Previously I had a great experience at J Peter's, this time not so much. We arrived at 5:20 PM (party of five) on a Thursday. The server was able to seat us within 15 minutes which was great. That's when the wheels came off. Our waitress was below average at best. The whole restaurant was slammed and trying to support each other. They seemed to be doing a great job for the most part. Our meals had at least a 50 minute ticket time. Two early bird prime rib meals, a prime rib sandwich and two early bird seafood meals. Absolutely no reason for the delay. We heard from our waitress that our meals were next only to blame a supervisor on the delay, twice. I was almost in the restaurant for over 2 hours, a complete misfire. Multiple tables arrived after us but got their food before us. I'll be looking at other Murrels Inlet options before going back to J. Peter's. Tonight was a trainwreck. read more

Went here on Sunday July 27th 2025 with my parents and aunt, for some dinner. Parked across the street, and walked inside the restaurant. Said we were a party of 4, and was seated right away in a booth. Our server was very nice and made sure to constantly check on us. He was also very pleasant as well. We all started with 4 waters, and I had the J Peter's punch. We also started with honey croussaints, and BBQ Nachos. The appetizers came out in a timely manner, and was enjoyable! For entrees, I had a prime rib sandwich, my mom had the same thing. My aunt got this blackened tuna sandwich, and my dad got a pasta. I enjoyed my prime rib sandwich, My mom said that hers didn't taste as a good as last time, my aunt enjoyed her tuna sandwich, and my dad also enjoyed his pasta. The kitchen was firing, our server wasn't, and the manager made it worse. My family has been vacationing and owning property in the Surfside, Garden City, Murrells Inlet area for three generations, and we've been eating at J Peters since they relocated to Murrells Inlet in 2020. Tonight was our last visit. The food wasn't the issue. Our server and the manager were. We came in at 5:40 PM specifically for the early bird prime rib (ends at 6:00). Placed the whole order at once. My wife pointed at the early bird and asked about it. I ordered the same. The appetizer came out fine. After that, our service fell apart, and it had nothing to do with the kitchen. Food was running out of the back for every other table the entire night. The server next to us was attentive and fast. Ours was rarely at the table, slow on refills, brought my wife the wrong drink and barely acknowledged the mistake. A table seated 15 minutes after us got their entrees out 20 minutes before we did. Our prime rib took about 25 minutes after the salad plates were cleared. Med rare prime rib is already cooked, sliced to order, plated. Total visit for fried shrimp and prime rib was an hour and a half. The bill came with the 14 oz prime rib instead of the 9 oz early bird. Server's excuse: she waited too long to ring it in, so the system locked at 6:04. That's on her. We were sitting there fully ordered well before the cutoff. The manager came over, gave a different version of the story than the server had just told us, blamed our appetizer for the entree delay (which makes no sense since every other table around us was running app, salad, entree just fine), dismissed our concerns, dropped $10 off the check, and walked off. Both my wife and I worked in restaurants for years. I wasn't asking for money off, I was asking to be heard. The food and the kitchen were not the problem. Our server was, and the manager doubled down instead of listening. Three generations of regulars in this area, and that's what ended this for us. read more

Lunch while visiting the area with my brother in law brought us to this place on a sunny afternoon. However the knats and flies were also on the outdoor patio so we moved indoors, where there were a few other diners. Our lunches were served quickly and the food was good. The server was fairly good to start out, however the prime rib was the worst cut of meat I have ever been presented with, ever. It was obviously not what prime rib should ever look like. Our server was busy but attentive. My only issue was that as someone who has worked in quality establishments, a server's job includes making sure everything arrives as ordered and tastes as expected--while managing outsized expectations as needed--and following up with the kitchen or management, if necessary. My friend and I both got the prime rib, and wished we hadn't. We left most of it on the plate. There was no follow up as to why neither of us ate it until we had paid. We should've spoken up. To be honest, it was the weirdest steak I have ever tried to eat. The portion size was huge, HUGE, however the "medium rare" was a solid gray-dirty pink, with no fresh au jus or blood visible on, inside, or around the meat. The texture was a weird, chewy, thick sponginess that was unpalatable. We suspected the meat had been frozen and reheated. The off-color made us wonder if it had been reheated sous vide somehow, in an instant-type of beef broth. It was bizarrely dense and spongy, no separation of muscle fiber in the beef, with a very strong, uniform flavor. The taste was mushroom/beef dry soup mix, perhaps something used to give the steak a shot of what it should have had quite naturally. It was just plain weird. We had eaten so much seafood recently we wanted a break. A friend had mentioned they'd been to the restaurant before, so we took a chance on the beef. Yes, on the marsh walk, so we blame ourselves for the bad choice. Not sure how the seafood is here, but stay away from the prime rib. Salad, potatoes, drinks? On point. However based on this experience I would never go back. Maybe it was because they were coming off of the bike thing earlier in the month, or maybe the prime rib is always mystery meat. I was on vacation when I discovered this great restaurant. Being 5:00 in the summer, it was of course very busy. We were seated quite quickly, and served drinks in a few minutes. We ordered our food and waited a good bit before being served. In the meantime I looked out over the beautiful view of the ocean. Once we were served our dinner I immediately dived in and was greeted with some of the best chicken tenders in the world. I was given so many fried I was overwhelmed. The chicken tenders were crispy and amazing. The fries were well seasoned. Now let's talk about the service. Our waiter may have well just run a 5k. Neither is clearly mentioned on the menu. The "tax" is not a tax, but just an extra charge the place adds and tries to make it look like it is something the gov't adds. Totally sketch! Then they charge for credit card. That's a cost of doing business just like the lights, phone, pos system, gas for the stove, rent, etc. How about the customers start charging a waiting fee or menu reading fee. Just as ridiculous. My husband and I rarely go out to eat, but we had some extra cash and decided to treat ourselves. Unfortunately, this experience was very disappointing. I ordered a Prime Rib sandwich with French fries. I expected sliced prime rib, but what I received was chopped meat that didn't look fresh, and the bread was soggy. The fries were extremely greasy. My husband ordered the crab cakes with loaded mashed potatoes, and he didn't enjoy his meal either. I must say our Server was so nice and felt very bad. We barely touch our food. Checked out this restaurant on the Marsh Walk in Murrells Inlet. Saturday afternoon four adults and we had three early bird specials. Greeted by pleasantly by Sean and were promptly served dinks and orders taken in a timely fashion. Outdoor seating was clean and a great view. Three salad's with the house dressing arrived and the forks were flying. Ample size salad and a very tasty dressing on the side. One grilled salmon , one seared tuna , and a fried shrimp early bird dinner. The fourth had a huge bowl of potato soup. I had a taste of the tuna ate the salmon and reports on the shrimp and soup was two thumbs up. Rumor has it that these were smaller portions because of the early bird. It was past my lunch time by a couple of hours and this was a good size portion on both fishes and shrimp. Sides were loaded mashed ,collard greens ,and broccoli. All very good. Unfortunately no room for deserts but maybe next time....and there will be a next time for sure. Give this one a try. I think you'll enjoy it. read more

