It's not common to find a dim sum spot with a lot of menu items I can have. Usually it's just a few. So this is a great spot with many great options. The first time I went there I ordered nearly half the menu to share because I just wanted to try so many things. I can't say that was the only time I did that. That just means there will be leftovers to enjoy. So far I've had the Mapo Tofu which is definitely flavorful and Sichuan comes through. Gailan I usually get this whenever I see it on a menu. It didn't disappoint either. Woodear Mushroom great flavor and sesame taste. Congee a delicious comfort foor for me. It was great here. Char siu bao was pretty good and I'd get again. Fierywind noodle soup was great and I'd get it again Jade dumplings were cute and delicious. Puto bao also cute and delicious Turnip cakes were delicious too. Ube desserts I tried were good. Kimchi. I'd recommend any of the above list. Some I didn't like as much- Special chow fun it was just bland. Some dishes I want to try next are Darkside Noodles, Sisig, and the Adobo. They do add a 22% service charge when dining in regardless of party size for servers and request not to tip. read more

I was a bit unsure about this spot at first as it seemed like one of those "gentrified Asian restaurants", but I was so so nicely surprised. I truly believe this spot offers something amazing to the vegan Portland scene that is difficult to do well. It is difficult to cook dim sum foods without losing the character of the dishes, and especially a vegan version--I never seen it done properly before. The inside of the restaurant is beautiful decorated and offers bar seating and upstairs seating. Make sure to make a reservation as you might get stuck at the bar and have limited dish options (that's what happened to me the first time, and what prompted me to come back just days later with a reservation). Their menu isn't huge, but there's a lot of variety and different types of dishes. Some of my personal (and my friend's) favorites were: the chili oil wontons (get them!!), the char siu bao, and the mapo tofu. This is the place I have been waiting for for years! As a vegan married to someone with celiac, it's been years since my partner and I have been able to share plates at dim sum. When we go out to dim sum with my family, my partner has to order his own dish and I usually eat two or three of the options my family orders. While understandable why Jade Rabbit doesn't have the traditional push carts, it's still the answer I have been looking for since we moved to PDX! In additional to being all vegan, it's obvious Jade Rabbit aims to be inclusive to gluten-free customers, with many of the items adapted to be gluten-free, including the bunny bao buns! The menu is labeled to make ordering easier, and the server also informed us all gluten-free items are prepared separately to minimize cross contact! We ordered several items for both of us to share: the cute bunny bao buns, cheung fun, bean curd wraps, and lo mai gai (sticky rice Iotus leaf) for dim sum. We also ordered the adobo from the big bowl menu, which I wasn't too interested in at first, but it ended up being one of my favorite items! They recommend two dishes per person, but we wanted to try everything. The only downside is the fifth dish caused our table to be a little crowded. Unfortunately, they were out of the hargow and we weren't able to try the shrimp, but the vegan beef and chicken blew our minds! I think my favorite was the lo mai gai, but I loved everything! And the flavor and texture of the bao bun was incredibly spot on for being made with rice flour! The non-alcoholic beverage options were plentiful. I chose the yuzu lemonade, which I loved! It is easily my favorite restaurant we've tried since moving to PDX, and we're definitely planning on coming back to try more of the menu! Jade Rabbit offers a unique experience for both vegans and non-vegans seeking pan-Asian cuisines, specifically elevating vegan dim sum. I think it's a comfort to try vegan substitutes of predominately meat-based dishes like the char siu baos. The chili oil wonton sauce was yummy, but I thought that the wonton wrapper was too thick and fried, similarly to the rangoons. I liked the filing ratio of the chili oil wonton and thought that they were stuffed perfectly. Whereas, the rangoons lacked filling, so I felt like I was mainly eating the wonton wrapper. The chicken adobo was a little too salty for my preference and the rice was a little mushy, but I like the inclusion of the fresh cherry tomatoes. The jade rabbit was my favorite cocktail. This was my second time visiting Jade Rabbit, both times with traditional meat eaters, while I prefer vegetarian/vegan. We ordered the Rangoon, Puto Pao Bunny Bao, Char Siu Bao, Mapo Tofu, Fiery Wind Noodle Soup, plus the Tigers Eye zero proof drink and the Lychee Lemon Drop. The Rangoon was more flavorful the first visit, but still tasty on the second visit. The bunny Bao needed more filling and we would not order that again. The char siu bao is outstanding! Perfect texture and flavor! The mapo tofu is nice and spicy with an almost curry-like flavor to it. Definitely