Seemed like only one type of cheese too. Hardly any spinach or artichokes in it. Chips were great. Both our steaks were way undercooked. I like medium; my wife likes medium well (no pink). Hers was returned twice, mine once. I bailed after the first send-back and ordered the redfish. It was amazing. Unfortunately, our friends tried to be polite and would not eat their food until we had ours so this situation caused their food to get cold. All the sides were terrible. Brussels sprouts overcooked. Holy cow, yum. I loved this dining experience. I had the pleasure of having a Christmas Eve Eve dinner with my husbands family where the adults footed the expensive bill. And it did not disappoint! Lots of wine selections and apps, the firecracker shrimp is the WAY to go!! There were so many good entrees to select from, steak, prime rib, rib eye, sirloin, along with salmon, shrimp, lobster and lamb. Hubs got salmon with garlic mash and I got the grouper entree with roasted brussel sprouts entree. I cried when the sprouts were gone, they were that good! The place is very inconspicuous and out in Jill country, since we live in Austin, hubs family lives in Dripping Springs and Marbles Falls, we decided this place was equal distance for everyone with a 30 min drive. Worth it. Dollar signs for sure but the experience rocks! The dining tables have macaroni grill style paper with coloring pencils to draw and play tic tac toe. Our bill for 18 adults was close to $800 and everyone had a blast dining. No auto gratuity added on large parties, so you tip yourself what you believe is appropriate. Bathrooms have actual linens which surprised me! Whoo country life and yummy steakhouses, J5 you're lovely! The only thing I'd have as a downfall was because of our big party when refilling water, the waitress did spill and break a glass of red wine near me and splashed my feet. Delicious, perfectly cooked med/rare filet. The artichoke dip was good and homemade chips. The cheesecake was also legit and not that fake, soft , buttery crap that most restaurants serve. If you want a true southern belle as your server, ask for laurel or floral (masking policy made it hard to understand her). I've been here a few times but never got to sit inside because of Covid until tonight. Tonight's visit finally pushed me over the edge and I felt like I needed to post a good review. The French onion soup was excellent. When you put it on the menu it's often a litmus test for me for how good the meal is going to be, because it's easy to go cheap, but theirs was homemade with a flavorful broth, good presentation with garnish, and quality cheese. Homemade artichoke dip and tortilla chips were great and the bowl was spotless when we were finished. The steaks were absolutely cooked to perfection. Excellent cuts, consistent cook, and very tender. My only recommendation would be for an option for finishing salt or butter for the salt fiends out there. The majestic redfish was great and juicy, and came with a crab topping. It came out more grilled than blackened as I had ordered it, but I still very much enjoyed it. The side options aren't fancy, but are well done. We enjoyed a seemingly popular, homemade penne mac w/ creamy cheese that I saw on several other tables, and some delicious Brussels sprouts. The grand finale and highlight of the night was the dessert - a bread pudding with copious bourbon (?) sauce that beat any other I've ever had at any fine dining or even New Orleans restaurant. It should be noted that they were packed and although we were told it would be 35-40 minutes, we only waited 10 minutes for a table, and the service was very quick. We were all pleasantly surprised given the worker shortage everywhere. Overall, a real gem for the Hill Country with high quality food and drinks from top to bottom. No shortcuts, no frozen and fried menu fillers, and fantastic service. Price was very fair too. We will absolutely be back, and I can't wait to show our friends and neighbors. read more

Ok, hands down five stars huge steaks seriously worth every dime , I wasn't expecting this generous portion gee how can this be at this day and age for all you Austinites living in the late 70 and early 80s Texas Tumbleweed was big 24 oz steaks but they were close 14 oz steaks reason for the five star ratings. Service is superb so you will greeted with smiles graciously southern hospitality emotionally the timing is exceptional. The steak is amazing and desserts are a major plus. I will be visiting again soon to try many other dishes with exquisite flavors. I guess today was a good day for posting great review for I wasn't seeking a review this wonderful. We did not enjoy our experience here. Very slow service. Our server could not help us with finding menu items that could be prepared gluten free. She also didn't really know the menu at all. We asked about the red fish on the menu and she laughed and said she didn't know anything about fish. It was strange that our server couldn't tell us anything about $40 entrees. Their recent expansion and renovations are fantastic. Great steaks at a reasonable price. Their salads and appetizer are also really good and you have several options. Nice large bar for hanging out and a nice big covered outside patio with a large backyard for the kids to run around (bring a football or soccer ball), it is completely fenced in so you dont have to worry about where they are. read more

