Service was crap and I'm from the US! That's saying something. They threw my change on the counter, charged separate for rice. No where in the world has that ever been a thing for me. Went tonight with my brother and we got the Peking Duck, a veggie dish and a veggie/meat dish. I speak Cantonese so the customer service was fine, in the sense that, I didn't feel like the server couldn't communicate with me or that they were being rude. The customer service was fine for a Chinese restaurant. The Peking Duck was the issue. Firstly, they didn't carve it in front of us and second, it looked like half the duck skin was missing - quite literally, they gave us half the duck's skin. Duck's are usually bigger than chicken so there should have been way more than what we had... it was haphazardly served on shrimp chips and the skins were cut in all sorts of weird sizes. Zero consistency. This tells me a couple things: one the Peking duck wasn't prepared in full for us, for this night, and two, it could have been left over from some other roasted duck. It definitely was off. I've had Peking duck many times and there's a lot of skin/meat in the first dish... not whatever was served to us tonight. I don't think I will go back. It was pretty brutal. This is, the worst, Chinese food I think I've ever eaten. I ponder if this place has gone the direction of wings where you wonder if they're a money laundering scheme until they close because if if they are doing something illegal the food is so trash they can't even keep their numbers up. What i received was a bowl of unseasoned dry noodles that may as well have just been dumped out of a mister noodles packet and chunks of whatever they could find around the place with the flavour of moist cardboard to mix in. I don't normally leave bad reviews but the fact that I paid money for this pisses me off! Seriously whoever was in the kitchen and decided this was acceptable shouldn't be trusted to cook a grilled cheese sandwich! Hell they should be named and shamed and permanently put on parole by our courts under the conditions that if they so much try to make scrambled eggs they get locked up because it's a safety hazard! I am no expert, but have had enough dimsum to find the reviews here somewhat misleading...many of them seem to be from people who either don't eat dimsum or don't know the nature of these estaurants. If you want take out, or are looking for polite table service and relaxed ambience, THIS IS NOT THE PLACE. Go to an actual Chinese-Canadian restaurant instead, where you order from a menu. It's dim sum: People scurry frantically around with bowls and bamboo steamers full of dumplings and other steamed and fried foods and you have about 10 seconds to either take or pass on each serving. It comes by at a fairly constant rate and you can eat as much or as little as you want. You can ask for less common stuff as well, and might have some success if you know your dimsum lingo. The staff mark what you take on a sheet of paper then charge you when you leave. It's pretty good considering how fast the turnaround on the tables is, and we didn't wait too long for Sunday brunch at the 12:45pm. It's not cheap, but probably works out to about $30-35 per person. In short, if you are expecting dimsum, you have a group of friends who like dimsum, and you want it with no frills and are willing to pay the above-mentioned price per person, this place is fine. Considering how expensive most things are in this town, it's a fair deal (maybe 20% high, but I'll bear it). There are dozens of places in Markham that make it look bad, but that's a long way away. There's nothing wrong with the staples: the shrimp and pork dumplings are good, as are the steamed spare ribs and squid. I also have the feeling that if you know a lot about dimsum, you can get a better variety and service. It's a fun place and I'd go back. read more

Stopped by in a group of four mid week around 1 pm. There was plenty of seating and we secured a booth. Lots of dim sum options but unfortunately the steamed items they brought forward on the trolley were not hot. We ordered the salt & pepper squid and it was served hot though was not a fan of the batter. I also found the portion size on the small side for the dim sum items. I used to come here before the pandemic. Very mediocre dim sum, but as far as I know, the only decent that Victoria has to offer. Recently I figured it was a good idea to try again, decided to call to see how busy it is. I'm told its not busy and maybe 5 mins wait. I arrive 5 mins later to find a lineup jammed up to the elevator. I walk to the front just to ask staff if I need to give a name. I get the expected blatantly ignored over and over as I just wanna ask that question. Eventually I have to politely shout towards someone just to get their attention and quickly ask the question. I get the half point towards the lineup while they are looking away and "lineup" mumbled. Oh yeah I forgot the service in the place totally sucks. Gave up after waiting 15 mins or so, with people weaseling ahead etc. And here I was "suggesting/recommending" this place to anyone who asked where to get dim sum. read more

