I ordered through DoorDash for delivery, a combo. after almost finishing my food I felt a spiky thing, and it looks to be AN INSECT LEG..... I used to love this place, but what on earth is this??

A group of 8 of us went for Chinese New Year and we made a point of making aa reservation but that seemed to mean nothing. One group was in front of us and a bunch behInd us, but at least two big groups of people walked in aafterr us and got sseated. We waited At least 45 minutes. The Dim Sum was deliciibut noticed fewer meat dishes coming round. The GAi LAN was delicious but never saw any pork bbq buns or steamed pork buns.

Genuine south Chinese cuisine served fresh. Yes, you can order off menu, and if they have it, Johnny will cook it for you. Rock cod, scallops, pork, chicken, squab, shrimp - a huge variety. Not a great place if you're claustrophobic - the atmospheres is tight and noisy. But that's not what you come here for.

To get to this restaurant you would need to go through the hotel lobby and take the elevator down one floor. Once inside, it was a 45-minute wait for lunch on a weekday. There were only two of us and since they had mostly large tables, we got passed a couple of times in favor of parties with 5 or more. After the third time, I mentioned to the hostess that although there were only two of us, we would be ordering to-go food for the the rest of our family so technically, we would be purchasing food for 5 people. Still a flat "no". Well, we finally got sat and dim sum carts started coming our way. Dim Sum selection was very limited and portion size and flavor were mediocre at best. We asked for a dinner menu as the lunch menu did not offer very many choices. Service was pretty much non-existent in this restaurant (they forgot out request for hot tea refill and extra sauce). We ordered fried rice, salt and pepper shrimp, pork chop and some vegetables to-go. The food was probably one of the worst Chinese food I have ever had - tough, no flavor and the fried rice tasted like it was reheated from the night before. Our bill totaled $224 before tax so I think we ate for a party of 10!

View from the small table in the back (I was solo, only place I wouldn't have wasted a table for 4).

I think it would probably be busier at lunch since they do have a dim sum menu. We ordered off the dim sum menu because I was hungry for it and they still offered it. From the regular menu I just got stir fry pea vines. The pea vines were crunchy and garlicky. They were to my liking. On the dim sum menu we got tripe, Xiao long Bao, omasum, har gow, chicken feet, and ham sui gok. My favorites on the dim sum menu were the tripe, Xiao long Bao, and chicken feet. The omasum was a bit too chewy and needed to be cooked long because I also had a hard time eating it. Everything else filled me up quickly and they were a great late night eat! Overall, Golden City is a standard place for Chinese food. The employees were nice but it's easier to talk to them if you have another mandarin speaker with you. My partner speaks mandarin so he helped me order.

I know of plenty better places but unfortunately I was visiting Canada for a few days and thought this might be half way decent. I was dead wrong. Don't come here unless you have low expectations and have no idea what great or even good Chinese food tastes like... and we ordered at least 20 different plates as a group that's how I know most of the food was trash. The only decent plate was the Lemon Chicken.

Instead, we decided to stay and enjoy a meal. We started with hot tea and soup. The soup was definitely the highlight of the meal--flavorful, comforting, and served nice and hot. For our entrees, we ordered the lo mein and a fried rice combo platter. The lo mein was just okay and didn't really stand out, but the fried rice combo platter was excellent and full of flavor. We thoroughly enjoyed that dish. The restaurant itself felt a little tight in terms of seating space, but the atmosphere was still pleasant. Despite not getting to try the bakery items we came for, we had a good time, enjoyed our meal, and left satisfied.
