Very excited to have been invited for an early opening of Jacaranda. The restaurant focuses on seasonal ingredients for their tasting menu. I got a nonalcoholic pairing with the meal. Many of the dishes are very vegetable forward and with impressive prep + innovation. Presentation was spot on with every dish, feeling both unique and memorable in taste. The most impactful dish of the night was their artichoke dish. Texture was meaty, taste was also feeling both meaty and vegetable like at the same time. It was nothing like anything I've tasted. A close second is their duck dish, which is one of the best ducks I've had even compared to all the fine dining restaurants in LA. The combination of the duck with its broth and a light salad was a perfect end to the savory portion of the meal. Desserts were light and flavorful, a great end. I loved those candied fruits, especially the mulberries. Overall, an incredible and unique dining experience even when compared to all the diverse options in LA. There's nothing like this in the city and is very much a great breath of fresh air for the dining scene. It's got all the fancy aspects of LA fine dining when it comes to the food, but doesn't have the stuffiness where you feel rushed or constantly watched. The interesting music choice playing in the background is also a very nice touch. (Can't spoil what it is) I can't wait to come back for more.

Communal Table can also seat 1 person reservations which is cool since some snotty restaurants require 2 person minimum.

Daniel Patterson, formerly of Guide Michelin trois étoiles Coi in San Francisco, is opening Jacaranda, his first solo high-end restaurant in Los Angeles although he has for years had Alta Adams collaborating with local chef Keith Corbin to create an informal California café/bistrot which hired people from the neighborhood to enhance employment opportunities. It was similar to Lokal, another collaboration with Roy Choi, that nobly attempted to economically elevate the neighborhood in terms of good food choices and local hiring. Now, Chef Patterson and Sarah Lewitinn are collaborating to establish a 30 seat restaurant that includes a Stammtisch/communal table that reflects their previous Jaca Social Club pop-up dinners at their home where conviviality was the keynote to their sumptuous feasts. So Jacaranda's goal is to carry on the party hearty atmosphere as well as furthering fine dining using local, top quality California ingredients and transforming them into a 10+ course tasting menu for dinner and and a 6+ course tasting menu for lunch. Matt Tinder is the Dessert Chef who has some wild ideas about the possibilities of what constitutes desserts. One of them is kelp and dark chocolate which is intriguing to say the least. To get into this soirée for bons vivants, there is a $200 deposit which is refundable upon payment of the $295 for the dinner en site. There is also a minimum of $100 charged for beverages so the price of entry is formidable. However, a dinner on the level of 3 stars is rarely if ever cheap. You get what you pay for.

Jacaranda is a an amazing experience! The dishes, the service and the vibe are on par with the best restaurants in Los Angeles. My wife took our son and I for my birthday and it was lovely. Each dish was fresh, delicious, surprising, and impeccably presented works of art. It was a 10 course tasting menu by chef Daniel Peterson and his wife Sarah Lewithinn. Chef even came out to present some of his dishes to us. It was wonderful.

