J. Roo's Restaurant is a restaurant and bar that opened in North Haven, Connecticut in 2002. It was founded by husband and wife Sal and Virginia "Ginny" Mazzaro. For close to 25 years, the Mazzaro family operated Vic's Pizza on Quinnipiac Avenue. Eventually, they had an idea to open something bigger and better with a more extensive menu. The restaurant was named for their son Jason, who goes by the nickname "J. Roo". Originally, the restaurant was billed as "J. Roo's, home of Vic's Pizza". The extensive menu consists of Italian specialties, seafood dishes, steakhouse entrees, New Haven-style pizza, burgers & hotdogs, sandwiches & wraps, salads, soups, wings, various bar bites, craft beer, wine, and specialty cocktails. In 2015, J. Roo's temporarily closed for a major renovation. The current, larger restaurant space opened the following year. My family and I recently had dinner at J. Roo's. My wife and I have enjoyed their food a few times in the past, but this was the first visit for our two sons. We were all seated at a booth in the main dining area. J. Roo's makes great wings and other various types of bar appetizers, but we were all in the mood for some New Haven-style pizza. We decided to order two medium pizzas: the "Pesto" (white pie, fresh mozz, grilled chicken & garlic pesto sauce) and the "Meatball Ala Vodka" (vodka sauce, meatballs, fresh mozz); the latter was a special. This place used to be very good. The food quality has gone down hill. The service was ok and the restaurant was seemingly clean but everything we ordered we did not enjoy. As of late there is no consistency in food quality, serving size or recipe. I would not return or recommend until consistency is addressed. read more

The place is like a sports bar, pub type of vibe.The waitress was really nice and honest about the menu. But the food was mediocre at best. Got this from a recommendation, however, it didn't live up to my expectations. The egg rolls weren't filled with cheese like I expected from the title and description on the menu. The curly fries weren't filled with the best thing to me. Fries are very hard to mess up. I didn't enjoy the flavor of the sauce the came with the egg rolls, it tasted like ranch mixed with some sort of cheese spread. My colleague had the pizza slice and it was dried out. the cheese appeared to be reheated multiple times and greasy. I met a couple of friends at this restaurant for dinner, and while we were eating, someone hit my car in the parking lot and left without leaving any information. When I got back to my vehicle, it displayed a notification that it had been involved in a collision at approximately 6:15 p.m. and instructed me to check the surrounding area. I found that the front end of my car had been damaged. I immediately went back into the restaurant and asked to speak with the manager. I requested that she review the parking lot security cameras. She initially told me she couldn't access them but said her son, the owner, would call me the following morning. After I continued asking about the footage, she reluctantly admitted that she didn't think the camera system was even working, meaning nothing may have been recorded. The next morning, I never received the promised call, so I called the restaurant myself. Ashley answered and said the owner had just arrived. After putting me on hold for several minutes, she came back, took my name and phone number, and assured me he would call me shortly. I asked if I could simply wait on the line, but she insisted he would call. That call never came. Around 4:00 p.m., I called again and spoke with another employee. After explaining the situation and asking to speak directly with the owner, I was placed on hold. When he returned, he told me the owner said to tell me the cameras weren't working and that he had nothing more to say. I asked to confirm that the owner was refusing to speak with me, and the employee said yes. To be clear, I was not asking the restaurant to pay for the damage to my vehicle. I simply hoped they would review any available camera footage or ask their staff if anyone had seen or heard anything. My car was parked very close to the outdoor dining area, so I thought there was at least a chance someone might have witnessed the incident. Instead, I was met with broken promises, poor communication, and complete indifference. Accidents happen, and I understand the restaurant isn't responsible for someone else's actions. What is unacceptable is the complete lack of customer service and the owner's unwillingness to have a simple conversation. Based on this experience, I will never return. If you choose to dine here, be aware that you're parking at your own risk--and don't expect any help if something happens. read more

J Roos has pretty good pizza and sandwiches But I was there a few weeks ago for a banquet and it was disappointing The servers did their very best and they worked very hard I'll start it out by saying that the pasta, bread, and salad were good However, when it came to my meal, I just want say that I've never had such a bad chicken francese. Dry, and none of the lemony sauce that the chicken francese is supposed to have Potatoes were cold, and other people said their vegetables were cold. I don't usually complain about my food when I go out to eat, but this was just so subpar Wish I had taken a picture of it so I could post it I do want to say that the people that ordered the prime rib said it was good and indeed it did look good Do better J Roos ! So we used to frequent Jroo's more often or at the very least do delivery takeout which was always decent with our favs being eggplant parm sub or buffalo chicken nachos delivered. We stopped in because we had a gift card and were sorely disappointed, our waitress Kate might have been having a bad day as she was not it. Our drinks were good my husband loves being able to order Foxon park diet white birch. We split an app of fried calamari and it was way overdone a dark brown and so much so that some of the crispy coating had fried off leaving rubbery rings. I ordered the potato skins with broccoli and when they came they also had bacon and I said I ordered the broccoli ones and she said I assumed you want both and was incredulous that I would send them back. We had to ask another server for silverware and yet another server for ketchup as after that she didn't return to check on us. Hard pass going forward. read more

I've been to this restaurant a few times but this last visit was on another level. We were a large group celebrating the holiday but they only had one server (who was great) but due to the busiest of the restaurant the food (if you received it) was nothing to write home about. I never received my meal and asked for french fries so I had something to eat. Others did not receive their food until after some had already finished eating. They were not equipped to handle large crowds. We've been there 3 yrs for celebrating but it will be our last. The drink pictured was amazing! read more

