3 of the 4 fried green tomatoes that came with this appetizer, plus slaw and spicy sauce
    Susan E.

A group of adults and children celebrated my birthday with me on a recent weekday evening. We were seated in a windowed small and narrow room at the front of the building. The table was really too small for our group, but we made it work. Service was superb and well-timed. We started off with drinks and a couple of appetizers. Happy hour gave us the appetizers at half price and $1 off alcoholic drinks. Then we ordered dinner. One of the children in the group needed a gluten free meal, but the gf menu was for adults, so a burger was ordered without a bun. Everyone enjoyed their food, but I was unimpressed with one of the dishes everyone seems to have raved about: the blue crab spinach gorgonzola ravioli. While the ravioli and its accompanying sauce and parmesan flakes tasted good, the ravioli was overcooked and the presence of crab barely noteworthy in the dish. Two of us ordered this and neither of us was impressed. We had 2 desserts to share at the table, a warm blondie with ice cream and a gluten-free chocolate cake. Both were deemed excellent by the group. This is a great restaurant and we will return again soon.

Was so wonderful to bring out of town friends here. I've moved to South Austin so it's a pretty good hike up here. But SO worth it. The complimentary pimento cheese spread was so good. Dinner was not rushed and came out in a great speed. Our waitress was so friendly and none of our drinks were ever empty. It was a little more noisy than usual but it was a Friday night was well with many large parties. I had the charizo stuffed pork tenderloins with smashed taters and area fresh grilled vegetables. The wonderful thing about Jack Allen's besides the taste of the food is that they source locally. My friends both has the New York strip fried steak. They loved it. I had had it before and it is simply the best!! Cannot wait to come back again!

This might be my new favorite restaurant in north Austin. The food, drinks and service are always top tier. My favorites right now are the spicy mango margarita and the crab stuffed shrimp. The catfish appetizer is delicious as well. Absolutely no complaints!

I am a teacher, and they offer 50% off for teachers when you show your ID! The service was amazing, the restaurant is super cute, and the food was AMAZING. Their pepper cheese and margaritas were incredible. My favorite was definitely the blondie with ice cream for dessert. So, so, so yummy!

There was a long line to get in for dinner on a Friday but we hang out by the bar until they called us. Our server, Luke, was absolutely the best! He provided my husband with a great recommendation and I loved my steak arugula salad. I was not a fan of the potato slices in the salad...pears would be such a better choice. I also ordered a mojito which was sooooo good! The dessert was incredible. Overall a great experience and the food was good. Nice choices for my daughter too!

Jack Allen's rocks Consistently outstanding food, fresh farm to table type atmosphere Bartenders provide outstanding service and make fantastic, cocktails, well balanced, and packing a punch The Texas redfish was an outstanding dish. A friend recommended it highly to me last time I was in, and I made a note to try it so glad I did. If you have not had this delicacy, you need to try it you will be thankful that you did. It is full of flavor. It is just simply scrumptiously delicious! Jam packed bar - NBA playoff game on TV All made for a great late afternoon meal

Spectacular service. Excellent birthday meal - we will be back! Kiddo's 14th birthday and he wanted a good burger and guacamole. Jack Allen's we said! The Fat Jack is always amazing! The crispy chicken sandwich was so flavorful, the crispy redfish was huge and delicious and their kids tenders were thoughtful and not just junk food. Their sweet potato fries and regular fries were excellent. The kids had sparkling blueberry lemonade mocktails and loved them. Mama added their habanero sauce to her fish and LOVED it. The guacamole is always excellent and (score) on Mondays they have happy hour all evening so we got it 1/2 price. They brought him a birthday dessert (he chose the blondie) and the family loved it. My husband got a cantarito drink and loved it. We will be back! Special thanks to Kayla and our amazing server Catalina! Thanks for making us feel so welcome on the heated patio. Please like my review and photos if you find them helpful!

Jack Allen's is a restaurant you always get delicious food! There are always specials and if you don't see anything on the menu that fancies your cravings, there is always soup of the day. The service is usually exceptional, however there are times when it is a little slower but understand that is the exception. The restaurant always looks clean and organized. It breathes farm fresh.

A tasty treat for lunch. As interesting lunch menu with some characteristic menu twists I feel are noteworthy. Like the special of that day was a Philly Steak sandwich of sorts with deep fried jalapeño and stuff. It was good. The wife had a bowl of today's meatloaf soup (that was a new one). Again good. Server was good. I had dread on the menu that every team member knows everything. I tested ours on the familiar and unfamiliar faces on the walls in artwork. She knew them all or she was BS'n me on the one. All good. Good food, drinks and service. I will stop again if given the opportunity. CritDicks

I went with a large group And the staff was so kind and patient. We went on a Friday night so you can imagine how busy it was, but they made it feel like we were the most important. We ordered appetizers, drinks, and entrees. The jalapeño cornbread was delicious and a great shareable! The chips and guacamole are also a good option, especially for a large group. The mocktails were pretty good as well. For dinner I had the blacken shrimp enchiladas and it did not disappoint. It is so filling and if you want you could take a good portion home. I had a really great experience and would definitely return. Get there early because it a local favorite

    Is this place dog-friendly?

Hey Tiffany, I wasn't sure if dogs were allowed, here as I've only eaten here about three times and always inside. I checked the restaurant "features", in YELP, and at the bottom of the list, it mentions "Dogs Allowed". Yeah!…

    Do they take reservations?

Yes- better for days in advance... I believe they have an app, but I normally call.

Has the brunch buffet reopened, or it is still brunch off the menu?

What I've heard, is Covid has made it a thing of the past :'( . They're not having limited offerings in addition to the regular menu for brunch.…

What is on the brunch menu now that the buffet is closed?

