Price $90 for Johnathan regular haircut Pro tip: When you get there you have to look for the sign bc you walk through the walkway between buildings to get to it in the back, a little hard to see but if you find the sign it's easy to get to. Experience day of: I had a relaxing chat about what I wanted, he was so patient with deciding on the vision. After, I had a heavenly wash with mini head neck massage. Then he went in cutting off many inches and added hella layers. Then he did a wonderful blow out with round brush, a little light styling mousse, and hair dryer to get the look in the after pics. Throughout, we had a great conversation - Jonathan is all around personable, friendly, and talented. Two weeks later thoughts: At first I was a little hesitant on how much I'd have to style it but then I air dried my hair a couple days after and it dried perfectly enhancing the waves I have underneath (my hair is straight on top and wavy underneath). I am not one to write reviews often but this place deserves it. I moved here around New Years and have been hunting for a new salon. I tried another place in North Beach and it was an OK job at a ridiculously high price. I got recommended to Head & Soul by a friend and WOW! Thank god i did! Camilla did an absolutely wonderful job and I am in love with my new hair! I got a partial highlight with an overall base bump to go a bit lighter for the summer. Camilla had a fun idea to lighten my eyebrows too and it looks so cohesive. Also note, the salon is hidden down a little alley way which opens to this adorable courtyard covered in plants. The studio itself has a really cool, welcoming energy to it as well. Definitely recommend coming here and booking with Camilla! read more

I recently had a haircut here with Marina and she was great! She took the time to listen to what I wanted and how I styled my hair and then gave her recommendations before we started the cut. She is super friendly, professional and understands the client. She cleaned up my bad haircut and focused on giving me a great style that looks great now and in line with me growing out my hair for the wedding. I told her that all I do is blow dry with a round brush and that is exactly what she did to make sure my hair looked great. If you're thinking of chopping off your hair for the first time either for fun, break up, change, or charity (I've always had really long hair so you can imagine the panic I was going through), then Angie is your go-to hairstylist. I went on a spontaneous haircut spree with my bestie last Saturday, and got Angie by pure luck! She's awesome and it's not just because she has my nickname, she also has big time talent. I definitely don't want everyone knowing about her because SHE'S MINE lol, but can't help it- she's freaking good. ZOMG Joseph Abrigo is the greatest! He has been cutting my hair for 6 years now and I've ALWAYS left feeling great about my hair. He is uber-friendly and makes me feel relaxed and comfortable. I have had my hair colored, cut and straightened and he does an amazing job!! One of the best things I have done for myself is to schedule Joseph for every 4 weeks ... that way if he or I go on vacation I can make sure to get my cut at the best time.. for me! :P Practical tip would be to call ahead (he's popular) and to bring meter change ;) and pump that meter up 'cause he'll pamper you if you let him and who wants to be in a rush!? :) Oh and ask for a latte or espresso beverage when you're there.. yum! Had a positive experience here! This review is for the salon space and London specifically who did my balayage and cut. Coming in with my mass of overgrown layers and previously failed balayage, London knew exactly how to treat my hair. Thanks to her, now I have soft layers with a beautiful ashy caramel balayage (that looks sunkissed) which I am extremely pleased with. I've gotten compliments and love from everyone! The salon itself is situated off the street in a backyard building - you walk through an allyway to reach it. What a paradise! Luscious plants outside and hardwood surfaces inside. THEY'RE JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU: I have to agree with Jessica P here. I really wanted to try Head & Soul Salon -- I've been feeling mediocre about my usual salon and thought Head & Soul would be a good change since it's in my neighborhood and has such amazing Yelp reviews. They might give great style, but they seem to be lacking in customer service. First I tried to book online, but the online system seems to only show one stylist's availability and she seems to be booked at least a month out. OK, I understand good stylists are hard to come by, so I wanted to call to see who else might be available. I called three times to make an appointment, leaving a message (no one ever seems to answer) on their confusing message system (tells you they are open 7 days a week but that they "don't answer phones on Sunday or Monday")asking for a cut and blow dry, preferably sometime on the weekend. No call back. Last night was my final try, I stopped by after work around 6PM. Someone was working on a client, and saw me trying to open the locked door, and didn't come over to ask me what I wanted. I guess they were closed, but they have made themselves very clear. I guess good for them, they seem not to need any more clients. I've gotten much warmer service at far higher end salons. Let me know when this salon hires a receptionist and I'll consider trying again if I'm feeling particularly masochistic. read more

