I've hired several very capable, top-notch contractors, and when I've asked them where they bought their tools, they always said, "Jackson's". So the first time my wife and I walked in the door, we both fell in love. One of our favorite pastimes is to go in there and drool over the power tools, and when I've needed a new pickup bed cover, a crank assembly for a weird old window, an unusual router bit, or a manual winch to pull up hunks of half-buried concrete, I always know I can find it there and not have to drive all over town looking for it. If you want cheap crap you'll use once and throw away, and you're satisfied with it doing a half-assed job or being hard to use - and I'm not saying that's bad, sometimes that's good enough - go to Home Depot. If you want professional quality tools that will last forever, and you're willing to pay a professional price, go to Jackson's. I have usually found their staff very helpful and knowledgeable, if occasionally distracted when there are a lot of people in the store. It does help to know what you're talking about. Also, they're oriented toward professional contractors - in fact, they hire professionals as salespeople, which is why they know what they're talking about. Such people often have a rough variety of humor. So please understand that most of their customers would find a "gentleman... making rude tongue gestures" when asked for "tung oil" to be a symbol of sprightly and jocose camaraderie and would typically respond in kind. If you find that offensive, this is probably not the place to shop. I took off a star because it is, indeed, sometimes a bit hard to get help, and the folks in the plumbing department can be a little gruff. But the go-to guy in plumbing is the tall fellow from New Zealand - helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. One thing I'd like to do sometime - but never have done - is attend some of the seminars-cum-sales sessions from the power tools companies. They put up tents outside and give demos and run a sale. We've been going to Jackson's for all of our home repair, remodel and hardware needs for many years and have always, always been extremely pleased with the service, selection, quality and prices there. Even when I go in looking for a five cent nail, someone will walk me right over to exactly what I need, answer all of my questions and make helpful suggestions. They are real handymen and women and know what they're talking about. We bought our bathroom sink there but couldn't pay for it for several months after it arrived and they were so patient and understanding and kept it in storage for us until we could pay for it. We bought a shower head but didn't actually install it for several years after we bought it (see a theme here?). Once installed, there was a tiny crack in one of the washers or something so I sheepishly went back to see what could be done. There I was, with no receipt, a defective product that had been used a couple of times and a ripped open package and they gladly let me exchange it for another one. (New one works perfectly, BTW) There is absolutely no comparing them to any of the huge, impersonal shoddy corporate hardware stores around now. You can't put a price on the service that they provide. And, if money is still an issue (as it is for this teacher and her grad school husband with two kids), they have great sales and promotions. I came here in Jan 2013 as I was running out of town and had to make some quick decisions on a bath remodel before I left .... this place is like Hardware Heaven. I was helped by John and then several other people when I let him go as I was just thinking about the many many options he showed me on a number of items. The virtual plethora and variety is astounding ..... they are definitely not the bargain store, but to retain such knowledgeable, HAPPY, genuinely kind people that seemed like a cohesive team, I'll keep coming here from Oakland ANY time I want quality advice and a clear understanding of my options. I literally had to tell John he could go help other people because he was completely willing to be at my side until I was finished making all my decisions. He opened book upon book of manufacture's catalogues going into all the pertinent details of what I wanted and comparing items. Yes, I could have gone to Amazon or another online supply place for cheaper price but the service is unparalleled and that's what you pay for. As someone who has done many a primal scream in a Home Depot (parking lot) and literally been fearful of a few of the workers there ..... I have nothing but the highest praise for the excellent service and amazing variety of Jackson's. It is unfortunate they are closed on Sundays and closed at 6p weekdays, making it a little hard for non-contractors to patronize their store, but it's worth fitting it into your schedule. read more

The staff here is very knowledgeable, although a few of them have the "I work at an independent hardware store, so I'm a manly badass" thing, which gets old fast. I went to one of the big sales with the power tool tents outside, and one of the employees refused to give me his opinion on the best drill to buy. We were out of earshot of the company sales reps, and what the hell do I know about power drill brands? The prices here are pretty high, so I usually come here if I need a person to help me with hardware questions. But hey, they are a locally owned business, and Home Creepo is pretty awful, so overall it's not a bad way to go. read more

I recently purchased an air compressor from another hardware store in San Rafael, and when I set it up, it appeared to not work. I called the manufacturer and they suggested I exchange it for a new one at the store where I purchased it. But I was leaving on vacation the next day, so asked my friend to make the exchange. He always goes to Jackson's, and went there thinking that is where I had purchased it. The staff person took the time to fix the set up problem I had missed, got it working, and charged us nothing-that is excellent service. read more

