So, as with many household repairs, this shower head/hose was not fixed in one trip to the store. Turns out I was missing a little O ring. I headed back up to Jackson's and fortunately had Bob helping me again. He took the time to locate a generic O ring in stock (didn't fit quite right), look in the Grohe parts manual, search Grohe website, and talk to Grohe customer service. He came up with a solution that went above and beyond in my opinion. Instead of ordering the missing O ring (and the missing little filter) from Grohe, he took the entire piece that attaches the head to the hose that he took from a new shower head. He ordered a new one to replace into that box, and I got the piece I needed right away and without paying shipping. I'm starting to really appreciate this employee-owned business! read more

I just got back from this fine establishment with a big smile! I had a Honda EU3000 generator serviced elsewhere, a lot of major work, and the thing would not start properly. The guys at Jackson took a quick look and saw the choke was not engaging properly on the inside (although seemed to be working from the outside). They unstuck it and it started fine. The reason for five stars is (i) they helped me immediately, even taking the 150 lb. unit off my van with a forklift, (ii) they took time to see if it was a quick fix, and (iii) they charged me nothing and even refused a tip. I was in and out in 5 min. That is quality service. I'll be bringing more of my hardware-related buisness to Jackson. read more

I have a Stihl weed wacker that needed a little mechanical love, so I decided to take it to Jackson's as they are my local Stihl dealer. My weed wacker has always been tough to start and had something broken in the throttle that nobody could seem to fix without replacing the entire assembly. So to cut to the chase, I get this thing back and it starts on the second pull, plus the throttle was somehow fixed! Amazing! I have put over 10 hours on this thing since getting it back and I remain highly impressed. Not only did they go above and beyond with the service, they charged me at the original quote. No idea how they fixed my throttle, but I was not even charged for it. I realize that Jackson's may not always be the cheapest, but it certainly is a great value. And I can say in all honesty, that my weed wacker has never run better. One strange quirk is that the store is closed on Sundays. Why on earth a hardware store would be closed on a Sunday is a complete mystery to me. This is one of two days I normally have to work on my projects, so I have no other choice to but to take my business elsewhere and give someone else a shot at earning my loyalty. read more

I have been a loyal customer at Jackson Hardware for years. I have generally liked shopping there, until yesterday when I went there to rent a tool. I rarely leave reviews. I am leaving this only because I like Jackson's and hope this helps them get back to their old (and apparently forgotten) customer-oriented practices. The salesperson at the tool rental counter was very rude and unhelpful. He appeared to be annoyed that a customer had shown up to do business from the start of our interaction. After, it became clear that I was getting nowhere with this gentleman, I asked to see the manager. He directed me to a guy who was at the other end of the counter. When I approached him, before hearing what I had to say, the "manager" abruptly interrupted me to say he was going to lunch and passed me on to another clerk who was unable to help. I walked out of the store very disappointed and will probably try other alternatives as my first choice next time. read more

It is a shame that Jackson's is managed the way it is. There are so many things I would buy there. I just went in for patio furniture and to return a few items from my house remodel. I fundamentally want to support independent hometown businesses. Yet consistently I forget that they are so non-customer oriented when it comes to returns. Zero consideration of store credit. And if you special order something? Beware the restocking fee that they don't tell you about if it doesn't fit or match what you're building. It is 100% my fault that I keep forgetting this. I just tried to return extra pieces of their premium house brand hardware and a light fixture. Nope. They're happier to see it go in the dump and avoid the possibility of a happy customer that would come in and buy more with the store credit. We can all leave the house and go about business as usual now - my business will not be taken there. read more

Came here to look at a new kitchen sink and faucet, and while we were at it, decided to look at paint and the painting supplies too. Kirth in the paint department was very knowledgeable, friendly, efficient, and had excellent customer service. It was an extremely busy day and he took his time to explain things, and show us different products, and even some products that were not in his department. It is people like Kirth who will keep me shopping "local" vs. a big box store. read more