I came to Marina for the first time with my baby-fine hair which has always been both a blessing and a curse. It's easy to maintain (just wash and go), air-drying takes less than an hour, and it's super-soft. The only thing that bothers me about it is that I don't have the body or volume that goes along with having thick hair and therefore am somewhat limited with the styles I can achieve. Knowing this, I brought in pictures of long flowing layers from every angle, hoping that Marina would at the very least, understand the look I was trying for. I asked her it it were possible. She assured me that it was no problem as she ran a comb through my wet hair... and chopped the whole thing off right where it tangled. From that moment on, the only thought running through my mind was how long it would take my hair to grow out. She proceeded to snip the hair around my face adding feathered layers. I sat silent, waiting. Marina must have sensed my discomfort and began reassuring me that my hair would now look very "healthy". Oh good. She offered to put curls in it to show me how nice it really could look, which I appreciated. It really did look cute and I always enjoy loose curls, but to have to curl it every day... It took away from a major advantage to having fine hair. Not to mention having to use hair spray to hold the curls... that would just make my hair less soft and more crunchy and sticky. Great. The next day, I styled it with curls. Cute, very cute. On the third day, I did the whole wash and go, my usual routine. I was leaving the gym and did not have the time or patience for styling. Surprisingly, my hair looked good straight. The layers framed my face well and they naturally bent inward as if I had blow-styled them that way. Wow. Marina knew better than I did. I've been told my hair looks really healthy. It's still easy to maintain and it's as soft as ever. read more

I have been seeing Joseph since 1998, when I was dating a HUGE jerk who was probably too old for me, but who introduced me to Joseph. The jerk is long gone, but my love affair with Joseph lives on. And thank god for that. How my head and my healthy, healthy layers adore that man! I met Joseph when he was still in the lower Haight and I was still a confused young soul without a clue that my hair had so much potential. He opened my young, naive eyes and he can do the same for you. These days, Joseph has moved up in the world and is cutting, coloring, and generally rocking in the Marina. How disappointing. Bought the Groupon to try a new salon. Tried 3 times to make an appointment. They never answered the phone or returned my calls. Now I see this on their site: "I AM NOT ACCEPTING GROUPON VOUCHERS.PLEASE CONTACT GROUPON FOR A REFUND. THANK YOU" Thanks, Head & Soul, for making it MY responsibility to now deal with Groupon for a refund of the $100 I paid. If you can't honor your Groupons, the least you could do is have the courtesy to make Groupon refund the purchases without making individual customers deal with the hassle. Small boutique salons like this should know better than to over-commit to a Groupon. Definitely won't be trying this one in the future. read more

Please notice how all of the bad reviews for Head & Soul are from disgruntled Groupon patrons. People like myself who have actually gone to Head and Soul and gotten treatments have nothing but wonderful things to say. I initially came in with the Groupon for a Brazilian Blowout as well, and like other people, was frustrated at the wait time and the fact that they are not always there to answer the phone. Please, just be patient. My experience once I got into the salon was so positive that I am now a regular customer. Joseph is amazing and I highly recommend booking an appointment with him if you are looking to get a Brazilian Blowout. He is FAST (1 1/2 hours for a Brazilian Blowout vs. the 3 hours it takes at other places), friendly, and does an excellent job! I have VERY curly hair and Joseph makes sure to put extra solution on the parts of my hair that need it the most so that I get the best results possible. I've had Brazilian Blowouts done elsewhere and have been dissatisfied because there have been weird coarse/kinky sections of hair that I have noticed after washing. Not the case here. The best part about Head and Soul's Brazilian Blowouts, though, is that they use the formula that you can wash out after 24 hours. Gone are my 72 hours of hiding from other people because I look like a grease ball! The last time I went, I also had Joseph refresh my highlights and cut my hair afterwards. He did a great job and gave me his honest opinion regarding what would look best on me. This is a very cozy, yet professional salon. They have several stylists up front and a couple in the back. I go to Marina since my wife had introduced us and she consistently gives me the best cut I have ever had. I highly recommend her. The only thing is parking in this area can be a bit rough in some cases, expect to spend at least 10 mins looking for a spot, if you don't want to pay. I swear I left a review for this place before, Yelp must be playing its game of hiding positive reviews on me. Wow...thought I'd written one already. Seana is the only person I've allowed to touch my hair for the past seven years. I literally came crying to her after a $300+ color/haircut @ one of SF's 'top' salons left me with highlights that looked like Pepe Le Pew. (I should have been clued in by the guy's banging on about his house in Palm Springs...he was much more interested in talking with his decorator than he was in focusing on my hair.) Not only did Seana fix my hair, she's also provided me with a sounding board and solid advice for my small business. What a bonus!! She was wired into a gigantic network before FB, LinkedIn, etc. even existed and I value the time I spend with her every couple of months. Bottom line: if you want a low-key, attitude-free atmosphere and optimal results, get to Head and Soul. Plus, she was so sweet to me as the chipper and nervously supportive g-friend who was watching said g-friend get almost 18 inches of hair (4 ponytails worth) taken off her head to give to Locks of Love. My first review was based on the Groupon and scheduling experience (e.g., canceled my appt, difficult to reach via phone/email, comments on Groupon's page that the salon wasn't honoring them anymore without refund). I had been really excited to get my hair cut at H&S and my review reflected my disappointment. I never heard back from the salon or groupon, so a month later, I tried calling again and I got an appointment!! I was nervous today that they would know me as the negative reviewer. (This was my first negative yelp review ever - I recognize that in Yelpville a negative review is much much more powerful than a positive review). Angie cut and styled my hair and was very quiet during the appt. I normally LOVE this - I like to just sit in the chair and relax. But I was so nervous - thinking her silence meant she was on to me - that I babbled like an idiot, a tiny bit fearful she'd purposely give me a bad cut (hell, she'd already had the bad review). But the haircut she gave me is fabulous - healthy, full of body, a real style. I love it; I really do. When we were checking out she asked me if I used Yelp. My heart started racing, I knew I was caught; I stammered that I had reviewed a handful of things in the past. She went to the back to get me change and she was gone for what felt like eternity. When she returned she told me that there was a negative review on yelp with my same name (middle name too!) by someone who, like me, had moved from San Diego. Caught! I confessed I had left a negative review due to the scheduling difficulties (and believing I'd been scammed out of $35). I also told her I appreciated her directness (I really do) and she said she didn't know it was me (the 1 star yelper) until after the appointment when I gave her my groupon with my full name. She also said that I would have received the same fabulous hair cut even if she had known. (She was so professional about this - I honestly do believe her). It sounds like they made a bad decision in signing up for Groupon. I feel bad for them that this has been a stressful and costly experience, and I also feel bad for the people who purchased the groupons that aren't able to redeem them and/or were incorrectly told they weren't going to honor groupons. I don't think that I was necessarily wrong to be upset when my appt was canceled and I couldn't get a hold of anyone to reschedule - and thus gave the one-star review. However, I eventually got an appt, received a wonderful haircut, and Angie was incredibly professional. I'm impressed that she confronted me about the negative yelp review - and she did it in a very professional and polite manner. And so if anyone has read to the end of this rambling review, I will return to H&S. One of the most difficult things about moving is finding someone new to cut your hair. Angie gave me an amazing haircut and thus my search is over. read more

