I have been so excited to this place out and had high hopes from the great reviews I've read. The ambience is very nice and inviting although small. The staff here were all very friendly and the presentation of everything was so cute. The drink I had was the most popular choice (The Jade Rabbit) it was so strong and only had a distinct gin taste. The food was pretty bland and the dumplings hardly had a filling which was disappointing. I tried quite a few items off the menu as something to share with everyone in my group and the only thing I found was decent were the Rangoon. Jade Rabbit is a vegan dimsum spot, offering takeout and delivery only. I love eating vegan whenever possible, and I'm a big dimsum fan, so I was excited to learn of this place and give it a try! If you're getting takeout, it's easy to miss - they're located at SE 10th and Hawthorne, behind Helium Comedy Club. Use the fenced parking lot with an entry off 10th. Below the awesome rabbit mural. Pickup area leaves much to be desired. It's in a warehouse loading zone. They've got a decent table set up with some signs and decor, but the chairs could be nicer or cleaner and maybe some potted plants or something would help it feel like a better pickup experience. Especially as our takeout order was ready ~15 minutes later than the quoted time. For a group of four, we ordered three of their menu's "big bowls" in the $13-15 range and six of the "handmade dim sum" items in the $5-8 range, plus the included sides of rice. We got: chili oil wontons, lumpia, siu mai, bawan buns, lo mai gai, cheung fun, buldak fire chicken, adobo, and kimchi-jjigae. Total pre-tip was $84. There were certain items we liked more than others, but overall our impression was that there is not enough food for the cost, especially among the main dishes. For a $15 "big bowl," presented without service or plates, I would hope to have something larger than the smallest takeout container size. That said, some of our faves from among the handmade dimsum were the chili oil wontons, the adorable bawan buns, and the cheung fun. The food was really great! This was a first vegan restaurant experience, and it was really enjoyable and delicious. The staff were nice, and seemed friendly, albeit not overly talkative. The ambiance wasn't anything special, the company I went with made the experience better. My only complaint is the high prices on top of the automatic 22% service charge even when we are a party of 2. 22 percent needs to be perfect service in that case and it was not. The server barely smiled and was so monotone. That was 15 percent at best. I think it's crazy that they force people to give employees a livable wage on top of already high prices. That amethyst, man -- it's so gorgeous and deep green sparkly and miiiiiight make your lips sparkle. The Jitter Bug is super tasty and was exactly my style. All the dim sum dishes were got to try were great. We missed two because they were sold out, but everything we tried was really fresh and well-thought-out. It pains me to only give two stars to the Jade Rabbit because the food is wonderful. But the vibe we experienced was definitely not a positive. I took my vegan family members who'd travelled down from Canada for what was meant to be a nice, too rare, family dinner together. Everyone had studied the menu, oohed and ahhhed over photos, and was ready for a memorable evening. It was. But not the kind of memory we were looking for. When we arrived we were told our reservation for four (made on their online system) had somehow turned into a reservation for two and they had no tables for four. We decided to suck it up, no biggie though a disappointment, and said we'd sit at their long row of single seats against the wall. We'd just begun perusing the drinks menu when a server approached. "We've had a cancellation," she said, "so we can seat you upstairs." We were gushingly grateful, followed her up the stairs, remarking at how lovely everything was. All but one of the tables upstairs were empty, though set up for later reservations, I suppose. Our reservation had been for 6:15. It was now 6:30. As she handed us our menus she said, "oh, we have another reservation coming in at 7:30. We'll need your table by then." We assured her that since we were all quite hungry we had every intention of eating and not malingering. We ordered. Drinks came fairly quickly. Half of the tables around us gradually filled but two stayed empty. My eleven year old granddaughter said, "Is our food ever going to come?" after another 25 minutes passed. Finally, the dishes began to arrive. As pretty as the picture. Everyone was starving by then (it was now after 7.00) so we didn't waste any time, dug right in. My daughter in law told our very nice server that we'd like to order a dessert but wanted to wait for it to arrive until we finished our main plates. She took the order, said it wouldn't be a problem. We finished our food. Two of the tables stayed empty. We waited for the dessert. We waited for the dessert. We