My husband and I stayed at the Red Lion Inn next to the Jade Fountain, and we were thrilled to have such wonderful food available to us only steps away. The service was great, the vegetarian egg foo yung and chow mein were very tasty, and the ambiance was delightful. We were amazed by the cute little waiter robot that accompanied the waitress with our food. A good time was had by all. read more

A group of 8 of us went for Chinese New Year and we made a point of making aa reservation but that seemed to mean nothing. One group was in front of us and a bunch behInd us, but at least two big groups of people walked in aafterr us and got sseated. We waited At least 45 minutes. Today I ordered five dishes to go and when I went there to pick up, I found that fat old lady at the front desk giving me a very bad cold face when I paid. She looks like I owe her a lot of money. The food is good but I feel sick about that lady's attitude, and I'm warning everyone who doesn't want to see that bad attitude which will badly affect your appetite, not to go this place. read more

The Jade Fountain Restaurant gets very busy on weekends, and especially on weekends with a holiday. Do not expect to show up in 10 minutes and expect all your orders and seating to be taken care of. There may be a lineup just to get your table. It is a lot less busy if it is just an ordinary day with the usual worker staff lunch or dinner, from the surrounding government offices and businesses. Dim sum is very busy, but their standard non dim sum times are not as crowded. I like this restaurant because of the nicer decor and the slightly higher prices are worth it. read more

The food is better than average but the service is beyond hell! We found the attitude of the manager/hostess (owner?) to be downright hostile. Eating here is as pleasant as being in a war zone, beware of asking questions about the menu, you might as well step on a mine. Why someone like the hostess/cashier/manager is in the hospitality business is beyond comprehension, she is better suited working as a guard in a prison cafeteria. 4 stars for food, minus 5 for service. To get to this restaurant you would need to go through the hotel lobby and take the elevator down one floor. Once inside, it was a 45-minute wait for lunch on a weekday. There were only two of us and since they had mostly large tables, we got passed a couple of times in favor of parties with 5 or more. After the third time, I mentioned to the hostess that although there were only two of us, we would be ordering to-go food for the the rest of our family so technically, we would be purchasing food for 5 people. Still a flat "no". Well, we finally got sat and dim sum carts started coming our way. Dim Sum selection was very limited and portion size and flavor were mediocre at best. We asked for a dinner menu as the lunch menu did not offer very many choices. Service was pretty much non-existent in this restaurant (they forgot out request for hot tea refill and extra sauce). We ordered fried rice, salt and pepper shrimp, pork chop and some vegetables to-go. The food was probably one of the worst Chinese food I have ever had - tough, no flavor and the fried rice tasted like it was reheated from the night before. Our bill totaled $224 before tax so I think we ate for a party of 10! read more

Dim Sum lunch was excellent. Shrimp stuffed in mushrooms (appeared to be morels). Siumai. Shrimp and Scallop dumpling topped with masago. Had to ask for chili oil, but it was quick to arrive. Lady cashier would rather have been reading than finding me a to go box. But aside from that service was friendly. And it is obviously popular with folks who should know as when I came in I was the only caucasian and it was busy. I always consider that a good sign for food like this. We arrived late in Victoria island BC and I told my husband to find me a dimsum resto--- order the following and you'll enjoy the meal : bbq pork bun steamed, pork siu mai, pork spare ribs and I named it the shrimped tofu roll (comes with Mayo) and that's really good. Count how many dishes you have ordered before paying, watch! They will over charge you! We found three times that they charged more than 20% when paying the bill. They simply counted more number of dishes because most people didn't pay attention to it, you may always feel that how can you earn that many dishes! Once you get over the fact that this place is located on the lowest floor of the Red Lion Inn, you'll enjoy it. We came in for lunch and we quickly loaded up our table. This is not the cheapest dim sum, but our expectations in Victoria were not the highest. Prompt service and a good selection of items on the carts (with new items added every few minutes). We came on a Thursday so there was no wait and the restaurant was about 30% full. I can imagine weekends being pretty busy. read more

