I want to give this place 4 stars. Rosa is amazing. A great hair stylist. Her cut was amazing and I wish I could go back to her. The people there are very friendly and the new location is great. I unfortunately had a bad color job. Emily is very sweet and I think she is a good colorist but the color on my hair just wasn't good. Maybe I got her on an off day or maybe she's not the best at Bayalage. I went in asking for Bayalage and her explanation of it seemed she new what she was doing. We were going to do blonde into Carmel colors. After 3.5 hrs I emerged with orange tips. I did not state I was in happy. I left not happy but when I got home with closer examination I saw that there was no blend it was just a straight line of orange tips. Again this is a hard thing to do and I understand not everyone is great at it. My complaint is she let me leave without admitting it was bad. I think any stylist would have known this is not right. I had my friends pointing out everything that was wrong. I would have gone back and even paid for a correction if she would have admitted defeat and said it didn't work. Instead she said it was fun and she loved it. I have now decided to eat the cost And go to another salon. That being said, I would still recommend this studio. Rosa is great and even Emily I'm sure is a great colorist. I just hope next time this happens she will correct it and not let the customer walk out with orange spotty tips. read more

I followed both Michael and Leslie over from Elevation to J. Roland and just paid them a visit this morning. For a variety of reasons, I hadn't had my hair worked on in about 6 months, so I came in with some major work to be done: a touch up on my color/highlights from Michael and an even more desperate need for a haircut from Leslie. Both of them sat down with me before the work got started, and we went through the game plan as to how we wanted to tackle the color I was looking for and the cut I was envisioning. So some background on me, I have very long, thick Asian hair that's been highlighted different shades of brown. I told Michael that I wanted something a little bit edgier in terms of color, and since summer's right around the corner, I wanted to go a little lighter on the highlights. At the same time, I told Leslie I was looking for a way to keep my long hair, but also get rid of all the dead stuff and add in thick layers. The meeting of the minds resulted in highlights that were a little lighter and blend and/or ombre itself with my existing color. The haircut would be done so that it frames the colors better, brings out more body/texture to my long hair, and cut away the dead stuff. The result: absolute brilliance. Both Michael and Leslie are masters of their craft, and are definitely artists in the way they can see things and put it together (while talking to each other!). I've been seeing Michael for over two years now, and he knows how to take your interests and ideas and put it together into something beautiful. He's very particular on the type of color he wants involved, and I give him total trust when he makes recommendations. This is the second time Leslie has cut my hair, and I couldn't think of a better person who I trust to take scissors to one of my favorite characteristics about myself. Leslie has amazing attention to detail, and will always ask you for your opinion before starting. The minute I walk through those salon doors, I put all my faith into both Michael and Leslie. As a small side note, the new salon looks amazing! I love the big beautiful windows that allow in so much natural light! I do miss their little cafe that used to have food and drinks to order though. It's definitely deceiving from the outside, and especially it being in Crocker Galleria, you wouldn't think the salon looks the way it does. Anyway, I love both Michael and Leslie so much! Every time I have come I've been heard, and walk out feeling like my hair is beyond my expectations. I love that they offer conditioning treatments from Kerastase- wish I could afford them always. Leslie Chin is a true stylist. She is a hair expert and her passion to provide a cut with cutting edge style, versatility and precision was obvious as soon as I sat down for my first consult. I moved up here from SoCal and have been looking for a stylist who understands how texturize hair be it a short or long so that I can get structure and volume when I want to style it, yet that is low maintenance so on days when I'm in a hurry I can give it a quick wash and blow dry and be out the door. I, myself, know hair well and use it to accessorize my look, so when it comes to hair stylists I can be pretty selective. Leslie has cut my hair twice and done pristine work! I have Asian hair that was cut in an A-line bob with lots of short layers before I came to Leslie. It somehow had grown out really boxy in the back and I was transitioning to mid-length hair but it was at that stage where it's annoying on the nape of your neck and just tends to look funny. I asked for a cut that when grown out wouldn't look hideous and she not only re-shaped my cut buy create an entirely different look that better suited my face. She cut it so well that I could've gone another month longer before my second visit, but I loved what she did so much I went back early to have her freshen up the look for a trip I was going on. Whether you need a classic cut with long layers or a sassy fashion-forward cut like mine, Leslie rocks! I've seen her tame, cut and style so many different types of hair. Her experience and hair education stand out, and I'm glad I finally found someone in the bay area who I can entrust my lovely do to. Leslie is a pro and she is super nice and super fun to work with. Leslie is the Trifecta: CREATIVITY, SKILL, and GOOD "bedside/salonchairside" manner. One more thing, the salon is clean, well run, and efficient. Love this place! read more

The salon I've going to for the last 4 years didn't open after restrictions were lifted. Desperate to get a cut and colour I booked in with Roland and Elkin. The salon was clearly carefully following social distancing guidelines which was important to me. In terms of their work: Roland's cut was amazing. It's so well done I can step out of the shower, let it air dry and it still looks fantastic. I'm really picky about my colour but Elkin's balayage was flawless. Add to that they were both lovely people and sitting chatting while they worked their magic was enjoyable. The only downside was parking was expensive but they are both worth it and I will definitely be returning to see both of them. read more

