Dontcha just love those tiny hole in the wall places that cry out as family owned purveyors of knock-your-socks-off delectable food? Today was exactly that kind of day. Yes, there IS a real Jack. And he has been doing this for 25 years. And to talk to him, you immediately know he has not lost his passion. Add to that various family members in and out, working hard, helping in the front and back. A really good feel, even though the air conditioning was non-existent but badly needed. This was our first visit. By the time we left, we felt like we had known him forever. Maybe in another life? Or maybe he's just a really richly giving soul. I watched him treat all his customers with equal respect and generosity. After surviving the obligatory clutching of the chest when we discovered he had no lamb today, we ordered.... ADANA KABOB (2) - beautifully seasoned then skewered ground beef. Yummy. The kabobs came with a large serving of pilaf, hummus, a roasted whole tomato, roasted pepper, and pita. Outstanding, moist and flavorful, the pilaf (and everything else) was quickly vacuumed, Mr. B loved it. Me too. LOADED MANAISH- warmed flat bread, topped with an herb blend (called zatar), black olives, olive oil, red onion, fresh mint, chopped tomato. Fabulous and refreshing. FALAFAL- different than Greek, this was a solid, fried patty of garbanzo/fava bean (?) rather than mostly parsley, with just the right amount of seasonings. Chewy in a wonderful way and made even better with his tahini sauce. My falafal platter was accompanied with sides: hummus, traditional red pickled turnip, a lettuce and tomato salad, pickled onions, and pita bread. Now, earlier I mentioned his generosity. As he observed our excitement over his food, he started bringing out freebies. First was a generous taste of Lamb Shawarma (aka doner meat) wrapped in flat bread with tomato, a spicy chili sauce, lettuce. Delicious. Then he insisted we try his hot tea. His tea is a blend of exotic black teas with a slight sweetness and mysterious fruity flavor. Maybe some rose water? He said, if we come back, he'll tell me what is in it, punctuating that with his mysterious Armenian smile. That went really well with the two slightly warm pieces of the cigar shaped baklava with almond filling he brought out. Buttery and not too sweet, yet another freebie. We loved it so much we broke down and bought four pieces to bring home, two made with almonds, two with walnuts. Regrettably they were out of the pistachio filling because they are quite expensive right now. He could tell by just looking at us, we are dessert kinda people. With little to no arm twisting, dessert was a hot cheesy KUNAFA. This is a mild white cheese coated with shredded fila dough, then pan fried in butter. Topped with a honey sauce and ground pistachio. Did I taste a light flavor of cardamom? Not sure, but let me tell you, I am giving this an absolutely excited must-try salute. Just to be on the safe side, after our great meal, we ordered two more meals to go, one for the boomerang son, and one for the daughter who lives a few blocks away and can detect food like a trained sniffer dog. BEEF KABOB (2)- great filet mignon meat, lightly marinated and CHICKEN KABOB (2) - chicken breast also delicately marinated. Jack tossed in a heap of more shawarma because he ran out of beef kabob. And the conclusion? This guy is a great cook. And this is a guy you would like to have as a friend. It doesn't get better. read more

This place has 3 tables inside and 2 outside. It's pretty small, and has a menu up above with the items they make, except for desserts and breads. Tried the soujuk, which was a bread with soujuk (beef sausage), cheese, and egg for $7. It was really good, and the soujuk had a nice kick to it. Also tried the lahmajun (thin crust pizza with ground beef, herbs, and tomatoes) for $1.50. That was a really good deal and pretty tasty. Also had the spinach pastry for $2 which was just ok. For $1, I had the baklava for dessert. It was a unique experience and I got a chance to try the different items that they had. Didn't try the kabobs, but I'm sure they will be good. It's been such a long time since I've updated a review for Jack's. I've been coming here for a good 5+ years now and it's always our favorite spot to grab some Mediterranean food. We came here recently for a long awaited get together with Yelp old timers. There were about 14 of grubbing on all the delicious food prepared by us by Jack himself (and his wife). Apart from the hummus, babaghanoush (called mutabal here or something like that), we got to try a new dish of stewed eggplants served cold. We pretty much ordered a whole bunch of stuff and shared everything. The kufte (footballs) were a hit as usual and Jack makes them so well I believe they are the best in OC if not all of southern California. My favorite is always the Adana Kebabs which I order every single time I come here. These kebabs are seasoned so perfectly there is none I've tasted that comes close. My son's favorite is the Iskendar Kebab smothered in a yogurt sauce. I find this portion so generous I can only eat 1/3 in each sitting. The falafels are also cooked to order and absolutely the most delicious things you've ever tasted. Light and so crispy on the outside. The desserts are also great and Jack makes them all himself, fresh each day. The baklava is a huge hit with my son while I prefer the other one, coated with a crispy noodle like stuff like shredded wheat and stuffed with cheese and drizzled with a light sweet syrup. Whenever you come here, you will feel the hospitality of the Kelisian family. First of all... finding a non asian place out in garden grove is rare... finding an Armenian place is like finding willy wonka's golden ticket. I felt like i charlie and jack's bakery was the chocolate factory.. not being racist/bigoted or anything, but the name of the dishes are hard to pronounce so i'll just use numbers instead of the actual name. lol. i ended up getting the # 7 & # 8. and there were just awesome. (side note: the actual food does not look like the pictures). although, #8 could use a little more flavor... the bread surrounding the egg was great! parking is a bitch... but jack is nice and friendly. He said he has been here for over 20 years? i think.... if you own a restaurant and are still open for that long, you know you must be doing something right.... [catch up review] Originally hailing from the little hills of all things Asian (aka: Cerritos), I've heard of Armenian pizza.. but never had the pleasure of trying it. Happened to be in the area and saw the review for Jack's Bakery. Stopped in for some quick road snacks on our trip back to San Diego. First, the owner. He is