After being fortunate enough to attend a pop-up version of the restaurant at the end of 2025, I cannot tell you how excited I was to have a meal at Jacaranda, the long awaited, newly opened fine-dining restaurant from celebrity chef, Daniel Patterson and Sarah Lewitinn. The evening was perfect, and the night felt like an expertly curated playlist, taking you on a thoughtful journey from start to finish. From the moment you walk in and are greeted by the host/co-owner, (DJ, music biz vet, and Chef Daniel's better half, formerly known as Ultragrrrl), you are seated at a comfy table, met by a tasteful selection of art, and taken by the décor, which is welcoming, but Cali chic. The staff and service were professional, attentive and present, but not at all in the way. As a sober guy, the selection of kombucha, teas, and non-alc beverages were not only amazing, but the perfect pairing for what was easily one of the best meals I've ever had. People with palates MUCH more sophisticated than I can describe in detail every ingredient, place of origin, and flavor, so I'll leave that to them, but what I will say is that each bite was at once complex, nuanced, delicious, spirited, and fresh. There is a playfulness at work in the dishes that belies a love of not only the craft and art, but in making something incredibly "eatable". (No, not edible, just simple and wonderful - a high compliment for someone of his pedigree). I never felt the food was showy for showy sake, but rather like attending a concert of a legendary musician who's thrilled to be back on a headline tour after jamming with others, full of appreciation for the audience, the artform, and at the peak of their powers. With a focus on fresh and local while also being wildly original, Daniel and his crack team bring big, unique, bright flavor combinations to every plate. Whether a play on a time-honored tradition or making a new standard, I can honestly say that there were things I tasted which had me roll my eyes in disbelief, put my fork or spoon down to let the flavors hit, and just take it all in. Of course the presentation and tableside explanations were informative and flawless, but what was surprising was how many courses, how generous the portions were considering the level of ingredients and execution, and how after all the plates I didn't know if I could eat another bite - a far cry from the stereotype of eating a chef's tasting menu of tiny bits and still being hungry! That said, by the time Pastry Chef Matt Tinder's dessert came out, I had to find a way, and I'm glad I did, as it was one of the most insane desserts I've ever had. No hyperbole. If I were less verbose and could offer just one word to review, it would be this; FUN. From the shoegaze, Brit-Pop and needle-drop perfection of the music (not too loud or drawing attention to itself and pairing as nicely as the drinks - thanks Sarah!), to the laid-back atmosphere, friendly service, and excited patrons, it was never stuffy or pretentious. This is a spot for anyone, and considering the price per person is less than a night out to a show, with food, drinks, tix, fees, and parking, it's something anyone can experience, which is thoughtful given the fact that LA is still reeling from brutal economic times. My hope is that people treat themselves and get over any preconceived ideas about fine dining, because it was through Chef Daniel's love of food, hospitality, and his craft that I overcame my own. I could go on, but I will just say this, as a native Angeleno who is thoroughly enjoying the food renaissance taking place in my hometown, I am SOOOO glad that Daniel and Sarah have created a warm, inviting, non-intimidating, and accessible addition to the conversation by creating an affordable, supremely delicious, hip, and fun hang where the uninitiated and novice can comfortably sit beside those who frequent the other world class tasting menus about town. I'm booking a follow-up res as we speak, as I'm dying to take some friends to watch their faces with every bite.

very excited about Jacaranda exclamation point I was blown away by the food last week. Chef Daniel Patterson is an inspiration and we are lucky to have him in Los Angeles. Such beautiful, thoughtful, vegetable forward cuisine in a chic cozy environment. The experience is awesome and if you don't drink the nonalcoholic juice pairing was next level. excited for their summer menu changes!

Jacaranda is one of those rare restaurants that manages to surprise. Offering a unique style of cooking in a fine dining landscape plagued by copy and paste menus, Jacaranda's vegetable focused cuisine feels fresh and focused and wholly special. The meal starts, continues, and ends with genuine hospitality on multiple fronts. First is the co-owner Sarah, whose vivacious personality has an infectious. She greets you at the door and escorts you out as you leave. Jacaranda is refined but never cold thanks to her honest welcoming nature. The rest of the staff is just as hospitable, with poised motion and friendly discussion throughout the meal. The food is impeccable. Flavors tend more toward refined and balanced, so don't expect heavy French preparations or fatty meats. Those styles are tasty too, but Jacaranda is going for flavors that are delicate, poised, and beguiling. The food is clearly Californian and oozes with what some would call a sense of place. The grilled and raw vegetables exemplifies this philosophy with what felt like a dozen or so vegetables treated each in its own way, cut perfectly, and assembled just so to create the most delicious salad I've ever had. The tofu with seaweed gelee and caviar screams hippy California food but whispers flavor delicately on the tongue. I scraped the bowl clean. The wheatgrass sauce with the asparagus made me lick the plate, and the artichoke dish was the best artichoke dish I've ever had anywhere. As an avid meat eater, the vegetables here are a triumph and make me proud to live in California. The meat dishes are also amazing though. Stuffed morels and potato are luscious, and the large serving of duck breast was world class. Chef Patterson certainly knows how to cook meat too. The desserts were fantastic. The palate cleanser was delightfully complex, with contrasting textures of granita, cream, and the most cherry tasting cherries I've ever had. A half dozen little surprise garnishes for the refreshing bowl. The chocolate dessert is the best chocolate dessert I've had in years, rivaling Providence's famous chocolate program just down the street. The textures of cocoa nib and raw chocolate and date come together to taste almost like a Ferraro rocher meets a smore. The final plate of fruit ranged from simple raw to complexly cooked. I left feeling tranquil. The pictures of Jacaranda's food look simple but do not do it justice. This place is delicious. It feels like a ballet: light and breezy but poised and balanced and pitch perfect. This restaurant is not rock and roll. It is not classical music. It is a unique melody that makes its own genre. I hope to come back soon to listen to whatever music Jacaranda composes as the seasons progress.