Best value ever for quality haircut. I paid too much money for mediocre cuts or ones that "needed to grow out a little" for years. When I found J. Over the years Roland has given me some of the most beautiful styles and made me feel amazing through two pregnancies and two milestone Birthdays (30 and 40!). I always leave the salon feeling a million dollars and I'm often asked which salon I use. Roland cuts with intensity and precision and I trust him implicitly. He's also a great guy. If I could give zero stars I would. I had the worst experience at this salon. I went it to get my hair dyed and took a photo of the color I wanted. After 3 tries and 2 days (I had to come back a second day because after 3 hours of bleaching my hair, re-dying, bleaching again, etc.), the colorist was not able to get it even close to the color I asked for. In the end, my hair was bright green. On the first day, before my services were complete, my credit card was charged. I called the salon to get a refund since they not only weren't able to dye my hair the color I asked for, they bleached it multiple times and left it green. The salon outright refused to do give me my money back and said that since they still spent their "time" on me, and even though they were unable to perform the services I asked for, they would not give me a refund of any sort. I have been to this salon multiple times before and have never had such terrible service. Even the owner did not care that they will be losing a repeat customer for life. If you are going there, be warned that while you have no issues, it's all fine, but as soon as there is any kind of problem, no one will help you. read more

This review is for the colorist Emily. The girl must have been a magician in her past life because what she did with my hair was nothing short of a miracle. I'm a natural brunette, previously ombred, and was recently redheaded and wanted to go blonde. That's right, blonde. This had such a large chance of being a disaster, but Emily took her time and figured out exactly what needed to happen, and then did it meticulously. After hours of foiling and highlighting, I emerged a blonde. People love my hair. I love my hair. Someone told me my hair was so "Jennifer Aniston-y" (in the good post-Friends way). I can't wait to go back and go blonder. And knowing Emily's skill, I'm confident I will somehow leave with Gisele Bundchen hair. Bottom line, if you are looking to get your hair colored/highlighted, get to Emily, she'll make your hair dreams come true. read more

Given the cost, it's not for everyone, or every haircut. Unless you are senior enough in your career to have your own office in a building within a 1/2 mile radius of this place. I'm not, but I was persuaded to come here after receiving a free consultation from Todd at a promotional event. The guy absolutely knows his stuff, namely the best kind of cut for each guy he meets, including me. If you don't quite know what you want other than that you need a hairstyle that suits you, it is absolutely worth spending the money at least once to have an expert like this work with you. Todd (and the hair washing / head massaging staff) delivered brilliantly and was also able to give me a rather amazing product tip: if you hate hair gel and heavy creams, just use conditioner instead. Leave-in conditioner? It doesn't matter if it's "leave-in" or regular. (Apparently "leave in" conditioner is often just a marketing name.) Just thoroughly massage in to wet hair about half as much conditioner as you'd use in the shower, and you're good to go. Or apply a full amount in the shower, but then only wash out about half. If applying to dry hair as "product" before going out, start at the back of your hair then massage forward to avoid a "blob" getting stuck in front. Amazing. Thanks Todd! read more

Jairo is an absolute hair genius. I refer all of my friends to him and even take my mom to see him when she visits. I met Jairo at an event and after talking to him about my latest cut (which was not good) and decided to visit him for a cut and style. Ladies, I'll follow this stylist anywhere. Jairo is incredible in the way that he approaches your hair. He talks to you to understand your hair type and how you like to style it and then he cuts it and takes the time to teach you exactly how to style it based on the new cut. If you're looking for a change, he has ideas for how to vary your style or change it completely and then he executes the new cut flawlessly. He can be fun to talk to while you get your hair done, or he can just do your hair and leave you to relax while he works. Elkin and Sheila are the best! I've been seeing Elkin for the past few months for hair color and could not be happier with the results. After being told that my hair was just "naturally brassy" and unresponsive to color, I wasn't sure if I would always be struggling to keep my hair from turning extra warm. But Elkin was finally able to give me the hair color I'd been wanting for years! He's not only knowledgable, but incredibly receptive, understanding, and respectful of his clients' opinions. I've received tons of compliments from friends and family and always leave the salon feeling confident and happy with the results. I also just received my first haircut from Sheila and am in love! I haven't had a cut I've been this happy with in a long time. Sheila understood exactly how my hair grows and how to cut it to flatter my face shape. She also does amazing styling for weddings - I actually first met her when she styled my hair in a braid for my friend's wedding and the whole bridal party loved her work! Just had my first (and definitely not my last) appointment at J. Roland Salon. I saw Kat for a partial highlight and could not be happier. After just a few minute consultation, Kat had a thorough understanding of what I was looking for and knew exactly how to get it done. She worked quickly (getting the highlights in, out, washed and dried in under an hour and a half) although I could've stayed and chatted for several hours as she is as interesting as she is kind and funny. Not only did she put in some fantastic looking highlights but also fixed a color mistake made by a previous stylist. The staff at J. Great Salon. My colorist TyRess rocks and Rosa is wonderful at cutting hair. I have very curly hair so I have had my share of lock nighmares. The only reason I am giving J Roland Salon four instead of five stars is that their web site, while visually inviting, is not very functional. There is no e-mail to send appointment requests or other customer care requests to and I called today 11/26/13 to change an appointment and only got voice mail advising the salon would be closed 11/28/13 and reopening 12/3/13 - seriously? In this day and age, I expect a "premier" salon to have their reception/ voice mail act together. read more

Got my color done here over a year ago (ombré) and the technique was so good that my hair has grown out beautifully and still maintains a really amazing ombré look. I do have to get it toned regularly to keep it from going orange, but I'm super impressed by how great my color still looks to this day. It really has to do with the care and attention that the colorist put into this. It was expensive but given I haven't needed to redo it, it's made it worth it. read more