a must order in my opinion. The fiery wind soup was not our favorite as it was really heavy feeling and not our favorite flavors. We found the tigers eye drink to be ok but the lychee lemon drop is by far the star of the show and worth getting every time! The seating is for 10 tables only so reservations are necessary. I would not say it's a cozy seating experience but I love the jade walls. I would love to see the downstairs atmosphere translate to the dining space upstairs as that would really bring personality to the space. We visited this vegan dim sum restaurant (apparently, one of only three in the U.S.) for our anniversary dinner, and unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment. The reviews and ratings drove us to trying this place. The food lacked flavor and texture, and the service was very slow. The dim sum (jade rabbit dumplings) were just steamed dough with no filling, and the noodle soup, supposedly a specialty & turnip cakes was completely bland. We just found ourselves adding chilli oil to everything to get some flavour out. The vegan, gluten-free brownie we tried was rubbery and unappetizing--definitely not edible. The only decent item that we willingly finished was the wood ear mushrooms which was served cold but had some taste to it. We were told to order everything at once because the chef prefers it that way, but the food still took 45 minutes to arrive. Loved the experience here: unique vegan dim sum that doesn't make you feel sick from the oil and MSG afterwards This is a modern and trendy spot, not where you'd go to experience the traditional asian dim sum. It's definitely worth it! We enjoyed the bean card, mochi bunnies, siu Mai (better than the meat version I say). The turnip cake and char siu Bao were also tasty but not super unique. Each dish will run you $8-14 or so, so it's not cheap and unless you order a lot, you may not leave feeling super full. They also had some bowls and limited desserts. They also have a good selection of teas. They have a few tables upstairs and outside and you can sit around the bar. We haven't seen it super busy inside but if they did get an influx I could see there being a wait because of the size of the place. Came in on a Wednesday night, because this place is always sold out it seems in the weekend. Was suuuuper excited to try this place. As a vegetarian who used to love pork bao buns I was excited to try the ones they have here. We ordered the mung bean wraps, black sesame noodles, crispy wontons and the rabbit baos. I enjoyed everything for the most part, I think the baos and the crispy wontons were my favorite. The noodles while having great flavor were a littleee too spicy for me and they were cold which I wasn't expecting but I don't think necessarily took from the experience. The mung beans were just lacking in flavor and texture. I was expecting a crunchy texture since it said from the grill. I had such a fun time at their original location that I decided to celebrate my birthday at the new location, but ended up very disappointed. - Food: The food was good. Some items arrived lukewarm, and "spicy" items weren't noticeably spicy, but the overall flavors were solid, and I enjoyed everything (except the noodles that had a sulfuric smell/flavor and were cold, when I was expecting them to be warm). - Service: The service was bad. - We were seated immediately, but had to wait a while for our server. He recited his lines, which felt robotic, didn't check on us often, and we had to wave him down repeatedly to ask for more water or the check. They didn't pick up any empty dishes from the table, which made it hard to share food (especially on the small tables). - When we asked for the drink menu they told us that they were having a hard time getting a liquor license because they're worker owned, so they couldn't serve drinks. I wish they'd said that before I planned a birthday dinner there. - Someone came to pour our tea, and she said she was super nervous because it was her first time pouring tea -- she said she forgot her lines, and her hands were shaking enough that she splashed a bit of hot water onto the table and it dripped onto someone's lap. She was great, but it was sad that she was sent alone to do something she was so unfamiliar and uncomfortable with. - Ambiance: The ambiance was bad. The old location felt upscale, well lit, clean, and the high cost of food felt aligned with the experience. What a beautiful dining area! The emerald/jade color theme was delightful and offered a bit of class to the place. I don't know if it was the distillery or Jade rabbit who handled the decor but I enjoyed it a lot. We dined upstairs at their larger table, they also have seats outside and at the bar downstairs. Tried most of their dim sum offerings - the standouts were the chili wontons and kimchi cakes, which aren't technically Cantonese dim sum. The shu mai and bean curd rolls were on the dry side and could have used more sauce or binding agent to hold the moisture while being cooked. I think if you go here expecting Cantonese dim sum you'll be disappointed. But if you go here with an open mind, and have vegan/gluten