California offered an immediate rush of light, space, and possibility. My memory is that when I turned my phone back on at LAX, my friend messaged to say he'd gotten us the hookup at Bestia. That dinner belongs to a chapter in which I spent considerable time in California and felt energized by the contrast with New York. My friend is highly discerning, with impeccable taste in food, design, and culture. He notices details most people miss, so when a place impresses him, I pay attention. From the moment I saw his message, I knew the reservation meant something. Even before we entered, Bestia's character was evident. Faded lettering crossed the corrugated metal facade, while brick walls and old loading doors preserved the warehouse's industrial history. Inside, enormous windows and garage doors brought light into a room shaped by glass, exposed ductwork, and warm amber pendants. When I fantasize about living in a loft, many of the attributes I picture are here, especially the incredible windows and connection to the street. Inside the restaurant, the dining room achieved a combination I rarely encounter. It had the table density and collective buzz of a great New York restaurant, but within a large, design-forward space closer in scale to something found in Chicago. New York creates energy through tight rooms, while Chicago excels at ambitious spaces with strong architectural identities. Bestia captured both advantages and made its considerable footprint feel alive and unified. We sat shoulder to shoulder at a pale stone counter facing the open kitchen. Golden era hip hop was playing, and A Tribe Called Quest still rings a very specific bell. I ordered the squid ink pasta, and it was exquisite, with enough depth and precision to command attention amid everything happening around us. We also spotted an unmistakably A-list celebrity, whom I will leave unnamed, making the night feel quintessentially Los Angeles. During that period, I often stayed at the Ace Hotel downtown, and the Arts District felt vibrant, raw, and full of possibility. The proximity to Skid Row could be deeply jarring, with severe hardship existing beside ambitious development and expensive restaurants. That contrast kept the neighborhood from feeling like a neat story of urban renewal, even as Bestia seemed to anchor its evolution. The warehouses and loading docks gave the area a character that no new development could convincingly recreate. Nearby, I also remember the American Apparel complex during its demise and the rise of impossibly cool Los Angeles designer John Elliott. His Escobar sweatpants and Villain hoodie helped define the kit of that moment; loyalists will understand. Los Angeles is a fickle city, drawn toward whatever is new and shiny, which makes Bestia's longevity especially impressive. Scene without substance is plastic, and Bestia earned its electricity through exceptional cooking, assured service, and a remarkable space; if I lived in Los Angeles, this would be one of the places I'd rely on whenever I wanted to impress someone. This is absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in the world.

Food: The meal is rich. My favorite is their Cherokee tomatoes. Plump, sweet and juicy. The tomato Caesar isn't your typical salad. It is a slice of tomato topped with dressing, basil, breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese. One of my favorites this meal for its creativity and blend of flavors. Beef rib eye (32oz) is a lot for two people. Comes with bone marrow and sea salt to sprinkle on. Great char and flavor making it a good staple. The rich chicken liver paired perfectly with their incredible sourdough bread. - Green Chile Stew - 5/5: Outstanding. It was packed with large, tender chunks of pork, and the fresh flour tortillas were amazing. - Trout - 3/5: The biggest disappointment of the meal. While the fish was meaty and cooked well, it lacked flavor and felt very basic. - Famous Cornbread - 4/5: Good, but it didn't quite live up to the hype for me. Final Thoughts: Dunsmoor serves some excellent food, especially the chicken liver and green chile stew, but the overall experience was held back by the long waits and noisy dining room. I can see why it's so popular, but I think some of the excitement is driven by hype. Even so, I'd come back to explore more of the menu.