Comparing this to San Francisco and Seattle, this is a solid winner! Great food, properly prepared, delicious, and a good variety. We were only disappointed that they didn't have the baked port buns on our second visit, (only on weekends) but it was really first class. Properly hidden away entrance behind a liquor store in the basement of the Red Lion, I love this sort of find. Not a lot of English spoken, so if you don't speak Dim Sum, take a friend who does. Start off ordering the Steamed Chinese Broccoli and then take what looks good. Try something that looks strange, we found a kinda fried jellied thing with Asian Pears in it for desert. Ordered take-out last night through their website after seeing their flyer recently. The process was easy enough. However, when we went to pick up and pay the bill, they refused to honour their ad which promised 10% off for pick-up of $35 minimum. Our order was $47.32 before tax. They reasoned that they do not give discounts for combo orders, which is ridiculous! I have never encountered this kind of service before in any other restaurant. I am leaving 3 stars because the food was tasty and a decent amount. But I don't think I will be ordering from there again. read more

After our food was brought out we were never checked on once the whole time we were there about an hour or so until we asked for more water and the bill which we asked for from him. The manager I think it was kept yapping to another table instead of giving us our bill. They seemed to pay attention to the table with the Asian people more. The food was a bit greasy too. read more

This is one of the more memorable dim sum places I have been to in Victoria since I have visited here many times in the past. The place is kind of small compared to most chinese restaurants with not many large tables which is usually the standard since most come with large parties. The interior was fancy looking with the chinese lanterns and nice bright lighting with dark wood furnishings. When we arrived for lunch the place was totally packed and we had to wait a good 10 to 15 minutes before we got a table. The food came around quick with the ladies toting the dim sum carts even though the place was very busy. The dim sum itself was a little bland tasting, but wasn't bad by any means. What I noticed was that they didn't have any of the sauces you usually have on the table like soy or hot sauce. They also have free wifi which is provided by the Red Lion hotel right next door to the restaurant. read more

Overall: I wouldn't go back. Food: The food was fine. Some items were great, others not so much. The pork siu mai tasted like spam, but the deep fried prawns (they were shaped like fingers) were delicious with the sweet chili sauce. The shrimp dumplings were also good. Service: The service was less than expected. The maitre d/host/manager who seated us was less than friendly. Typically seen standing/pacing between the host station and the bar, he could have come around to see if everything was alright or AT LEAST smiled and said goodbye as we left. Service (cont.): So, our table didn't have any soy sauce on it. Thats fine. But getting the attention of someone was easier said than done. I finally got the attention of one of the staff and asked if they had any low sodium soy sauce. She looked at me a little weird and repeated back "soy sauce?". It's too bad - didn't speak English well enough to understand my request. Service (cont.): Something positive to be said was that the service was fast. The restaurant was full and there were constantly trollies coming by with food to choose from. Having said that, there wasn't a huge amount of selection. We saw the same trolly/tray go by several times. What left a bad taste in our mouth: Green tea was brought to our table when we sat down (something I've come to expect from Chinese/dim sum restaurants). However, I've never before seen in as a charge on the bill. It's not the $2.35 (or whatever it was that bothered me), it was the fact that it was brought to our table without our request and then it showed up on our bill. What's next? Yum Yum Yum, my hankering for Dim Sum was definitely satisfied by our visit to Jade Fountain. So why a three star review? SERVICE...they have a tremendous opportunity here, although, based on the volume of business, I don't imagine there's much need to do anything but maintain the status quo. This is one of those situations where one may be inclined to overlook certain service issues because the food is that good. As this was our first visit, we really weren't prepared to be discriminated against for not being Asian... the Host attempted to seat Asian patrons ahead of us twice, but other people stepped in on our behalf to stop him from doing so...and, we had to get our own water and track down carts that would have otherwise not come our way. Our efforts were rewarding by hot and wonderful food, but the overall experience was a little frustrating. Now that we know better, we will be able to affect our experience here the next time we go, as the food will indeed bring us back. So, Jade Fountain, you can do better, but we don't expect you will :) We do however Thank you for the great food, it was by far some of the best Dim Sum we've had. PJ xo read more

