Best Soufflé Pancakes ever! Now that I've actually been to Japan I can honestly say I crave these pancakes more than the ones I had overseas! These pancakes are more fluffier and eggier (I think that's a legit word, LOL), and super rich! If you don't like eggs, don't visit because there is a lot of eggy flavor. I've tried the two dominant flavors, Matcha and Strawberry, and I can't tell which one I like better. The light cream topping is better than any butter or maple syrup I've ever had. There is usually one more flavor that they change from time to time as well which I've heard is great. Going on the weekday avoids the wait. The space is small, and the famous Kiseki pancakes take their time, about twenty to thirty minutes, as if they are being persuaded into existence rather than cooked. These Kiseki pancakes are not pancakes in the American sense. They are soufflé style creations, tall and trembling, as if gravity is only a suggestion. They arrive airy and delicate, with a gentle jiggle that suggests optimism. We ordered accordingly. I had the lemon ricotta, which tasted like sunlight had been filtered through dairy. My oldest chose matcha, green, purple and quietly sophisticated and complex. My youngest went with the original maple, a classic executed so well it made the classics feel new again. All were excellent, the sort of food that makes conversation pause because mouths are busy being grateful. My father in law ordered what I personally considered a cautious breakfast. Regular pancakes with eggs and bacon. A meal that could have been assembled in any roadside diner between here and forever. Yet even this was handled with care. The eggs were perfect, the bacon honest, the pancakes dignified. No irony, no shortcuts. Yes, the prices are a little steep. But this is not a place for routine nourishment. This is a place for occasions, for birthdays, for reminding yourself that breakfast can aspire to something like art. I know the first one is always the more important one, but I dare you not to jiggle your strawberry pancakes for an Instagram story. We first had this style of pancakes several years ago when we were in London during Covid, and I have thought about them ever since. I'd never had anything so light and airy and delicious. Whenever we traveled to other big cities here in the US, I've always looked to see if there was anything similar and I finally found them! I had the lemon ricotta kiseki pancakes, my husband had the chocolate banana kiseki pancakes, and my dad had the regular 2 pancakes with eggs. Our only complaint was that the meals were not brought out together. My dad's meal was brought out a half hour before either of ours, so we sat and watched him eat, which he said it was really good. So he was completely done eating when ours came out. We knew that ours would take longer, but we thought dad's food would be served at least around the same time as ours, not just right away. I've been here multiple times. On weekdays and weekends. It's a great brunch option in the area and I've never had to wait for a table. Their egg Benedicts were solid but nothing special. I do like their kaarage in which the portion size is decent for the price. It was fried to perfection where it's crispy on the outside, hot, tender and juicy on the inside. Their burger was also very good where the meat was very juice. The fish burger, however, I felt was a miss. The fish lacked flavor and it was served with a few small pieces of fish so it got very messy with the burger falling apart and fishes falling everywhere. We ended need up needing to eat it with a fork and a knife. The highlight of their menu for me was their soufflé pancakes. I've tried their strawberry, matcha, and their seasonal Mont Blanc. The pancakes were light and airy, perfectly paired with their respective cream which was well balanced and not too sweet. I particularly like their Mont Blanc which included chestnut paste and actual chestnut pieces. Their pancakes are their must get items on their menu. The only downside I found was it seemed a little chaotic when I went on a weekend. They may have hired part timers on weekends in which they didn't seem to know what to do and where things were. We were able to come here for a Yelp Elite event and it was amazing! The restaurant is super clean with plenty of tables. We had a huge group of Elites and still had extra tables. This is as authentic of fluffy pancakes as you're going to get! The owners are Japanese and this is their first location in the U The pancakes were so light and decadent. It really brought us right back to the first time we tried these types of pancakes in Tokyo, Japan. The variety is great and I wouldn't be surprised if they had seasonal flavors down the road! I think I expected the pancake to be flavored but it's more of a fluffy cake pancake and the flavoring is in the cream that accompanies the pancake, which was good. I just don't think for $18 I'll be rushing back soon. My partner and I ordered a teriyaki burger and a Lemon Ricotta Keseki pancake dish and they somewhat met