free friends, you'll have a good time. We did have reservations but we still had to wait an additional 20 minutes to get our table for our party of 5. The drinks are some of the best I have had with the cutest ice cubes. The entire food menu is plant-based. I loved the Jade Rabbit Dumplings and Kimchi Mungbean Cakes. The Siu Mai was good but not impressive. All are definitely filling, as they should be for the price. The Chocolate Ube Mochi Brownie was good, as was the Jasmine Dragon Toddy. The restaurant is part of a distillery, which makes the spirits that go into their cocktail menu. When it comes to originality, this place hits it out of the park. The only downside is that it is pricey, as vegan restaurants generally are in Portland. I love the small U-shaped bar downstairs, because it is conducive to interaction with other patrons seated there. I went there by myself, and literally had dinner with the two patrons who also came in solo. One was attending the same convention as me, and the other was from my hometown. Another chance to dine in: Tasty, inauthentic Chinese-style food, but quite overpriced, especially for the dim sum dishes. We stopped in for dinner on a Thursday around 8pm, and they were all full. But they offered us at the bar counter and told us we could still order food from a more limited menu. We took up the offer. To start, we split an order of the Puto Pao Bunny Bao ($14) -- Filipino style steamed rice flour buns with vegan pork, black garlic and brown sugar -- and Chili Oil Wontons ($14) -- filled with vegan beef and spring onion. The wontons were really nicely done, with firm, tightly stuffed meat wrapped in a nice wrapper -- and it all came in a slightly sweet, delicious chili oil. The baos, on the other hand, were not as soft as they should be, and kind of lacking in filling -- very overpriced at $14 for 3. For our mains, we each got an order of the Fiery Wind Noodle Soup ($20). The broth was very spicy but rather lacking complexity. The vegan chicken was fantastic however, and the soup came with nicely cooked flat wide rice noodles, and a couple pieces of yue choy. At $20, this was quite overpriced. All in all, good food, but not worth the price, even adjusting for the fact that the establishment "pays a living wage" to their employees, thus obviating the need for a tip (even though they leave room for an additional tip when paying the bill). Everything we had was amazing! Started with the gailan and the siu mai, and we were already in heaven. Then, the Lo Mai Gai and the Jade Rabbit dumplings arrived and it was even better. For the 2 of us, this ended up being plenty of food, and we had a couple pieces leftover which we took to go. I'm still dreaming of that gailan. That would make any broccoli hater change their mind. Let me start off by saying I would never expect a vegan dim sum place to compare to normal dim sum, but this place tastes amazing! I still do eat meat, but my fiancé is fully vegetarian. So, my memory for dim sum dishes is very fresh in my mind. I am Chinese so it's hard to stray from classic dim sum for too long. We went two days in a row because we were both happy with the way the food tasted and wanted to try more of the menu. First of all, get a reservation on the weekend because they only have 10 tables and the full menu is not available for people at the bar. Jade rabbit: these are so cute, but unfortunately for me there's too much breading in the bunny for me and less meat filling (specifically the bunny head is very bread forward). Puto pao bunny: these are also unbelievably cute and there is the same issue as above. Filling is tasty, but I'd love more of it. Fiery wind noodle soup: if you're afraid this is spicy; it's not really. It's a nice refreshing vegan soup with tasty noodles. The chicken was my favorite part because the texture and taste is pretty accurate. However, I'm a salty, decadent, oily broth girl, so this wasn't my fave. I know it looks a bit oily but it tastes very clean and not heavy at all. My fiancé loved it and said of all the vegan broths he's had it is one of the more flavorful. Fried/chili wontons: we got both types of wontons. They were delicious. My fiancé loved them both and it was a 5/5 for him. He would probably come back just to have these and the char siu bao which I will get to. Very accurate taste as well. Texture is mostly accurate to meat. Char siu bao: my personal favorite of the first round of food we ordered. My fiancé also loved these and would probably just come back for these if he was craving. It is very accurate in taste and texture. Frankly, I've had Chinese pork char siu bao buns made by actual Chinese companies that are left in the dust compared to these. Could they be fuller? Technically, yes. But I felt like the amount of filling was good for the size of them as the bao itself was not oversized. The filling was sweet but savory, texture was on point, and you really can't go wrong with these. So, of course we came back a second time. We didn't take photos sadly since we ate everything quickly but we tried: Bean curd rolls: so maybe I'm showing my bias but I adore bean curd. It's my life blood in