Decent food, moderate to high prices, but lacking in service. Went on a Saturday evening and the place was busy busy with only two front of house staff who did everything from seating patrons, answering calls, bussing tables (or not...) and tending to tables. Severely understaffed... We had to wave them down to ask for a doggie bag and the bill. We waited about 20 minutes to get take out containers that we had to box ourselves and get the bill... Which I ended up going to the counter to pay. For a place that charges $17 for a plate of leaves, I expected to get a bit attention. We order 3 family style dishes and received 2 of 3 within a reasonable time. By the time we received the last dish, we were all done with the first two. So frustrating when this happens and it ruined our meal. The only reason I would return is due to the lack of choices in Victoria but I would probably consider take out next time. read more

In all fairness, the food is fantastic; that is, presuming it ever shows up. I'm pretty sure Godot will show up before your order does. Also, check your order very carefully and if you end up speaking to a staff member on the phone, prepare to be shushed if not outright laughed at. The first couple of times we ordered, the food was lovely and arrived at our door hot. The Jade Fountain became our go-to for Chinese Takeout. We had a good relationship with the delivery guy and tipped well (service industry workers work hard, so we are unfailingly polite and always tip at least 20%). Then we noticed that items were left off of our orders (usually drinks) and we had to chase down the delivery person to get what we had paid for. A couple of weeks ago, I asked the delivery person if he had the drinks with him. He claimed I'd never ordered them. When I pointed to them on the bill, he agreed to go back and get the drinks I'd paid for. After two hours with no drinks, I called the restaurant and was assured the delivery person was on their way. I am still waiting. Tonight, I thought "Perhaps they just had an off night. I'll try again." Big mistake. I placed the order and then phoned to follow-up. I politely asked them to make sure all items were included this time. I was assured me they would be. 45 minutes after the estimated time of delivery had passed (1 1/2 hours after I had placed the order), I phoned to find out where the food was. The lady who answered the phone put it down, after which I could hear her laughing hysterically in the background, then she picked up the phone and informed me that it was a "very busy night" and that my food "just came out of the kitchen." Half an hour later, still no food. Clearly, we had been lied to. We went out for dinner and left a note (see the photos for the note). If you want good Dim Sum, go to Don Mee's. If you want decent delivery, try Lum's. Do not bother with the Jade Fountain. read more

THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I've ever experienced. We knew there was a language barrier and I gave our waitress the benefit of the doubt that we just didn't understand each other, however she was thoroughly dismissive throughout our meal. She was very impatient when we were trying to ask her about a specific dish we had. Mind you we were the ONLY TABLE during the entire dinner service. She then ignored me when I asked for a to go soup bowl. When I asked her again for a bigger soup bowl she sighed loudly rolled her eyes rudely walked up to our table poured the rest of the soup in the TOO SMALL CONTAINER and threw the lid on. And rudely told us she was right in broken English about not needing a bigger container. The soup overflowed all over the table as my poor mom tried to seal it, getting her hands dirty. I regret this restaurant at all. NEVER EAT IN. Stick to skip the dishes if you plan on supporting this business. At least you won't feel like an inconvenience of being a customer. read more

This place is a little difficult to review. It was not very busy when we arrived. The food was very tasty and hot although it did take a while for it to come. The portions were fairly big and the prices were fairly decent. However they didn't have any sort of hard liquor. That was alright although a little surprising and when Karaoke started and the throngs came in we did hightail it. There a couple of things that we found a little disturbing. One was the state or the bathrooms, they didn't look like anything had been changed or remodelled in about ten years or so. Meaning there was about that much grime all over the walls and nooks and crannies that all the scrubbing in the world would not take off. That goes for the "carpet", or I think that's what I we were walking on. So that really made me question the rest of the establishment. Particularly the kitchen! Sadly the customer service was really lacking. The lady would take one or two drink orders at our table (there were 12-13 of us) and the worst part was when one of my guests let out a tremendous scream and not one of the staff members came to see what was wrong!!! When I say scream, I mean scream! My guest had put her hands on her seat to move it closer to the table. What she had not realized that the seat she was sitting on had come unglued/unscrewed? from the chair so her index finger was caught between the seat and the wooden part of the chair. Not only was her scream loud enough to raise the dead but she also crashed her chair up against a partition wall directly behind her when she jumped up. Not ONE person came to see what had happened.
