I wanted to try this restaurant as positive reviews and seafood in its Jade Garden Seafood Restaurant Chinatown Boston. Lunch specials all 7.95? I have not seen a restaurant sell a meal lunch entree for 7.95 in recent times. I asked the waiter what seafood is in the special... told shrimp, scallops. Well incorrect.. was 3 mini cocktail size shrimp, a single shaving of a scallop razor thin, and what I couldn't eat looked to be calamari or squid or unknown. I shouldn't expect much for $7.95 and I know. It was all fresh, and big pile of white rice all fresh vegetables. I should have ordered a regular entree. To be fair; I easedropped ,snooped, observed, stared intently on the many dishes coming out of kitchen to another group of diners... all excellent looking dishes bettervthan mine. I'd eat here again and order something different. Beef teriyaki appetizer was ok, not my best eaten elsewhere . Tea was good. Service fast. Good menu, prices, food looks excellent prepared. Seafood is a clear fresh choice here with tanks . On an observed side note: appears restaurant entire staff lunch or dinner precisely at 3 pm . Incoming Customers are turned away at 3:01, and service stops. It appears if you are still there... the staff sits down for foid orgy of dishes I watched them eat... greens, a the steamed fish platter, a chicken rice platter and once they are engaged in the eating process...customers are out of any expected service...You dont want to interrupt this meal event as the staff in feeding frenzy . Anyway; plan around 3 pm timeframe. The Bakery across the street had excellent cofffee flavored cream sponge cake,Custard cups ... very inexpensive. We flew into Boston late and didn't get to our hotel until midnight. Hungry, we had few options but Jade Garden came to the rescue!! New Yorker here! With only one meal/restaurant to choose from for the half day trip in Boston, we settled on Jade Garden - best decision of the day! Our party of five agreed this was one of the better meals we've had in quite a long time, and maybe even slightly better than some of the offerings we would get in Chinatown, NYC. Let's start with the group's favorite: Eel: not sure what this is called in English, but this should be a steamed eel with black bean sauce. I don't normally eat eel, and certainly not prepared this way, but my goshhhh it was DELICIOUS! It's not quite slimy, but has that kind of texture, soft and delicious. Just don't eat the skin as that's the slimier part if you can't handle it. I couldn't stop eating this Salt & Pepper Soft Shell Crab: another hit! Fresh, juicy, crispy and perfectly coated with flavor, this was gone in two minutes. There aren't that many pieces, so you should definitely get two orders of this! Dungeness crab: fresh! Salt & Pepper Pork Chops: these should definitely be eaten fresh and immediately as they were so juicy and crispy but after 30 minutes had passed and there were a few pieces remaining, the pork had definitely hardened by quite a lot and didn't taste that good anymore. Garlic Pea Shoots: get this! There's a lady in the front that sits there peeling these pea shoots carefully so you know it's fresh. It's super laborious though for them, but that effort enabled us to eat a cleaner and softer pea shoots dish that is definitely worth raving about. We left nothing behind! I have low expectations for Chinese / Cantonese banquet-style food but there were two dishes I thoroughly enjoyed: 1. Claypot eggplant with salted fish and pork - the eggplant was SO soft and mushy, just melted in your mouth! The fish and pork definitely added some other sort of savory, meaty flavor, and it didn't have that generic darker stir-fried eggplant you get at most Chinese restaurants here. Sometimes you'd get little bits of salted fish as a tasty salty surprise! Even the cooked lettuce was enjoyable. 2. Stir fried pea shoots - possibly better than what I've had in China, these had snappy stems and tender leaves! Mapo tofu was enjoyable, this version wasn't spicy! Bok choy could have been more tender. Fried rice and beef chow fun were ok. Steamed flounder was meaty but had a dirt taste. We came out late at night on a whim, it's open very late and had a large menu. The portion sizes are crazy large, shareable between multiple people. We learned the hard way on this one but ate what we could! They have vegan and vegetarian options. I specially asked for no fish or oyster sauce and was assured they wouldn't be in my dishes. When you first walk in, they have fresh crab, elk and fishes in tanks so you know it's fresh. The staff are FAST. We got our food in under ten minutes. We also ordered beer and hot tea. One thing I notice if we did have to ask multiple times for a few things and it was surprisingly busy at 11 at night here. The menu is in Chinese and English. This place is meant for large groups. Offered wood ear mushrooms too. Authentic. Nice spike kick to it. Very little eggplant pieces though and an overwhelming amount of snap peas and bamboo shoots. * seafood chow fun - delicious. Great flavor. Authentic. Generous portions. * black bean cod - very tender. Average straightforward black bean sauce * sweet sour beef - again extremely chewy beef. Each piece was cut very large so it was hard to chew and swallow. Flavor was also full. * choy sun with oyster sauce - too much water. They should've drained the dish before serving it. If I could rate it a one star u would. The glass for our cups were nasty and so dirty you could see and feel the dirt. The chicken tasted like it had gone bad and right when you walk it smells like the tanks for the seafood hadn't been cleaned it awhile. We ended up leaving with out eating much of anything because of the taste and the server had the audacity to ask about a tip. You are lucky we even paid at all. This is the place to go for Cantonese food when in Chinatown. You cannot go wrong with any of the dishes. Their speciality is seafood. You can order live seafood from the fish tanks at the front of the restaurant. It does get busy on weekends so better to make reservations ahead of time. It does get noisy when it's a full house. So not really a place for a quiet intimate meal but definitely one with a larger group so you can order many dishes to eat family style. read more