Chinese food, and my fiancé also loves it and mostly relies on it whenever we get hot pot or anything like that. These have some of my favorite ingredients: bean curd, black fungus, and mung bean noodle. Chef's kiss. Delicious. If you added pork and shrimp it would be authentically Chinese but this is so close and I didn't miss the meat at all. My fiancé also loved these and we took some more home since he always snacks after we go out to eat. He loves seconds. Siu mai dumplings: extremely accurate to siu mai dumplings you'd get at a classic dim sum place. Amazing. Texture is right, taste is there. My fiancé loved these. Delish. Wood ear mushroom salad: I am a wood ear mushroom / black fungus lover so....... I really enjoyed it and would order probably every time. Congee: thick! Very glutinous... which I really love. The flavor is very congee. Comforting and simple, clean tasting. I like how they had essentially vegan pork floss over it which really nice. Drinks: I tried the dragon blood garnet, which was good with dragon fruit flavor. However, my favorite was the citrine. They're both good but I think the second was more to my taste, lemony and gingery. So all in all, the food is great, service is also great, I love the decor, and would like to try more of their drink menu but I've been trying to stay away from alcohol. Went to Jade Rabbit last night, there were some great flavors in there and the service was great too! We really loved the gailan, puto pao bunny dumplings, and charsiu bao. Not everything came out warm, which may have affected the taste and flavor, but overall it was still great. Order the gailan!!! The lo mai gai tasted very different than we were expecting and wasn't our favorite. I thought it would be a more savory sweet flavor with a hint of lotus leaf like how it is at other dimsum places, but it tasted very vinegary and very lotus-y. If that is your vibe, definitely order it. I will say that some things needed more flavor added than others, but i love the concept and the hard work of the staff. The ambiance is very nice, the service was great too. Definitely want to return again to try some of their bowls! Love that their whole menu is vegan I would recommend everyone give them a try!! VEGAN DIM SUM! What more needs to be said? While I never been to Jade Rabbit physical establishments during my stay, we did manage to get local delivery before the service had ended and tried the following. Lumpia came in triplets, they were crisp, long, and filled with tasty goodness. Bean Curd Rolls came with gravy on top, they were fried yet soft, and also filled with tasty goodness. Lo Mai Gai came with side of their homemade chili oil. Takes some effort to get each neatly open, but once that is done you will find sticky rice with assorted savory fillings such as shitake mushroom and vegan chicken. This was definitely a favorite! Turnip Cake also known as Lo Bak Go is a classic staple. This was charred on the outside and soft inside. It had great texture but was overwhelming salty. The sauce was definitely not needed. Pass me a bowl of rice tho! Cheung Fun was garnished with spring onions, filled with mince meat and a piece of shrimp per roll. This was simply lovely with the sweet soy sauce. The mince meat filing was the highlight of this Dim Sum. The Bawan Buns were simply too cute to eat! Their signature dumplings had a subtle amount of filling. The dough to filling ratio could be worked on but these are definitely aesthetic. Bunny Halo Halo Bun were the sweet version of their signature rabbit dumplings. These also had minimal filling and not too sweet but was a nice way to wrap up the meal. After the trip, we learned that started national wide shipping! So we made an order and got to try some items at home that were not available during our last visit. Siu Mai came in a pack of four topped with caviar like pearls. They were big, juicy, and extra meaty. Char Su Bao came in a pack of three and do I wish we ordered more! These steam up really nicely and imitation pork was bomb. Adobo Chicken came in a meal for two but really this could have easily feed four! If you have to try anything, this is it. I know I screamed Dim Sum but this Filipino dish is where it is at. Full of flavor and cooked to perfection. The vegan chicken is tender and the vegetables compliments it well. Just cook some rice for the side! We also ordered repeat items of their homemade chili oil called Pheonix Fire (full of mushroom flavor), Cheung Fun, and Bean Curd Rolls. Unfortunately the rolls do not ship well so steaming could not save them. Try these locally if you can! The bean curd rolls were missing the unique gravy that was offered from the restaurant. Nerveless they were still good, just better fresh. Overall the food was an enjoyable journey for our taste buds and will definitely order again. Delivery or shipping. I reallyyyy wanted to love this place. Not vegan (though enjoy some solid vegan food) but I have celiac, so gluten free dim sum is pretty much a non-existent option when eating out most places. So when I came across this place I had heart palpitations from excitement. The first time we tried to eat