I haven't been here in years but I have always liked this place. It's rustic but bright. A very casual & happy looking atmosphere. It's kind of a cafeteria style service with the servers building your plate from the ingredients you choose. I love that! The servers are polite and fast. You can have your meal with meat or vegetarian options. I also am happy to say there are many gluten free options as well. I chose their salad-lite option. I had the shredded beef salad. The greens were fresh & crunchy. The 2 broccoli salads I had added were very tasty. The shredded beef had a good flavor. I like that you can get in & out quickly if it's not a peak dining hour. Jake's is an incredible local institution. I've been lunching here since my high school days, as my family had a business down the street. Their menu is rock-solid with an excellent choice of meats. Their pit beef is legendary around these parts and highly recommended for first timers. But their tri-tip is great as well. Their sheer amount of side options is what will bring you back in an effort to try them all. I generally avoid the fried potato offerings because of how heavy the meal already is (the portions are large here), but the cowboy potatoes are popular. I tend to favor the potato and macaroni salad choices. I haven't had the broccoli salad in a long time but remember it being crisp and fresh. And definitely go for the jalapeño corn bread - my sister's favorite. It soaks up the pit beef juices so well. And if you're gonna get dessert, the sheet cake is epic. I've seen this cake ordered for weddings and parties I've attended. But given the portion sizes, I rarely have room for it. The service is warm/friendly with staff always ready to give recommendations. Food here is served cafeteria style with trays and lots of pointing which is a great throwback. It can get crowded here during lunchtime, so their outdoor seating is a good option except in the sweltering summer. But the vibe here is casual with tons of local posters and pictures. For first goers, first walk-in, seems like a sit-down restaurant to be seated at, you're wrong, menu's are on your right-side of the wall, no greeting. Once done deciding, you go further towards a long-run counter, where you communicate to the other side to the staff, of what you would like to order. Like your typical subway or chipotle you know. Before my order was received (try-tip sandwich) worker stood there, staring at me for a while and asked "Aren't you gonna grab a tray?". Yes you read it right. Which was on his side of the counter mind you. My response "Oh sorry, thank you" grabbing it nervously. Continued talking to there other co-worker, then he asked "Uh, can I help you". NO GUIDE or direction whatsoever, idk to get sides or drinks? Which are options there now that I found out. Plus, you would think that YOU would be receiving a tray from a worker. I debated to give it one star or two, but I guess if you try someplace and you don't want to go back, "not good" is the best I can rate it. After reading a lot of reviews my friend and I decided to try it. We've been looking for a good place for Nachos. There were lots of pictures posted with melted cheese smothering the tops of the chips. They all looked delicious. We were told they were out of guacamole, and it was only 5:30 on a Saturday night, poor planning on their part. They asked if I wanted my cheese melted, yes please we replied yes please (who doesn't?). They got out the big plastic containers and started loading it up with a large handful of cold chips that looked and tasted like they came from a bag. I asked for beans (instead of meat) expecting pinto beans, from a nice batch of pot beans. The beans were not good nor pintos, and they were floating soaked in a dark red sauce, they tasted canned and not homemade even though the website says they are homemade. The sauce they were floating in made all the bottom chips soggy. The picture on the website shows the sour cream applied from a bottle and evenly spread over the surface. It looked like the perfect amount. I got a large scoop (think ice cream) on the corner of my to go container. Who wants a fist of very cold sour cream in the corner of your nachos? But speaking of cold, everything was. My beans were barely warm and the cold ingredients on top of and under them were room temp or cold, they didn't stay warm long. The cheese that was melted was not. They put the plastic box in a contraption that looked like a broiler, there was a circle of barely warmed cheese in the middle, it wasn't wasn't melted, it still looked like grated cheese, the rest of the cheese was cold. They asked if I wanted jalapenos and I said yes. But I didn't get the jalapenos My friend didn't have anything good to say about his nachos either. Other than a comment on his shredded meat. He stated that it had a generic taste with a smokey flavor that did not lend itself to the taste of nachos. As I mentioned we got the meals to go, so you may think it was warm when we left but not when we got home. Except I live 1.1 mile from there and it's a 3 minute trip. It was so disappointing and a waste of money, I threw 3/4 of mine away (I've never done that before, I'm not that kind of picky eater) and my friend didn't finish his, and it's the first time ever I've seen him not come close to finishing his meal in the 7 years or so we've been going out to dinner monthly. read more

This place has always been consistent in quality and I'm happy to confirm that their process has been adapted to handle the Covid era just fine. We ordered food over the phone and paid with a credit card. This probably sounds like a security risk but if you're confident in your credit card fraud protection and the staff, you'll be fine. Our favorites include the chicken which is always seasoned just right and juicy. The potatoes (both varieties) are also sure to leave you full. Not a pretentious place, but you tell by the crowded parking lot it has a following. Kind of different in that you order off the menu in a cafeteria style line. My nachos had deep put that was plenty tasty and a great trip tip chili. Lots and lots of toppings. It was really enough for a meal for two. I saw a salad that was a good size and looked really good as well. I kept hearing raves about the cake and how people come in just for the cake. It was super moist and tasty. A COMPLETE LACK of information to me, the customer, as to what was needed. First she tells me that she needs a phone number, which I gave. Next she asks for a name. I told her there were three separate orders and she said she wanted only one name. So I gave her mine. Then after I ordered the cakes, she asks me for a name. I told her I gave her my name. She RUDELY, AND WITH AN ATTITUDE, tells me they label the orders. Why can't they let the customer know they need a name for pick up and then a name for each individual order? We went in and the place smells like beefy heaven and I was spilling my saliva quiet literally. It is a cafeteria style of serving which you go in a line with you tray. My girlfriend and I ordered their famous tri tip plate. It looks really good!!! The tri tip might be looking delicious, but it was dry and kinda tough to chew on. The flavor of the meat is great though despite having a hard time eating it. Their sides are awesome nevertheless. I ordered their brocolli salad for our side and that might turn me into a vegetarian kinda. We ordered their chocolate cake towards the end cause it is a recommendation from our server. The chocolate cake is quiet good :) I would really suggest adding different kind of sauce in their hot sauce stand. I would bump my stars to 4.5 stars if they did. I got the "Oak" Tri Tip Sandwhich than my fiance got The Works Burrito. Delicious flavourful filling meals, oh my God so freaking good. We were full about half way through but we kept stuffing our faces because it was so good. Delightful service from workers, place was clean and inviting. I have (as have most people in Bakersfield because Bakersfield sucks so we take a lot of trips out) eaten in many different cities across the country. This would be decent anywhere and I could see it as a chain at least in the south(not texas). I have always loved this place. Haven't been in 6 years and today it was just okay. I got it put of my system. It was actually pretty bland sadly. The beans and tri tip just zero flavor. I will always love their chocolate cake though. The pasta was eh taco salad was alright could of used some more flavor. My husband's bread was dry for his sandwich he just ate the meat inside.