We are currently serving our regular menu, but we have a brunch menu on the side. It includes five entrees such as chicken and biscuits, stuffed French toast, and barbacoa eggs Benedict.

Do your outside areas have heaters?

    Yes!

Can I take happy hour appetizers to go?

Yes, you can. JA's is pretty easy to get along with. But, as casual and relaxed as the atmosphere is, why leave early?!

What are the happy hour drink specials like?

$1 off liquor---margaritas and such. The day we were their the guiness was half off. Their…

Drink orders came soon after. We ordered a fried oyster po boy (which came with fries) and a 2 Taceaux plate (which came with fries and a 2nd side. I chose fried okra.) We finished it off with an order of beignets. The po boy came with 8 nicely-sized (and, importantly, fresh) oysters and a large portion of seasoned shoestring fries. My 2 blackened shrimp tacos were very tasty. The fries tasted good, but weren't at all crispy. The okra tasted good but was lukewarm. The beignets tasted good but were the consistency of a donut rather than being light and airy. The menu is quite extensive, and we had a tough time choosing what to order. I saw a large bowl of gumbo at an adjacent table, and that almost made me choose gumbo for my entrée. The eating area has a kitchsy decor fitting of the food genre. Seating was comfortable and service was excellent. This was a great experience that made me want to return for dinner next time, maybe during happy hour so I can order one of their great appetizers. We will be back before very long.

I think Chicken…read moreFried Steak is an item that has kept the people of the Southern United States together regardless of interests, jobs, intelligence, and opinions. It is a unifying meal of blue-collared and white-collared people alike. It is a food that unifies the vast cultures of the south. There is no debate when there is a Chicken Fried Steak. Soul food and southern food are so severely important to people who were raised in the south because the overall feeling of those cuisines is that it feels like their Grandma is cooking dinner. Now if you look at my Yelp profile picture for a fraction of a second and maybe stereotype a little, you can accurately assume that my Grandma's cooking would fit in the latter and you would maybe wonder if my grandmother knows what seasoning is. If you have had her chili, you would say no. The famous Texan Cafe & Pie Shop in Hutto is a classic Southern diner that is always a perfect pick-me-up meal and is a truest staple of the area. When I first visited Hutto before moving I looked for places to try, and the abundant and sheer quantity of reviews for Texan Cafe made it clear that I had to try it. That was just over a year ago, and I still remember parking my car in the lot across the street and walking into the cozy diner with wood chairs and booths, red tablecloths, and so much decor on the walls it might be a museum, and I felt right about moving to Hutto. I was seated immediately and almost instantly ordered the Chicken Fried Steak smothered with white gravy, of course, with sides of Fried Okra and Mashed Potatoes. It was not long before the beautiful plate hit my table, and I destroyed everything on that plate. When I thought it was over, I was handed the dessert menu that was two full rows worth of pie and other options. I was mesmerized by the length of it and was overwhelmed by the options. I texted my parents to tell them and suddenly I was going back to San Antonio with slices on slices worth of pie for them to have. When my parents came up to help move me in, they wanted to go to the Texan. They were impressed with how great the meal was alongside the pies. Pies that they bought extra of to take back with them to San Antonio. When I started my job, the first meal they took us new hires to was the Texan. I tried their Blue Plate Special and found out that Chicken Fried Pork Chops exist and fell in love with that. When my brother came and visited meeting my parents and me in Hutto, we went to the Texan. We enjoyed their appetizers and everyone had to have a slice of pie. Options for everyone. When a friend came and visited, she took a solo trip to the Texan while I was at work then told me she took the best nap of her life after. My buddy and I decided to go randomly one day after work to try their Hot Pie with Brandy Sauce. That thing is a tank and is worth a visit to try alone. What a sweet creation. When my girlfriend visited me in Hutto, I took her to the Texan and she will randomly text me about how much she misses the pie. I try to get her a slice every time she comes and visits. It is her favorite thing. It is clear to see why it is a favorite to so many because everyone I have taken to the Texan has left a fan wanting to come back. I brought my grandparents home a full Blueberry pie from the Texan Cafe which my grandma told me "was the best I have even since I was a little girl. Not too sweet with a great crust. Just right. A blueberry pie is my favorite." I know this review is less of a review and more of a collection of vignettes of many stories built inside the walls of the Texan Cafe, but that is what is so beautiful about southern hospitality and southern diners. That is why there is so much decor about the extensive history of Texan Cafe and the culture of Hutto on the walls. I went back this afternoon for the first time in a short while, but I find myself continuously impressed by the quality of the food, the efficiency as a whole, and just how welcoming everyone is inside. Their pies are just truly next level. Today, I went for the Chicken Fried Pork Chop Blue Plate Special which is truly heaven sent, potato salad, fried okra, and a slice of their cherry pie. It is a meal you feel blessed to eat and a restaurant you love supporting because of it. Every pie I have had at the Texan is better than any other pie I have eaten. They could be a full time bakery and still be the monument of Hutto. It just happens they have food that warms your heart too. RIYL: Grandma's cooking if it was not dry

While placing the order, she mentioned there were plumbing issues and something was overflowing, which raised another concern about the cleanliness of the environment. She also seemed anxious and unprofessional during the interaction. We were told the food would take about 15 minutes, but it ended up being closer to 30-45 minutes. Unfortunately, the food did not meet our expectations, especially for the price. The oxtails, rice, greens, and macaroni and cheese were around $36. The okra looked like it had been refried, and the chicken wings tasted as though they were cooked in old grease. The greens had an unusual flavor, and the macaroni and cheese did not taste like traditional mac and cheese. The oxtails were messy but not tender. Based on the lack of professionalism, the long wait, and the overall quality of the food, I do not plan to return.