waited..... The server arrived with the check, but no dessert. "We need your table, " she said. "Does this mean we're not getting our dessert?" I asked on behalf of my granddaughter, who really was hoping for it. "I don't want to pay for it if it isn't coming." I said, in a friendly, kind of jokey manner. "No, it's coming," she assured me. "I just wanted to cash you out." I put my card on the tray, not thrilled about this being hustled out of there energy, even before the meal was finished. We continued to wait. Seven minutes later she re-appeared. "I'm so sorry, " she told us, "but the kitchen seems to have run out of your dessert. They didn't tell me until now. I've adjusted your check. Even took off an item by way of apology." Which was nice. But. The place had people waiting to come in. No one was going to be able to have dessert that evening? I mean, there are only three choices on the menu and one of them is alcohol. My granddaughter was visibly upset. My daughter in law said, "I'm pretty sure they had dessert. They just wanted us out of here so they could use this table. They would never treat you like this in Canada," she added. I was embarrassed for the Jade Rabbit. Weird vibe, people. If you don't mind feeing like your presence is an inconvenience and you're willing to be rushed through a meal after the kitchen uses up most of your allotted time before serving you, this is your place. I'm not sure what happened. I used to love Jade Rabbit. Their dumplings were special and everything I'd tried was flavorful and had "wow" factor. But I recently tried their new location and a couple new menu items and a couple of old faves, and found it lacking. I can't in good conscience recommend Jade Rabbit anymore and it makes me sad. I love dim sum, and vegan dim sum is exciting, but the new Jade Rabbit is bland. The new location desperately needs a deep clean and attention to regular cleaning. The tables had greasy fingerprints, dust and cobwebs all around the windows. Even coming into the restaurant you're greeted by old equipment behind a rusty chainlink fence. Inside to the back of the dining room the windows look out on a weed infested patio that would be a an ideal place to sit and eat on a warm spring or summer day. But it hasn't received any TLC since the new tenants came in. Service was very slow. No attention to keeping water filled. Servers wore street clothes. Mine wore jeans and an oversized wrinkled t-shirt. Her apron was black knee length and also wrinkled and dirty. The attention to detail and class of the previous location is simply gone. To the food: We started with the pink lady salad. Nicely grilled radicchio with the bitterness I expected. But it needed acid to cut through it and unfortunately the ginger soy dressing didn't have any punch. I wanted texture and it came with fried potato sticks and mung beans, but they had lost any crunch by the time the salad was delivered. We then had the kimchi mung bean cakes. The cake itself was fine. Nothing wow. It was however dense and lukewarm. (a theme through the dinner. Plate warmer must be broken) It was to be served with a sauce of chili paste, soy sauce, and sesame oil, but it was so incredibly salty even the smallest dip left the bite inedible. A table near me also complained that the chili sauce was "straight up soy sauce". I agree. Mains: We had mapo tofu and black sesame noodles. The mapo tofu again was bland. No punch, no acidity or cut from ginger I expected. The black sesame noodles had flavor, they were decent. The noodles alone were great. I would love these in a bowl of ramen. But this dish was missing some acidity which I expected from the pickled mustard greens which I couldn't find in the dish. My main complaint was temp. Lukewarm and sauce served on the bottom made it hard to eat with chopsticks. I truly hope they improve by the time they open their patio. I would like to come back and enjoy a cocktail and dumplings again. read more

I felt really bad and couldn't thank him enough since I was dying for some dim sum and had no idea where to eat in Portland. My family and I have been wanting to try their dim sum especially since I have a family member who is a vegetarian. Currently it is take away only and placing an order online was easy. We basically ordered almost one of each dim sum item they offer. Ba Wan Buns - had a nice texture to it. The flavor wasn't that bad. The amount of filling was extremely little. $8 for 3 pieces Chili Oil Wonton - 5 extremely tiny dumplings. The chili oil sauce was not spicy, it was more a sesame oil flavor than "spicy chili" sauce. $10 for 5 wontons Bean Curd Rolls - the flavor in the stuffing was pleasant. The sauce makes it much more satisfying. $9 for 3 rolls Turnip Cakes - unfortunately the Turnip cakes were overly charred and had a burnt taste. $8 for 2 cakes Lo Mai Gai (sticky rice dumplings) - it did not have any flavor at all. The rice was overly cooked; way too mushy to our liking. $8 for 3 pieces Cheung Fun (rice noodle roll with shrimp) - had