This review is for Melvin specifically. He is the best hair person I've ever had, hands down. I have thick/wavy/weird Asian hair and most people (especially if they are not Asian) cannot handle it. Melvin made my hair look so good. To boot he is a sweetheart. I'm so sad I no longer live on island because every time I'm getting my hair done by someone else, I'm missing Melvin. He also gave my husband the best haircuts of his life. I never had trouble parking right in front - maybe it was the times my appointments were - I went during non rush hours since I was coming from Ewa. You get a great head massage with your shampoo. I've gotten my hair cut here about 3-4 times and each time I leave feeling a little hurt inside. It never turns out how I asked for it to be. I usually go to Kristina but today I paid 170 for a deep conditioning and haircut with Joanne and was left feeling horrible about my appearance. Confidence low key tanked. The cut was good -- better than most places, and the scalp massage and styling was amazing, but it was not what I asked for! If you're a girl with long hair and you want to keep your length, you might have to say so over and over again until they get it, and you may still leave with hair over 2 inches shorter than what you asked for. Almost every time I've come here they take some sort of creative liberty with the length. Do better. I'm sad now. Devastated honestly. And I know it's just hair, but a good haircut makes a woman feel unstoppable and beautiful. After this last time, I won't be coming back. read more

Whoever Gary is, needs better customer service. I made it clear to special Gary that I had never had anything done to my hair and if he could explain how the whole process for an appointment (specifically hair coloring) worked (if it's all same day service or if you come in for a consultation before etc..) Gary, with a whole lot of smart ass responds with " uh YEAH that's how hair salons work, you come in, you tell us what you want & we do it. I'm not sure what you're asking" and proceeds to go in circles about this for a while. So I break it down for Gary a little slower, I say "well, like i said I've never been to a hair salon so I just wanted to know what all I should do to prepare." He responds with "Oh, well if you've never had anything done to your hair we typically have you come in for a consultation before ...." I say to Gary, that's literally what I'm looking for, literally what I've been asking" (could've just said that from the start). So I JUST said yes, a consultation appointment is what I'm looking for. This is the part where Gary SHOULD start saying okay, cool let's schedule you. Nope. He sits in silence and asks "Okay soo..... what did you want me to do for you?" ..... Gary are you okay? He asks me what day works for me. I ask what do you have available? He says well tell me what works for you, frustrated I'm like JESUS, Monday Gary, how's Monday? He replies "Oh we're all booked Monday" then sits in silence again, like OKAY GARY WHAT ABOUT TUESDAY? Fucking common sense!!!! Needless to say I definitely won't be going to that appointment. False advertisement, poor customer service and very rude manager. J Salon promises every customer a complimentary bang trim between haircuts, but beware and make sure you know the fine print before you are charged and treated with disrespect. This advertisement of a complimentary bang trim in my experience was not honored for the hair cuts I have purchased and was paired with a very negative interaction with a rude Manager. I have had two haircuts with J Salon with different hairdressers. I did not take advantage of the first bang trim I was owed, so after the second haircut I made my appointment for my "complimentary" bang trim. Please note it was NEVER explained to me that the bang trim had to be with the hairstylist most recently seen, so my appointment was made with the first stylist as I was unaware it mattered. What I thought was complimentary I ended up being charged for AFTER THE FACT, as my bang trim was with the first hairstylist I had seen (who I never got my complimentary bang trim from) instead of the second stylist. Might I add this explanation and charge was done in a very rude manner by the Manager himself. I recently called to schedule the "complimentary" bang trim that I am stilled owed per their advertising. The same Manager said that since I have had a bang trim in between haircuts I no longer can have a complimentary bang trim and I would be charged if I come in. This salon charges way too much money to have such poor customer service paired with a pretentious attitude and false advertising. This review is long overdue! I came into this salon on January 20 to get my hair cut for my birthday. I'm from Los Angeles, so I didn't know where to go to get my curly hair cut, but this was for sure the place! I had my hair cut by Kennedy, who started asking me questions about my hair and then cutting dry (which I love!). I had the absolute BEST hair wash from her assistant Chez! Kennedy was extremely professional and knew what she was doing. Salon was very clean and staff was friendly! If you need a curly hair cut, I HIGHLY recommend going to see Kennedy and Chez at J Salon! I picked J Salon for my big chop. I'm moving to