I go with the former because I'm an adult (this is a dig at my soft-serve loving wife), and I went wild this time with the Deep Sea Treasure (caramel ice cream with salty caramel swirls and caramel sea salt truffles). I like salty with my sweet, and it was amazing...the salt content means it's also the fastest melting ice cream known to man, so be warned. My kids got soft serve swirls with rainbow sprinkles, because they are tiny little girls and that's what they do. The younger one got mad at absolutely nothing and threw hers on the ground about a minute after we gave it to her, and then stole handfuls of her older sister's because she's a savage. But everyone enjoyed the stop, because ice cream on a hot day is one of life's great pleasures. Don't deny yourself. Come to the Dairy Carnival. It's a classic All-American spot staffed that we were glad to find: they've got burgers, fries, onion rings, hot dogs, chicken fingers, and ice cream, served by friendly teenage girls. It's creamy with the peanut butter flavor but not overwhelming. The cone does seem to be a little small for all that ice cream, so don't dilly-dally too much eating it in warm weather. Since some other parlors near me have closed, Scoups has become by default the closest ice cream spot to me that makes their own hard ice cream. This is not a bad thing. It's also not bad that it's not too far away from Wolf Road, and it becomes a convenient spot for dessert after dinner nearby.

But I did finally stop by for some of the famous desserts/ ice cream. Service was great. The young man at the service window made a number of very helpful suggestions, especially after I mentioned that I've begun to show a bit of dairy sensitivity if I have ice cream late at night. So I tried the nondairy Dole pineapple whip in a cup. It was delicious. My friend had a double scoop of chocolate ice cream in a waffle cone. That was delicious, too. I tried some. There were many customers. Since Guptill's is widely considered a Capital Region institution, I'm slightly embarrassed that I haven't visited before. The ice cream stand is large and clean. The staff is young and courteous. I can't explain why I haven't been to the rink yet since I skate pretty well. Perhaps I've just been busy. Still, this was a good start. I ordered a Jack Burger which consists of double hamburger patties covered in cheese and coleslaw on a bun. While the patties look flat they are tasty and very filling. I also had some fries, which were very good. I was stuffed. The 2 Jack Burgers--one for a friend-- fries and two fountain drinks ran me $26. Not bad. I was there for an early dinner at about 4:30pm. I've been warned that the lines can get very long. My friends suggested in order to avoid crowds I'm best off showing up at off hours. It was a fun experience. I finally get it. This a bit of Americana and those burgers taste good, too.

The flavors could have been a little stronger too, though the stuff in the special flavors (e.g., the Moose Tracks), made up for it. This is a fine place to go if you're looking for a meal with ice cream, or mini-golf plus food or drink. Then again, there's nothing else like it for many miles in any direction.