I hadn't had a haircut in a while, so I was very excited to change up my look a bit. I have fine, curly hair, and I asked for face framing layers and long layers in back. During the cut, the stylist (Dexter, I think) didn't speak to me at all, which was kind of comfortable considering the stylist and customer next to us were chatting away like long lost brothers. The cut appeared to be fine, nothing exciting but not terrible, but the style was pretty hideous. He blow dried my hair without a diffuser, making my hair frizzy and poofy, and then rubbed some product in it. I walked out of the salon and was so unhappy with it that I immediately put it in a ponytail. I had a groupon, but still paid around $50 including a tip, and it really didn't feel like it was worth it. I'd never pay full price for that kind of cut. read more

Joseph is the best stylist out there & I've noticed that everyone looks great when they leave this salon - no matter which stylist they've seen. I've been going to joseph for a few years & will continue to as long as possible. (I've cheated on him w/ a place that had a groupon and was recommended by a friend. eeek!) Joseph takes the time to properly cut my hair so the weird wavy things it will do will fall right & not only look good when he's done, but it grows out looking great. He's also fun to chat with! (Also works just fine w/ quiet people like my spouse.) Yes, the cut can take a while. (It's not an assembly line!) And yes, sometimes you have to wait 5-10 mins or so, but he's been much better about a timely start (than he was a few years ago), and it's worth taking the time for a quality hair cut/style! read more

I got blunt bangs last month and love them, but they grow fast. Luckily since i don't have visible eyebrows anymore, I can channel those maintenace funds into bang trims. I am flying to Chicago tomorrow and realized that my bangs had gotten so long that I could no longer see beyond a sheet of brown. Not wanting to miss out on sight seeing I wandered around my neighborhood until I came across a salon. Stepped into Head and Soul and asked if someone could quickly do my bangs. Dexter was free, sat me down and gave a quick but meticulous trim. I can see again! I was so grateful that they could squeeze me in as a walk in, but when I went to pay he said "free of charge!" even though I am not a regular client. It is rare to come across such a deed in this city, and made my afternoon. Kudos to Head & Soul for having some heart (couldn't help myself). read more