During the process of check out with Bill he kept getting phone calls for the front end, he asked them to please put them through to voicemail so he could finish writing up by purchase. I'm a huge fan of Jackson's. I get my workboots there and many of my hand and power tools and above all the thing I have to say is that they have a deep appreciation for their customers. They just have a culture of being attentive and helping (and being knowledgable in order to help better) - which sound like a basic requirements, but come on, we all know these are rare. I often have the experience of having their staff find me (before I find them!) and offer to help me multiple times per visit. I need an obscure router bit? They break out the catalogues and help order it. At other places they just shrug. Hand tools and power tools galore. The real tool belts that don't fall apart (Occidental Leather dealer). The easy everyday stuff, the uncommon stuff, home and garden (grill, your patio, etc), specialty hardware, plumbing fixtures etc etc They really cover all the bases except for lumber and most building materials like roofing and bagged concrete and sheet goods. But wait... why would I buy from here instead of from the box store with cheaper prices? Because I believe in the value of good service and knowledgable staff and also the variety of tools is unbeatable. When I'm at the chain home stores and I need help, forget it. Need those Makita planer replacement blades? "a what? A planer?" -- they don't even know what it is half the time and when they do, they rarely know where it is in the store. As a carpenter they treat me well at Jackson's, but you truly do not have to be a contractor to get good service (unlike some places that are impatient and condescending with non-contractors). Jackson's is my go to place. Nearly all my tools purchased in the last 5 years are from Jacksons. Integrity and pride. Love that place. Keep it local and give it a try. read more

I recently had my 14 year old compressor repaired and was very happy with the way the repair dept at Jackson's handled the repair. I picked up the compressor after a call saying it was ready. Took it to a job and it was not repaired. I returned it to Jackson's and was treated very professionally, given an apology and a loaner until mine was fixed. Jackson's Hardware has the highest prices of any hardware store in the area and terrible return policies. If you buy a faulty product, they automatically push you onto the manufacturers representative and wipe their hands of it. The guy actually behaved like I was taking money out of his pocket by trying to return a twice used $200 drill that was faulty. Since it is an employee owned store, I didn't mind paying more for the same product offered elsewhere. I believed that I would have a better customer experience versus a box store with a part time work force that is neither knowledgable or helpful....that is not the case here. They don't care either. Just save the 10-15% markup and go buy elsewhere and receive the same level (very low) of service. Also included in the one star is the inability to find anyone to help you and the attitude of some of the super- knowledgeable, hardware salesmen when you finally do find them. It's too bad really because I do prefer to support mom and pop places, but not at these costs. read more

I shopped this store yesterday for a router bit. From the moment I walked through the door until I left not 1 employee greeted me or asked me if I needed any help. I was blown away. I probably spent about 15 minutes in the store standing at the router bit display windows trying to decide which profile bit I wanted to buy. I don't go shopping, I go buying. I decided to go elsewhere. I went to Rafael Lumber. There a little better with service as after about ten minutes I finally had someone come on the aisle and asked me if I needed anything. After another 10 minutes I couldn't decide between 2 different profiles so I bought them both. I used to live in San Rafael and I would frequently stop by Jackson's a few times a month. Never had a bad experience but it was hit or miss. I live in Petaluma now and with traffic I don't venture into San Rafael unless I have no choice, once maybe twice a year. I have been in retail for the best part of 43 years and know quite well that consumers want to be pampered; want specialized treatment; they want to be helped. My job is customer service, I just happen sell things. I hope the next visit will be different. read more

Like those that have provided review here so far, I was impressed with Jackson's store. It is big with lots to choose from. That said, I will NEVER EVER GO BACK. I found their rental department to be sarcastic with me, rude to me and racist to boot. When I spoke with the manager about the situation I was met with further attitude. This time the attitude was not rude, just an "I don't really care" attitude. I agree that Home Depot may be a huge chain, but by no means is Jackson the "friendly neighborhood hardware store" that it purports to be. Go elsewhere or be prepared to act like a nasty contractor (not all of them are by the way) and by all means don't be Hispanic! read more

I love supporting the little guys and staying out of big box stores. I love that this company at least says they are 100% employee owned - that's rare these days. Of especial repute is their rental department. Jackson's will rent almost any type of tool they sell so that the customer can be sure it's what he/she needs to get the job done. I am so disappointed with the service that I got at Jackson Hardware!!!! I was willing to spend the extra money at this store because I thought I would get special service that would account for the extra money spent. After the bill for over $10,000 was paid by credit card, the whole thing started to fall apart. The toilets that I bought didn't have the insides, The products I ordered that were only suppose to take 8weeks Max are still not in, 3 of the pieces I bought were broken, Some of the hardware was in brushed nickel and some was in chrome. the shower door I bought did not have the towel bar that I thought was included. When I brought that to their attention, they insisted that it was my fault because "I didn't ask for it"!!! I was just hoping since I was spending so much money, they would help me make some of these choices like having the same finish on my hardware and making sure that the toilets had the guts included. Did they think I was plantnig flowers in the toilet? To make things even worse, they are not even returning my phone calls at this point. I will never shop there again and I will be sure to tell all of my friends what a horrible experience this has been for me. I could have saved thousands of dollars by shopping somewhere else. read more