the mainland, and decided it was time for a big change ie donate my hair. When I first walked into the salon, I didn't really know where to go. The seating area is kind of in the middle of the salon, but once you find it (ok its not thaat hard to find), you can take in all the fancy but modest (yes its possible) decor. Carmen did my haircut. I was really impressed with how nice she was dressed and how genuinely nice she seemed. Like she actually cared about her job, and enjoyed what she was doing. We briefly discussed what I wanted out of the haircut, and she cut most of my hair off in one quick chop. Than she washed it, refined the cut, and showed me how to wear my (naturally) curly hair without it being too frizzy. Next she highlighted my hair, and I had an awesome cappucino and cookies. Next she washed my hair which included a great scalp massage. Finally she straightened it for me. I was really impressed that she listened to what I wanted ( to wear my hair both curly and straight) and showed me just the best ways to do that. My highlights look awesome and natural (I've had tons of people as me IF i got highlights, and how good they look, just the reaction I was looking for!) J Salon is the perfect place to go for a big hairdo change. You should just stop looking at salons because you found it! This is the best salon on the island seriously I'm not kidding! I've been coming here since I was thirteen and Joe's standards for running his business is definitely elite. He has the best trained staff and easily the friendliest they do it all from simple trims to any of the trendy looks you might be looking for. You want your hair colored or your looking for the famous balayage (which I've gotten multiple from them) you'll get compliments for the whole year! In my profile picture I'm rocking one of their hair dye jobs called rose gold I believe, which was so fun and different! If your a guy and don't want a salon experience no problem inside J Salon is Phil's barber shop also run by Joe which is GREAT and if you don't believe me check out their instagram before and after pictures for yourself. And guys he does a hot towel treatment after your haircut or beard trim that my boyfriend swears he'd go in and pay for just that! P.S. I also get my eyebrows done here by the brow whisperer Gerry. I've never met anyone who is so knowledgeable about eyebrows she's really helped a novice like me who only bought her first eyebrow pencil a couple years ago. For my next visit, I decided to give Melvin a try. He gave me the best haircut I have ever had - this is the first time I LOVED my haircut. Normally, I like my cuts, but don't feel the love, you know what I mean? I got a shampoo from Zach this time. I asked for firm pressure and firm is what I got! I enjoyed it, but I think I'll go with a little less pressure next time. Lol. Melvin was friendly and just talkative enough. The conversation didn't feel awkward. He asked me what I wanted and I wanted bangs and layers! I didn't have bangs, so it was kind of a big change for me. I appreciated that he listened to what I had to say and adjusted accordingly. In the end, as you know from the second sentence of my review, I got the best haircut of my life! The layers are just so perfect - I don't know what he did but his technique was a bit different than what I'm used to because he cut the layers and went back in and seemed to make bigger cuts for longer layers (which was kind of scary, lol, since I wasn't used to that technique). The bangs are blunt across, like I asked for, but not perfectly staight across, which seems to give it an edge. Everyone loves them! I think my bangs have inspired others to get some "fringe". I am 95% certain I'm leaving my stylist of 10-11 years for Melvin. The only thing is that I feel so guilty - after all this time, she's kind of my friend, you know? But for the best cut of my life... I gotta go! Price for an awesome cut with Melvin is $65 - top stylists went up $10! Pricing is still market IMHO and well worth it with Melvin. After two not so great hair cuts elsewhere I gave up on my hair all together and over a year went by with me doing absolutely nothing to my hair...it sat there growing and growing and screaming for attention. I would see women walk by with gorgeous manes and yearn for hair like theirs, but alas I just couldn't find a place to trust my hair to after two unhappy experiences. When a friend of mine who generally finds a way to put a negative spin on anything (even puppies and rainbows) went to J Salon and said nothing but good things, I was intrigued...could it be? I checked the place out on Yelp and saw good review after good review, and played a game of Russian hair roulette and made myself an appointment to see Andria for a haircut and Joanne for a smoothing treatment. Two weeks later I came back to see Joanne for balayage highlights. I'm sitting here at my desk, and all I can think is "my hair is fabbbbbbbbulous!" I wish I had found J Salon a year ago and prior to my two ego smashing bad cuts, but alas...at least I have found a happy hair home now. Andria is a talented hairstylist who listens to you and tamed my messy mop and gave it sass and style while leaving it at a manageable length. She also has a great personality and was pleasant