I finally managed to go to all 3 Tranis-owned restaurants in San Pedro. So, my conclusion is that this is the best of the 3. As you walk in, you see the hostess, who gave us our name as they were busy. The bar area is near the entrance, which has several tables and bar stools. We were seated a few minutes later. The restaurant was a little crowded; the tables were too close to each other, which was my only complaint. You must try the New Style Calamari, delicious, Trani's Salad, Black Truffle Carbonara ,Local Swordfish were all good. The overall experience was great and Will be back . read more

Well what can I say this place is overpriced and the food isn't good at all. Me and my son went for dinner. We ordered calamari as an appetizer. It was very chewy . And I ordered the seafood Linguini it was very bad the tomato base taste like it was from à can it had the taste or à old tomato can sitting in a pantry rhe shrimp was very rough hard to chew and no flavor at all . I even offered some to my 18 yr old and he eats anything he couldn't swallow the food and told me it's nasty pops ,this wqs the first time he rejects me xtra food . He ordered the pork Parmesan which was ok nothing special . For a drink I ordered a beer and it was hot Literally it was room temperature. Last but not least I asked for the check and it was $116 I gave the waitress $140 and she asked me if I needed change and I asked her what was the total she said it's $126 when it was $116 I guess she wanted the check xtra $10 . It is rare that an eatery can surprise me, especially when I have known them for decades. But J Trani's Ristorante certainly did just that--- surprise me, in a good way. So I am a big food giver, it is how I show appreciation because when I want to thank someone, I want their belly to feel it. And this place has this really good Sunday Sauce plate, that I just know as their short rib plate. Like one time, I took it to a former colleague that I kinda wanted to make happy, cause of how they made me feel, and he warmed it up in the microwave. And it was not like microwaving fish, it was quite the opposite. Instead of pungent odor, the dish infused the small kitchenette with a wafting aroma, that almost felt like a morning after hug. It made everyone who wifed it, wonder who and what introduced good eats to another wise basic break-room. More broadly, I have never eaten anything at J Trani's that I have felt bad about buying. At least not that I can recall readily, which means that they have not seared a bad experience in my mind, which, is great flowers given to offer them considering that I have been coming to this place, time and again, for decades. Now the question becomes how they surprised me, when I know them to be a good spot consistently? So I called because I wanted to get a pizza for a guy I wanted to thank. And, they read me their pizza list and my bells, that signal positive experiences, went off. I heard sweet corn. And sweet corn is an ingredient I love by name. So I got the bacon and corn pizza, and also, I tried to explain the dish I wanted, remember I do not know it by Sunday Sauce. The person answering the phone, I forgot her name, explained that the Sunday sauce was their short rib plate. But instead of ordering there, I was like I'll just go so I can peruse the menu, Seconds later she called me back. I thought she was going to try to explain more to me, but I had made my mind up I wanted to see the menu. I was a smidge irked, I will not lie, I just did not want to continue the conversation after I had made my mind. So I picked up and she explained that she could text me the menu. And she did just that, the picture shows is the proof. Wow--- this was excellent service, not because they went the extra mile--- which they did- but because they centered my expectations, without me knowing it I had that expectation. They could have said, review the menu online, which I was not going to do. I was going to go and wait, which I could do, but it has its elements of a drag quotient. Instead, with the menu, in hand (well sort-of) was able to make the right choices for me. And She specifically told me that the order was going to take 25 minutes. This was the cherry tomato on top of the Burrata salad---- my whole experience was handled by the restaurant when I was not there. I got there and I had to wait a few minutes for my order to be packaged. As I waited, I heard a traditional mom and pop, and kid family unit discuss the choices the kid had made. The dad, I heard, say something like, I would have never, spoken to my dad like this when I was young, I do not want to here anymore from you. I heard this interaction, and kind of was glad because it gave me something to chew on (my thoughts). I wondered what the kid did and how I would handle the discipline? I also thought that some people still practice the stale or maybe fresh axiom of: Children should be seen not heard? The pizza was fantastic. I had a slice the next day for breakfast, and the bacon was crunch, the taste of corn was heavily present, and in short, it was a delicacy on my commute to work. read more

