Went for our first time. Friendly waitress and good food. Hubby had a delicious pizza and I had a salad with chicken wings.

Great people make this a good place to chill out. The food is normal American bar food but what keeps me coming back is that the bartenders and servers are ultra cool. Horrible customer service! I complained of a white powdery substance that I noticed floating over the top of my cocktail. The waitress reacted negatively and rude. She claimed it was salt that somehow got into my drink from the bar. It was obviously a powder and not a salt as salt has a crystallized form. That was not the case. It was VERY obvious it was a white powder. She said, "Do you want me to taste it?" I said yes, go ahead, and she did. She swore it was salt and brought an entire tub of salt to our table to show me what salt looked like as if I never seen salt before. Then she continued on with telling me that I shouldn't act "this way towards them cause they are human." Then, she kicked us out for a look I gave her towards the end of the conversation. My friend that was with me that night called the next day to speak to the manager. That individual didn't say much, and we got nowhere with the incident. I returned last week not thinking much about it. We sat at the bar and enjoyed a nice dinner. We tipped the waitress and was on our way out when the waitress stated " Do you remember me?" I honestly didn't remember at first, but then I remembered the red long hair. It was the same waitress from the night I found a white substance floating on the top of my rum and coke. She was once again rude and told me my info was posted in the back because I was never again allowed back. I didn't say anything to her and walked away. I want to warn people. Check your drinks and be cautious. The reaction from the waitress was very offensive and disrespectful. She was obviously guilty and tried turning the tables to make me look wrong. THIS WAS A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE! I COULD HAVE BEEN DRUGGED OR POSIONED. I SHOULD HAVE CALLED THE COPS BUT THE WAITRESS TOOK AWAY BEVERAGE AS SOON AS I COMPLAINED SO I COULDN'T PROVIDE PROOF EVEN IF I DID CALL 911. THIS WAITRESS CONTINUED TO HARRASS ME ABOUT THE INCIDENT IN FRONT OF EVERYONE AT THE BAR DURING THE SECOND VISIT. Great service, i think Brooke was my server's name. She was super nice and checked in on my table frequently. I ordered a coffee and the Cekola Family's signature pizza, both of which were delicious. This was very good.BUT there are a lot of people with diabetes. Why would a chef put sugar in gravy or/and mash potatoes? I don't think they were Japanese potatoes. The bread looked yummy but was probably heated in a microwave. It could have been super! The meatloaf and baked potato was super! And vegetables (green beans and broccoli florets) were great. Why sugar in the gravy ? The mash potatoes were great! Did somebody get the sugar used instead of salt. We'll go back! Service was great for take out! read more

Jac's is a staple in Kalamazoo. The Cekola family is a prominent and well respected family. However, this location continues to be inconsistent with their customer service. We recently visited the 9th St location with some older children (13 & 12). We wanted to sit on the bar side with our family to watch the golf that was on. It was not busy and there was plenty of room. We've sat on the bar side many times with our kids and families. However, we were told this time that we couldn't sit there because we had children with us. The hostess was rude. They are generally pretty terrible with families that have children. We love their food, however, we won't be back to this location until there is consistency around this. read more

She knows that my boyfriend always orders a captain and water with cherries and consistently tells me the drink specials. She is the sweetest thing in the world! 12/10 service ALWAYS. This location consistently has awful customer service. I ordered curbside for 4pm (before the dinner rush)... arrived on time, followed the directions and called the store to let them know I had arrived. The gal on the phone was pleasant and said they'd be right out. 4:15 rolled around, I called again and they said they'd be right out. I understand restaurants are short staffed and I offered to come in and pick up the order - the gal assured me someone would be right out. 4:30 and still nothing - so I go inside to pick up the order and the bartender was extremely rude, short and pissed off I had come in to get the order. On top of that - the two pizza's were COLD. The quality of their food has gone down over the last year. This was the last time I'll order from that location. Their pizza is too expensive to be treated like that. I was very disappointed as a loyal customer to Jac's. read more

This place is absolutely TERRIBLE. it took 20 min just to get a drink and then later on i had ordered a water and didn't receive the water for probably 30 minutes. the service was slow and they weren't even busy at the time i had came in. i've heard multiple bad things about this place but decide id give it a try anyway, NOPE. everyone was right about it being terrible. the staff had such bland attitudes and wasn't very welcoming at all. i wouldn't recommend this place to anybody. read more

Pizza was very greasy and salty. Service was good and patio seemed clean. They had a big selection of craft beer.

