Noelle's Yelp Notebook 2015 After a nice Sunday evening visit with my parents we arrived home only to find our garage door not working. After speaking with our neighbor he gave us a recommendation. I woke up early this morning and looked up different garage door repair people near the Willow Glen area of San Jose. After reviewing the person my neighbor went with (Arrowhead Garage) and seeing how many Yelpers said he wasn't customer service friendly I continued on my Yelp search and found 'J Pena's Overhead Doors.' After reading the 44 positive Yelp reviews on J Pena's Overhead Doors, I promptly gave them a call at 8 a.m. this morning. The person I spoke with was professional, friendly and efficient. I was given a time frame of 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Mr. Pena called when they arrived. The father and son duo did a thorough job from start to finish. They identified the problem, replaced the worn gear, tightened any parts of our garage that needed tightening, oiled parts of our garage and had it working in a reasonable amount of time. The prices are fair and they accept cash, check or credit card. Our receipt was emailed promptly to us and we have a one year warranty on the work. You can clearly see that this family owned business takes pride in their work and provides excellent customer service. They are licensed to do their work. John and Ruben Pena did a great job. They came out on short notice and lubricated the screw-drives on our two garage doors. After asking about what could be done about the noise John suggested that our 20 year old rattling metal rollers could be replaced with nylon rollers cutting the noise down significantly and last longer. They didn't have them on the truck that day so they came back the next day and finished the job. I am very pleased with the pricing, quality of work performed and their friendliness. Our garage door was screaming and grinding every time it opened and closed. We called J Pena's Overhead Doors to get a tune up. They came over and investigated our door for about 20 minutes. Finally they said that they had greased the hinges but our door was cracked, the track was in bad shape and it wouldn't make sense to pay for a tune up. My garage door broke this past week and I checked everything (the power plug, circuit breakers, connections, etc.). No luck. Finding a company to repair the garage door was difficult and one of the top rated Yelp companies, Wright Garage Doors, never returned phone calls. Flash forward to J. Pena's Overhead Doors. Not only were they able to schedule an appointment the same day to fix my door, but when they arrived, the garage door worked!! Flabbergasted, I went through a couple of possible scenarios and decided that a circuit breaker switch I had missed had probably shut it off. They were completely understanding and did not pressure me at all. They said I could replace my very old unit, get a service, or just wait til mine finally did break. In the end, I opted to see how much longer my machine would last. Five stars for the professional, no pressure service, and the honest assessment. Our garage door failed by ripping the bolts that hold it into the house out of the wood. It was wedged in sideways. On the recommendation of my father-in-law I called J. Pena's. Even though it was Sunday evening, he came out right away to have a look. He wasn't able to fix it on the spot because he needed some helpers, but he was able to fix it promptly. The fix involved completely replacing the piece of wood that the door was screwed into. I was shocked that the charge was only $190. Service this good, affordable, and competent is hard to find. Our screw-drive door opening/closing system failed one Saturday and Pena came on Sunday morning to estimate a new system, bid competitively, and made the installation of a belt-drive system (much quieter, included an external key pad) on Monday. I have purchased a garage door motor from Costco and I needed someone to install it right away. I called J. Pena and they always responded promptly. On the day I received the motor, I called them at 1:00 and within 3 hours, they came to my house and installed the motor and the additional features that came with it. They even programmed the controls in my wife car. I was impressed with their professionalism and how meticulously they worked. They also looked at my garage door and replaced some of the nuts and bolts that were missing and adjusted the door itself. All for $125 but with the advance promotion on Yelp, it only cost me $100.. Outstanding service! I gave them a call and left a message about an issue with the tension on my garage door opener. John called back about an hour later and we set a time for him to come out the next afternoon at 5pm. Shortly before our agreed time, Rueben called to say he was on his way but would be late because he had just finished his previous job and traffic would make it take a while for him to get to me. I love that he called in advance, he didn't just show up late or no show. Great communication is so hard to find these days so it really stands out when a contractor does the basics of courtesy. It was getting late in the evening and many contractors would say it was too late and we'd have to reschedule. Not Rueben, he didn't mind working late. Great work ethic. He took at look at it, knew exactly what to do, took care of it in about 20 minutes and now the door is working better than ever and is so smooth it barely makes a sound. He even lubricated my other garage door just because he was there. When I asked him how much, it was a totally reasonable price for the visit. I was super happy with his service and price. I previously had tried to get someone else to fix this same problem, but that guy no-showed 3 times. He needs to take a lesson from Rueben. On Sunday, our garage door spring broke a couple hours before we were supposed to leave for an important engagement. We might have been able to wait but our door is so heavy that my wife could not lift it herself, so the next day she would have had to park her car on the street until the door got fixed. I called up FIVE different places (that showed up higher up on Yelp's list) and nobody answered in spite of saying they were '24-7', and only one of them called back. I don't blame them, it was *Palm Sunday* after all which is important to many people, but I'm very glad I called the sixth person, Mr John Pena. He got in contact with me less than 10 minutes later, and within an hour he was replacing my garage door spring. Done and done! John is the man. I collided into my garage door with my car, and caused damage to the door, which only got worse when the tension in the wire further warped the door. I called John on Tuesday afternoon, and he met me after work at 6:30PM to check the door out. He quickly found out the door was no longer being manufactured and the only way to fix the individual panel would be to work it back into shape, or set me back $1500+ to replace my entire garage door system. Understanding that it would be hard for me to meet during regular business hours as commute to and from San Francisco for work, John called his friend at 7PM, and fixed the garage door back to a near normal state as if he were a magician. The door works just as well as it used to, and the damage is hardly noticeable. Beyond the actual work, John was understanding that I didn't have the cash amount on me or a checkbook, and told me that he would call the following day and take a credit card transaction over the phone which he did do, and though I am generally worried about my card details being shared over the phone, John and Reuben didn't charge a penny extra. In fact, the price quoted was infinitely cheaper than an entirely new garage door system ($1500+), and nearly one third the cost of buying an individual panel or two ($250 a piece). Had Mr. Pena install a new garage door. He came out promptly and gave me a verbal quote, telling me he could install it two days later. Sure enough, he was at my door promptly at 9am, two days later. The install was done by one of his staff, but was very good with helping me to move a few things out of the way, removing the old door, installing the new one, and cleaning up afterwards. My only complaint was that he didn't install the vents on the same day; he had to come back a couple of days later for that install. Also, the vents didn't come with a screen to keep out bugs and leaves. That should have been standard. I would recommend Mr. Pena as being a very reliable, honest man with a very good business. read more

In San Jose California I got my garage door installed by Ruben last October 2017 and they did a great job. December rolls around and my wife is at home with my youngest daughter. I was away out of state with my two other kids in Memphis. The garage door opener decided to stop working. I was trying to walk my wife thru trouble shooting but it was very successful. We ended up calling Ruben and he said he could come within the hour and he did. When he got there the garage worked just fine of course.