My friend who is a local San Pedran (San Pedro-an?) said this place is THE BEST Italian restaurant, to which I said "say less." I had the Sunday sauce, which is a short rib ragu in bolognese sauce. When I started eating it, my mind's analogue was instantly beef birria. Such a delicious fall apart texture. For dessert we had Crème brûlée and that was no slouch. The seasonal berries atop it were the pièce de résistance if we're going to switch nationalities to French in this review. My friend is traditionally a chicken marsala guy, but he had the lasagna here and said he fell in love. The service was impeccable. I couldn't have asked for a more picture perfect atmosphere with traditional dimly lit booth and table seating. It was like a movie. J Trani's never disappoints. It is old school ambience with a local clientele. We had a birthday celebration for 3 of our party of 5. We ordered family style that included pear Gorgonzola pizza, as always a delicious choice. Followed by Shashito peppers (hot but great), Sunday sauce short ribs, chicken marsala, lobster pasta and complementary ice cream complete with candles, Carmel swirl, Rocky road and Butter pecan. Really great first experience! This place came recommended by a friend and man was it a solid recommendation! We were originally a little bummed that the menu prices were higher than other older menus posted here on Yelp (I took new photos to add though), but I do think the food was worth the price with how gourmet the pasta felt. We split a pasta and a pizza and left with enough for leftovers! We also enjoyed the $3 gelatos for dessert (two scoops per order!!!). This spot has that quaint, local neighborhood vibe -- the kind of place where people gather with friends, hang out at the bar, and linger over drinks. My friends frequent it often and really enjoy it, so I had high hopes. For me, it was good... but not quite crave-worthy. The garlic bread was basic. Nothing bad about it, just nothing that made me think about it afterward. The truffle carbonara had solid flavor, but it was very rich -- a small portion was more than enough for me. The Caesar salad was fresh, though a little heavy on the pepper for my liking. The Chicken Madeira was good -- juicy chicken and a flavorful sauce, though it leaned slightly sweet. To be fair, I don't order Chicken Madeira often and I split it with a friend, so my knowledge on the dish is mediocre. Overall, everything else seemed solid. Even though my party didn't make a reservation, the hostess and manager were able to sneak us in and luckily we got seating at the bar. There Drew the bartender was amazing serving our drinks and taking our orders. Made my party feel very welcome. Fun fact, the staff said the restaurant recently celebrated their 100th anniversary. Now for the food. OMG this was the best Italian food I've ever had. First you can tell the food is going to be good by how small and focused the menu is. There aren't pages upon pages of a menu. Just a short one page one that the kitchen can master. First thing that came out was the jalapeño bread and it was so good. Had a little spicy kick with buttery texture. Then oysters came out and they were so fresh and delicious. Finally had the bone in pork chop Parmesan. Drew the bartender said this was his favorite item and I could see why. Those who know San Pedro know that Trani's is a local institution. Decent quality food served in large portions is their product. Pricey for what started out as a family Italian eatery. Nothing really unique or esoteric about the menu, but it is pricey with average dinners running $34-42 and salads adding another $16 on average. This place was packed on a Saturday night and the waiters kept getting orders wrong. It's a small place with tables crammed together making it difficult for waitstaff to reach tables without hitting customers. I got hit 18 times by waitstaff crew members. I ordered seafood linguini and shared a salad. I would've preferred a clam sauce but good old red sauce is what they used and it was pretty good. Desserts are great. The variety is large and the quality is high. One cautionary note: it gets loud in this restaurant. Very very loud due to the crammed in tables. I couldn't really hear anything my table mates were saying. Also, make sure you've got plenty of time. We got to Trani's before 6 and left at 9 pm! You're forewarned! I wasn't expecting the place to have so much soul! My server was absolutely amazing! He was helpful with my questions about the menu, and sold me on a special that wasn't on the menu, but I'll get to that in a moment. To start, I had the calamari, which was truly the best calamari I've had in my life. It was plated more elegantly than I've ever seen calamari plated, and the sauce on the calamari was absolutely delectable. 