to talk to the whole time I was in there. Joanne is the hair color and hair tamer master. She not only whipped the frizz out of my hair, but she got the brassiness out of my hair and added the most wonderful pop of red to my hair and brought a fun brightness to it that I just absolutely adore. The staff at J Salon is friendly and accommodating, and the salon offers online appointment booking and follows up via email after your appointments to ensure customer satisfaction. I got a gift certificate for my birthday here 9 years ago. it was a generous gift certificate for $500 and we had a friend who was the shampoo girl and was the one behind the GC suggestion. And at the end of it all I was underwhelmed and didn't like what the stylist had done. After encouragement to go back and have the color altered I hesitantly did and they did correct it to my liking. I've been going to J Salon for all of my hair needs in Honolulu since 2005! Until I found Joe and his team of extreme talent I was never satisfied to go back to the same stylist again and again. All this changed when I met Joe and Joy. Of course after nearly 10 years you can't expect the salon and stylists to stay the same. Joy has since left the salon, but once you're given the All star treatment it's hard to leave it. A drink of your choice, super clean, spacious and pretty space. Very attentive staff. And a view! Last year I wanted to treat my Tutu with a haircut at J Salon. She had Melvin and Jovan on separate occasions, and both were spectacular. Now it's become a monthly tradition where I take her to lunch, and then we both get our hair cut by Jovan and Melvin. It's pretty damn great and adorable to get dolled up with your tutu at a high class salon. I've watched Melvin rise up through the ranks and he's a sweet doll. Listens well and is very talented. Jovan is their lead stylist (under Joe the owner) with many stints at Vidal Sasson's specialty training in London! Both of these super and cute men are a delight to be serviced by. Today is October 7 2022 . I went in for a balayage at one. Super friendly receptionist. My stylus was colorist and educator . Which I believed I was in good hands to ask for the exact same results . She nailed the color I wanted . A+++ . However her helper was an epic fail on styling . I have curly hair . I looking forward messy beachy hair just like the picture. which I have gotten in the pass and super achievable . however I walk out that salon with a big frizzy mess . Thank god for my hair clip . I ended up putting my hair up. Very disappointed in the styling . I don't recommend styling. the assistant seem frustrated. she blow dry my hair . Ended up making it into big frizzy Poof ball. grab the curler and Attempted to cruel it. Basically one epic fail on the styling . J Salon is located at the very end of Ward in the plaza. When you walk in, you'll notice a very modern decor and smiling faces to greet you right away. I had made an appointment with Andria because I was over my asymmetrical cut. I was ready for the next big step- full on pixie! I was taken to a mirror for a consultation as she looked at the condition of my hair and I showed her pics to give her an idea of what I was going for. She was very thorough in explaining what she thought would fit me and I was ready to jump right in! She took me to an area where I could change into one of their robes and keep my shirt clean, and I was whisked away to the shampoo bowl where an assistant gave me the best shampoo I've ever received. The scalp massage was so good, I didn't want it to end! After, I was taken to Andria's station, where I was served coffee and Biscoff biscuits, which were a very nice touch. She went right to work on my hair and seeing her in action was incredible! She was super focused on getting everything just right, but could still hold a conversation! And when everything was said and done, my hair looked beautiful! Still feminine and cute with some sass. ;) Even her coworkers gushed about how great it looked! Hit or miss at this salon. For the prices I guess I just expect so much better. Been to J Salon several times over the years. Had been with Monique and was happy with her but she left to focus on her family. I then saw Jovan who actually gave me a great haircut that grew out incredibly well. I only saw him once because I wasn't crazy about the styling he did. I should've stuck with him because I got Joy the next 2 times. Good cut the first time, worst haircut I ever got the second time. Don't know why the inconsistency but that was enough to make me not want to go back to J Salon and to look for a new stylist. Although, the color I got was always pretty good here. Again, for the price I just expect Wow and to leave looking like the picture I bring in. Is there a salon out there that will match a darn picture?! The newest location conveys everything J Salon stands for. Excellence, a demand for superior results and service beyond what you expect. I frequent the expert blonde colorist, Jessie and Joe Randazzo (salon owner) whose demand for perfection keeps him working on your hair until the closest cut to perfection has been achieved. It's difficult to get an appointment at a moment's notice so plan well in advance. If you want the best it's worth the wait. Me?