We called at 4 PM and were told there were several spots available for outdoor dining. We took the 7 PM spot and when we were arrived, we were lead through the restaurant outside to a tent. We noticed three separate large groups sitting in the tent and saw that while they were speaking, you could see their breath. Of the eight or nine heaters, only two were on. The very large heaters on the edge of the tent were turned off. When our waitress arrived, we nicely questioned the heaters and she told us they had run out of propane the night before. She said their supplier ran out and they were unable to get any propane. ( My husband wondered why they didn't just run to the gas station down the street and get a few tanks). Our waitress was wearing a winter coat with the hood up, a scarf and mittens. She said normally she can wear a long-sleeved T-shirt in the tent and is very comfortable. She said all the waitresses and waiters had to bundle up and were told to act like "nothing was wrong." We decided then to place our order "to go" and we tipped her very well and then left. It wasn't her fault. We understand the difficult situations Covid presents for restaurants, but feel like we should've been notified when we made the reservation that the restaurant had run out of propane. It was 29° out. The food was OK. The pizza was great as usual, but the spaghetti and meatballs had lots and lots of noodles with hardly any sauce. The meatballs were fantastic though. We understand restaurants not wanting to lose business right now , but it's important to be honest with your customers and let them know if you have no heat!! Also, It would've been nice to have the Christmas lights that were wrapped around the railings and on the Christmas tree near us, turned on. All in all the patio atmosphere was like sitting in an unheated, unlit garage! read more

For pizza: strong 4 stars. For pasta and other entrees: 1 mostly undeserved star For service and execution: 2 or 3, depending. Call it 2.5. Pizza is quite good. I like a thin crust, and this is that. I will say that my pizza generally comes to the table over cooked, but not critically. I will stick with pizza in the future, because... Pasta and other main dishes: just don't. One note sauces, low quality ingredients, not a hint of seasoning. Ordered lasagna, it came to the table with a couple of partially-melted shreds of some kind of cheese. Everything else was a sloppy pool of red sauce which hadn't even a hint of any kind of Italian flavor: garlic, oregano, red pepper, all absent. Very acidic, no balance at all. And while my plate itself was hot enough to iron a shirt with, the lasagna was barely warm. I let the waitress know--no need to replace it or re-warm it, just let the line know that it went out cold. They discounted me $4, which I appreciated, took it home, added some seasoning, and am enjoying for lunch today. Any chicken dish is cooked to death, dry as the Gobi desert, and again without a hint of seasoning. Their house pasta was pretty good, once I removed the offending chicken. And was it ever offensive. My husband ate his steak with A-1 sauce. I have never seen him use A-1 before. The service: I've had worse. Servers are very young, mostly not very friendly, and lack confidence. Can't answer questions or give recommendations. Drinks sit empty sometimes. It's hard to attract good help when your food is mostly rewarmed or straight from the bag in the freezer to the fryer, so I can't hit them too hard for that. Recently received a "$25 off your next visit" after waiting nearly 90 minutes for takeout pizza (on a not-very-busy Thursday night). Appreciate it, but would rather just see more effort made. Cook better, more interesting food. This will only help you. read more

I'm looking forward to seeing how this place evolves. They're going to have tons of patio space in the summertime, and they have a nice size back room that's great for private events like the Dining Out For Life After Party we attended this week. The staff handled the large group well, and the pizza buffet was delish and the topping options had a nice balance between variety and the basics (and since it's all thin crust you can try a nice variety some the pieces are cut smaller). It was a drag that you could only use your $5 drink voucher at this event for a drink that was exactly $5 instead of paying the difference for something you'd really enjoy. Of the maybe 100 drink options on the menu -- including a nice cocktail list, wines, craft beers, and spirits -- only 5 things I spotted were exactly $5. I would highly recommend switching this policy up for future events. For one thing, it's much easier for guests to leave gratuities when they have a tab, and people will have a more pleasantly memorable experience when they have a drink they really want than one they're settling for. read more

Just had a fantastic pizza there last evening and as I'm eating leftovers today I KNEW I simply had to write a review! This Cekola's Special pizza is truly amazing ! Thin crispy crust and perfect topping combo! In fact I've only got a couple of fav pizza places and this gives me one more! One more point I'd love to make is that every time I've been there our group has had amazing service! That is a very important piece of info in these days of "oh well"! When our local Mangia's closed, we anxious awaited a new restaurant going in the building. Jac's has been busy since it opened, and we finally took a chance Saturday night. The interior has undergone an amazing transformation, great use of space, windows are bringing in needed light. The hostess was friendly, and despite a packed parking lot, we got a booth when we arrived. We get that the Michigan State game was on, but the customers in the area where we were seated (not in the bar) were some of the most obnoxious people w have ever encountered. All around us, people were yelling, screeching,and laughing as though it was a contest to see who could be the most raucous. My husband and I had to stop trying to talk to each other for a while, as quite a few of the patrons seemed to know each other, and were screaming and caterwauling at each other while they wandered past our table. The people in the booths on either side of this were part of this as well. As far as the food and drink: We had a craft beer menu, but not domestic, and the server didn't offer options except for Bud Light. No idea what else they have, if any. The wine list wasn't bad for this type of eatery. We ordered onion rings, because the online website said: Onion Rings.... $6.99 10 freshly sliced onions, breaded and deep fried ." Nope. Frozen. Bland. Average. The pizza was hot, greasy as can be, low quality sausage, good cheese, bland sauce. The Chicken Parmesan was quite good, though the meat was too thick. The penne pasta was soft, and, again, the sauce was bland. And you don't need to put three cups of pasta on a plate! Just arrange it nicely, yes, "plate it, for the millennials, instead of piling it. Also, no management was to be seen. Especially in a new restaurant, you expect that someone in charge would come around to check and see how it's going. The loud patrons should have been encouraged to tone it down a bit, in a nice way. The server who brought out our food, wandered with it every time, looking around and we had to wave our arms at her to get her attention. Why wasn't she trained to know where to take food? Overall, it was marginal. Very disappointed to drop $50 on such average food and service (slow, I forgot to mention). It will take a lot to get us back there again, and it's just down the street from us. read more