10/10! For my entree, I had the halibut! This wasn't on the menu, but it was a special the waiter informed me of. I went with this suggestion, and was not disappointed. The halibut was plump and perfect, every bite better than the next! The lemon caper sauce was absolutely delicious, and the spinach and potatoes were the perfect compliment to the fish. I paired my meal with Josh red wine. How have I not written a review for the amazing J.Trani yet???? Near us for Italian, we've always had a soft spot for Giorgio (the man himself!) and Giorgio's in Rolling Hills (which is very good in its own right, although we do miss the old school ambience of the old location up the street from The Red Onion) but looking for a change-up perhaps 6 or 7 years ago now, I, possibly regrettably (poor Giorgio's!), found J.Trani in nearby San Pedro. Ever since then, when choosing great Italian food with great service and ambiance, we usually choose our daughter's favorite over Giorgio's. I'm so sorry, Giorgio! Before kids, we were at Giorgio's a lot...since kids...we are slaves to them and their picks. Jeez, if only they paid! Anyway...the daughter's longtime favorite at J. Trani that leaves her wanting to come back again and again is the spaghetti and meatballs (even though her mother's own homemade version is absolutely fantastic as well). The usual standouts for me have been "The Peppers" and the "Sunday Sauce". First, I'll talk about those "traditional Italian peppers": Tempura shishito peppers, sweet chili beurre blanc, feta cheese, basil (description taken straight from the menu...minus the traditional Italian peppers part, duh). I think these were suggested to us by the waiter on our very first visit and I was VERY skeptical. Okay, a little confused too. BUT NO MO! These things are the bomb...and as is typical with shishito peppers, some peppers are harmless and some bomb your mouth with burning heat...so beware! I can't tell you how awesome these things are; I even feel guilty eating them. If I were Catholic, I'd have to go to Confessional. Side story: When restaurants first opened up again after Covid, my wife and I chose J. Trani as our very first date night (outside on the street, of course); sorry, daughter! And the only thing on my mind was...HOLY CRAP, WE'RE EATING OUT AT A REAL, HONEST TO GOODNESS RESTAURANT AGAIN! well, yes, that too but also THE PEPPERS. Seriously, not the amazing pasta, great cocktails, well everything else that is amazing (Oh, also post-Covid Freedom)...my mind was laser focused on THE PEPPERS. So order the peppers, ok? Next...that Pasta with Sunday Sauce. Truly one of the best dishes I've ever had. I love me a real hearty beefy/short-ribby (or boar-y) ragu. If I recall correctly, Sunday Sauce is the tomato sauce made with anything else a cook has left in the kitchen at the end of the week. Kinda like how San Francisco's Italian fishermen in the late 1800s would take their leftover catch and throw it in a pot with tomatoes, herbs and olive oil and voila, Cioppino was born. Ya didn't know that, did ya? Come to think of it, I don't recall ever seeing Cioppino on J. Trani's menu...ahem...hint hint...it is, after all, one of my favorite ever dishes. But I digress. Order the Sunday Sauce; it's wonderful. And one time, they served it over cooked leftover pieces of pasta used in other dishes, carrying on the "leftovers" theme. I'm a sucker for a good story/theme, so I eat that crap up...and how, I did! Over the years, my family has also enjoyed the delicious pork belly appetizer as well as the fish carpaccio appetizer and the meatball appetizer and the pizza. My wife and son repeatedly order "The Best" Veal (and sometimes pork) chop parmesan, a massive dish, usually cooked on the bone and comes with a side of delicious penne with a slightly creamy tomato sauce. On our last visit last Friday for my daughter's 14th birthday, J.Trani and our wonderful server did not disappoint, making for one of the best dining experiences ever. Truly. We had such a great time, we chose to put a family dinner at J. Trani's on the books monthly so we'll be back Friday, October 6th...and Friday, November 3rd...Life gets really busy and this is the first time we're trying something like this so hopefully we can continue, you know, until high school when our kids turn into monsters. On our last visit, we tried the Calamari Milanese appetizer for the first time. The waiter suggested it prepared this way rather than "new style" (a more traditional fried calamari with a Thai aioli) which I must say is a pretty bold suggestion for a typical 14 year old girl and 11 