I adore Rosemary!! About 3 months ago, my sweet angel Whit took me here to get my hair chopped off right before a big trip. Whit has been seeing Lauren for a long time, and I was originally supposed to get my hair cut by Lauren as well. Unfortunately, Lauren had a medical issue and was forced to cancel, but she kindly asked if Rosemary would cut my hair in order to keep my appointment. Rosemary and Lauren were both trained at the same salon, and now both work at Head and Soul, so Lauren was very confident in recommending her. I had a really great time chatting it up with Rosemary! She's really hilarious and easy going. Besides that, I LOVED what she did with my hair! I chopped it off so it was much shorter than it had been, and pretty much told her to do whatever she wanted, with a few guidelines. She did a great job, and I got so many compliments on it. The cut also grew out really nicely, which is an issue that I have encountered in the past; a cut that you like originally, but doesn't have a good structure so it doesn't grow out well. So I just came from my second appointment with Rosemary, and once again I got a fantastic cut! Rosemary is my go-to girl! read more

First hair salon to finally earn my repeat business! Rosemarie does amazing things with my floppy, frizzy, curly, baby fine hair. It always comes out looking ultra sleek even when she styles it curly for me! I never leave with the dreaded "Mall hair" that most places force onto my head and she doesn't push the product sales on you. Sometimes a fluffy poof of dog will pop in to say hello, too-- SO CUTE! For an amazing hair cut, go see Angie Tom. She has been cutting my hair for 5 years. She's been cutting both my mom's and my aunt's hair for more than 10. We all love her and have never gotten a bad hair cut. She's very good about giving you what you want and it never ends up too short, too long, or too funky. She always styles your hair really nice at the end too. Its a little pricey but definitely worth it if you're like me and only get your hair cut 2-3 times a year and need something that will last a couple monthd and still look good. Lots of little perks too that enhance the experience, good magazines and they make great capuccinos! Overall, nice decor too! read more

Joseph Abrigo is awesome - he seems to just get what it is you're looking for in a hair style, and I've always been pleased with the results. He's very thorough, and reasonably priced (my last visit was 2 hours, and cost $50). He's only used scissors and razors when I've gone there, never the electric cutters. Still not convinced? How about being asked whether you want a coffee, late, or glass of wine when you sit down? Now that's service! One point of note: be sure to allow enough time to hunt down a parking space that has no meter, usually available to the streets north of Union, especially on hills. read more

London has a gift for giving anyone an easy to manage, sharp-looking cut. I have very curly hair and kept it at a dull 3/8 of an inch clip (not a fade, just equal all around) for years until I met London and she convinced me to grow it out a bit. She's also great company, stylists have a reputation for talking a client's ear off but London not only has interesting things to say, she's also great at listening or just letting you relax and listen to the music while she takes care of your hair. read more

I used to have a stylist in East Bay but since I moved to SF over a year ago I've been looking for a great hair stylist. Since I couldn't find a hair stylist I could trust, I was cutting my own hair for awhile (I thought it looked good at the time...but boy, was I wrong). My best friend found Lauren for me after my disaster at another salon (see http://www.yelp.com/biz/carla-and-company-hair-studio-san-francisco). I showed Lauren a photo of what I wanted my hair to look like, and she make it look exactly like the photo. She wove a string through my hair for extra hold (which was important because my wedding was outdoors and it was very windy). She has her own area at the back of the salon which connects to a back garden. So, if you have a group, they can hang out in the backyard and wait their turn. Her friend, Vanessa, does amazing make-up. She had me look through some magazines and point out to her what I liked and didn't like. From that, she was able to figure out what I was looking for. Both Lauren and Vanessa were so great, we had other family members go to them. In total, we had 10 different women go for hair and make-up on my wedding day and they ALL turned out beautifully. read more

Rosemarie Rocks! Rosemarie has been cutting my hair for about four years and she's great. She expertly cuts my bangs so that I can wear them straight for a month then sweep them to the side for a month or so -- then I go see her again. She'll also trim my bangs in between appointments -- but I'm usually too lazy. Rosemarie's also great at covering pesky little greys while still keeping the color and texture of my hair looking natural -- or giving me lowlights when I'm in the mood for darker hair. Another plus is that Rosemarie doesn't make me feel like I need to buy product all of the time. She tells me what she's using as she uses it (all wonderful-smelling B&B products) and recommends shampoos, etc,, but I don't feel pressured or judged. Highly recommended! read more

The owner, Seana is awesome. I've only been here for the Brazilian blowout (yes, the Groupon) but I'll be back to her for a haircut as soon as I'm back in San Francisco. They recently moved to Polk street, and their new spot is not visible from the street, so it may be hard to find (at least when I went, there were still no signs up) but it's an adorable salon tucked in the back. This was the fastest Brazilian blowout treatment ever. I was out of there in an hour! Plus, it's the type where you can wash your hair right away (as opposed to waiting three greasy, flat-hair days). Even without the Groupon, it's also on the affordable side for a Brazilian blowout. As some people have mentioned, this salon is hard to get a hold of sometimes. But leave a message and be patient.
