvet cake. I thought it would be like a red velvet, but not red. It was a one layer mousse-type cake concoction. I was celebrating an anniversary a week ago, and when trying to choose a new place to eat, I wasn't sure what to pick. However, I finally thought of J. Gilbert's after passing it on 123 on my way home from work every day. I did a little research online, and decided it would be the perfect place for a romantic night out. I made reservations via OpenTable, and we were quickly seated after arriving. It was a Tuesday night, but the restaurant was pretty crowded, especially in the bar area. I hadn't imagined there would be so many people there, but that is okay. Also, considering the size of their parking lot I thought I would have no problem finding a space, but ended up parking in the garage across the street. I started with the Lemon Drop martini, which included a rock candy stick - so fun! They poured the drink right at the table, which I thought was a really nice touch. They also bring out cheddar black pepper biscuits with a whipped maple butter to start with. I honestly think these were some of the best biscuits I have ever had. As I started to bite into them, they were falling apart and the butter was a perfect sweet complement. For my main course, I enjoyed the center cut filet mignon, poblano au gratin potatoes, and creamed corned with Burgers' bacon. Way too much for me to finish, but everything was absolutely delicious. The steak was cooked exactly how I had requested, and the sides were so so good. As it was our anniversary, the server comped dessert for us, and we split the apple croustade. Excellent in every way. That pretty much sums up my experience. I was visiting MacLean recently and had arranged to meet a family member for lunch. I ended up arriving ridiculously early, and it was hot and humid outside, too much so for my tender San Francisco sensibilities, and so I waited in the bar, as you do. The bartender was fabulous--a nice guy, clearly an expert at his craft. Friendly and engaging, he gave me a history of the building and the area and made me feel well taken care of during my wait. When our server, as friendly and engaging as the bartender, seated us in the dining room, she started us off with fresh, hot sourdough bread. Be still, my San Francisco heart! What a treat. My lunch companion and I ordered the same thing: petite filet, RARE, scallops, mashed potatoes, and grilled asparagus. That sweet little filet may have been the best I have ever had, and I have eaten a lot of filet. Perfectly seared on the outside and absolutely perfectly rare on the inside, it was a little piece of Heaven. My companion was in agreement. Our food was delicious and perfectly prepared, and there was just the right amount--something I appreciate. We cleaned our plates and were quite satisfied without being overly full. The creme brulee we had for dessert was as perfect in its own way as our entree--a gorgeous texture and flavor. I was particularly grateful to our server for noticing that we had lots of catching up to do, and she timed her appearances perfectly; she was at our elbow precisely when we needed something, but did not hover. The prices are not cheap, nor should they be, but I found them to be quite reasonable for the quality of the food and service. If I lived nearby, I would save my pennies and eat here every week. Outstanding special date place! My wife just returned home to Vienna after two weeks with some family illness in Colombia. The perfect place to cheer her up with romantic atmosphere, great service ( we love Joan and she perked up the night) and memorable meats! Gloria greatly enjoyed it! Not only did we have a wonderful meal but generous portions for another great meal at home. The smell of the steaks billowing smoky goodness coming to the table is utterly sensous and the taste is XXX rated! Then the next day warming up leftovers will enliven your night with the delicious aromas and tastiness! Viva J. Gilberts...so good I keep it secret from all but my very best friends. I would give NO stars if I could. We had scheduled a lunch at Gilbert's in McLean, VA on March 9, 2024. I say scheduled, we simply wanted to eat in the room on the left upon entering the restaurant. We have in the past, and no problem. This time I had to sign a contract with a required minimum of $400.00 to be spent on the meal. We had six adults and two kids coming (thus the room was great, for us and the children and other patrons). There were no people requesting this room, and we could only have it for 2 hours. That was fine. Unfortunately, the kids got sick and couldn't come, a guest coming in from NJ was taken ill on the road and returned home to her doctor. Our other guest in his 80s, not knowing what he had (cold, etc.) thought it best not to come and make the rest of us ill. I cancelled, Gilbert's said no problem, but they KEPT the $100.00 deposit. We are an older group, it happens, people get ill. We couldn't come. Gilbert's will not give me back my $100.00 deposit. It has been over a month now and I have to communicate with someone named Dorna. After 3 phone calls, and her not returning them, I stopped into the restaurant on 4/8/24 and the manager there could not help me. He called headquarters and advised me someone named Amy would call me. Instead I finally heard by e-mail from Dorna, who says I can put the $100.00 toward a meal. We will not go to Gilbert's ever again. I am not interested in eating there again, and would like my deposit back. How insensitive, how unsympathetic this restaurant is. They keep your deposit when elderly people get ill. I am so sorry they turned out to be so callous. But if the $100.00 makes them feel better and they got over on someone, so be it. Just beware if you enter into one of their contracts and you have an emergency, you will not get any caring or sympathy from the organization. P.S. I am still waiting for Amy to call me!!!!! We sat at the table for 20 mins without anyone greeting us. I had to go ask the host if someone come help us. First and second courses were both luke warm-cold, but the plates were hot. Food tasted pretty good but it was just wasn't hot, it seemed like it had been in the window for awhile. Service was pretty slow as well.