So finally, we decided to finally give this place a try because we drive by it all the time and always say, "we have to eat there one day". Well, that they came and went. We were seated I. The back room and the lighting was dim. The acoustics was poor because every sound was amplified, and it turned out that there was a group of people there making a ton of noise. The server was young and had that "whatever" attitude. No super attentive or helpful. We started off with nachos and the portion was big and it was slathered with an unusual amount of ground beef. I never thought I would complain about how much meat is on my nachos but it actually ruined the app. The flavor was good and it was more than enough for 5 people. The amount of ground beef was so offputting. We actually had leftover which is a shocker for nachos. The meals were incredibly disappointing. Two people ordered the prime rib dinner and when it came, it was an enormous portion. The optics looked very good however it was tough and inedible. You had to cut it into tiny pieces to eat it. My table mates were disappointed to say the least. Another friend had the personal pizza and the middle portion was mushy. The edges by the crust were cooked well but it had the consistency of a frozen supermarket pizza. As for me, I ordered the chicken Florentine and it was mediocre at best. It lacked flavor and I had to do it with grated cheese, just to give it some taste. The linguine accompaniment was overcooked, with a mushy texture. The meals are a little pricey for the quality of the food. I never thought I would say this, but I think the Olive Garden would've been a better choice. Seated right away, we got a good look at their menu, ordered the Nashville cheese curds for an app and then for mains we got the chicken florentine over penne and a veggie burger. Our waitress, Vanessa T. was fantastic, she was friendly and always made sure we had everything we needed. My husband ordered a cheese pizza and I ordered the shrimp scampi pizza. My husband and I agreed that the pizza was okay, but we've had better in other spots around New Haven County. We've been to J Roo's before and we've had other food items that we enjoyed more. Have to say this was the best BLT ever!! The wheat bread was perfectly toasted, bacon was nice & crispy- just YUM!! I got it with sweet potato fries which were also perfectly crispy. I also got a spicy margarita which was also very good. Restaurant is located right off the highway. The place is huge & very popular. It was Friday night and I had to fight for a parking spot. The food was great, especially loved the wings and the J Roos chips. I declared those my new go-to faves. The service was also great! It was early in the week during the mid afternoon so it wasn't too crowded. Highly recommended this place. Couldn't understand why there were do many negative reviews. Fast forward a month or so. Go back again, this time later in the week and it had to be around Happy Hour time... it wasn't packed, but definitely more crowded. This time I didn't order as much food, and I'm glad I didn't. The food took longer to come out and at the same time it felt rushed. Missing was the quality and care from my previous visit. The server seemed to have an attitude, like we were bothering her by even being there. I also tried one new item and I think it was overpriced, not worth the money. Drinks were well-made, but This time I was highly disappointed with the service and the food. Now I see why there are so many negative opinions and reviews of this place. It made me not want to go back. So I'm giving right down the middle 3 stars because with a 5 star experience and a 1 star experience, I'm not really sure which was the true J Roos. There are a lot of very good pizza places in the area and we decided to try J Roos since years ago it was our go to place. When they reopened some time ago we tried it again and were very disappointed in the pizza. We tried it again this week and the pizza was terrible. Mushy crust and sauce had no flavor. Very disappointed with this place, first of all the waiting time to be seated per employee was "about 15-20 minutes " it was a decent time to wait, however we waited for 45 minutes in a small area crowded, while several tables were unoccupied. Finally when we got to our table, The staff told us that "the kitchen is backed up " and the waiting time for the food will be no less than 30 minutes. The drinks were fairly, first time trying white sangria.... But with Orange juice? Was in the area with my bestie and she loves this place so we decided to have lunch here. It was my first time here. Looks like a cool spot to come for dinner and have some drinks. A light crisp on the outside and the filling was delicious, and they were not skimpy with the filling! I really enjoyed the sauce. It had great flavor. For the entree, we ordered the Prime Rib Au Jus - shaved prime rib topped with Swiss cheese and sautéed onions served with a side of Au Jus. We ordered the platter, which comes with cole slaw and a pickle, and we choose steak fries. I really enjoyed this sandwich!! There is so much flavor, and I like how they put the Au Jus on the side for dipping. It had such great flavor!! The steak fries were yummy, too! I just ordered takeout lunch from JRoo's. The frontline staff on the phone is clueless. I called it in at 10:32 a.m. for 11:30 pickup. Plenty of time for them to get it right. I spoke to Olivia. I asked that my blue cheese (cold) for my wings be given to me when I arrive. Because they always put it in the bag with the hot food. The food sits under that heater and when you get it home the blue cheese is soupy. I also ordered a chili as well and asked for the cheese on the side and same thing happened. Cheese was one big melted blob when I got it home. Now I'm not sure if it's the front line folks or the kitchen staff. All cheese melts on top of HOT food. I specifically asked for this not to happen when I called my order in and without fail they did just the opposite. Take out today is too expensive ($25.23) for things not to be right. Keep in mind I called the order in at 10:32 a.m. so no excuses. Plenty of time to get the order correct. I'm standing there and I asked for a slice to go lightly heated and plated. What did the young guy do? Put it in styrofoam container instead of on paper plate. I asked for cheese and pepper and he took so long bringing the cheese and never showed up with the pepper flakes. I walked out. SMH Clearly the frontline staff needs more training. This is why I could not give JRoo's a 5 star review for takeout service today. This is not my first time going to JRoo's for food. Today was just terrible. I'm not sure if I will ever order takeout from them again. Unless I have time to sit down I will probably not do takeout again. My husband has been here a few times and has always had a good meal. He took our son and me for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Big parking lot. Nice inside. They have a pretty big menu so I'm sure there is something for everybody. I had the prime rib sandwich which came with choice of side. The sandwich was pretty big and the portion of sweet potato fries was huge! Everything was very tasty even the pickle and little cole slaw.
