We ordered rice cake here to celebrate our twins' 100-Day. I knew this was a mom and pop shop and there was no menu that I could find anywhere, so we went in to talk to the shop owner about our options. We were a little surprised when we walked in. There were no displays to speak of. It felt like walking directly into the kitchen, with commercial equipment all around. There was a single lady sitting at the front distributing pre-ordered trays. Even though she spoke fluent English, I don't think I would have been able to order without my Korean husband. There really is no menu and for someone that is not Korean like me and may need some more handholding in terms of what rice cakes there are and what is in them, there was quite a barrier to entry. For her part, the lady tried her best to be helpful, even pulling out pictures on her iPhone to show me the different types of rice cakes. The minimum quantity for pre-order is 10lb trays. There isn't an option to mix and match rice cakes, you have to order 10lbs of each one that you want. In the end, we opted for gyeondan (rice cake balls covered in assorted bean or sesame powder) so that there could be some variety in the tray. If you don't want 10lbs (understandable), you can call in to see what types of rice cakes other people have pre-ordered that day, and they can make a few extra for you. To my understanding, you can't reserve this, it is first come first serve. The cost is dependent on what type of rice cake you order, but ranges from $90-100ish per tray. The gyeondan were so delicious! You could tell the rice cake was made fresh because it was so soft and chewy. The red bean paste inside was subtlely sweet. My husband's favorite flavor was the black sesame and mine was the mung bean. We also saved the injeolmi powder to put on vanilla ice cream YUM. We can't decide if the reddish/brown powder was red bean powder or cinnamon, but it was also very good. The lady was also kind enough to throw in a few complimentary baekseoulgi for us. It had a slightly salty forward flavor that was followed by a light sweetness. So good! I would highly recommend JR Bakery for your traditional rice cake needs, especially for big parties. You have to eat the rice cakes quick or freeze them if you're not going to eat them immediately as they will go stale and harden...or grow mold. read more

I called here a couple times and the lady who answered spoke limited English. I came here on a weekday morning around 8AM which is the time they listed as open. The door was locked, so I had to call to let the lady know I was there. Still confusion, so I just rang the doorbell at the front and she let me in. The rice cakes are around $8 and were super fresh/warm when I bought them. I tried the red bean one (tasted more savory), the plain rice cakes (ended up being my favorite given the very very subtle sweetness and chewy texture), and the peanut one. Just celebrated Korean new year with my son's school by reading a book and bringing in rice cake from here! Ordered the honey rice cake balls that come in three colors - so good and perfect - like a soft Korean gusher! The ingredients are rice flour, sugar, salt, soybean oil, and water and luckily we had no allergies in the class. It was a big hit with the teachers and staff. And of course the kids! Even some non Asian kids asked for seconds! For orders, you have to order 10 pounds (each packet is a pound) minimum for $95. But if you don't want that much, you can call the week of and ask them what they have that week and then order then (they bake the goods depending on the demand that week). Ordered a birthday rice cake for baby birthday party and was told I could pick it up around 11 the day of the party and purchase additional rice cakes at that time. They don't take small orders but they said they would have some smaller portions available for purchase when I pick up. Again, they knew what time I was coming and assured me I could pick up additional rice cake. When I arrived to pick up at 11, there was a customer ahead of me who was obviously a regular - the cashier and the customer were holding hands and chatting it up. After the customer left with a small bag of rice cakes, I told her I was here to pick up the rice cake and some smaller portions of rice cake. I was told I was late and they had no small portions available. They said I should have ordered in advance (something I was specifically told I couldn't do for small orders) - even tho they usually have extras, they sold out today. They said they would have set some aside but they didn't because I came late. But obviously they had something available for the customer that was there when I showed up. So whatever they say, order what you need because there aren't any other nearby options for rice cake (trust me, I looked). Yum, the fresh rice cakes are amazing. If you go early, they have a great selection of fresh rice cakes, but as a small store, they will have a lot of option when you go towards the afternoon and on. Once, they had some rice cake leftover from the day before and they sold it with a HUGE discount! I definitely scooped some day old rice cakes along with the fresh ones since I can always steam most of the old rice cakes and it's still good. I keep picking up different styles of rice cakes every visit. Came here to pick up some Korean goodies before hanging out with a friend. When I walked in, the shop/kitchen was dim so I thought it was closed. You're basically walking straight into the kitchen so don't be shocked - you're in the right place. Near the cash register are the rice cakes on sale for the day. The lady that was present pointed out which ones were the day-old ones. I chose 2 fresh packs. I noted that there was no menu/price tags anywhere. The lady confirmed that it was cash only. When I asked for the total cost, she said $11. I remember all the other reviews saying it was $5 each, so I asked her if it was actually $5. I noticed that she hesitated and then she said that it's $5.50 each, but while I was taking time to dig out money from my wallet, she then said that she'd give me a $1 discount for a total of $10. Not sure if the prices have just gone up or if she was just trying to charge me more since I couldn't speak Korean. The rice cakes are pretty yummy but harden and get moldy (if not refrigerated) in 1-3 days. My friend and I couldn't finish all of them in time, so we suggest buying only what you can eat. read more

