Minute Rice (loose, water logged, not nice rice cooker type rice) Crawfish - 6 small raggedy crawfish, could have fit on heaping tablespoon Sauce - just a spicy roux.... (probably came from can or powder). Smooth like gravy--no pieces of celery, onion, green pepper. Lived in Louisiana for 5 years, this is not cajun cooking. This isn't really even cooking. I don't expect Minute Rice when ordering from a restaurant. A Swanson tv dinner version would have been better. read more

I moved to the Chattanooga area from Terre Haute, Indiana where J. Gumbo's was a common go to for my friends and I. When I knew that I would be moving, this was one of the first things I knew I would greatly miss. Heck, Gumbos was the last place I went to in Terre Haute and got double what I normally do just because I knew it'd be awhile. Though not owned by the same owner, the Hixson owners are an extremely friendly Indian couple. The service was top shelf. I knew what to expect from the food, but the service was above expectation. The Food was terrible all I could taste was old bay seasoning. The food tasted like it had been reheated from several days before in the microwave. The ice machine didn't work and the drinks all were all flat. I Was really confused because all of the good reviews maybe they just had an off day but I will not go back to find out. read more

Our new favorite local restaurant! So nice to have a reasonably priced, comfortable, fun place to eat close to home in Hixson, TN. My teenage daughter and I have been meaning to visit ever since they opened but were waiting until we could afford a dinner out. I was more than pleased with their prices, especially for the serving sizes. The owners came out and mingled with their patrons and we had a very nice conversation with them. The food was very good. My only complaint is that the spicy dish I ordered was not as spicy as I was expecting, but it made up for it in flavor. I have been missing this type of cuisine ever since I moved away from Mobile, AL (and a regular visitor of New Orleans and surrounding areas). We will DEFINITELY be visiting/eating on a regular basis. read more

Too bad I can't comment on the food, because the person at the counter couldn't take the time to take my order. The guy taking orders was too busy carrying on a lengthy conversation with the man who had ordered ahead of us. The conversation has nothing to do with the order--The guy behind the counter made eye contact with me, and that was the only acknowledgement I was given. While waiting to have my order taken, I did notice a strong ammonia/garbage smell that turned me away more than the rudeness of the staff. Highly recommend the jumbalia and the bourbon street chicken. Tried both on the sampler plate and was blown away by how good they are. My husband and I had the Creole Ratatouille tonight, because we wanted a good vegetable dish. We were not disappointed. It was great, and the manager brought his special spice mix of four different peppers to our table to try. Was spicy but did not overpower the flavors of the vegetables and rice. Simple little place, nothing fancy, but very clean. Plenty of space. They offer samples of the food so you can be assured that you will like what you get. So, if you don't like the food, it's on you. I had the Jean Lafitte (Voodoo chicken and Bumble Bee stew combo) My girlfriend and her daughter split a bowl of the gumbo. I liked everything that I tried and everything had plenty of spice without being too overpowering or too spicy in the way of heat either. It was served with a large bed of white rice and a nice sized slice of great tasting garlic buttered French bread. Overall good experience. read more

I really wanted to like this place and was excited to hear about its opening. My son, who lives in Hixson and I ate here today. Here's my opinion on the place for all interested: 1.) The parking situation is HORRIBLE! We had to park behind the place. I think I would opted for a place with easier access and better parking. 2.) They were out of Jambalaya! How disappointing. That is what my son and I both wanted. They happened to be unloading it out of the back of a car behind the restaurant where we parked, but did not have any available for us to eat. 3.) They had a 100 on the health score. That is a biggie to me. It was clean. 4.) I opted for crawfish etouffee and my son had gumbo. My etouffee looked appetizing but the portion looked small. There was plenty of rice but seriously lacking on the actual dish I wanted. Once I tasted it, it tasted not good but not bad. I'm thinking Golden Corral food bar quality, not Cajun restaurant quality. It was rather bland but still had the bite you'd expect from Cajun food. My son's gumbo was a different story. It tasted like spicy water. There was NO meat at all in it but was supposed to have sausage, chicken and shrimp I believe in it. There was nothing but broth, rice and a few pieces of vegetables was it. Both dishes came with bread that was awesome though. I will likely give this place another chance to see if it was just new restaurant flaws like so many new places experience. As it stands, I really didn't want to give 3 stars but I didn't want to give 2 either. I honestly hope they come around, I love Cajun food. read more

Eating Cajun food is a rarity for me. When I do, though, I find it delicious. Having read positive posts about the Voodoo chicken, I wanted to form my own opinion. I have had Po'Boy sandwiches before, but not quite like this. The Voodoo chicken was good and hot. It was poured over an oversized piece of bread; loaf may be a more appropriate word rather than piece. If you enjoy a bit of spice, you'll enjoy this. This particular dish wasn't the most delicious Cajun food, but not awful enough to keep me from returning to try other menu items. read more

I finally had a chance to try this place for lunch. I'm a big NOLA fan and love Cajun food. I had the Drunken Chicken and the wife had the gumbo. Both portions were extremely generous. My dish has the right amount of spice though the chicken was a bit stringy. Very good though. The gumbo also had right amount of kick. I would like to have seen more protein in the dish. I really wanted to like this place because it's close to my house and also something different. When we got there we saw orders going out like crazy so we thought it would be fast. We ordered and ended up waiting 25 minutes. My husband wanted to go ask and I said just be patient they must be having to make something. When we did ask, the girl got smart with us saying she called our number twice then threw our food out and then another girl came over and said they were out of what I had ordered?!? So which one? We were definitely paying attention for our number which was never called. When we did eventually get our food it was very tasty. On a side note, I would definitely not take my kids here. They play loud rap music with a lot of curse words. Without the mishap and the music I would have given 3 stars. Hopefully they'll improve and I can do another review. read more

Great tasting roux and just the right amount so you never encounter "dry" rice. Excellent portion size at a reasonable price. Friendly owner who will gladly let you sample any of their dishes. Worst food I ever had! I ordered an oyster platter 1/2 pound price15.99. Tax and all 17.47. I got one side of coleslaw and that was all, no fries nothing! Those tiny little oysters (we called them culls as a kid) were fried in some awful tasting oil. Overall, I left most of it on the plate and paid my bill. There was ONE employee who was the waitress, cook and probably the dish.washer. To further complicate the matter, she was of Indian descent and had little English capabilities. For the money I paid, I could have (and should have) gone to Red Lobster, Olive Garden or any number of other restaurants. Don't waste your money because it is not a good deal at all. read more

The colorful atmosphere, smell of good spices clean aroma's busting from everywhere all the way to the counter to order. The greeting from the owners just inviting,pleasant, so helpful. Fun atmosphere and excellent food! I enjoyed the crawfish etoufee which was cooked and seasoned very well. The fried shrimp po' boy was fantastic. It was a huge sandwich, the homemade remoulade was great, and there were tons of jumbo fried shrimp. The French bread it's served on is also very good. Our experience here wasn't as good as I wanted it to be. The rice was cooked to gruel and made for a weird texture. The flavors were ok, but when something says hot or spicy we tend to have a different perception than others must have because this didn't taste like either to us. read more

Visiting my in laws from Las Vegas, was browsing around on Yelp and found J Gumbo's about 5 minutes away. I had the Creole Ratatouille and my husband ordered the Crawfish etouffe (very good btw). Got there close to closing time so they gave us all the etouffe that was left which was very nice. Chit chatted with the owner for a little bit, he was extremely kind.