I arrived at this location @ 5:30 pm on the first of August. I am a man with a beard so as I talk it tugs at my mask. I was taken aback when talking to the Hostess's (3 of them standing shoulder to shoulder) the middle one interrupted me and said: "you need to fix your mask". I complied and began asking about the reservation again when she interrupted me again and said: "You need to move 6 feet back". If you have ever been to the location.. the width of the entrance is six feet. At this point I looked around on the ground for the tape. There is none, I looked at the counter for sanitizer there was none. And looked back at the 3 giggling hostesses standing shoulder to shoulder. I decided this was not how I want to experience my evening with my family. I walked out. I decided to call the manager to be fair and explained why I was not fulfilling my reservation. I spoke with the Manager Brian (I think.) After a short discussion I explained what happened and that I was wearing a mask and he accused me of not having a mask on and then told me it is OK for the girls to stand so close because they worked together. I then explained the Governors order required employees to distance as well as customers. He accused me of becoming irrational. Obviously he had more pressing things to do then speak with a customer. I told him that I would summarize this in a yelp review since he would not discuss it with me.. My family usually visits the Portage store and this would have been our first time at the Oshtemo location. I refuse to patronize restaurants that treat customers this way and additionally are so blatantly hypocritical. I could easily train these employees how to handle any situation like this respectfully and with grace but this is obviously not what management is doing. There is no tape on floor or barrier to guide customers, No distancing of employees, no hand sanitizer for customers and\or employees to use. Just management encouraging underage staff to be rude to customers. This was my first impression of Jac's on 9th street. I hope this review improves Jac's treatment of customers but I doubt It will An I am not sure if I will be visiting any of the locations ever again. I will spend my money at businesses that appreciate clientele and treat them respectfully. read more

The Italian beef is like cat food. The Italian beef meat is like a pot roast that has been boiled or sat in a crock pot for 24 hours. The burger is blah and dry. The fries were good and so was the service. Really nothing special, so so disappointed. read more

Food is ok. Wo go because it's close. The main issue here are the servers. Consistent hideous service is the norm here. I think they are actually trained to ignore piles of dirty dishes as the walk away empty handed right back to their cell phones or anywhere else besides the dish room with dirty dishes. Bad service is one thing. Bad service with snatchy attitude is just laughable. Ladies, you're serving at Jacs. Calm down and clear a plate now and then. Walking back to the kitchen with nothing in your hands just shows how ill prepared you are for a job in the service industry. You're pathetic and Monelli's is right across the street. Their drinks are better, their food is better, they leave their foul attitude at the door, and they are trained to NEVER leave a dining room empty handed. My wife and I both are fans of thin crust pizza. We were looking forward to trying Jac's pizza because there are few pizza restaurants that offer or specialize thin crust. The restaurant was fairly busy but we were surprised when it took about 45 minutes for our pizza to arrive at our table and it appeared more than a little overdone...we lifted a piece and it was pretty much black..an immediate disappointment...our server was a little defensive about its condition but did agree to have it redone. The replacement arrived in about 20 minutes and while dark brown on the crust, it was a definite improvement with no black. The crust turned out to be amazingly tough, you could not cut the crust with a fork, a knife was necessary. We ordered a "special" that had cheese, pepperoni, Italian sausage, green peppers and mushrooms. There did not seem to be sauce, but upon lifting the cheese a slight sauce residue was visible. We are older and in our long life we have eaten a lot of pizza. Both of us thought that this was probably one of the worst....ever. The crust while thin was very chewy. The sauce was not a factor...there was either too little of it or it lacked seasoning. There was a normal amount of pepperoni, but only about one piece of Italian sausage on some of the slices. I could go on, but my wife and I urge you to avoid the pizza. During our lengthy waiting time we observed a number of entrees go by that looked interesting. So while we will not return for pizza, we may return to check out other items on their fairly lengthy menu. Our server was friendly and handled the situation well. read more

Have always loved Jac's and was super excited for the 9th street location to open. Family loves the pizza and fries. The takeout game has been on-point during the pandemic. Food has been hot and fresh and if they are willing to bring it out to you so you don't have to go in. If you do, they have locally made hand sanitizers all over for your use.