It was easy to make a reservation but it didn't seem that we really needed to on a Saturday night at 7:00pm. Our waitress, Anne, was super nice and attentive and make our experience very enjoyable. When I wasn't sure if I wanted to try the Brussels sprouts, she brought me a bite to try because she wanted to be sure that I was happy with my order. We both ordered a steak, Filet and Ribeye and both were cooked to how we requested. Adding the lemon butter made it even more tasty. It was fun being able to entertain ourselves by drawing on the table paper while waiting for our food. There's a full bar so you can get pretty much any drink you want. Lastly, the brownie dessert was AMAZING. Big enough for two to share! Overall it was a great experience and we will be back! read more

We have had great meals at J5 many times and have always left happy. Unfortunately this visit was not at all similar to the past. We ordered the crunch salad and a chopped salad to start our meal. The chopped salad was ok, I've had much better, but the crunch salad was inedible. It appeared to be the stems of some sort of vegetable, not really sure what, but it was not tasty or worth the price.. After the salads the meal progressively went downhill from there. The baked potatoes were days old and had been reheated and were soggy, rode hard, and put away wet. We both had fish dishes, Salmon and Grouper, and both were so overcooked that we were unable to eat them. The reason I gave this review two stars is because the wait staff was great and the new bar and dining area is nice. I would hope that they can take the money I spent this evening and send their cook back to school for a bit. That way I wouldn't feel so bad about what I spent for a very substandard meal. read more

We been going to this restaurant for years. It's become quite popular. Reservations is a must. However my recent experience was extremely disappointing. We (party of 4) arrived on time for 6pm reservations. We order a bottle of wine, then appetizers . Then we ordered dinner. All was well until they started rushing us to leave after only one hour. They wanted to remove our plates while we still eating!!! Then told us they needed the table, extremely rude. Total time there less than 70 minutes. We are so happy we have such a good quality steak house near us. We've been 5 times and we've never had a bad dinner. I like my steaks well done ( gasp!) and I typically get burned shoe leather or a bloody medium. At J5 they cook it perfectly every time. It's done but not died out. My husband likes medium rare and his is perfect as well. The Brussels sprouts are so good as well as the firecracker shrimp ( I believe that's the name). I enjoyed this place a lot. My main critique is nothing on their menu seems Japanese, or even Japanese inspired. I got a chopped salad with ranch dressing, an 8oz filet mignon with crab and lemon butter, fries as a side, and crab cakes as an appetizer. Everything was delicious, but nothing was particularly Japanese. Examine the menu and you will see it's not just what I ordered either. I truly loved the Trading Post and the owners are fantastic! Jen is so friendly and sweet, she greeted me with a hug when we came to check out the new J5. The happy hour runs from 4-6pm and it's 1/2 off appetizers and $8.00 bottles of wine - making everything a fantastic deal. Let me start by raving about the Firecracker Shrimp. It should be called CRACK shrimp because it is SO addictive and delicious I keep coming back for more! Ok, that sounds wrong. The crab cakes are lightly breaded, perfectly cooked, the sauce that comes with them is delicious. I also loved the fish tacos - huge portions here. The spinach artichoke dip is incredible, I love the crispy chips that come with the order. The best part about this place is the owners, service, and food. Well, that's just about everything! Basically, you can't go wrong here. I know some of their entrees are a little high in price, but they deliver. Their grilled salmon at Trading Post used to be incredible, and I would confidently say they are just as good, but even BETTER at their new J5 location. Man, I have finally found a killer steak house in the greater Austin area! Ever since Sullivan's closed downtown earlier this year, I've been looking for a worthy replacement, and I've found it in Spicewood, TX. One would think it would be easy to find a steakhouse in Austin, TX but generally I've found most to be mediocre at best, and generally overpriced for the fare provided. J5 is a gleaming diamond in the rough...go get your steak on, post haste. This is a happy restaurant on the Western outskirts of town, way out 71 way, full of great service with a smile (thank you Anna!) and tasty food. The center booth area has the coolest decorations on the walls made from wine corks and the whole decor says happy and mellow...not an ounce of the pretentiousness that seems to be taking over the ATX these days. And the lighting is prefect...low and yellow. My personal fav :) As for the food, w started with the the Firecracker shrimp (breaded) and carpaccio, both tasty and wonderful. I'd go carpaccio over shrimp next time. Main meals were Ribeye (medium rare and actually served that way) with a blue-cheese, bacon and onion topping & lamb chops (lollipops), both tasty as all get out...tender, grilled to perfection and perfectly seasoned. Sides were simple but fresh and tasty (green beans and asparagus) and the salads were okay. For desert, we tried the the chocolate pecan brownie and had coffee.