I was here last week for Korean rice cakes, aka dduk. Having dduk is a New Year's tradition for Koreans, and we came by to ring in the New Year. The customer service was incredible. J.R. just makes korean rice cakes. the rice cakes are made right behind the sales counter. everything is done in this one room business: storage, sales, manufacturing, packaging etc.... korean rice cakes (dduk) are half moon shaped pastries it's texture is similiar to japanese mochi. a thin coat of sesame oil gives it a savory and tangy taste. within the dduk is red bean paste. dduk comes in colours of pink, white, and greyish black. each package has about 25 pieces (4.50) korean markets have this near the cashier. but i never bought one. got one here since i know it's fresh, they sell out daily.. there are several versions of rice cakes. the plain white ones in stick shape et al. are used in cooking. the multicolored ones i got were the pastry/confection items. i couldn't stop eating them, so it's 5 stars :) read more

Prices are reasonable and unlike supermarket dduk, you are guaranteed freshness and the best ingredients. Personally, our family shops here and I've attended dols (1 year birthday party for Koreans), han-gahp (60 year bday), weddings, memorial services that have catered various rice cakes from here and everyone always says it's so good. Freshness is key as Korean markets have dduk that were delivered who knows when and sitting out for who knows how long. They have all varieties - filled with red bean, with sweet sesame filling, various beans or powder on the outside. they sell powders and plain jane dduk for soups or just to fry up and eat with some honey. YUM. If you have a hankering for some rice cake make your way here. Don't settle for day old stale rice cakes. Call ahead if you want to ensure your favorite is there at the end of the day. A small mom & pop place. The lady who helped me was very nice and informative. There were two counters - one with the fresh items and one with the day olds (half price). The lady was very honest and when I went to grab something on a lower shelf, she told me that it was more than a day old and that I probably didn't want it. Not really better than what you get from Korean supermarkets (which probably buy from them anyway), but $5 per pack certainly is cheaper. I ended up eating most of the 2 packs, family doesn't like it much. One of the pack of cakes gotten so hard that it ended up in the trash, I would say if you happen to drop by then try it (and yell very very loud at the back since there's really nobody at the front), and don't buy more than you want to try, unless you are really a fan. Another East Bay gem. They have a variety of rice cakes but the availability depends on what they made for that day. I've actually eaten the half moon shaped rice cakes filled with red bean from here for years. I recently tried the ones with more nuts/grains and they were good, but could've been a tad bit more soft. They also carry regular rice cakes for you to cook with. This is a no frills shop with mostly machinery in sight, and then a little counter with what they're selling for the day. One of the reasons why I was excited about moving to Hayward was the sheer fact that I would be living closer to this place. Their rice cakes are fresh and their party trays are cheap. They do everything in house, so a lot of times when I go, the rice cakes are warm b/c they just made it. We also used them for our wedding, and it was a huge hit. Anything you get there will be good. My personal favorite is the long strips of rice cakes covered in beans. All of their rice cakes are chewy and melt in your mouth good. I've lived in the LA area, and I have to say that this place beats any place in LA Korea town. This dduk slays its competition, and probably would do so even if relocated to New Jersey or Los Angeles. My Sacramento-resident parents followed a church tip that J.R. in Hayward had the Bay's best and relatively inexpensive dduk. So off we went. Store interior was truly bare bones, consisting of a counter, register, and long steel prep table where one of the proprietors was busy cutting warm dduk and rolling them into powder. No drinks, no chopsticks, and since this was Alameda, no plastic bags. Just dduk, dduk, and dduk. Bought four assorted packages ($4-5), and plowed into them as we walked out the door. They were incredibly soft and just a bit sweet (a bit less salty than those in San Jose, less sweet than in Palisades Park/Fort Lee (New Jersey). Eventually walked all the way to Starbucks across the street to finish them with a tall glass of milk. Unfortunately, the dduk is a ephemeral blast of perfection. I actually didn't get to go in the store, so I can't talk about the service, or the store itself. I was parked outside while my friends went in to get some food. After moving to Hayward I finally stopped into this place after passing it a number of times in my random travels about town. I was SUPER excited to see a Korean Bakery because I've missed Hodduk SOOO much since visiting Korea last year. However, I've been told, to my sad sad fortune, that no one in Norcal makes it fresh. The adjuma(middle aged lady) in the shop saw the epic heartbreak on my face(if you've ever had hodduk, you understand) and insisted I take a package of multicolored rice cakes for free. This place's dduk is insanely good and way better than the ones you can get at a Korean supermarket for a cheaper price on top of that. They do get hard pretty quickly possibly because of less additives, but that's actually the stage when they get even better. Just fry them on a frying pan till they soften up and get crispy and eat them with some maple syrup. It's my absolutely favorite way to eat them and they're so delicious. Walking into JR Rice Cake Bakery felt like walking onto the set of Breaking Bad. Is this a meth lab? Oh no, just something as addictive, rice cakes! This operation is really mainly for large scale production, not something designed for walk-in sales. What's available is a small selection of cling wrap trays on a counter. When I visited there was a choice of only three rice cakes. I chose the package of green, white, and pink rice cakes. These are Korean rice cakes so I wasn't used to it. I'm used to Chinese and Japanese. I could tell the rice cakes are fresh but it just didn't do it for me. They were way too rubbery and chewy. My jaw definitely got a workout. After about two I was ready to load the rice cakes into a paintball gun and do some target practice. read more