year old boy but he had our kids' numbers alright because they are far from typical kid eaters. We absolutely adored this dish, which disappeared in seconds (ok, not really, we wanted to savor it). But we are definitely ordering this again (and again). The calamari was cooked perfectly We stuck with just one appetizer and the yummy warm, fresh bread to start in order to save our appetites for the main entrees. For dinner, the girl, of course, ordered the Spaghetti and Meatballs. The wife and boy ordered their usual "The Best" Veal chop (I've had 2 rounds of leftovers of it this week and I'm going to polish it off for dinner tonight...not joking). Oh no! Trani's is a San Pedro staple. This is where you go when you want that old vibe of how a good San Pedro restaurant used to be back in the day. Low lights, great food, great people. Reminds me of Antes restaurant and Cigos restaurant back in the 1970's-1980's but modern. It has that old school local Italian restaurant vibe. Cozy. The food is awesome and we have never been let down. The service however can be spotty which is why I gave 4 stars instead of 5. You may go one time and immediately be served bread and drinks to start, but another time you might get overlooked because it's busy and you'll have to ask for bread or something to drink after 5-10 minutes. Just depends. Same thing when you're done eating. You might be sitting there wondering what happened with the check. But on the other hand it could be seen as a positive thing because nobody is rushing you out and you get to enjoy your time there. Depends on how you look at it. Anyway, great restaurant. The Sunday Sauce is the best. Reminds me of eating at Nonnas house. That's a meal she would whip up for you when you go visit and just sit there and listen to her tell old stories. read more

What a disappointment. My boyfriend and I had an ongoing debate about which location we prefer -- J. Trani's (San Pedro) or Phil Trani's (Long Beach). After last Friday, the clear preference is Phil Trani's (Long Beach). We will no longer go to J. Trani's (San Pedro). Food was good, but not worth the uncomfortable experience. We arrived and wanted to sit at the end of the bar while we waited. The bartender confirmed it was okay, and as I sat down a hostess (Robyn/Robin) rushed over and told us: we couldn't sit there; that spot was a "service area;" we could not seat ourselves, and, she would come back to take our drink order. She never did. When she eventually "seated" us, instead of politely escorting us like most restaurants would, she waved her arms around from behind the bar like she was hailing a taxi in NYC. Very undignified. Then, still without taking our drink order, turned and walked away again, leaving us to flag down the bartender to finally place our drink order. During our meal we watched several other parties sit in that same "service area" and enjoy drinks or dinner without being harassed or asked to move. At one point a couple sat themselves right under Robyn's nose; instead of being "the enforcer" again, she went over and told them, "Oh, next time, you can just call me and I'll get you in." It was obvious we were being treated differently, so my boyfriend went over to Robyn and politely asked why we were singled out. "Why us?" "What did we do?" Her reply was simply, "Oh. Sorry. It was rush hour." We have nothing against the kitchen. The food is great, but Robyn's disparate service and dismissive attitude made the evening uncomfortable, unwelcoming and frankly, insulting. The Pork Chop Parmesan is delicious, but the service left such a bad taste, we won't be coming back. If you value dignified, respectful service no matter the time of day, consider crossing the bridges to Long Beach and give Phil Trani's a try. read more

We arrived in San Pedro the night prior to a cruise. I made a dinner reservation at J Trani's based on the Yelp reviews. We were not disappointed. The restaurant does not have its own parking lot but customers are allowed to use the bank parking next to it as well as street parking. We arrived a few minutes before our 6 PM reservation and were immediately seated in a comfortable banquet. Our server Monica was friendly and attentive. The décor is old world, dim lightly with a cozy feeling. Service began with a loaf of warm crusty bread. We ordered Lentil Soup, Pasta Bolognese and Chicken Marsala. The soup was delicious, a thick broth, plenty of vegetables and beans, very tasty. The Pasta was perfectly cooked, the meat sauce rich and full of flavor. Chicken Marsala was a large portion with two breasts, plenty of mushrooms, mashed potatoes and a delicious sauce. We did not have and room for dessert but was surprised by the complementary anniversary gelato. The dessert was a wonderful finale to our delicious meal. J Trani's is on our revisit list. read more