Have lost me as a customer. Very poor customer relations. We had a return on a defective product that was refused because there was no original packaging . I explained the rigid bubble packaging had to be cut and was destroyed in the opening of the product. Refused to refund stating only in a robotic and utterly inhuman way that original packaging had to accompany all returns. He was the manager. The price of defective product? $22. For $22 they lose a customer! My advice shop elsewhere. Many good hardware stores with good customer service and friendlier staff. They're all grumpy here and act like they hate their job. My experience at Jackson's has been hit and miss. I've been a customer there since I first moved to Marin in 2005. The best experiences have been when I found what I needed at a reasonable price and the staff was helpful. I'd say this is my experience about 75% of the time. About a quarter of the time it doesn't turn out so well....either they have what I need and the price is outrageous, or the staff is rude or dismissive. When this happens, I leave and know that chances are it will be better next time. Overall, I appreciate having Jackson's in the neighborhood and feel they offer products and attention that big box stores don't offer. Big drawback, though, that they aren't open on Sundays because that is a big DIY day for me around the house. read more

Returned 48hrs. later to purchase clearance(no returns) items I wanted to verify before deciding on a final sale. The clearance items had been placed on a cart and I asked an employee if they were still 50%off and he stated that he did not see why they could/would not be. After spending 40mins looking for my items and verifying that all components were in box, I went to the register and was greeted and helped by the same gentleman that checked me out 48hrs. prior. I asked him about the 50%off and he called the manager and the manager said NO. I could not understand how clearance items went up in price, so I requested to speak with the manger and he came over and said he would honor the price but to not expect it again. I stated to him that I had no idea that the clearance price would be increased within 48hrs and there was no notation listed that the sale would be ending. He went on to say that that is the reason he was allowing the discount and went on to say "don't expect this again," which I thought was an unnecessary comment. The employee that the manager left to adjust the price, did so incorrectly and I simply pointed out what the price should be and he remarked that "if you are making a big deal over a couple of bucks, then don't buy them," and commented that the manager did not have to allow the 50%off that they stated ended the day before and now all clearance items were set to be sent off from the store (with no sales made from them). I was appalled by how this employee responded to a customer verifying the price of items and his rudeness towards me. I've always had a great and helpful experience with the employees of this establishment. Perhaps the managers should take some training/tips from their employees on how to ensure a healthy and successful work environment for customers and the employees who take the right steps to assist them. I left the store without purchasing the items. The price was great, however, I could not spend my dollars their after being treated so badly. I see that this is an employee-owned business and I hope the few bad apples don't spoil it for the majority of those that are great. read more

If you're looking for tools, and you want some good advice, this is probably the place to go.... BUT.... seriously, there's some attitude roaming the shelves here. And trust me, there's no chance you're getting a good price on anything in the store... I could generally find better prices on Amazon using my phone as I wandered around. And there are probably better reviews on Amazon too, so caveat emptor on some of the somewhat parochial advice you'll receive here. Still.... As a contractor I have little time to waste. Jackson's has the most knowledgeable staff that I have seen at any hardware store anywhere. If they don't have it they will send me to someone who has it or order it for me. They have shown me solutions that I did not know were available. I am in and out in minutes and I don't have to come back because I was sold me the wrong part. I purchased a cordless drill that every one of my employees says is the best they have ever used. I have used it for three years now and it is still the best one we have. I think we paid $89.00 for it. Great price. Shop local. There are fewer and fewer places that offer you service and know what they are doing. Soon there will only be places that say I don't know I work in electrical. Jackson's Hardware is the kind of Hardware store that your dad took you into as a kid. Don't drive yourself crazy. Shop where I do and get the done faster and more efficiently. Pretty cool mom and pop establishment. I went there looking for new brushed nickel shower handles. They didn't have anything in stock but they service rep was very helpful made some phone calls and was able to find some and even gave me a quote. The service is helpful and knowledgable not like the the big box stores and the products they have are all very good. I looked at the new shower faucet assembly and they had some pretty high end stuff which I had not seen anywhere else! I would definetly recommend going here and supporting local buisness! read more

So, this past month we spent about 500 dollars at this place. One of the things we bought was a electric strike plate for an outside gate. They had 2 and we told them we weren't sure it would work. They said we could return it if it didn't fit. It didn't fit. We tried to return it. They said the two little wires were twisted and the box was busted up. The box came that way! the wires were twisted because we had to see if it worked. It didn't. We showed them the bill that we just 500 bucks and this 90+ dollar thing was being returned because they said we could. We said we'd take store credit. The Manager said the box was messed up and the wires were twisted, it was used. No way could they take it back. I will never ever shop here again for the rest of my life. I have only 3 words: SHOP HOME DEPOT. read more