There are an overwhelming amount of restaurants in China Town and we weren't sure where to go. We wanted family style dining with lots of options. A quick search on Yelp and we found this place. It's kind of non-descript outside which tells me immediately it's goin to be amazing. Once you find your way in, there are fish tanks along the entrance showing off their fresh seafood, and a small desk with someone waiting for you to dine in or take out. We were seated immediately and handed menus by someone who most definitely didn't speak English which is another sign this place was gonna be wonderful. The menu was full of stuff I hadn't heard of but there were photos. We ended up going basic and ordered the crab rangoon (it's a masssssive plate of 12 for $12 win win), the beef chow mein, and general tso's chicken. This is officially a Chinatown institution at this point. They've been around for many years and it's because they remain consistent with good food and fast service. I was wondering why I haven't come here for a long time but now I know why. The place is huge and empty. When they seat you it seems like you are bothering them. It took forever for a waiter to come to take my order and then to bring the check even thought there were at least 5 other employees standing around me. One female employee in the huge empty dining room was screaming loudly in Chinese. It seemed to annoy my waiter when I asked for water. The food was good. Nothing special. And if you are looking for that Mai Tai then move on. They can only serve beer and wine. They do a lot of takeout so maybe that's an option. Jade garden is a quick walk from the Chinatown T stop on the orange line. We got the Shrimp In Szechuan Style, Stir Fried Pea Pod Stems, Yu Shiang Chicken and rice. I liked all the dishes but the Yu Shiang Chicken was my favorite. It was full of flavor and had a good sauce to chicken ratio. The service is quick and they are open late at night. Jade Garden is definitely a local favorite within the Boston Chinatown community. They use some of the freshest ingredients to prepare their dishes. Crispy fresh vegetables, Juicy chicken, te der beefs, perfectly marinated pork and of course, the freshest seafood as you will notice once you step into the restaurant, you will see huge tanks of fresh seafood from fish to shrimps and lobsters and crabs. They have a large menu and some of the featured dishes are twin lobster Cantonese style over a bed of noodles, pan seared prime rib with string beans, garlic chicken, sweet and sour pork chop, garlic peapod stems. The crab Rangoons were my least favorite because I did not taste the crab but they were still tasty. However the service is another story. They said they were busy but this was not the case- I say this because the waiter rushed us to order and demanded that we order everything at once. So yes the food all came out at one time - hehehe- not really how I eat Chinese. And then the wait staff was- rude and avoidant. After a night of drinking my friends wanted some Asian food- specifically congee. Where to find it? At an Asian place that is open late! Of course. We got seated right away. The server was Asian thuggish but super chill. We asked for congee, which we didn't see on the menu, he said it's on the secret menu. So we ordered a bowl. Came here with a cantonese friend who knows a lot about cantonese food. We came here because the Gaga seafood restaurant across the street was packed. The space is huge but only 2 or 3 tables were seated. We ordered fried sweet milk, taco duck, pork and preserved egg porridge, and tofu pot. I liked the fried sweet milk and the porridge, which tasted about right (exactly like i had in China). However, the taro duck is not as appealing. The duck meat is overcooked and not as fresh. My cantonese food expert friend said it's not as authentic and fresh. I probably will choose Hongkong eatery or Gaga seafood restaurant if I'm craving for cantonese food next time. This is one of those restaurants where I'd go to really late at night if I'm hungry or after the club at 2am. I'm not a huge fan of Chinese food but I don't hate this restaurant. The workers are funny and the food is good. I think that it's the obnoxiousness of other drunk or ignorant people within the restaurant that makes the experience a little less pleasing. Honestly, you don't realize how mean people can be until you hear them make fun of these Chinese workers and their food, they came into the restaurant to eat Chinese food right, so why are they making fun of everything. But besides from that, I would prefer coming here than Peach Farm if I'm coming out of the club. Their salty fish fried rice was pretty good and there were actual hints of the salty fish - some places make it so bland that it just tastes like rice tossed in soy sauce. The calamari was pretty standard calamari and the half chicken was pretty good - we had leftovers and the chicken was still good the next day, make sure they pack it well though because all the sauce in our box just got all over the bag by the time we got home. The food items and how people feel about them has been covered here extensively so just say my own impressions. We came on a Sunday afternoon prior to a show, got a table in a very empty restaurant , and when we left there were zero tables left it was so full. Quite delicious family style food, simple ordering, not too expensive, big portions, and a very Chinatown experience of big families and friends around the tables, sparse decor, and fresh fish and eels and crabs and lobsters in the tanks when you walked in. Service was just fine, we had to flag down waiters but everyone was very pleasant to us and I prefer not to be pestered by waitstaff every five minutes when I eat so I found it to be enjoyable.