7.1.23 My husband found this restaurant after doing a search online for a place for our family to have dinner on our last night on vacay in SC. We were a bit concerned after my SIL saw recent reviews in which several yelpers rated them 1 star. It took about 30 minutes for the availability of a table to accommodate our party of 10. The table was seated in the lobby to the right. While we waited, we perused the menu and also went to the bar to order drinks, 4 orange crushes and my pina colada. When our table was available, our server got our order for drinks. After she brought them out, my niece told our server that her ice tea wasn't sweetened so our server replaced it. It was a while before she returned again after bringing out our drinks. We tried looking for her, but to no avail. She eventually came back and took our order. We placed our order. Each entree came with a salad and a honey-butter croissant that was out of this world. Everyone in my fam raved about it. The kids were fighting over them. Our server saw this and brought out some additional ones for them. I thought that was so attentive and thoughtful of her to do so. I was bent out of shape that I only got three croutons and one of my nieces had eight. Lol. Call me food greedy! For my entree, I ordered the baby back ribs with sweet potato fries. Sauced ribs are hit or miss with me, fortunately they were a hit to me. I loved them! I was worried I wouldn't have room to finish them, but I like most of the time, I managed to. Everyone in my fam enjoyed their entrees. The only real complaint I heard was the slow service. There is a bar and outdoor seating that overlooks the Murrells Inlet Marshwalk ( a half-mile wooden boardwalk along a natural saltwater estuary). We decided to visit J Peters for my wife's birthday, and the meal did not disappoint. Our waiter did an excellent job of taking care of us and our meals were excellent. We both started our meal with a tasty house salad with blue cheese dressing and a freshly baked honey drizzled croissant. My wife selected the loaded mashed while I tried the loaded baked potato as my side and both were quite tasty. We both decided on the Prime Rib early bird entree and they both were tender and delicious. We celebrated by sharing the strawberry croissant for dessert. We ordered "Early Bird Specials" because these are delicious entrees at surprisingly reasonable prices. Seems that everyone loves the big honey croissant that comes with each salad. Order your green salad with the mix of honey mustard and bacon bits in oil. The two flavors are so very good and a customer favorite. Laura enjoyed her crab cakes, and Mark enjoyed his sirloin steak. We both ordered the mountain of loaded mashed potatoes as our sides. We anticipate anyone will enjoy this location on the "Marshwalk", the food, the speedy service, and the affordable prices. This was my first visit and it came highly recommended by some dear friends. We met them for dinner and we were seated by the window upstairs with a perfect view. We ordered the salmon with potato and salad. The side salad was excellent and had a delicious croissant on the side. The salmon was flavored and seasoned well but it was over cooked for my taste. My family members have been regular customers in Murrells Inlet even before they moved to MarshWalk and have always loved it. Tonight was the opposite. My sister, who was so looking forward to a ribeye, specifically asked for it as medium rare. The first one arrived well done and the bartender who was quite gracious offered to take it back. The second one arrived and she couldn't even cut it. She took two bites and gave up. The bartender asked her if there was a problem and she meekly told him she couldn't cut it. He took it away. Immediately, the General Manager came out and arrogantly told her he wasn't eating the cost of two steaks. I asked him 3 times if he could try to cut it himself and he refused and then asked her if she wanted to take it or not and made it clear he was going to still charge her full price. We won't be back. We will miss it but won't miss the General Manager. read more