here, we walked up to the door, and realized it was reservations only, so couldn't get a table. Website doesn't mention anywhere that they don't accept walk ins, and since that is sort of an important piece of info, would probably recommend they post that in BOLD on their website, for the spontaneous people who want some vegan dim sum. Anyway. Restaurant is beautiful, very chic and modern. Server was helpful and checked in plenty, and cocktails were yummy. I had the 'everything everywhere all at once' and remember it being pretty well balanced. We also had classic old fashions which I think I preferred over the house cocktail, but overall drinks were good. So, the food - most disappointing part of the experience. While they don't tell you they are reservations only, they do explain on their website that they run out of stuff all the time, so basically don't expect the whole menu to be available at any given time. Most of the stuff we wanted to try was not available - which ok, fine, they technically give you a warning, but maybe if they know the problem exists, why not try and fix it? We ended up getting the congee, mung bean cakes, bunny bao, and some sort of other dumpling which I can't recall. The dumpling I can't recall was not good. I don't know what it was, it doesn't look like it's on the menu anymore (we went in early March) and can't comment much other than it not being good. The bunny bao were so cute! The dumpling itself was ok, but the filling was underwhelming and boring. The congee was also under seasoned and needed loads of soy sauce and spicy crunch added to it to make it taste less like the rice version of plain oatmeal. Mung bean cakes were probably our favorite. I love the idea of vegan dim sum, and honestly sorta wanna go back on a less busy night and try some of the things they didn't have when we went. This review is coming in hot from someone who is NOT vegan and does not have very much experience with vegan food. I came here with a friend who is vegan and she is always raving about this place. So of course I had to go with her and give it a try! I let her order because I wasn't sure what to get. And basically we ended up with almost every dish, haha! The Emerald Room is super pretty and such a vibe. I loved the decor, the bar set up, and how the tables were upstairs as well. We started with some cocktails and then got down to business. We ordered the following: - Gailan (SO SO good and so flavorful!) - Bawan Bunny Dumplings - Char Siu Bao - Siu Mai Dumplings - Chili Oil Wontons (my FAVORITE) - Rangoons (my second favorite!) As someone who loves meat, I was surprised with how much I LOVED this place. It made me realize how delicious vegan food is and how flavorful it can be! There is a Really beautiful ambiance and energy here. We enjoyed absolutely everything we ordered. My favorite were the bao buns and the jade bunnies(they are so cute and squishy) the staff was kind and helpful with recommendations. We would love to come back here to try more menu items! read more

This was a fun experience dipping my toes into upscale vegan cuisine. The aesthetics are adorable and the food was tasty. We really enjoyed the tea service as well, so nice to slow down and savor the moment. Our favorite was the chili wontons. read more

I wasn't sure what to expect from vegan dim sum, but I was pleasantly surprised. We tried over half the dim sum items, and enjoyed them all. The siu mai was really good. The texture was super close to actual ground pork and I would (and did!) order it again. The Chili Oil Wontons were good, but the "meat" was a bit dense compared to what I had hoped. The Char Siu Bao was good! The filling was pretty close to actual char siu (a little softer, so you didn't have to bite through anything), and the bao itself was nice and fluffy, which is critical for a successful bao. We also had the gailan, lo mai gai, turnip cakes, puto pao bunny bao, kimchi mungbean cakes (another favorite), and the rangoons to give us a taste of most of what they had to offer. We finished with halo halo which was the perfect conclusion. In total, the 4 of us ordered 11 plates plus dessert (and a couple of drinks). We came out to about $160 before tip, so it was a pricy night, but worth it for the right occasion. read more

Really wish I could rate this restaurant except I wouldn't know how it was because they turned us away at the door when my party of 3 didn't have a reservation. The hostess looked stressed and said they were "stretched thin." Didn't ask if we were willing to wait or take a number. It would have been really, really nice if their website had said anything about requiring a res when I looked at it the day before. I've definitely seen this type of thing on other restaurant's websites so I know it's possible. Seems like their management needs to plan better. Not sure I'll bother to ever be back though. The food is Asian vegan, actually Chinese Dim Sum. It was very very good and authentic tasting. I had an oolong tea and it was delicious. Our server was very nice and real. I would definitely eat here again. And if I lived in Portland I would probably come here weekly. read more