a very good flavor and texture. This was my favorite dish. Down side, only one shrimp per roll. $10 for 3 rolls Siu Mai - the dumplings was decent. The sauce I did not care for. $9 for 4 pieces Overall, the meal was subpar. We came in on a Friday night at 8 and they had a opening. Perfect date night casual. Lots of groups of four hanging out. Just a good spot. We had the lord melon mocktail, which was too sweet, but I'll give them credit for making it pretty. I would just ask for no sugar added next time. Service was excellent. We asked for recs & he said the Shumai-- definitely one of the favorites we had. Not as big of a fan of the bunny bao made with cane sugar, will probably try a different one next time. The spicy noodle soup (bowl) was good, but nothing extraordinary, but I really liked the beef with broccoli. It's flavored so well. I haven't had that dish since going vegan, so even though it's basic, I was craving it & it was perfect-- my fav after the Shumai. But then, I moved right down the street from the very place I'd given up on *and* it has decor that would make set designers for a high society 1920s movie blush? What? Is this real? I'm so sorry. I wanted to like Jade Rabbit SO badly! I'd been seeing their cute little rabbit baos on IG for ages and was so excited about an all-vegan Chinese spot. But... it was bad. My partner and I ordered the Mao Po Tofu with white rice and an order of both kinds of rabbit baos. The Ma Po was underseasoned and bland but also somehow too spicy. The rabbit baos were mushy and flavorless, sorry to say, but we literally spat them into our napkins. WORST OF ALL, the rice was entirely undercooked and crunchy :-( When we asked for a new order of rice, we were told it would take an HOUR to prepare.... I'm no chef but I've never heard of white rice taking that long to cook?? The service was extremely slow and avoidant even though the restaurant was maybe 60% full. We loved the Zulu lemonade ,wontons and spicy tofu rice bowl. The spicy soup was way too salty and way too spicy for the average person. And I'm a spicy lover. But seriously it's almost like the chef accidentally double salted it somehow. I could feel my blood pressure rising . The remedy was the mulberry leaf tea on the menu which actually helps lower blood pressure and sugar. Bunny buns were not my jam, texture was mushy in a weird way . As a vegan Chinese person, I am disappointed that the tea was the best tasting thing. I had high hopes for a vegan dim sum place, but the food was simply not good enough to justify the price. We did not enjoy the gumminess of the jade rabbit dumplings nor the lack of filling that was underseasoned. The turnip cakes were also bland and didn't taste of turnips. The sumai were just fine alone, but did taste better with the provided dipping sauce. The cha shao bao was quite good however. Very authentic tasting filling with pillowy dough. The quality of the tea was also a highlight - proper loose leaf tea served in a gai wan. We went when they opened for lunch and they said they didn't have any rice, so we couldn't get some dishes. This was disappointing since we wanted to try the Lo Mai Gai. I am quite surprised that other reviews are quite positive. I may be willing to try some other dishes to give this place one more try, but ultimately paying $62 before tip is pricey for a lunch for 2. read more

We had dinner here last night. I love dim sum, but my husband doesn't eat meat, so I thought this would be a treat for him. We were seated quickly, and then our server explained that we should order ALL non-dessert items at once and they would be delivered all together, no staging. First mistake. We waited over a half hour from ordering to be served and some of the dishes were only lukewarm when they arrived. We ordered four items: mung bean pancakes (dry and mostly tasteless), steamed wontons in chili oil (the filling was heavy, but the sauce was excellent), lo mo gai, which was good, but only three small pieces, and the shu mai, which was the best of the bunch. However, at $15 for four dumplings, I can't say there was much value for the price. We had one order of tea and one drink. With the automatic tip of 22% that was added to the bill, we spent $89. My husband liked the fact that he didn't have to worry about "hidden" meat products in the dumplings, but agreed that at these prices, and how slowly the kitchen gets food out, we won't be back. read more

The white part of the pork buns is not as fluffy and the filling is too savory. The flavors don't balance. Highly recommend arriving when location first opens for lunch. First come, first served. Female worker introduced herself and shared with us about owners, how this restaurant came to fruition, presented tea ceremony, taught us how to make our own, and poured fresh, hot green tea into beautiful ceramic cups. Aroma and ambiance were very calming, relaxing, soothing, and ideal for cool weather. You will have to be present to enjoy being in the moment. Mame was perfect in size.