I bought a $550 "Jet" table saw last spring. The gearbox on it failed 36 days after I bought it, so I took it back to see what could be done, or could I buy a new gearbox. They said they only guarantee for 30 days, and that "Jet" probably wouldn't do anything either, since I'd disassembled it to find the problem. The tool department told me they would probably call Jet about it and get right back to me, but when he took me over to the tool repair department they said all they would do was send it back to Jet, who might reply in three to six weeks. He was by NO means polite about it. It's been four months without a word. I called and was told the relevant party would call me back after lunch yesterday. Nothing yet. I've always found Jackson's prices to be high and staff utterly unpredictable. Sometimes they're helpful, sometimes they make you feel you're trespassing in their store. I suppose if they know you personally they're better, but for the rest of us: try the other stores first! read more

Go to Home Depot ask a question (any question) then go to Jackson's Hardware ask the same question you'll see light years of difference. Not only will the folks at Jackson actually take you to where you need to go...they'll ask you if you have the ancillary parts, equipment and anything else related to your project. I could spend an entire weekend roaming around Jackson's. Caution, if you do have to return something (you measured it wrong or you thought you needed the wrong part) DO make sure you keep your receipt. Jackson's is not as free wheeling about returns as Home Depot is. After all it is 100% employee owned. One other fantastic thing...if you rent something Saturday morning and return it 8:00 AM Monday you only get charged one days rent 'cause they're closed on SUNDAYS! Have fun. read more

I've been trading at Jackson's for 30 years and have always gotten top notch service. Recently , as an example, I as looking for some obscure large ducting clamps and couldn't find them..a couple of employees tried to help but were unsuccessful...at the counter , as he was about to check me out, employee Kirth said, " let me go look somewhere else", he came back minutes later with the clamps, which he said were partly hidden on a top shelf. This is service that excels, and I've noticed that , although Jackson's caters to professional tradespeople, the employees are as helpful and courteous to the laypeople who may not even know the proper names of the items they need. People who experience this level of service will be very reluctant to get lost in a big box store, even if they might save a couple bucks. We spent a delightful half hour with Michael O'Sullivan looking for fixtures for our old bathroom that is to be remodeled. Michael's knowledge of the products, his ability to understand the styles we were looking at made the experience a real pleasure. We left with pamphlets, brochures, model numbers, colors, information that we can now just hand over to our contractor. All done in just 30 minutes, we left with a smile on our faces and a sense of dealing with a very straight set of guys. read more

The store is fine, but the staff are condescending and full of themselves, especially to those of us who aren't contractors. They carry quality tools. but are lacking in variety. I grew up loving hardware stores, and If I could find a friendly staff member with a little patience I'd shop there all of the time. But I can find rude employees at the big box stores... They pretty much have everything - light fixtures, sinks, tools, power tool rental, hardware, paint, glue (which is what I came in for), work clothes/boots, plumbing supplies, etc. I was in today for the first time and everything - EVERYTHING - was 15% off. Pretty rad for an employee owned business in a bad economy. The customer service was tops too, though there's no one just wandering around looking to help you, so do yourself a favor and just go up to the counter and ask. I've hired several very capable, top-notch contractors, and when I've asked them where they bought their tools, they always said, "Jackson's". So the first time my wife and I walked in the door, we both fell in love. One of our favorite pastimes is to go in there and drool over the power tools, and when I've needed a new pickup bed cover, a crank assembly for a weird old window, an unusual router bit, or a manual winch to pull up hunks of half-buried concrete, I always know I can find it there and not have to drive all over town looking for it. If you want cheap crap you'll use once and throw away, and you're satisfied with it doing a half-assed job or being hard to use - and I'm not saying that's bad, sometimes that's good enough - go to Home Depot. If you want professional quality tools that will last forever, and you're willing to pay a professional price, go to Jackson's. I have usually found their staff very helpful and knowledgeable, if occasionally distracted when there are a lot of people in the store. It does help to know what you're talking about. Also, they're oriented toward professional contractors - in fact, they hire professionals as salespeople, which is why they know what they're talking about. Such people often have a rough variety of humor. So please understand that most of their customers would find a "gentleman... making rude tongue gestures" when asked for "tung oil" to be a symbol of sprightly and jocose camaraderie and would typically respond in kind. If you find that offensive, this is probably not the place to shop. I took off a star because it is, indeed, sometimes a bit hard to get help, and the folks in the plumbing department can be a little gruff. But the go-to guy in plumbing is the tall fellow from New Zealand - helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. One thing I'd like to do sometime - but never have done - is attend some of the seminars-cum-sales sessions from the power tools companies. They put up tents outside and give demos and run a sale. If you're a tool geek, that would be pretty cool. read more