expectations? The fries that came along with the burger were completely unseasoned, but there was a good quantity of them. Their signature fluffy pancakes tasted pretty solid, especially their lemon ricotta cream. The service was decently fast but there were also very few people in the restaurant when we went in today, so in terms of rush hour, our experience was probably unrepresentative. I have seen reviews of horror stories of waiting more than 30-45 minutes to even be sat down. Love, love, love the pancakes here. Light, fluffy and so flavorful. I was ecstatic when I heard there was a Japanese pancake place in Central NJ. The restaurant is in the heart of downtown Princeton and gets quite busy on the weekends. Due to this, we opted to go on a week day for lunch a little after they opened. When we arrived, we were the 3rd ones there, so we were seated right away. We ordered the strawberry kiseki and matcha kiseki pancakes. The strawberry only came with 2 pancakes placed like a sandwich with strawberry jam in the middle, topped with a light strawberry cream and fresh strawberries. It was so decadent! The matcha came with 3 pancakes topped with a scoop of red bean paste, light matcha cream, light white cream, matcha syrup, and matcha crisps around the edge of the plate. This was my favorite out of the 2. Staff were very friendly and made our visit so much more enjoyable. Only thing is that the pancakes are quite expensive, costing $18 each. I couldn't really hear my boyfriend even though he was sitting right across from me. There's nothing there to stop all the sounds from bouncing off the walls basically. We went on a hot busy day and maybe it was the heat/the compactness of the space, potential lack of ac, or a variety of things, but I was sweating! I enjoyed tasting the chicken and waffles! I enjoyed my matcha pancakes overall, but I would say the matcha flavor is a little strong for the dish. I got my brother the strawberry pancakes and (after taxing a bite) I definitely enjoyed those more than my matcha ones. I will say there are some things that can be worked on like when it's busy have a texting system to let your group know that a table is available. We had to chance walking around vs losing our spot to whoever was around when a table was available. Another good option is while waiting allow people to put the order in because the kiseki pancakes took a super long time (mentioned on the little paper) so that while they are waiting it can be ready for when seating is available. We just sat there the entire time waiting and there's not much else to do so it gets a little boring/awk since the other food came out way before the pancakes came out. Even though you might be going here for the infamous Kiseki (Japanese fluffy) pancake, all other food items are equally high quality, including the regular American pancake. For drinks however, I'd recommend the iced lattes or tea for the most bang for your buck. The focus here is the food. This shop can be a little hard to find and even harder to find parking for on Tulane street. Walking in, you're immediately greeted by the enthusiastic staff and the cozy, wooden decor. The space is small, but on par with other restaurants in the area. The service, like the food, is elite and has extended many kind gestures such as remaking the iced matcha latte while waiting for our person to come or providing a free pancake sample. To avoid crowds, go on a weekday or make a reservation on Google! My favorite Kiseki pancakes are the fruit flavor as they are the most refreshing and have the most variety in flavor. I tend to get tired of something when that's the only flavor in a dish such as matcha, strawberry, chocolate, etc but these pancakes do a wonderful job of preventing this by ensuring the pancakes aren't too sweet or having a simple cream to break up flavor overpowering the dish. The fluffiness of the Kiseki is satisfying and light, allowing me to devour three. The lemon ricotta American pancakes were also delicious, but on the heavier side. For all the pancakes, depending on the flavor, there are crunch/fruits that complement the soft pillowy pancakes and sometimes drizzles that you can pour as little or as much as you'd like. If you want a savory dish, anything with fried chicken is delectable, with juicy chicken covered in crunchy, thick breading. I can't count how many times I've been to J S Foodies this year as it is the number one place I recommend in Princeton, and safely near the top of my Jersey spots. We ordered two fluffy pancake dishes, and coffees. I would pass on the coffee, they were just not good. If you're a fluffy pancake lover you must visit immediately!! My friend and I visited on a rainy Monday for about a 10-15 min wait. The store is small but cozy and we were seated as soon as a table opened up. We waited for 1hr 10 min for our Kiseki pancakes, and there are several signs in the store and the waiters warn beforehand about the wait, but it was worth it! Each pancake was jiggly, fluffy and had a nice eggy taste. I'd say it's pretty comparable to Flipper's in NYC.