as the reviews describe: a gruff bear man with a big heart. He and his wife were super friendly. Even with the clientele that trickled in - hormone raging high school kids - he was kind and even mannered to everyone that entered the humble premises. We were in a rush so I ordered a few items that seemed to be popular in the reviews: the Armenian pizza, another meat pie like item (can't remember the name) and baklava. I have to first rave about the baklava. It was house made and seriously THE. BEST. THING. EVER. I am not huge fan of baklava since it's usually too sweet, sticky and messy. Their version has the gentle flavor of honey that sings through the delicate crunch of the phyllo dough. The baklava has a perfect ratio of flaky dough, honey and nuts.. it was fantastic. Jack was so nice too!! He offered me a sample - which hooked me in to buy a whole container full and he even threw in some extra since I was still licking my fingers from the sample he gave me. Delicious. I would drive up from San Diego for his baklava. The Armenian pizza... is definitely a good snack. It wasn't as amazing as I imagined it to be.. only because I needed a bit more spice to the meat. It was tasty though.. Same comment to the meat pie thing. We ordered the "spicy" version.. but it was not spicy at all. I think a few peppers and a little more seasoning in the dough.. it's be a fantastic dish. I'm guessing that it's made in accordance to culture and tradition.. so it's just the kimchi eating fire breather in me that was seeking more. Overall, it is a fabulous business that I would support whole heartedly. I appreciate seeing a family hard at work, putting their love and dedication into their culinary art. It may not be the best thing in the world but it's the only Jack's Bakery- and that alone sets it apart. I highly recommend coming by the business to try the baklava (it is mind blowing).. and definitely giving your support to local businesses like this cute little place. 3.75 stars Jack is a very nice man and you can see the passion he has for his bakery. My friend and I had ordered several types of Baklava and the kuftas which is a fried cracked wheat meatball. The Baklavas were very good and I would say, the round one is my favorite out of the 3 different kinds we tried. There is no menu present yet but Jack said he is working on a picture menu and will have prices, pictures, and a full menu up soon. The kuftas I would have to say, I have had better and found them to be lacking in spices. The ones I had at Open Sesame in Long Beach and at San Jose's amazing Falafel Drive In are the best. I wanted to support Armenian & found this place not too far from my house. Jack was incredibly kind & welcoming. I had no clue what to order so I went off his recommendation & got the Adana/Chicken kebab combo. I also ordered an Armenian coffee, which he proposed I had in-house while I waited so he could serve it in a neat traditional cup. I tacked on a Spicy Cheese Boreg last minute as well. The whole meal was soooo good. The meat was incredibly tasty & tender, & their hummus is the best I've had in a while. I never tried Armenian coffee before so the graininess initially caught me off guard(not in a bad way), but it tasted really good & was really really strong. When Jack asked me how it was, I let him know & he laughed & said, "I call it wake-up juice" xD It was my first time having Boreg too, & I can't stop munching on it as I study. This bakery is more about the savory menu items. We ordered the kufte @$1.50 which were egg-shaped wheat shells stuffed with seasoned minced beef and served with a wedge of lime. Sam says they were the best she's had. My shawarma wrap $6 came with picked radish and was ordered spicy. The heat and yogurt sauce blended well with the meat. It was a bit to salty for my liking but it was good. We both couldn't eaten more as the menu has done great stuff. This is a family-run business who have been here over 20 years. I was a little skeptic upon entering this bakery. It's tucked away in the corner of a small, empty plaza. It's a very small bakery with not much to it. I never see many people there or many people dining in. There are three tables inside, though, if you do choose to have a meal there. The owner himself is always working. At first, he may seem a little difficult to approach, but he's actually really nice and seems to pride himself in his food. He is the kind of chef, though, where his food was prepared a certain way and he doesn't seem too enthusiastic when you start customizing your order or asking for extras of things. The food here, though, is fantastic! Everything tastes super fresh and absolutely authentic. These are the kind of flavors you don't get just anywhere. I had ordered the shish kebab plate and the chicken pita wrap, both highly recommend. The plate came with like an onion salad tossed in lime, hand charred vegetables, two pitas and hummus, and rice. The pilaf rice had to be my favorite. The chicken pita wrap came stuffed with pickled veggies and like a garlic sauce, super flavorful. Everything was great. Things to note: Everything here is made fresh to order meaning it will be a wait. My order took about 25 minutes to come out. They do charge $1 for credit card use. They close quite early with the kitchen closing earlier than the bakery. Prices have gone up about $1 so don't trust the menus posted on Yelp. The portion sizing is on the smaller size especially for the price of the meal which is why I gave this place 4 stars, but you pay for a great tasting meal. read more

This place is going to be a staple for my family for years. On a mission to find some lahmajun for a family gathering, this popped up as the obvious answer. Living in Long Beach, the drive wasn't too challenging, and we made it to the bakery quickly. The bakery is located in a small shopping center and the parking is kind of tight, but don't let that be too much of a turn-off, because there's amazing things inside. We had a hefty order (a dozen lahmajun, half a dozen spinach boreg), so we decided to order some lunch while we were there too (might as well, right?). My son was quick to order "I want #1!!" (cheese manaish), and my fiancé and I got a falafel sandwich and a shawarma sandwich, spicy. The falafel was perfect, and the shawarma was rich and soooo good. We gobbled everything up. So, I'm not from the middle east and so I don't really know much about the food but when I asked the person behind the counter questions about it, he wasn't helpful. Then, since my wife is from Turkey, she commented if the group sitting outside was talking Turkish and he just ignored my wife repeatedly. She was merely trying to be polite and make conversation.
